What's a good book on RAW?

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who would like to learn more about camera RAW, both within the camera itself, and within Photoshop/Bridge? I am a bit of a novice photographer, and that's putting it nicely, and i plan on picking up Scott Kelby's book on digital photography so I can learn a bit more about my camera, but i have a strong interest in learning the ins and outs of Camera RAW. Any recommendations? And if you know of any other books that help teach the ins and outs of a digital camera (i have never taken any kind of camera class so i'm starting from scratch basically) then i would appreciate it.
Thanks

I bought Bruce's CS and CS2 editions, and my workflow is still largely based on them.
By September, I will probably have switched from Bridge/ACR (CS3) to Lightroom - I'm just waiting for 1.1 at the moment before taking the migration seriously.
Will te book be any use for me - or can you suggest an alternative? (You don't need to be modest! Should I get the videos you made with MR? Martin's book? .....)

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.

  • Newbie to unix / what are some good books

Hello Unix world, i'm very new to the world of Unix. Just got a sunblade (with solaris 10), and i'm in the process of putting it on a x86 machine also.
What are some good books out there for someone like me? I took linux 101 in college, but thats about it. I''m looking for a book(s)
to take me from the position that i'm currently in (equivalent to my mom on windows), and put in into a position where i will be able to take a few Certifications(solaris 10).

On hands experience is always good, when it comes to books i'ld recommend any O'Reilly book, like their "UNIX in a nutshell", even if i haven't read it myself i suppose its good :-)
I guess i could look around, drop me an email at abrante (at) gmail(dot)com if you want some more ideas about sun specific books.
    Cheers,
    //Magnus

  • What is a good book about Lightroom

Hi ... I am new to Lightroom, and am looking for a good book that covers the program's
operation and use.  I'd appreciate any recommendations y'all might have.  Thanks!
    /kim
PS: Sorry if this is an FAQ, but the search function isn't working, and I did not see any
           recommendations in the FAQ thread.

I think one of the major problems I have with Kelby's books is that he doesn't explain much about what his photos are showing you.  This is a major drawback to his book, as his text ends up being totally misleading because he is assuming things about your setup.
For example, we get people on here who claim Kelby recommends all images in a single directory.
We got that enough that I went and actually read that section of his book, to see what he is really doing.
Turns out he recommends what most of us do here, using a *top-level* directory to hold all of your folders in date orgainzed format.  But, since he is using the default LR date organiztion, it only shows up in his image captures of what he is doing, it doesnt' showup in his text.  Thus people read that to mean all images in a single folder, which causes all sorts of problems as they go forward.
    Because of those types of lazy misunderstandings, I can not and do not recommend his books, even if I thought they were better than Martin's, which I don't. :}
    Cheers!

  • What's a good book which includes Tiger terminal commands?

Such as those settings not available via the regular GUI (one example - how to force Safari to open links in a new tab automatically instead of a new window - I found the answer to this already btw but I'm sure there are lots more things that I don't know about). I'd like something with a bit more depth than most books I see on the shelf, which only seem to cover the basic GUI stuff and a few very very basic unix commands (which are not specific to OS X anyway).
I know I could look things up here, but I like a good book to read too

    Hi Jonathan
If there is an O'Reilly book on the shelf, grab it. They're the best in my opinion.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/ltigerunix/index.html
    provides an excellent start.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/macxtigerunix/index.html
is an ultimate reference, very comprehensive.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mactigerian/index.html
concentrates on the BSD Unix Layer of Mac OS X.
    http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/macxtigermm/index.html
is probably not what you want, but it is very useful to someone who wants to get in-depth information using the GUI.
    Not O'Reilly:
    http://osxbook.com/
all about your beloved Mac OS X kernel. Very technical. By Amit Singh.

  • What is a good book to help learn new iNumbers 3.0.1

Is  there an instruction book out yet for iNumbers 3.0.1????
I need help with iNumbers. Senior citizen who keeps a strick budget in Numbers1 I will be 75 years young on Xmas day. Yeap some Dimension...so Help!
    Thanks
    Dennis

    Dennis,
Congratulations on having this interest in lifelong learning. I know that you know that there's no magic pill or shot that will implant Numbers skills in your brain. And, you probably realize that there's no book or video that will address your exact needs either. The Online Manual for Numbers 3 is even less of a book than the manuals for earlier versions of Numbers. It's a reference guide which reveals syntax and rules for specific details on operating the program. There is no way to read it like a story unless you have near-infinite patience in following links. It's like exploring a maze. It assumes previous spreadsheet familiarity.
    Here's my suggestion...
Think of your learning expedition like any other large project in your life. Describe, write down, what your destination will look like and how you want to be able to interact with it. Then think about all the steps that you think you may have to take to do to accomplish your goal. Be very specific. Write down ever little thing that you can think of that you may have to do in the course of your project. Do this so that you can check these things off as you accomplish them and know what you have left to learn about so you don't have missing parts when you try to put it all together.
With your plan in hand, begin your journey here, one posted a question at a time. Pick one of the small details on your list and formulate a question that will demonstrate mastery of that element. Ask your question in a new thread here. Look at the feedback you get. Play with alternative solutions - you often will get many versions. When you are satisfied, check that skill off your list, pick another point and ask a new question, in a new thread. At some point you will be asking questions that involve combining concepts that you have learned earlier. We have participants here that have dozens of threads to their credit, so don't worry about the frequency. You can try searching for similar questions, but the search engine on this discussion platform is very weak so I wouldn't depend on it.
In a given thread, when you have reviewed the responses (ideas) and have tested the ones that look promising, mark the post that most significantly impacted your understanding of the problem by clicking the "Solved" button associated with that post. You are also allowed to mark up to two other posts with the Helpful button. It would be nice if you could avoid marking any of your own posts with the buttons.
    Good luck,
    Jerry

  • What is a good book to get me started with the basics of podcasting?

