What router do I need?

I recently went from dial up to a cable modem and I would like to hook both my computers up using ethernet. In the future I plan to get a Powerbook, or macbook, and would like that to be wireless. I also might add a PC.
Could someone suggest the best router to use? I don't have airport cards.

Nothing wrong with your questions - it's us.
1. Any wired ethernet router will work. A four port router lets you connect up to 4 computers and have each go on the internet (for example) at the same time.
2. Routers are not Mac or Windows specific - so any brand will do.
3. The better know brands are D-link and Linksys. There are others.

4. In addition to the router, you will need ethernet cables. Each computer is connected to the router with one of these, and the router is connected to the modem with another one. Like routers, these cables are standard stuff.

  • What router for MacBook

I will be visiting Ohio soon where my daughter has broadband, what router do I need to purchase in order to work wirelessly through her broadband? I have checked the Apple store online but its totally confusing as to what I need, any help greatly appreciated.

many routers by many manufacturers can be read and connected to via WiFi with your MacBook. I think there needs to be a host computer for the network you would make. And for all you know, there might be an unsecured, wireless network you can just read off of.

    Hello SalsburgD
The first thing I would check is to make sure that the router is using the recommended settings to get online. Another troubleshooting step is to create a new Network Location and then join your network to see if that changes things.

Leave both computers plugged into the router - that's probably the safest network configuration.

  • What harware do I need?

OK, I own a small business with two (2) 933 Mhz Power PC G4s they are connected to the internet via a Netopia router and ethernet connection. I have on order a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4. The new laptop come with an Airport Extreme Card. Both desktop Macs have slots for the original airport card, but alas, no card. I would like to network all three computers wirelessly, including sharing an internet connection. What hardware would I need to create such an animal?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Will

WillClifton, Welcome to the discussion area!
If your replace your Netopia router with a wireless router, you can connect your PowerBook via wireless and your 2 Power Mac G4s via Ethernet.
If you really want to make your Power Mac G4s wireless, you can use either a Mac compatible wireless PCI card or an Ethernet wireless adapter. The Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers therefore they will work with any Ethernet device regardless of OS.
    So you need:
    1 - wireless router
2 - PCI wireless cards OR
    2 - Ethernet wireless adapters.

  • What information do i need?

What information do i need to use an airport with a dsl Ethernet router?

That is kind of a broad question.
If you already have a router there really isn't any information you need. Just configure the AX so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED and then connect the AX to one of the Ethernet LAN ports on the router.
For a secure wireless network you will want to enable WPA wireless encryption when you configure the AX.

  • What exactly do I need to do to set up wireless?

Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong section. I am totally new to all of this. I have comcast as an internet provider. I want to be able to use wireless internet on my MacBook Pro. What all do I need? I want to know from real people b/c it seemed like in stores, people are just trying to sell me things. My house is close to 3000 square feet for what it is worth. I'm overwhelmed and not sure where to begin. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are the 2 PCs connecting via wireless or Ethernet?
Did Comcast provide a router or just a modem?
If Comcast provided a router and your PCs are connecting via Ethernet, you can still use either the AirPort Express (AX) or AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The 2 PCs will connect via Ethernet to the router as they do now. Or the 2 PCs can connect wirelessly to the AX or AEBS. (Assuming that the 2 PCs have wireless ability).
If Comcast only provided a modem and the PCs are to connect wirelessly, you can still use either the AX or AEBS.
If Comcast only provided a modem and the PCs are to connect via Ethernet, the AX alone won't work for you. In that case you would either need the AEBS or another wireless router with multiple Ethernet ports.

What Router Would Be Best If Using Two PlayStation 3 Consoles That  Are Connected To The Same Broadband Internet Connection? My Two Cousins Aren't Able To Connect To The Same Lobby Party Together As I Am To Play COD MW3. My router easily handles 2-4 PS3s at a time during Uncharted multiplayer and its a few years old.  Its a Linksys Wireless N (model no. WRT150N).  Like I said, its not the newest but it handles all our consoles just fine.  My internet speed is 24mbps, maybe your cousins need a faster connection? Hope this helps.

  • I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought iPad (today). What hardware do I need to set up wireless LAN so iPad can be used anywhere in house? Will Linksys work with Apple?

I have a Mac connected to Internet via DSL modem. Just bought an iPad2 and need to know what hardware do I need to add wireless LAN so I can use iPad anywhere in the house. Will a Linksys router work with Apple? Can Mac be "hardwired" and iPad wireless? Probably stupid questions but I need to learn. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
    Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

  • Which Wlan router do I need?

    Please can anyone help?
I am on a BT line and my service provider is wanadoo through orange. I want to go wireless.
What sort of router do i need?
    Thanks

    Hi
Sorry for this question but why did you post this question in the Toshiba forum???
There are so many WLan routers on the market and I think you should read some test articles about the router hardware. Maybe then you will bring more light into this case.
By the way, I use the WLAN-Router Sinus 154 DSL Basic 3

  • What router can I buy to be compatible with my ATT Uverse service?

What router can I buy to be compatible with my ATT Uverse service?I would like a fairly fast moderately priced one. My current router does not work and I prefer to own the router than rent from them.

You may purchase any router you desire, preferably a dual band, and place behind the Uverse RG in either DMZ mode for pace/2 wire products or IP Pass through for Arris/Motorola products. However you must have a Uverse RG for actual connection due to certificate authorized service.Resulting in the need for the company owned/maintained equipment fee, currently $7 per month, for new installations and repairs of existing accounts requiring the RG replacement.

why am i getting the message cannot get mail or that i am not connected to the internet what settings do i need to be on

WIFi needs to enabled and you need to be connected to a network. Alternatively, you need Cellular Data to be "on". (Settings>General>Network). But it propably is a problem with your router (at least, it often is with me), provided you are using your private router. Try schutting it off and turning it on again. This usually sorts problems like this out.

I certainly would not follow the link in the last post of that thread you posted. I just looked at that article and it is for Cloning the MAC (Media Access Control) address from a computer to the router. That is only part of what you need to do and you do not need to do that. If you are on a Cable connection all you have to do is turn off the modem, unplug it, for 5 to 10 minutes and when you connect the router to it and turn it back on it will sync with the routers built in MAC address.
What you need to do is configure the router manually. That is to set a main router logon password, setup the wireless side to WPA or WPA2 and set another, DIFFERENT, password for the wireless side.
Head over to DSLreports.com and look up the FAQs for your model Linksys router.
    Good Luck.
Oh and while you are doing this make sure you Write all the passwords down so you can get back into it when needed.

Why when my IPAD2 loose connection with the router sometime I need to enter again WPA2 password?

    same problem here.
MBA (latest os), even my ip5 (latest ios) & ipm (also latest ios) looses the connecntion.
Ive tried to figure out what causes the problem - neither my xbox360 nor (and i guessed they will be the problem) the pcs here...
the connecntion runs well.. switching also (MBA-IP5-IPM).. but not for longer than an hour.. or even minutes. When the connection looses a high-frequency noise is followed by silence. A restart fix that problem and all devices streaming well... but not for long...
    any suggestions?
