What's a good DE to try?

Hey guys,
I've been using linux for about a year now and a few days ago I decided to use arch. I was suprised when looking at the beginners section of the Arch Linux wiki about the amount of different DE. I've tried KDE and Gnome, but I know nothing about the three other main ones: Xfce, openbox, and fluxbox. So I wanted to ask you guys this question, what kind of DE should I install to really get a feeling of what Arch Linux is all about, or what one would be good as a first experience out of the norm of Gnome and KDE.
Thanks guys!

A DE is just a number of applications that work together to give you a full-fledged desktop experience right out of the box, without much tinkering. A window manager is one part of your desktop, the part that lets you move, rename, minimize, hide windows. Some people don't need much more, but there are lots of apps out there which add some functionality to the basic premise of managing windows: Panels, system trays, docks, system monitors, file managers, etc. Look here to get a brief overview on some of these.
A panel keeps your opened windows neatly organized, think of the Windows task bar.
System trays display system messages that might be of interest - volume control, IM notifications, new mail, new updates...
System monitors display information about your computer's internals, mostly in text or graphical form (temperature, CPU load, memory usage, free disk space...)
File managers do exactly that, they let you manage files and provide neat icons for folders and files.
Of course, these aren't the only things you can use to spice up your desktop.
The obligatory edit: You can, of course, change the default window manager of a DE. E.g. before I came to Arch, I used Gnome with Openbox as a window manager.

  • What are some good, standard, help strategies?

I'm learning JSP, coming from a Cold Fusion background.
The biggest difficulty I've found in learning a new language is learning where to get help. This means:
    1) Which book(s) to buy (there's a bazillion of 'em)
    2) Where can I get help locally? Is there an IDE that is better for JSP? does any IDE provide in-depth help and docs on JSP? or code samples? Is there a detailed langauage reference I can download and use, or import into my IDE of choice (which is Homesite/Cold Fusion Studio)?
    3) Where can I get help online? What are the best web sites to provide answers using tutorials, articles, forums, and/or sample code? I'm sure this site here at Sun has great stuff, but is it 'real-world' information?
I realize there are a ton of books and sites to help. The problem may be that, because there are so many, newbies have a hard time knowing which ones are the best for us. We don't have the time, money, or resources to evaualuate all the books and websites that are avaialable. I think I need a short list of the most popular and common sites and books.
Also, For the above information, I need resources that can provide both newbie information ('cause I'm new to the language), intermediate information for people who have coding experience and catch on quickly, and advanced info for the nitty gritty occasions that inevitably pop up while coding.
I have learned some of the best help strategies for Cold Fusion, but any time I start learning a different language, I struggle to develop a new and efficient help strategy. What are some good suggestions?

Try professional JSP from Wrox Publication - a good book, but you will have to sit and read it, patiently - there is no shortcut to anything.

What's a good online resource for learning OA framework?

    Hi,
Best way to start OA framework is Toolbox tutorials..
This tutorial is available with jdev itself and you can find it in jdevdoc folder.
There are 7 exercises available in the tutorials to learn basics of OA framework.
Also try other 5 supplemental lessons for advanced OAF programming.
And refer OAF dev guide for more details.

What is a good design application for drawing logos on my MacBook Air?  I'm looking for something that isn't too expensive and is fairly easy to use.  I would prefer vector technology.

  • What is a good interface to get LE's max # of tracks?

I have heard goo things from folks using the FirePod, but what is a good interface for LE to get the max tracks it is capable of?

    Hey tele-player! LTNS!
Well, I am still leaning towards the FirePod, but since I have no immediate plans to buy anything, maybe something new will come out by the time I get to a position that I can actually make a purchase.
My day gig is being outsourced to India, and at my age, i really don't want to go out and look for another job. So I plan to do whatever else I can from home to try to make a living. Plus I am gonna get to play out again And I thought maybe I might offer my services to some of the young bands locally to help them record demos. So, this is a "down the road" situation for now. For that, I'll need to get Tiger as well as the FirePod, and a handful more mics than I have for starters.

  • Norton ends in 5 days. What is a good FREE, safe anti-virus and security download?

Since downloading Firefox, I cant see ID safe of the toolbar. It does not seem compatible with 9.0.1. but as Norton expires in 5 days anyway, I would like to try a free anti-virus/security download.
Any ideas what would be a good one to try with Firefox?
    Thanks

No, Avira doesn't include a Firewall. My advice is to use the Windows Firewall which comes with WinXP, which should automatically be reactivated when you un-install Norton.

  • What is a good gate to use for vocals? Help!

