What routers other than apple routers can i use to extend my existing time capsule network?

i have an existing time capsule wifi network already in place. i need to extend the network wirelessly without the use of an ethernet cable. what i am wondering is therte a cheaper router other than the airport express that will do this?? your prompt responce is greatly appreciated

Have tested many products and many brands, and have yet to find a 3rd party device...including so called "universal" repeaters....that will actually extend an Apple network wirelessly.
You may have better luck than me if you have unlimited time and the store will allow you to return multiple products that do not work.
If you do find one that actually will extend the network, please let us know.

Can I use RAID 1 with a Time Capsule?
And if yes, how do I do so?

Don't think that the firmware on the Time Capsule will support a RAID device at the USB port on the Time Capsule, if that is what you are planning to do.
Even if it might, the connection will be about half the speed of USB on your computer. Better to connect the RAID to your computer and back up that way.
If you plan to back up using Time Machine, check with the RAID manufacturer to see if that might be supported with the device.

  • What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
                                                                                             Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
                                                                                             Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)
I want to run guest network (hopefully simultaneous dual band) and personal network. I want the new express to run both bands just like the Time Capsule, and for the old express I want to know which of the two bands I am extending.
    Thank You!

I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands.  At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal.  With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

  • Can old 11g AX join onto 11n Time Capsule network?

    Hi everyone,
I originally posted this up in April, but got no responses. If someone knows the answer to this question I'd be grateful as my decision to purchase a TC is dependent on it! I'd posted this up on the TC forum as well - sorry for 'doubling-up,' but would really appreciate some advice!
    Glossary:
    TC - Time Capsule
    AEX - Airport Express
    My current set-up:
Billion ADSL2+ modem & 11g wireless router (I got this from my ISP, and will be keeping it because I use its voIP capabilities)
2 x 11g AirPort Expresses which I join onto the current 11g network - I only use these for the AirTunes feature
    2 MacBook Pro's
    1 MacMini
    Scenario:
I figure when I get a 1TB TC I'll plug it into the router & use it to set up a new 11n wireless network. _**Will I still be able to use my old 11g AEX's to join onto the new 11n network so I can continue to use AirTunes? Or will I have to replace all my old 11g AEX's with the new model that support 11n?**_
On top of the additional expenses of having to buy new 11n AEX's, it'll be a pity of have to throw out relatively new and perfectly working 11g AEX's
Before we get even that far, I wonder if anyone has experience with using TC with a Billion modem/router? (I will turn the Wifi function on the Billion off of course). I have come across a couple of discussion threads where people described difficulty getting the TC to work with some routers.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

So just to clarify, if I had this dual-band set-up, my 2 MacBook Pros & to-be-acquired Time Capsule could work off the 11n network, and my 11g AEX's & Mac Mini could work off the 11g network (from my original router)?
    Yes, that is correct.
    And I would actually be setting up 2 network names (1 x 5G & 1 x 2.4G) for the 1 same network?
    Correct again.
Would the network speed be different if I set the TC up as '11n 5G only,' compared with '11n, b/g-supported?' I'd only be using Time Machine on my MacBook Pro (my work computer), so I'd like its network to be as fast as possible.
Yes, operating in the 5 GHz wide-band radio mode, your TC would be capable of obtaining bandwidth speeds up to 300 Mbps. In the 2.5 GHz band, it would be roughly half that. Actual throughput for both of these will be lower as this measure would also take into account distance and any Wi-Fi interference.
And one last question, would the Mac Mini have any problems accessing and writing data onto the TC, since it'll have to access TC through a bridged 11g network? (As opposed directly accessing the TC 11n network).
It shouldn't as all devices connected to either network would be able to "see" each other, and as long as those devices are properly configured to share, gaining access to them shouldn't be a problem either.

  • Can I use the available space on Time Capsule to store media files?

