What's all this then?

Recently, I decided to empty the Trash and found 501 folders which contained files such as:-
annex_aux annex.db filetoken.db FondResourceCache fonts.db Local.fcache qdfams.db System.fcache and User.fcache
I'm new to computing and don't know what they are or where they came from. Is it safe to delete them? Or open them? Or is it safer to just keep them where they are and just ignore them?
Bill

Thank you for your reply. I'm still on a learning curve with computers so if I see something that doesn't make obvious sense to me, (like where did they come from and what did they do before they got to the trash), I like to find out from others before I try anything just in case I turn something simple into something really messy!

Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

"Other" includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.
Unfortunately the best solution to fix your issue is a restore. Back up your phone, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • My Time Capsule is giving me a warning that  double NAT situation is occurring and recommends that I set it to bridge mode What is all this about please can it be explained in layman's terms and not martian thank you.

My Time Capsule is giving me a warning that  double NAT situation is occurring and recommends that I set it to bridge mode What is all this about please can it be explained in layman's terms and not martian thank you.

You have two devices....the Netgear and Time Capsule both configured to act as routers on the network. You only want one device providing this service.
I suggest that you configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode as suggested to eliminate the Double NAT error. Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be enabled in this setting.
No other adjustments are needed and everything else will operate normally...and the Time Capsule will still be providing your wireless network signal.
Once the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode, it would be an excellent idea to perform a complete power cycle on the network to allow things to reset properly.
Just power off all devices on the network in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start the Netgear device first, and let it run a minute by itself
Start the Time Capsule next the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until everything is powered backup
The other option you have is to "ignore" the error and the light will turn green. The Double NAT error may...or may not cause some issues for you down the line. The next time that you update the Mac operating system, or update the firmware in the Time Capsule, it may likely change the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode automatically.
If your Guest Network "disappears", you will know why this happened, and you will have to manually configure the Time Capsule again in Router Mode to provide DHCP and NAT services.
Double NAT can also cause a slow down of web page loading. You may...or may not....notice this.

  • What is all this about 'weeks'.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but how do you know what week a MBP is? All I see on the web site is "now shipping". What week are we on now? What is the best week? Can you order a spacific week MBP?
    Thanks for the update

    Peter,
It's going great, I'm taking the SATs tommorrow! Hopefully I'll see good results..
I guess I'll give Apple a call and see if they have any 13's. Hopefully I'll see a MacBook Pro on my desk in the next few days (after tommorrow most likely). I'm going for the "Ultimate" configuration, I don't feel like waiting 2-3 weeks.
EDIT: Well, the store doesn't know how to tell what week it is even after I explained what all the letters and numbers mean. sigh After I told them that they should check again, they simply said that they can't give this information away. BS.
EDIT #2: Great, now I called Custome Relations and got this lady who wasn't even paying attention to me. As I was asking my question, she was typing something and then asked "I'm sorry, what was that?". Later she said that there's is no way she could help me, and no one I could ask about this. Go Apple! Way to take care of a buyer! Not!

If I'm not mistaken, all the IO stuff is related to USB and FireWire devices, right? I had my iPod plugged in when I got he Kernal panic as well as running Disk Warrior on an external FW HDD.

"Question only for the Super Elite"
That is presumptuous on your part. Questions posted on a forum should be directed to ALL.
And your thread title is really bad. You should put some hint as to what your question is in the title.
Now that that is out of the way, I would suggest disconnecting all external devices except for your mouse and keyboard, running for a while and then reconnecting external devices one at a time in an attempt to isolate the offending device. I'm inclined to suspect external HDD.

  • What's all this about aperture slowness?

I recently tried aperture on a new imac with stock card and it seemed to work perfectly. (The thread i started on this was largely ignored.)
As a result I decided to get Aperture for my 2x g5 1.8 with 1.25 gigs of memory. It has the FX 5200 unsupported card, so I ordered the 9800.
In the mean time I found a cut and paste hack so I could install aperture on the computer with the old card. To my surprise it seems to work fine.
So what are the things that are supposed to be slow and demand an expensive card? What makes most people insist an X800 is the only thing to consider? (Which I cannot even afford.)
I am using canon raw from a digital SLR and they are all on a second hard drive. I really cannot see anything that is slow. Should I cancel the order for the new graphics card?????
    cheers
    waddo
    http://www.waddo.net/

Ah yes: I did the test, making several changes and the loop did become jerky.
Still, even with this unsupported card, the adjustments work well if I use the tiny arrows rather than dragging the sliders. The sliders work, but they lag behind by about half a second, which isn't so bad considering the video card.
I have cancelled the new card, but I think I will order it again. I have 3 questions if any one can help:
    1. with the radeon 9800 pro 256mb, what performance problems will persist and how bad?
    2. I can get the same card with 128mb of memory for very cheap. The tests I have seen show that the speed is the same but these tests are only for games! At the moment with my 64mb card Aperture puts 4 raw pics into the memory cache. I am guessing that extra memory will only increase this number. Does the extra memory do anything else?
    3. Are there any speed tests of different video cards on the net that use Aperture and not games???
    Cheers

  • Services/apps running, status symbols - what is all this?

