What's best? 7200-rpm internal or external?

Hi,
I have a basic question about the hard drive in the MacBook. I'm thinking of adding one to my Mac Pro, but (as I use it for audio, using Logic), I really could do with a 7200-rpm drive. I've seen that some people say replacing the 5400-rpm drive with a 7200 increases the heat (as it spins at a faster rate) and may also use more battery power. I really want to carry around as little as possible, so was looking to an internal drive rather than extrnal. Does anyone have any advice on what would be best? Has anyone replaced the internal drive (and, if so, did you notice any performance differences or better/worse results?).
Thanks.

Both of those articles say FW is faster - because it is.
Yes, the rated speed of USB2 is 480mbps and FW is "only" 400mbps, but there is a difference in the ways that they are measured. USB is usually peak speeds and FW is average transfer rate. Also, USB uses more system resources than FW since it uses your CPU as the controller whereas FW has its own controller built into the device.
It is up to you, but I too would recommend a FW drive for your purposes. Actually, I would recommend a drive has both USB and FW so you have the option to use whichever interface is available to you.
Look for drives with the Oxford 911 chipset as that has proven to be the most reliable chipset out there.

  • Best practises regarding Internal and External access to SIM

Currently we have two separate Active Directories one internal and one in the DMZ and plan to have one SIM on an segmented network allowing access for our internal users directly to SIM UI and external users thru portlets that talks to SIM.
The external AD hosts some internal users that also needs access to the DMZ applications so we can save efforts in managing to separate SIM environments in development, tests, upgrades, unique UID etc...
What are the best practices on the market is this a preferred choice with only one SIM or with one SIM internally and one SIM in DMZ hosting suppliers, customers etc?
With a single SIM environment are you allowing internal users accessing SIM from Internet to change internal AD password or have you restricted the functionality in some way for internal users accessing SIM from internet?
How about challenge response questions are you allowing users to have the same both internally and externally or setup different for different user interfaces?
Anyone willing to share how your environment is setup for internal and external access?

Yes for handling the access to the SIM we probably need to look into some kind of access management solution to get it to work in a secure way.
The question is a bit complex with many different factors controlling the outcome of the SIM implementation, but I hope to get some idées with this thread of how we can solve it.
The question still remains if its common to have one or to SIM's and what internal users is allowed to do in SIM from Internet.
Ex are internal users allowed to change their password in internal Active Directory thru SIM from Internet or what have others done to limit the functionality?

  • What is the 7200 RPM versus 5400 RPM performance increase on MBP?

I am in the process of ordering a 2.0 Ghz MBP with 2 GB of RAM and Aperture 1.1. I am using this system for Canon EOS 5D RAW files (13MB-15MB).
Would you suggest the 7200 100 GB hard drive or the 5400 120 GB hard drive? My few months of experience with RAM files has shown me that every extra gig of hard drive space is good, but if the 7200 drive will make a significant performance difference I would go that way.
Thank you very much for any help with this
MBP 2.0? Titanium 1Ghz Powerbook last "last PB I would ever need to buy"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G4 iBook 12"

I have the 2.16GHz MBP and I got the 120GB drive so that I could get all the HD space possible.
I cannot say what the difference in speed is between the 5400 and 7200 RPM is but I can say that the 5400 is fine.
I just got v1.1 installed this morning and am playing with it now ... it's not super fast, that's for sure, but for field use on a laptop I think it will be just fine. ...and now with only 20.1GB remaining available on my HD I'm REAL glad I didn't go for the 100GB.

  • Problems with "non-Apple" Hitachi 100GB/7200 RPM internal drives?

I bought a Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 drive from a third-party vendor and had it installed in my 15" PBG4, which promptly began kernel-panicking when coming out of sleep. Pulled the Travelstar and reinstalled the original 60GB drive, and the kernel panics have stopped (up to this point, anyway). Has anyone else had (or heard of) any problems with the 7K100 drives and the 15" PowerBooks, or have I just run into an odd quirk?

The Hitachi drive should work in your machine. I know at least one person who has a 100GB 7K100 working happily––even after dropping his PB on a marble floor recently....
Something particular to your machine or to the drive's installation caused the kernel panics, I'd say.

I am trying to figure out how to use the bank reconciliation process. I keep seeing reference to an "expert sesion" and a link to it.  However I get an Access Denied message when I try the link.

"External reconciliation is used for bank reconciliation , however when you go in detail , you have to use internal reconciliation for Business partner and Vendor .

    Regards
    vijay

    hi vijay,
Internal: Doc number will be providing by the system automatically in serial order allotting the next available progressive number (must to be in number).
External: Doc number will be given manually by the end user. system will not lock number automatically in this case. User can pick the number randomly. Number may be an alpha
    numeric.
ple let me know if u need more information.

