What's a good level to record voiceover?

Hi,
I'm completely new to audio production, and need to record a voiceover. I've got my mic hooked up, and am getting a level of some sort. What I'm wondering is, what's a good level? I mean, I understand that the closer to 0 dB I can get, the better the quality of the sound. But, in practical terms, as one's voice fluctuates, what "general" level should I shoot for? How much level is too little?
It seems that subtle movements of my head in relation to the microphone, or a little extra "energy", and I get clipped. Can anyone offer any suggestions/advice?
Thanks,
Vic

Hi Vixter101,
To add a limiter to the selected track click on the 'i' button on bottom right of GB.
The Info Pane opens. Here you can add/Edit the effects on the Real Instrument Track. You should find the 'AUPeakLimiter' is what you are looking for.
If you need extra help post here again. There are some useful videos by Apple.

I personally recommend the macprovideo guys for video tutorials. The Garageband 08 and 09 tutorials are comprehensive and easy to follow.

• What's a good interface to record voice/guitar tracks in Logic Pro

Hello - could you tell me what would be a good interface to record voice/guitar into a Logic Pro project please? Thanks.

re the firmware update - there is talk that this should only be done if you are going to use USB - and also that it needs to be done via Windows.........I am confused re this?
I don't know about that, I don't own a Phonic, but if you only have to do it for USB, well, then there's no problem and you don't have to do anything, so...
Also when you say DAW (what does that stand for?
Digital Audio Workstation; Logic, Cubase, Protools etc are all DAWs. You'll probably encounter this term once in a while...
I just want to make sure and sorry if i sound silly but I should be able to use Phonic as my interface with Logic Pro without using Cubase?
Yes.

• What is a good rate to Record at if you are doing something for someone big

96? or 44.1 is fine....NOTE: im not doing like vocals really just the beat
Message was edited by: KennaOkoye

no, your totally wrong. working in 44.1 is a bad idea unless your doing a demo or something. i'd like to know why your qualified to give out advice like "the difference in 48 and 44 is negligible?"
Hmm - questioning someone's qualifications while demonstrating a lack of understanding in the same sentence is a bit offhand, I think...
you should record the highest bits and sample rate you can. the end.
You are incorrect, sir.
Audio recorded at higher sample rate and bit maintains better fidelity. . . so when you reduce the quality your doing so from a better recording.
This is a over simplification and is a bit naive.
There are rules of thumb, but blindly saying "use the best you can" is impractical. What you should do is "use the most appropriate settings for your project", and this will vary.
Most audio productions that are destined for CD should be done at 44.1KHz, to avoid the need for sample rate converting, which are generally to be avoided (even if the best algorithms are pretty good these days).
(Does it make a different in a mp3 world.? A topic for another day I think... )
Most audio production for video, DVD and picture are done at 48KHz, because that's the standard sample rate for these projects. If you have the horsepower, like the sound, and have specific reasons, then going up to 96KHz is an option for some people, although as it halves your available resources it's a big hit unless you have a big system.
But blindly saying "use the highest" is bad advice. You need to have the understanding and experience to judge the requirements of a project, and choose the most appropriate settings for it.

• What's a good program to record college lectures?

This may not be the right board for this, but I feel like the people here can help me the most.
I want to record the lectures in my college instead of typing. I've tried doing it with garageband, but after 3 hours the file becomes REALLY large. I need something that can make it a mp3 as it records.

Try audacity (free) or even a portable recorder.

• What is the proper way to record line numbers in Master/Detail records?

Guys and Gals,
Been thinking about this for awhile, but thought it best to ask the people who really know what they are doing.
What is the proper way to record & show line numbers in a Master / Detail record set?
For example, take Master/Detail relationship Orders and OrderItems. Orders has a column Document_Number and OrderItems has Document_Number, Line_Number. Line_Number should contain the row number 1,2,3,4 ... etc. for each row in a document.
Should I ...

Add a sequence and a trigger in the database? The FusionOrderDemo does this, but then the sequence never "resets" and I've got row numbers that keep incrementing. So one document has rows 4,5,6 and the next document has 7,8,9 when they should both have 1,2,3.

Programmatically take care of the row numbers? This seems like I'm asking for trouble. Anytime an insert or delete operation gets done, I'll have to iterate through rows and re-assign row numbers.