Does anyone have a good one? I'd like to add a podcast to a website I'm working on, but I've never made one before.
    Thanks!

I don't know of any book specifically about podcasting - Google may help here - but you may find my page useful:

Something I can buy from Amazon?

Here are the results of a Google search for clipart for Mac:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=clipart&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en -US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&pq=clipart&xhr=t&q=clipartfor+mac&cp=10&pf=p&sclient=psy&client=firefox-a&hs=ZRQ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Ao fficial&source=hp&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=clipartfo&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.&fp=71baaab10161ac2e
You do not get a virus from googling - just make sure it is a reputable site you are purchasing from. Many are free to download.
I don't use clipart myself - having a Mac and numerous editing, painting, and drawing apps, I create my own art. You can also usually purchase this type of thing in a computer store (big box store) - they sell software as well as hardware.

  • What are the best books for PL/SQL and Forms for BEGINNERS?

I asked about learning Oracle Forms in an earlier thread. Some suggested Oracle training at official Oracle Training centers like Koenig. I just went to the Koenig site. The OCA & OCP Forms Developer Training Boot Camp is a whopping 2,610 USD. That’s like 1/4 Million LKR. It’s more that the yearly salary of both the 2 new developers we got and want to train. That’s out of the question.
Some have suggested shadowing experiences programmers and team coding. Both options are out, since those things don't work here.
Learning from sites such as Francois Degrelle's blog is no good for new people since they will get confused.
I have come to the conclusion that the only way to do is to buy 2 books, one for PL/SQL and another for Oracle Forms, give it to them and ask them to follow the book and learn it and also give a time period like 2 or 3 months.
What are the good books out there for BEGINNERS to learn PL/SQL and Forms?

In addition to the books the chapter Application Developer's Guide - Fundamentals in the documentation is also worth giving a shot:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14251/toc.htm
Just for the record: I believe leaving them alone with the books won't do it. I'd at least define objectives (e.g. $chapters of the books in a week) and after they achieved them I'd test their knowledge of the individual objectives (like it was back in school :p ). By that you have control over how they are proceeding, you can focus on the things they didn't understand and you are able to eradicate some bad habits they might adopt during their studies.
If you don't take your time to train them proper you won't get good developers anyway and you will loose much more time and money...
    cheers

  • Regarding Good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g

    Hi All,
What is the good book for Oracle Service Bus 11g in the below list(or You can also specify any book other than from below list)?
1)Oracle Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook
2)Oracle Service bus in 21 days
3)The definitive guide to SOA:Oracle Service Bus,Second edition (or)first edition?
Can yOu help me out which is the good book for OSB?

    Hi Deilby,
    Thank You for your reply.
According to my understanding(I don't know whether it is correct or not),If you want to have full-fledged OSB development,we need to have eclipse.
If you just need to have routing and transformation along with SOA suite development,We can use OSB console .
Can You also look into this below SOA forums thread with SOA-OSB questions? If I have 'Oracle
Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook' , Can I answer all those questions?
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2559964?tstart=0
My intention is clear,I want to have full-fledged OSB development information(important components) and that leads to have good exposure to face questions.
Can You help me out to clarify my understanding and recommend the book according to that?
Note: I already worked on SOA Suite.I worked on OSB console. I think whatever we can  do with OSB eclipse development the samething we can do with OSB console along with SOA suite.
    Can You clarify on this?

  • Good books for hibernate beginners

    hi friends,
what are the good books for hibernate?

    > hi friends,
what are the good books for hibernate?
    I heartily recommend
    [url=http://www.apress.com/book/bookDisplay.html?bID=1
    0151]Beginning Hibernate: From Novice to
Professional, by Dave Minter. Not only is it anexcellent introduction to Hibernate, the author posts
    on this forum frequently.
    ~
I saw his book in my local bookstore this morning. Had a bit of a chuckle, Dave would like to thank Jeff Verdegan for a particularly tricky example in chapter 13, apparently.....
Looks to be a pretty good book, too. Covers subjects such as stored procedures from Hibernate, which Hibernate in Action doesn't touch on at all (unless they're covered in the second edition, which is at least twice the size)
I'd recommend Dave's book, too, from what I've seen of it

  • New To Motion Good Book

Hello, I am pretty new to Motion. What is a good book to read to explain some of the process? What would you all recommend?
Thanks for all of your help.

There are three Motion books on the market, you can see links to them here:
    http://www.applemotion.net
I did write one of them, but they are all good - Mary's is a good intro, Damian's goes deeper, and they are both project-based, meaning they are meant to be worked through with the accompanying DVD of project files and media. Mine is more of a reference guide when you get stuck.
There are also several very good DVDs, check that link as well.

  • What is a good java book

I am new to java. I had a class on it and the book we used in there was cumbersome and unorganized at best. I am wondering what other people have found are good books to help you get better at java. I need something that I can find answers to basic questions and also more advanced ones. If possible I'm looking for one that can also work like a reference book where if I need to know something specific that I can find that pretty quickly too.
Is there such a thing out there? Or am I looking for the impossible? Please help... anyone?

    Core Java Fundamentals - ISBN - 0130471771
Core Java Advanced features - ISBN - 0130927384
These assume you know another object orientated language.
The best refrence is the java documentation available at java.sun.com or it can be downloaded.