  • Exchange 2010 and 2013 coexistence Internal and external URL

    Hi all,
been reading alot of threads about Outlook anywhere and virtual directories in co-existence exchange 2010 and 2013.
Still i dont get any smarter.
    Here is scenario:
    Exchange 2010
    Cas1
    Cas2
    Mailbox1
    Mailbox2
Casarray is Exchange.casarray, com ( internal dns pointed to CAS1 in exchange 2010).Seems like by default both exchange 2013 cas servers are added to the casarray.
    Exchange 2013
    CAS+Mailbox
    Cas+Mailbox
    DNS
mail.exchange.com pointing to VIP (kemp loadbalancer)
Autodiscover ( pointed to same vip ,kemp load balancer)
Outlook anywhere on all servers (2010 and 2013)
Internal ( pointing to VIP on Kemp)
External ( pointing to external IP,then it passes firewall that again passes to kemp)
Problem we are having is when migrating users from Exchange 2010 - 2013.
    Users using Outlook 2010
restart of outlook and mail  works fine.
    OWA works fine
Active sync fails ( need to inherit permission of users AD object),wait couple of hours then mobile can sync again.)
    Users using Outlook 2013
Outlook in disconnected status, only fix is to create new profile.
    OWA works fine
Active sync fails ( need to inherit permission of users AD object),wait couple of hours then mobile can sync again.)
Question is,what should be set for internal and external url (active sync, owa, ews)on 2010 and 2013 servers?
    Where is the config wrong?
    Thanks!

did the test as mentioned, even tried both CAS 2013 servers.Flush and registerdns didnt help.
Still Outlook is Connected to the cas.exchange.as (which again Points to 1 of Exchange 2010 servers),
Tried repair Outlook profile,no og.Only fix is to setup New account.
    Any more tips?

  • 7200 RPM HD for G4 PB Ti ??00

    Hi,
Are there 7200 RPM internal HD's available for my Titanium PowerBook G4 (400 MHz)?
If so, can anyone recommend a good source?
    Thanks,
    Wm

Hi, Wm. Yes, there are 7200 RPM drives that are compatible with your computer. They range up to a maximum capacity of 100GB, and they are now hard to find. I suspect this is because a) drive manufacturers perceive much greater demand for high-capacity notebook drives than for 7200-RPM notebook drives, at least among buyers of drives using the PATA/ATA-6/ATA-7/ATA-IDE interfaces (all variants and variant designations of the same basic interface type); and b) apparently it's harder to build a high-capacity 7200-RPM drive with any of those interfaces than it is to build one with the SATA interface that nearly all current laptop models use. 7200-RPM SATA drives are readily available in much larger capacities than 100GB
A 100GB drive is now considered small, so no computer manufacturer today is going to build a 100GB drive into a new computer. Nor is any manufacturer going to build the older, slower PATA/ATA-6/ATA-7/ATA-IDE interface into any new computer. That double-whammy makes it unrewarding for drive manufacturers to continue the production of 7200-RPM PATA drives of the kind you seek for your Powerbook. Nearly all currently-manufactured PATA drives, from the smallest (40GB) to the largest (250GB) units, spin at 5400 RPM, and they are all substantially faster, quieter and cooler-running than the old 4200-RPM drive that was original equipment in your Tibook. Buy one soon, because in the relatively near future you can reasonably expect all PATA drives to become much scarcer. SATA is already dominant, and will become more so as most of the notebook computers in current use reach end-of-life over the next two or three years.

  • Hard drive suggestions (internal vs external)

Hi all, im happyily almost 2 years into my life of using a Mac, and with my bonus in march im thinking of upgrading my 17" imac to a new 20" 2.4ghz.
I currently host my itunes library off a Lacie 320gb external hard drive, but was wondering if with the new mac (and bigger internal hdd) if i would be just as well off hosting the library on the internal drive.
currently my itunes is about 80GB (music and videos - thanks to my apple tv). - is it possible to host the music on the internal drive, and the videos on the external as they are only their to stay in sync with appletv
im just wondering if hosting such a large amount would hinder the performance of the rest of the mac.
I will be getting discount from my place of work, so was thinking of the money im saving using it at Crucial to get the full 4GB of RAM.
so just wondered of what peoples thoughts are of internal vs external.
1 gripe of mine is that i sometimes get fed up having to turn the external drive on (and sometimes forget to eject it before turning it off)
    cheers

Yes. One cool thing to do is create a bootable backup on an external drive, and use it for OS/upgrade testing - think Leopard. To me this is one huge advantage over Windows systems. You can back up the hard drive and prove it works. Also allows for faster recovery of not only data, but installed applications and settings. I always create a fresh backup to my external FW drive before going on trips.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • External drive 'speeds'???  5400 - 7200 rpm?