I recently bought Time Capsule and set it up to do backups of my iMac (Snow Leopard).
Since, the Time Capsule has a 1TB HDD, I decided to use the Time capsule to store media files. However, when trying to resolve a Time Capsule issue with the Apple Care technician, he informed me that storing media files on Time Capsule is not recommended. He suggested buying an additional portable disk to store the media files. Wanted to confirm if this is truly the recommendation for Time Capsule.

The Time Capsule was designed for Time Machine backups and that is the recommended use for the device.
If you have plenty of space on the drive, there is probably no harm in using the drive for other data, but as space becomes tight, there is going to be struggle between Time Machine and other files regarding space allocation.
But if you are storing your media files on the Time Capsule disk.....how are you backing up these files?
The advantage in having a separate drive for your media files is that Time Machine will back up both your computer and the separate hard drive. Then you have backups for everything when....not if....a drive fails.

  • Time Capsule not connecting to WEP printer.  Time Capsule set up for WPA2.  Can I use both standards with one Time Capsule?

How do I get a WEP printer to connect wirlessly to the new Time Capsule set for WPA2?  High security is needed do to large Apt Complex.

Actually, you can but it would require that you reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) for "WEP (Transitional Security Network)." This Wireless Security option allows for both WEP and WPA clients to connect ... BUT does NOT support the AES/CCMP encryption protocol introduced by WPA2. Note: The WPA2 standard supports both the TKIP (used in WPA & WEP) and AES/CCMP (used only in WPA2) encryption protocols.
If you require the stronger AES protocol, WEP clients or WPA clients that only support TKIP will not be able to connect.

What can I change to gain access to my work vpn.  I can access with my MacBook Air and other routers.  Can use my ipad and this time capsule to successfully access the VPN.

You need to give us a lot more info.
I presume the MBA and the TC are the combo that doesn't work, although you don't clearly state that.
If the ipad and TC work.. are you sure the ipad is connected via the TC and not 3G network?
If it is then the TC itself is fine and the issue might be setup on the MBA.. although if the MBA works with other routers.. that rather confuses the matter.
You need to actually tell us how the TC is setup in the network. What kind of broadband modem you have and what kind of vpn you are using.

  • Can i use any other branded headphone jack other than Apple jack ?

My doubt is that , will there be any defects caused to any apple product if use any other banded 2.5mm jack other than apple? If so ma i know what can be those defects or mal-functionings..? Pls help me because the apple jack is not serving me to listen to music when i go for jogging, it does not have good grip and hence it falls off my ears. Kindly help me with this issue.

I do not really understand what you are saying, if you could, specify. The standard jack is 3.5 mm by the way, and it should be 3.5 mm on your iPhone. Any device bought from Apple, including third party devices (Meaning from other producers, eg. Sony, Bose, etc) should work fine. You are not limited to using included EarPods. If you mean that you wish to take apart the device and replace the headphone jack built into the iPhone, I strongly recommend you not to, as it will void the warranty, and has an extremely likely chance to damage your iPhone.
Edit Here is some info from another post of mine, to help you understand your new iPhone!

  • HT2954 How can I access my imac mail from a different computer other than Apple?

How can i access my imac email from a differnt computer other than
    apple?

If you are using IMAP mail connection (IMAP keeps the  mail on the server), then you just configure the other computer's mail client to access the same account.
If you are using a POP mail connection, then the mail is generally downloaded to your Mac and deleted from the server.  That is a much more difficult problem to solve.  NOTE:  Google's gmail does have a POP option that does NOT delete the mail on the server, so it is accessible via the gmail web page.
A lot depends on what you are using for your mail service and whether you are using IMAP or POP protocols.

when I open a music file from a source other than apple, does itunes create it's own file and can I then delete the original mp3?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place.  The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file.  You can delete the original if you wish.