Is there a way to assign row numbers in a table iterator (or data collection?) to an entity?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's looking like #2 is my only option, but if anyone knows different I'd love the input.
Will

Thank you both guys.
As John said, I believe I'm looking for a gap-free sequence per master record.
The line number of the OrderItems table is the second half of the primary key. The first half of the primary key (DocumentNumber) is the foreign key to the Orders table.
Think of it like line items on an order or invoice. For example, if you were talking to someone on the phone concerning an invoice, you might say, "The pricing for line item #3 is incorrect." In this case, it's good to have a common reference. Or imagine a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with no row numbers displayed! You'd never get anywhere if you had to explain something over the phone.
If this is tricky to perform, I take it using a sequence and trigger such as the Fusion Order Demo is the best way to approach the challenge for simplicity's sake?

• What's the best way to record high SPL band rehearsals?

I need a simple way to record higher SPL band rehearsals. I don't need studio quality or multi tracking. Just an audio recording that clear and as un distorted as possible. I know the built in mics on Idevises are not really made for higher volume stuff. My band has changed some of the structures of cover songs we are doing so practicing to the original artists studio recording does more harm then good. I just want to be able to record us rehearsing so I can practice to it at home. And get the changes and structure down before we play out live later this month.
I have quite a few idevices but the more modern choices at my disposal are: iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPad (3rd gen) ipod (4th gen)
What device, app and hardware will healed best results. I've been told the mic on the earbuds have a better frequency response then the built in mic. So is it better to use that? And what app is good simple and effective at auto controlling the mic's sensitivity to reduce distortion.
Also I am the drummer and acoustically seated, in About the worst position for quality. So rather then have the idevice behind my kit where I can control it. I would need something I could place across the room and just record an hour or two.
Thanks.
Chad

Seems like you've answered your own question as those are the two ways to do what you are trying to do. Using the key-switch will be less CPU intensive than using multiple instances of the plugin.

• What is a good codec to convert MTS too for edting?

I heard that MTS or AVCHD footage is not good to edit with. What is a good codec to convert too?

No.
"Rendering" in working through PrPro is actually just telling the program to take the instruction set for an area selected and create new previews for that section. They are NOT really to be used in any final export process (there are only about two format/codecs that would work that way, and likely no one reading this is using them ... ) but JUST for playability in "real time" in the monitors during editing.
It is needed if between the computer specs & drive layout, the number of effects called for in a clip, and the particular codecs used, the playback causes the GPU to "drop frames" or get slow/erratic in motion. You simply select that section of the sequence, then right-click or go to the upper menu system or keyboard-short to "render selection". You computer runs for a bit, then ... playing back that section should be full-speed.
Someone who say uses mts files (which can at times be a bit of work behind the scenes for the hardware) and never needs to render before he's done with a project and exports it is saying that his computer handles mts file just fine with the level of effects he uses without needing to render any sections or suffer 'dropped frames' on playback.

• What's a good speaker to use in an iOS Garageband Jam session ?

What's a good speaker to use in an iOS Garageband Jam session ?
Really I want to connect a few iOs devices together to create a loud sound...
Any thoughts....

Snapping with the iPhone is great when you out and want to catch something, but the care needed to capture a sheet of music requires focus, lack of keystoning (that's the big one - you're really going to have that lens absolutely perpendicular to the centre point of the sheet, and ignore any distortion towards the edges?).
Sorry - if you want to reproduce music at a decent level, it has to be a scanner.

• Low levels when recording?

Using a 1212m, recording from 1/4" line-in or from Host wave (ASIO 1/2), when the Patchmix Strip & Main Mix levels appear to be set just right, the recording software (SoundForge 9c or Cubase LE) shows peaks of only about 5dB. Is this normal? If I record at this level can I just Normalize afterward without distortion? It seems that clipping levels anywhere in the path would not be good, but I'd like to record the best quality signal possible. Any suggestions are appreciated.
By the way, are there any Plug-ins that allow Auto Levels in recording software?

>> May not be the same with Sigmatel audio, but with Realtek in XP, you have to have both the master volume and the wave volume up in the playback mixer. Have you tried adjusting the Wave level control? <<
Yes. For output volume, only the wave volume affects levels in Audition so I set it to maximum. The master volume changes loudness of the speakers but does not affect Audition's record levels per Audition's level meters.
For record volume, the "Line-in" slider affects audition level meters. I adjusted this to maximum.
With both output (wave) and record (line-in) sliders set to maximum, Audition's record level meters still show a maximum of about -30 db. When playing the recording back using Audition, the hardware speaker's volume knob has to be turned WAY up to hear the song.

