What's best: placing images in Photoshop or InDesign?

Hi guys
Since I hear different things about creating for example posters etc. is this my question: What do you think is best to do when designing a poster or flyer (or whatever) with a nice background, bursh effects, pictures and text?
I do it like this right now:
Create the background in Photoshop
place the background.psd in InDesign
add the adjusted images of the artists etc. in InDesign
add text in InDesign
Save as PDF
Some say creating the whole poster or design in Photoshop (even cutting out the pictures of the artists and rasterizing them) is better than placing each of them separately in InDesign?
Anyone who has a good website or explanation for me to answer my question? Tips and tricks are welcome!
Thanks!

If the background is the same behind all images then you better do it in Photoshop because the file size of the background itself  when flatten will be similar with or without all images added on top of it. Other reasons that you may choose to do it as separate images is if you want the different images with different resolutions, for example if the background is some blurry clouds or some abstract gradients you don't really need to be very high resolution and if the images on top have some fine details you may decide to have them with higher resolution. The other consideration is if you want more flexibility with the composition in inDesign in case of eventual changes. So, it all depends on different things. The text you should do in inDesign.

  • Resizing and placing images CS6 Photoshop

    Hi -
I am having trouble, just recently, placing and resizing image layers. The option to "place" an image from the file menu is no longer available and instead there are two - "Place Embedded" and "Place Linked". However, the images are not resizable after you size them initially. After that you can only access the sizing through the drop down menu at the top of the screen. Before I had the ability to select the layer and the corner points to resize use to come up. Have there been changes at all to CS6?
Also, I had my file window close down when trying to select new image files to place and has never done that before.
Running a new 15" MacBook Pro.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

From what I saw of the video it was not showing the whole story the broken link part of the story was missing. How it works and what can be done if you can not resolve the broken link.
Where some have a use for Place linked I prefer to have embedded objects. For I want collages that may use the same original images to be independent from each other. Fortunately while the old interface menu File>Place no longer exists. Old scriptlistener code for  menu File>Place still places in images in Photoshop CC 14.2 and they seem to be embedded smart objects for opening the smart object with a double click winds up opening files copied by Photoshop in the user ID local temp space. So my old collage populating scripts still work. So I do not need to add code toe test if the users is using Photoshop CC 14.2 or newer and have two place versions  menu File>Place and menu File Place Embedded....

  • The images in Photoshop or InDesign improperly anti-aliased, looking fuzzy

I've bought Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro with Mac OS Mavericks, and am having trouble with anti-aliasing.
In short, the images/documents open in Photoshop or InDesign are improperly anti-aliased and look fuzzy.
I can understand why the menu bars and stuff should appear fuzzy and blurry as a result of auto anti-aliasing; otherwise they might appear too small for eyes to see since the resolution is super high.
But why should the machine want to blow up the images or documents inside the application and apply anti-aliasing to make them look so fuzzy?
It would be grateful if there's a way to stop my computer doing the anti-aliasing all the stuff on screen.

No, not that I know of - you do need to make certain that you're using the very latest versions of both apps, though.

  • What is best Mac Pro for photoshop for the money?

I need to purchase a mac pro to use for digital retouching and photography. Which machine will i get the best performance for my money, I am on a budget.

There are always good buys from Apple Specials, from $2100 and up, just be careful or totally avoid any of the 8-core / dual processor models.

  • Moving images from Photoshop to Indesign (CS4)

    Hi,
I've designed a badge in Photoshop and want to add the graphic to my indesign project. But when I import the graphic it gets a white background by default when I want it to be transparent. I know there is a way but I've forgot!
    Thanks
    James

What file format have you saved it as?
PSD or TIF can have transparent backgrounds.
When you save as TIF make sure you check the box for Preserve Transparency.
If you have a white background in your image already, but have drawn a clipping path, then when you import the TIF file check the Show Options
You'll see this when you go to File>Place (show options is in the bottom left hand corner of the dialog box).
You should have the option to invoke the photoshop clipping path there.
If you have already placed your image with a photoshop clipping path then you can use the Object>Clipping Path>Options and select the path from the drop down menu.

  • Placing Image - 'Sort by' problems

I am having an issue with my image placement in all adobe programs.
When I go to 'place' an image within photoshop or indesign, my file directory appears and is sorted by last modified. I need it sorted by name (which is usually the default). I can change the 'sort by' option, but the next time I got to place an image, it reverts back to the last modified sort. I am placing hundreds of images in this document and it would be must easier if my images were sorted by name everytime I went to place an image.
All my programs outside of Adobe sort by name by default, and my Adobe programs use to. I can not figure out what is causing this problem, and my coworkers computer seems to be working just fine! Please let me know if you have any suggestions!
    Thanks!