I have my first (very basic Motorola Citrus) smartphone, with only the 150MB/month data plan.  I'd like to turn off unnecessary stuff, but I have no idea what half the status bar symbols mean, or what all the apps running are.   Only some of the symbols appear in the (very thin) user manual or online help, and as far what shows up in "Running Services" - none of that is explained anywhere.  I have no idea if it's safe to turn any of this off - if that will speed things up, stop a data hog, or have some big negative result.  Again, NO INFO available anywhere about this that I could find.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance...

Here is a link to the user manual.  It is a bit thinner than other manuals I have looked.
The status bar symbols are on page 10 (pg 12 of the pdf)
You might want to turn off sync to limit background data transfer. page 43 (45 of the pdf)

  • What Does All This Resolution Mean/All-In-Ones?

I use a Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB SDRAM.  All-in-ones are priced reasonably this holiday season.  My old printer is ancient.  I am confused by all the technical specs, etc.
    1. One all-in-one has a maximum print resolution of 5760 X 1440 dpi.  What does that mean?
It has the following for the scanner: Optical Resolution: 4800 dpi; maximum resolution: 9600 X 9600 dpi interpolated. What does that mean?
It also has a scanner Bit Dept 48-bit color, 24-bit output.  What does that mean?
    2. Second all-in-one has a maximum print resolution of 5760 X1440 pixels.  What does that mean?
It has a scanner resolution of 1200 X 2400 pixels with 48-bit color.  What does that mean?
    3. Third all-in-one has a maximum print resolution of 5760 X 1440 optimized dpi.  Meaning?
Scanner has optical resolution of 2400 dpi and hardware resolution 2400 X 2400 dpi (max).  Meaning?
Scanner has maximum resolution of 9600 X 9600 dpi interpolated.  Meaning?
Scanner bit depth: 48-bit color/ 24-bit output.  Meaning?
    Happy Holidays!

    1. Don't believe it, it's hype. Interploated means we can make it seem like more than it is, mostly. 4800 is the real one.
    2. Those are how many dots per inch it can do Horizontally & Vertically.
    3. Not certain, but likely it's Max resolution.
2400 dots per inch is what it really does, but using motly magical "something for nothing" we can make every dot.pixel be 4 dots/pixels
24 bit output is it's max color scan, which is 8bits each for Red, Blue, & green, though it looks for 16 bits of each to decide how to cut it down.
Always look at the lowest numbers... & make sure it has 10.5.8 drivers.

  • What about all this spam on iphone!

Help! I have a great filter system on my mac and all spam hits the bulk mail folder for deletion, however, on my iphone I spend most of my time deleting spam messages manually. I have been to apple store with no success - they say there is no way to keep the spam out. I think that there must be a way! Suggestions please!!

    RonAnnArbor:
You prove my point beyond even my expectations.
I said the additional SPAM was not a result of the iPhone.
I also do not think that it is even part of AT&T.
What I said is that is is interesting that my email SPAM has reached a magnitude higher than I ever experienced since registering my phone approximately 35 days ago.
You merely fortified what I said by telling me that your SPAM has doubled/tripled in the last 30 days. Makes me wonder where all of this SPAM is coming from since I registered my iPhone. Hackers!!! - Hmmm!!! Somebody selling a list of new iPhone users. Not a coincident at all. Think about when you registered your iPhone and when you started getting double the SPAM.
As I said I have been using AT&T for cell phone service for over 12 years and never experienced as much SPAM as since I registered my iPhone.

  • What is all this "Other" stuuf and how do I get rid of it? PLease help!!!

I had to restore my iTouch and it;s working fine now but my computer shows that it has like seven gigs of "other" content that dos not show up on my iTouch. This much space being taken up is preventing me from actually putting my music on my iTouch. Can anybody help me out?

Do you have any apps such as Air Video, VLC or ZumoCast that allow you to convert or sync media for use offline? Or any PDF readers that may have large PDF files associated? Any RSS readers or other aggregators that could have large caches of internet material?
In my experience these are the sorts of apps that generate a lot of 'other' content. Sometimes it's easy to forget what files you have associated with these apps.

Why do I get so mush space taken up with this mysterious Other on iTunes.
Despite restoring as a new phone I still have .4Gb of space swallowed up
any ideas how you get rid of it?

.4 gig of other is iOS and normal. Operating system has
to be stored somewhere. If Other starts to exceed 1 gig,
then restore to get it back down.