• Record Voiceover is not enabled

I'd like to record a voiceover in iMovie 10 but the option is not enabled even after first clicking in the Movie. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks,

Hi Ben,
Thanks for replying. The movie I was trying to add a voiceover to had been updated from the previous version of iMovie. I was trying to access the "Record Voiceover" menu entry when the old media was selected in the "iMovie Library" library folder. I've just realised there's an "Updated Projects" folder too, and when I select the updated version of the project in there, the menu entry is enabled. So thanks for making me re-look at the Project side of things.
Cheers,

• Record voiceover problem - blank clips laid down

Hello all, bit of a curious problem. I am using the FCP X record voiceover facility but after making a recording, the track laid down is mute / blank. It has no waveform at all, as if nothing has been laid down. This has happened with every attempt ,so I have reinstalled FCP X and tried again. Same each time since. The recording process appears to be working normally but nothing is in the track clip that has been laid down.
I have also used the Quicktime Player audio recording facility to test my computer. It all worked fine and I imported the quicktime audio to the storyline on FCP and played it back no problem. So what could be causing the issue here ?
I have also tried another USB mic system that was working fine on another computer with FCP. That didn't work on my laptop either, same problem, goes through the motions, appears to make a recording and then you discover nothing is in the clip. I also tested my Shure kit on the other computer , it all worked fine, as you would expect.
I am using FCP X and a Coles Lip mic , a Shure X2U USB pre amp and a Shure mic to line amp to drive the mic before the Shure unit as on it's own it is quite hissy.
Appears that the Shure X2U is driverless post 10.4.
Any help would be gratefully received ,
Cheers

Thanks, have been through this. None of the mics attached to FCP end up recording a vo. I have changed the system settings each time to show my Shure preamp, my Blue Snow Ball USB mic and have even tried to use my internal mic on the laptop to record a VO.All of them have been correctly selected for VO, they appear to make a recording but when you play back the new clip , there is nothing contained in it . There is no waveform and no audio , just a blank empty green space ! I can make a quicktime recording on the same laptop using any of my mics etc and import it to the timeline , no issue. I have also used my all my mics on another FCP set up and they have worked first time. The issue is with my FCP on my laptop. I have even reinstalled FCP and still the same.

What are your goals here for chatting-style communications?
iChat server provides a way to leave messages for offline users, server federation, connection encryption, public key authentication, connections across networks, and various other features and options.
Here is the [iChat Server Administration 10.5|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/iChatService_Adminv10.5.pdf] manual; check the first couple of pages for some high-level details on the features. • What is a good interface to get LE's max # of tracks?

I have heard goo things from folks using the FirePod, but what is a good interface for LE to get the max tracks it is capable of?

Hey tele-player! LTNS!
Well, I am still leaning towards the FirePod, but since I have no immediate plans to buy anything, maybe something new will come out by the time I get to a position that I can actually make a purchase.
My day gig is being outsourced to India, and at my age, i really don't want to go out and look for another job. So I plan to do whatever else I can from home to try to make a living. Plus I am gonna get to play out again And I thought maybe I might offer my services to some of the young bands locally to help them record demos. So, this is a "down the road" situation for now. For that, I'll need to get Tiger as well as the FirePod, and a handful more mics than I have for starters.

• Level to record vocals at?

Hey guys, so I'm running a cheap dynamic microphone into an M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I'm recording my singer currently, and I wanna use the compressor in gb, bare with me, I'm not very experienced with how to use it with vocals. Basically, I don't want the signal to clip but for garageband to pick up his signal I've had to turn his track volume up all the way as well as bringing the compressor's gain level up pretty high, thus clipping the signal. In addition, when I have the gain and volume level at good level where it's not clipping the signal, I can't hear him in the monitors/he can't hear himself singing in his headphones. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Sorry if this was super unorganized and all, I did my best to describe the situation haha

The important thing about GB's built-in compressor is that, like all effects, it is applied non-destructively after recording the track. So while a compressor that you use in your signal chain before the computer can help you boost the silent passages of the recording while avoiding clipping, GB's compressor doesn't change the original signal at al. So you might just record dry without any effects and set the level so that it is in the red but doesn't clip, and apply the compressor and/or other effects later - as I said, it's all non-destructive, so you can change the effects any time.
If your singer's signal varies so much, it might be a result of bad microphone technique - in a song with a high dynamic range, you just can't sing all the passages at the same distance from the microphone, you'll have to get closer for the soft passages and back away for the screaming parts. If the singer applies this "human compression" technique, he/she makes it a lot easier to mix the vocals later without having to kill it with compression.
