What's  a good jpeg downloader?

What's a good jpg downloader?

With many Jpegs online, you do not need to right click all of the time to get the image downloaded to your Mac.
One other way to download Jpeg images is to click on an image and drag it off onto the Mac desktop or an open folder where you save your Jpegs.
If you save larger Jpeg images,
Another way is to activate tab browsing in Safari in Safari's Prefernces each time you click on a Jpeg it will open in its own tabbed window. Once you have a bunch of Jpegs in each tabbed window, you can simply click and drag each Jpeg off of each tabbed window to either the Mac desktop or whatever folder that you have open to save your Jpeg images into.

What is a good download speed. Mine is 4.17mb/s is this good or bad?

It's average. Do you have cable or DSL? I'm moving into an apartment that has cable speeds of up to 20 megabits per second. Cable speeds do vary and, at the low end, run around 5 megabits per second.
So - cable or DSL. If cable, call your local ISP and see if they have a package with higher Internet speeds.

  • What is a good spyware program to download

What is a good spyware program to download?

I strongly disagree with Shootist007.  Google "OSX Flashback" to see the damage a recent Trojan was able to do by infecting thousands of MAC's - many of whom shared the view of Shootist I suspect. OSX is susceptible to viruses just like Windows machines- however, just on a much smaller scale.
Apple itself even recently removed the famous tag line " Mac's don't get viruses " from it's advertising because it is simply no longer true.
Personally, I've used Norton Internet security for MAC - and found it to be very good. I currently use AVAST free antivirus however on my Macbook PRO and it also seems sufficent. You can obtain this by going to www.download.com  and you'll note its among the most downloaded MAC software on the site.
Also - if you have not done so -  make sure your firewall is turned on by going to the security settings. I'd also suggest going to safari preferences and unchecking the box marked "JAVA", not to be confused with JAVA SCRIPT which is ok. This is how the "Flashback trojan"  I mentioned earlier exploited OSX.
    Best of luck !

  • What are some good applications to download on my new iMac?

I spend time in video and picture editing. I also am a college student and spend a great time researching, staying organized and in social media (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram). What are some good free apps or essential apps I should download. Also Im looking to spend $9.99 on a good paid app also. Any suggestions would be great!

Good place to look for software:
    http://www.macupdate.com/
And for free alternatives to some popular software packages:
    http://alternativeto.net/
(If you see an ad there for something called MacKeeper, ignore it and on no account install it - it is malware.)

  • What is a good free substitute for Adobe Flash Player? Apple will not download this but I need it for several things I want to do?

What is a good "free" substitute for Adobe Flash Player? I need this for photos to be developed.

You cannot substitute another app for Flash because it is proprietary technology. Apple is adamant about keeping Flash out of their phones and tablets, hence why you will not find it in the App Store. If you want to be able to use Flash on-the-go, consider purchasing an Android device.
Doesn't matter at this point.  Android 4.0.3 is the last OS he'll have if he wants flash.  Adobe has already stopped development for their mobile flash player.

  • What's a good file recovery program for a MacBook Pro running IS 10.7.5?

Hey gang - I ordered a miniStack 4TB external hard drive from OWC a few months ago during a long overseas trip. I finally unwrapped it and started dumping data to the drive from the 1TB drives (also from OWC) I used via my MacBook Pro. I connected the 4TB to the laptop with FW800.
I came back from the gym (gone about two hours) and saw a "the drive wasn't disconnected properly..." window. There was a clicking noise coming from the drive, which means mechanical failure.
I went into Disk Utility and the drive is there but it's grayed out. I changed cables to USB 3.0. Unplugged the drive. Shut down the laptop. Then went through the start up and nadda.
So before I run off a disk repair place in town and spend $1000, what's a good hard drive recovery program to use to pull the data? I only dumped 1.5TBs until the 4TB and have other drives to dump that data too if I need to.
    Thanks.
    Cheers,
    Bill.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service, such as Data Recovery by DriveSavers, which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • What is a good defragmenting software for the mac, and what is the price ranges if there are mutiple ones?

