What revision is my 5G iPod? Will Serial Number tell me?

My local Apple store just replaced my 5G ipod (one of the early ones) because it kept re-booting. My question is, how can I tell when the new one was made? What revision is it?
It's serial number starts with 2Z631 and it's model # MA147ll.
btw, Cheers to the Apple Genius for not giving me a big hassle or acting like it must be my fault (though he did say he hadn't heard of this problem before. Are they trained to say that? Do they ever read the forums?) Anyway, kudos to Apple.

Two corrections:
1. The Model # is A1136, not MA147LL, which I guess is
the "Part #."
2. My grammar stinks. There shouldn't be an apostrophe on the "it's."
Thanks.

  • Why can't iTunes track your ipod's serial number when it is synced to iTunes?

I was wondering Why, if your iPod is stolen, iTunes cannot track your ipod's serial number when it is synced to iTunes.. I've had my iPod touch almost a year now and it is registered in my name and everything. This past weekend someone somehow got into my car while at a concert and stole my purse, my ipod, my friend's ipod and wallet.  I didn't think to file a police report because I figuered there would be nothing they can do. Since, a lot of people buy and sell iPods all of the time from one another instead of from a store.  I thought to let it go, but it keeps haunting me, someone has access to a lot of my person information. This hit me when at work, I was using Pandora internet radio, and someone deleted all of my radio stations and added their own. They are still using it till this day and I have no clue what to do, I've changed my password to Pandora even.  I know it's being used via my iPod from my Pandora app, I regreat not downloading the new ios5 on my iPod... So, I really have no further idea of what to do. I contacted Pandora in hopes they could change my account password or delete it or something, I just hope they haven't used any thing else important. I really wish it were possible for iTunes to track an iPods Serial number when the iPod is either synced to iTunes / iTunes store.. If it were possible, I wish they could help me out and at least lock my prior iPod or hopefully delete everything from that.. I don't have much hope in this though :/

Thanks for the suggestions... tried tehm but no luck so I've taken it back. I think I'll try a Samsung (only other ones I've found with a Sleep Function) and move to Audible instead of iTunes. A shame after years of iTunes use but I shouldn't have to spend days getting a product to work. Thanks again.

    No.
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    iCloud: Find My iPhone
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it unless you had iOS 7 on the device. With iOS 7, one has to enter the Apple ID and password to restore the device.

  • Typo when entering ipod mini serial number

When installint itunes on Windows XP, at some point along the process, it asks for the ipod's serial number. I entered a "5" instead of an "S" that was in the serial number.
    Does this matter?
When I registered it online, I used th "S".
Can you change it in itunes, I could not find where.

Won't matter... you can call Apple if it ever becomes an issue when you need service.

  • Lost IPod, have serial number, what to do now?!....

My iPod was recently lost/stolen (not sure), and I retrieved the serial number. What do I do now?

Report the theft to your local police, if you have the serial number make sure that you have it quoted in the report. If your iPod was registered with Apple when you first got it, that will assist the Police in returning it to you should it ever be recovered (Apple have no procedure to track, trace or block your iPod from use): How to report lost or stolen Apple product?

  • 6th gen ipod nano serial number not being recognised by support

I have just tried to register my 6th gen ipod nano on Apple's website and I get a message that says the number is not recognised, recheck and try again.  At first used number from nano box, then tried again after connecting nano to computer (same number appears of course) but still not being recognised.  The fact that the serial number is not being recognised is not helpful when you need help from support as they also require this information before they will contact you.  Why is my nano's serial number not being recognised?  More to the point, how do I get apple to recognise it?

    Are you sure aren't mistaking I's for 1's or O's of 0s?
If you head to Settings - General -> About, does it list the same serial # there?

  • My busted ipod's serial number is scratched out and I need repairs?

I bought this ipod mini off of a guy who bought it off someone else.
The thing is busted and won't even turn on or charge and the case is banged up and the top and bottom covers are missing.
I wanted to get repairs on it and I was willing to pay but I saw that I needed to enter a serial number.
Unfortunately someone scratched the serial number out and I can't read it.
    Am I screwed?

Serial number scratched out? That's a sure sign that it is stolen. Nice. Apple won't repair it - you should try a 3rd party iPod repair service.

  • How do I find my iPod's serial number if it's been stolen?

My iPod video was stolen two weeks ago, and the police told me that, if they somehow recover my iPod, it'll make it much easier for them to return it to me if they have the serial number. Unfortunately, I've had the iPod for several years so I don't have the original packaging or the receipt anymore, nor is the iPod registered in my Support Profile. I know that, if I had it, I could hook it up to my computer and the serial number would show up in iTunes, but I obviously can't do that. However, I have obviously hooked the iPod up to my iTunes before, so I was wondering if there was any way to go back into my iTunes history and retrieve the serial number that way somehow. Any ideas?

I'm doing this in iTunes 11 on Windows.
So, in iTunes, if you don't have the menu bar showing, hit ctrl+b.
Now, make sure you have something to write with handy, as you're going to need to be fast.
When the menu bar pops up, hold down ctrl and click Help and then About iTunes (hold down the ctrl button the entire time).
A small screen will pop up with some scrolling information, a couple seconds in you'll see 'iPod S/N:'
Write down the list of letters and numbers that comes after that, as that is the serial number of the last iPod that was plugged and synced with iTunes.
You can repeat this process several times to be sure you get all the characters.
You do NOT need to have your iPod plugged into iTunes to acces this information, the only necessary thing is that your iPod has been plugged into and synced with iTunes at least once (which you have, so good). For posterity: if it's never been plugged in, and you don't have the box, you might be out of luck.

If you have FCPX (10) you can upgrade for free at the MacApp Store.
Did you click "proxy media" when importing? That will help playback.

  • IPod mini serial number and battery charging

This is a weird question that I hope someone can help me with. I purchased a refurbished mini (silver) on eBay for my daughter, because I love my mini, but I couldn't by a new one. I'm having battery charging issues (it won't hold a charge even after being on the charger (USB to Mac iBook) overnight. I wanted to see if there was still warranty available on it, but when I typed the serial number on the back of the iPod into the "check warranty" box on the Apple support home page it said it wasn't a correct serial number.
The back of the iPod (from top to bottom) has the apple logo, an HP logo (I wonder if it was originally packaged with an HP computer?), a weird holographic sticker of some kind, the size (4 MB), then the serial number. The serial number does look significantly different than the one on my blue mini.
Could it be that apple handed the warranty support on this iPod to HP?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPod mini (blue)

    Kyle,
Thanks for your help. I will check the Hp website for warranty information for her iPod.
I keep my iBook set to never go to sleep when it's on the power adapter (I regularly charge my iPod overnight on it, and always use the power adapter when charging).
I reset her iPod and it seems to have solved the charging problem. It may have been an indicator problem — I saw some posts about that. I am having my daughter listen to her iPod all day today and see how long the battery lasts.
    Your post was very helpful!