    Hi Guys
I'm still relatively new to Logic... I'd love some advice from those more experienced...
What is the best way to eliminate background noise from the spaces between words on a vocal part? I experimented with some of the gate options, but I ended up just making the vocal part really quiet (and even then if I turned up my headphone amp, I could still hear the hisses and foot shuffles of the singer, in between the sung words)...
Does anyone have some advice on (a) which gate in Logic I should use, and (b) some good settings to try to get a cleaned-up vocal take that has silence in between the words, without sounding too quiet or too un-natural?
If anyone can point me to some useful info on this or make suggestions, I'd be very grateful!
    Cheers and thank you,
    Mike

I'm probably in a minority, but I don't like using gates on vocals. I'd much rather take the time and manually clean up vocal tracks in the sample editor, taking out noises, pops, background noises, reducing breath sounds, changing gain etc. Although it takes much longer of course, I prefer the results which sound much better and more natural to me. With a bit of practice, you can zip through tracks quite quickly.

Try a PRAM reset: power down the MBP, power back up holding the following keys before the chime.  Option, command, P, R (commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the chime 2 times.  You can also try a SMC reset:  Power down, power back up holding the following keys.  Left shift, control, option, continue to hold these keys till the gear stops spinning.  Hope this helps.  Best

    Hello brainiac08
Typically that error occurs because of a backup issue. Check out the article below to resolve it.

what are the good ways to send a big file( 20MB-100MB) file to my friend?
    Thanks in advance

if this is with the internet, iChat is probly your best bet,
but if you just want a transfer,
plug a firewire into both of your computers, shutdown one of them, hold "T" and press the power button, the restarted computer should pop up as an external drive on the second computer.

  • What's a good external keyboard for MBP

Given that the MBP keyboard is so inadequate and Apple is seemingly too stubborn to give us a good one, an external keyboard is mandatory. However, I'm not sure what's good in the Apple world. There is, of course, the Apple keyboards and I'm going to take a look, but there are also some from Logitech and others. Does anyone have any suggestions on good ones? I purchased the iHome IH-K236LS, but just looking at it and feeling it and seeing that it requires a power cord is not making me feel like it's a good purchase. Plus the mouse feels incredibly cheap. Like something from a kids toy. And it requires two of the three USB ports (but does add two on the keyboard). Anyway, I'm thinking I'd better check into other possibilities, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

People have such different views of what makes a "good" keyboard, GTGeek, that it is almost impossible to make suggestions without getting a better idea of what your requirements are.
I grew up using manual typrewiters (Olivetti Lettera 32's etc), migrated to IBM and Brother electrics, and then nearly 30 years of different computer and data terminal keyboards.
In the early years, perhaps not surprisingly, the closer a computer got to approximating that of an IBM golfball the happier I was. Few computer keyboards seemed to have the "feel" or travel that I was used to. Despite this i gradually found I adapted to almost all of them.
I still have many of my older computers and I often get a bit of a shock when I use them these days! My favourite in days gone by on a portable was on the NEC8021a, but today when I use it the keys seem too sculpted and to have too much travel (both features I once really liked about it!)
The keyboards on modern MBPs , of course, are at the opposite extreme - flat keys and little travel. The same goes for Apple's own current external keyboards. I now use them all the time, but if you don't like the keyboard on a current MBP I doubt you will want to yourself. The feel is very similar.
The older white Apple Bluetooth keyboards had more travel , and more sculpting and a nice feeling of "solidity", but can only be found second hand these days.
I personally like the Apple Pro wired keyboards in days gone by, but, as with the white bluetooth they are now history.
I have two Logitech wireless and and a Microsoft USB keyboard tucked away in the draw (together with just about every keyboard Apple have ever made) . The Logitech and MS ones feel very "plasticky" compared to Apple offerings, but, as I said, I have simply adapted to the latter over time. You might find them fine if that is what you are used to.
On Mac notebooks my favourites in the past were those on the PB1400, the PB 12 and the earlier models of the MBP, but I've adapted to the current MBP ones now as well.
All of which adds up to the fact that the only way to decide something like this is to test them yourself, and, perhaps, to be prepared for a period of adjustment whatever you get before you can really judge it. Familiarity breeds contempt, they say, but in the case of keyboards it has always seemed quite the opposite to me. What you have been using most in recent times always seems to be the best after a while!
    Cheers
    Rod

  • What's a good book for getting started?

I've been doing web design in HTML and ColdFusion for almost 3 years. It's clear that ColdFusion is on it's way out and I need to learn J2EE/Java/JSP etc. I have a few questions:
Java is a term I've heard associated with C++ and other types of programming as well as Web design. Are the Java/C++ Java and the Web Java basically the same type of language? Is the Web Java and JavaScript the same thing? I'm very confused!
What is a good book for getting these types of questions answered and getting started in J2EE/Java/JSP? There are quite a few variations of script languages out there and I want to make sure I learn the right stuff, ie the stuff that employers are going to be needing.
    Thanks!

Here is a free online version of a good book:
    http://pdf.coreservlets.com/Core-Servlets-and-JSP.pdf
Print it off or read from the screen. Otherwise, there are several good Java books out there. What I would do is go to the bookstore and thumb through a few books. Depending on what type of book you want (example based or theory) find the books that you think would satisfy your learning style. Write down the names and authors, go home and buy them used online at Amazon for tremendous discounts. This way you can buy several versus just one.