I have had my mac for about a 1 year 5 months, coming onto 6 months. And I want to keep it running in top shape, or as close as it can get. I Am just wondering what is are good softwares for defragmenting a Macbook and what are the price ranges, and what are the recommendations. Which would you rate from best to worst in other words.

First Mac OS X doesn't need defragged. If your harddrive is ~80% full heavy downloading could hurt disk performance but I'd say you're in the clear. If Apple considered defragging a necessity they would have included it into Disk Utility.

what is a good storage size when purchasing an iPad?

Keep in mind >  How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity
Actual capacity on a 16GB iPad is approximately 13.82GB.
Video files can take up space fast not including other data such as Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Music, Notes, Apps, and Bookmarks so you may want to keep that in mind before you select the 16GB.
Your Mac must be running at the minimum v10.5.8 in order to sync, restore, and backup an iPad.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions About Mac Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.
Four outstanding sources of information on Mac maintenance are:
    1. OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
    2. Mac maintenance Quick Assist
    3. Maintaining Mac OS X
    4. Mac Maintenance Guide
    Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
    Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. Malware Protection
As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion, Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary. To assure proper protection, update your system software when Apple releases new OS X updates for your computer.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection:
    1. Mac Malware Guide.
    2. Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware
    3. Macintosh Virus Guide
For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
    Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
    Installing System Updates or Upgrades
Repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Update your backups in case an update goes bad.
    Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. You can never have too many backups. Don't rely on just one. Make several using different backup utilities. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
         1. Carbon Copy Cloner
         2. Get Backup
         3. Deja Vu
         4. SuperDuper!
         5. Synk Pro
         6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
    Final Suggestions
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.

I would use physical backups using this information (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3107) and keep a thrid copy that you keep at a friend's house and rotate through.  2 TB downloads are slow enough for smple files, and I do not like relying on ethernet for my perosnal files anyway.

  • What player/flash do I download to listen to BBC radio

What player/flash do I download to listen to BBC radio

Plug-ins let your browser handle special kinds of content such as streaming video and audio. MIME types are a geeky shorthand for various types of content -- and I agree that it's frustrating when your computer refers to acronyms and other technical jargon so casually!
The good news is I was able to get the BBC Radio iPlayer to work fine, so it's not a Mac-compatibility issue. You just need the proper plug-ins. You'll want both the free Flip4Mac (Windows Media) plug-in and the free Real Player plug-in.

  • What do I need to download a .exe?

I am new to the wonderful world of macs. What do I need to download and run an executable file?

    Hi artizmart,
Good news, you'll need absolutely nothing for this. That's because .exe files will not run on OS X. An option to consider would be to install VCP7 if you need to run Windows apps on your Mac.

  • What are some good, standard, help strategies?

I'm learning JSP, coming from a Cold Fusion background.
The biggest difficulty I've found in learning a new language is learning where to get help. This means:
    1) Which book(s) to buy (there's a bazillion of 'em)
    2) Where can I get help locally? Is there an IDE that is better for JSP? does any IDE provide in-depth help and docs on JSP? or code samples? Is there a detailed langauage reference I can download and use, or import into my IDE of choice (which is Homesite/Cold Fusion Studio)?
    3) Where can I get help online? What are the best web sites to provide answers using tutorials, articles, forums, and/or sample code? I'm sure this site here at Sun has great stuff, but is it 'real-world' information?
I realize there are a ton of books and sites to help. The problem may be that, because there are so many, newbies have a hard time knowing which ones are the best for us. We don't have the time, money, or resources to evaualuate all the books and websites that are avaialable. I think I need a short list of the most popular and common sites and books.
Also, For the above information, I need resources that can provide both newbie information ('cause I'm new to the language), intermediate information for people who have coding experience and catch on quickly, and advanced info for the nitty gritty occasions that inevitably pop up while coding.
I have learned some of the best help strategies for Cold Fusion, but any time I start learning a different language, I struggle to develop a new and efficient help strategy. What are some good suggestions?

Try professional JSP from Wrox Publication - a good book, but you will have to sit and read it, patiently - there is no shortcut to anything.