I'm on location.  I have to buy a couple of external drives quick.  I'm used to buying my drives straight from a distributor, shipped by mail - he just ships the 7200 rpms.  I go into Best Buy, Office Depot, Target ... and non of the external drives have the drive speed listed on the boxes anymore, nor on the net either, it appears.
Is this because all the new drives are automatically 7200 rpm?
Is there a way I can find out what the speed of this drive I bought is actually running at 7200 rpm before I start loading it with data?: a Seagate Backup Plus 2T.
Any help would be most appreciated,
    Thank you...
    Ben

    Hi Bengt,
I shoot HD all the time.  Often XDCam, which has no problem with the USB2 -- I've made a dozen films in this format over the last year or so, and have had no issues.  I haven't had any trouble with full HD ProRes either.  At least up to HQ 422.  444 would be another issue entirely I agree.  Sometimes I just have to bite the bullet ... on location, everything happening, no waiting for the camera guy, etc. etc. and go for whatever I can get.  The new drive, whatever its rpm, seems to be handling the XDCam just fine.
Thank you, and all the best,
    B

  • I want to buy a 13" Mac, but I have already a 7200 rpm HD, what can I do??

First of all, I want to ask some apologize for my english, but I'm italian, so... Now, this is the matter: I'd like to buy a Macbook, or a Macbook pro, the 13" version of both, but I read in the specification page that I can order a 7200 rpm HD only with a Macbook pro 15", not with a 13" notebook. Moreover, I already own a Seagate Momentus 7200.4, a wonderful HD, and I really hate the idea of returning to use a 5400 one. Can I buy a macbook 13" or a macbook pro 13", and change the HD by myself? What do I have to do in this case? I mean, how can I preserve the data on the original HD (id est the SO and all the programs installed by default)? Will my OS license be valid yet??

Hi ivanhoe1024 and welcome to Apple Discussions!
The manuals for the latest [MacBook Pros|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacBook_Pro_13inchMid2009.pdf] and [MacBooks|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacBook_13inch_Late2009UG.pdf] both give instructions for replacing the hard drive, so assuming your drive is the correct size to fit it should work fine. I would recommend replacing the drive right after you make sure that the new computer works properly, that way you don't have to worry about transferring any data, just reinstall the system and applications directly from the install DVDs.
The license for your operating system would still be valid. I should point out, however, that if your computer requires service Apple will likely ask you to put the original hard drive back in, as they would not be responsible for hardware that is not originally part of it.
    Best of luck.

  • Portable external raid - should I get 5400 or 7200 rpm?

    Hi,
I'm in need of a portable external raid 1 for live data protection. I do illustration work in photoshop and I use bridge to access and view files and reference. I would like to write all my files and read all my files from an external raid 1 and I am wondering if I should get a 5400 or 7200 rpm setup.
My concern is read and write speeds.
My portable setup is a mbp 2.16 intel core duo. I'm thinking of getting the g raid mini 2.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the response.
To clarify my question though -
    1. I'm wondering if either will be fast enough to work off of - I'm planning on keeping the internal drive clean and all data would reside on the raid(so no incremental backups will be needed).
    2. will the difference between 5400 and 7200 be worth the difference in price - ie. lag time or a noticeable speed difference.
    Thanks

  • Firewire 800, 7200 rpm external drive options?

I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro (8,2). I'm looking for a speedy external harddrive to do video editing with. My internal drive is a 256GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD...not a lot of space to store video. So I'd like a fast external.
Problem is, the few Firewire 800, 7200 rpm external drives I've found on Amazon all have TERRIBLE reviews when used with Macs. For some reason, none of these things from Buffalo or Western Digital seem to work with Macs, according to Amazon reviews.
Can anyone recommend a 1 TB external with Firewire 800 and 7200rpm that would be good for video editing, that also works on a Mac 8,2 Early 2011 running the latest OS X?
    Thanks!

I have a 1 TB Lacie d2 Quadra but it's a desktop external disk. It's a great disk with FireWire 800, eSATA and USB 2.0 and 3.0. If you are going to use the MacBook Pro at home, I recommend this drive

I am planning to remove the internal DVD-ROM and use the MCE OptiBay to install a second SSD in RAID 0 configuration, what is the best option today for an external DV-ROM, ideally self powered via USB or Firewire ?, thanks

can't say I agree with the RAID 0, if that messes up or one drive dies, you lose it all. Not to mention, The SSDs made like that aren't made for RAIDs...
The ones that can are really expensive, high end stuff.