There is a huge difference between sending email and sending messages.
Yes, I believe you when you say you can only send messages to other Apple products.  The iPad is not a telephone, and therefore, it cannot text message.  It can only iMessage, which means it can send and receive messages to/from other Apple products if they are on WiFi or an iMessage capable cellular network.
Email, however, is a whole different category.  I don't really think you can only exchange email with other Apple products only.  Make sure you have correctly identified the symptoms.

  • Can an airport express be used to connect to things other than apple products?

I have not yet bought this product, but I was wondering if it will only connect to apple products or other products for example my PS3?

Yes, if you have an AirPort Express 802.11n.  If you are not sure, look on the side of the device for the Model Number. You want to see # A1264.
This also assumes that the AirPort Express is located at a point where it can receive a strong signal from the Time Capsule.

  • Iweb upload to host other than apple

Is this possible? Can I change the settings inside of iweb so that it will upload the site to a different host, other than apple. I'm a dreamweaver user and I have to help out a number of people and they all just got new macbooks. Since it has iweb already, it would be great to use it, but we didn't get the mac accounts. The office did open an independent site with a generic hosting service.
One person says that we can upload the site to the our purchased host through FTP. Sure, but everyone is COMPLETELY computer illiterate. So that isn't a solution. We need something they can just press and it will work. Can I configure iweb to do this. This is a Yes or NO question. I just need to know. I can do the legwork myself, but before I get started down that road, I need to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Otherwise it's dreamweaver.
Thank you. Whoever you are that has the answer.

Whatever happened to helping people to learn or teaching, or has this art suddenly disappeared? I am sure that most people were computer illiterate as you put it before we got our hands on one and were taught or helped to learn how to use it. I know I was. I remember about 16 years ago now, when I was at university, I needed a computer, so I purchased an Amstrad. It was a black and white monitor and had no hard drive, so all work needed to be saved on a floppy disc. This saw me through uni and I then decided to buy my first proper computer which was a Viglen PC. This had an internet connection and I learned how to use this by fiddling myself and reading books and with help from others.
It was not long after this that Apple bought out the first iMacs - the Tangerine iMacs that were 500 Mghz. I bought one of these for my parents as they wanted something simple to use without all the leads and connections that PC's had. I set it up for them and used it myself and was so impressed with it, that I went out and bought one for myself and have never looked back. It ran OS 8, which was quite unstable and kept crashing and freezing all the time. I learned how to use this myself.
Since then, I have graduated to the latest Macs and the latest software, but they are easy to use even for the computer illiterate. Even the computer illiterate can learn if they are taught.
I totally agree with what Roddy has said. How hard can it really be to publish to a folder - this can be done from within iWeb itself, by selecting the Publish to MMe or a folder option? If someone were to set up an ftp client such as Cyberduck for people to use and have all the info needed entered into it, then all they need do is click on upload and select first the site folder and then the index file. Is this really going to be so hard?
Do you really think that using Dreamweaver is going to be easier than using iWeb? If these people are not even able to click on publish to a folder and then upload using Cyberduck themselves, then do you really think that they will be able to use Dreamweaver any better? Dream on then if you think this!!

  • Did anybody else lose Safari history -- other than Apple history -- overnight?

I rely on return visits to many of the websites I access every day.  It's so convenient to merely use the Safari History dropdown menu to back track but today, along with other aggravating weirdness, I can no longer access any websites I visited earlier other than Apple.  The only reason I've been here today to Apple's crazy environment is because of all the stupid things my computer's suddenly doing today. . . like ousting all web history except their own.  What arrogance!
Is anybody else having this problem?
    Thanks.

(people do forget to update their signatures you know )
I have the same issue. I was using my MBP Retina on the w/end and all of a sudden my auto complete was not working (for something as simple as news.com.au). I'd normally type in news and it would display the '.com.au' part.
Likewise for all my commonly used sites. They're simply gone. I've observed this before, but not bothered to investigate. This time, I had a large number of sites and it's just plain frustrating.
I have my history set to manually delete, and there's a heap of HDD space left.
As I mentioned, this is not the first time. I've observed this on 10.8 as well.