If you're using CS2 you're in luck.  Look at the lower left of the File - Open dialog.  Do you see a button entitled [ Use Adobe Dialog ] or [ Use OS Dialog]?  If so, try clicking it.  I'm betting the other form of the dialog will remember the file sort that you like.
There are RUMORS that one can cause the saved sort order in an XP OS dialog to change by changing it manually (clicking on the filename heading), then holding down the Ctrl key and canceling the dialog, but I personally have not seen this work.  It may be one of those old wive's tales.

  • What settings are best to export sharpened images from Photoshop to use in Final Cut?

I need to give a professional photographer the correct dimensions to export her images from Photoshop for me to use in Final Cut. I told her:
1080 x 1920, 300 dpi, and also to Convert Images to Apple RGB (Final Cut doesnt work well with Adobe RGB, I am told). Her images have alot of heavy sharpening on them--she is an artist--and when i import them into Final Cut, many of the lines that should be crisp are zig-zagged, and if I apply motion to them, they "shake."
My problem is specific to images that have been highly sharpened in Photoshop; i have imported lots of professional images before with no problem. I am on deadline and hope someone out there will see this.

You were right about trashing the finalcut plist. As well as a very specific set of directions I now have put together from what you and others have said elsewhere, and this is it, i hope it helps others with their Canon XHA1 and Final Cut Express HD:
Trash the final cut preferences (plist) in your Home - LIbrary.
go into the Canon XHA1 menu, make sure that you're not set to down-convert to DV.
Get out of the menu. Shut the camera off,
plug in the firewire cable to both the camera and computer,
and turn the camera back to VCR mode.
Open up Final Cut, and go to Easy Setup ,
choose HDV- Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
This worked beautifully but took me nearly four hours to figure out, including researching the web and experimenting in FCE HD

  • Placing Images (Screen Caps) for Callouts - Best Practice?

    Illustrator CS6, Windows 7
I'm placing screen captures (screen images from software) in my artwork files to add callouts and create illustrations for a user manual.
The machine I'm capturing on has a screen resolution set at 1920 x 1080 (required for software). I'm using Snagit and capturing the screens, saving files, then placing in Illustrator. I've been using images minimum 300 dpi and never upsizing in Illustrator. Still I think my results could be better.
In the past I've used .jpg as my export filetype for placing into Illustrator. But, recent reads of postings in this community lead me to believe my practice might be flawed.
Question: What is considered best practice for placing images from screen capture (or any source) in Illustrator? What file type from capture will get me the clearest and most adaptable results?
My Illustrator file color mode is CMYK and my other art and callouts supporting the screen cap are working great.
I'm creating the artwork for import to Framemaker and creating a PDF for online and print.

What I mean is; what is the user looking at, and what are you training on?
For example, if the application involves medical imaging, and part of your documentation covers something like evaluating medical images in the application, that would probably be a far more color-critical scenario than an application in which the user just views and manipulates data.
Generally, you don't need anything like 300 PPI for screen captures in software documentation. The whole intent is for the image to look like the screen you are documenting, which is something like 72 or 96 PPI at actual size. You might downscale a screen capture as much as 50%, but at that size, the reader is viewing the application's text (including menus,  etc.) at half the size as viewed in the application, which is assumed to be sized for comfortable reading. Sharpness is good. You don't want the images to become blurred in pursuit of completely needless "resolution."
Also generally speaking, software screenshots are not usually color-critical. Placing (even pasting from SnagIt) directly into the page layout app is usually just fine. PostScript knows how to separate RGB images. Such things have been done since long before anyone sweated blood over "color management." Assuming your application interface is not using garish color (which would be poor interface design; it's tiring), I dare say the conversion of RGB screenshots to CMYK at the imagesetter or press would be fine.
How is the manual going to be printed? Unless you're talking about a large press runs, nowadays software documentation (subject to frequent updates) is often printed on on-demand presses (think glorified digital color copiers), not sheetfed presses. With software documentation, you're not usually talking coffee-table collector's books. (The exception would be something like a book on color-correction in Photoshop; thus my first question.)
I routinely paste screenshots from SnagIt directly into InDesign pages to document software applications, and add the callouts in InDesign. Only when I need some special graphics (swooping arrows, etc.) do I assemble the callouts to the screenshots in Illustrator; and even when I do that, I also typically paste the SnagIt captures directly in to AI.
Keeping your callouts native to the page layout program also better facilitates language translation, when you have to outsource that.

  • Why doesn't a RAW image placed in a Photoshop Document  pick up changes?

I have just noticed that if you place a RAW image in a PSD(CS6), then tweak the RAW image using Camera RAW, the changes are not picked up by the PSD.
I always try and keep my PSDs as open to change as possible and placing is a big part of this. Usually I place an image in a PSD, then if I edit the image outside the PSD, the changes are picked up in the PSD.
With RAW this doesn't seem to happen. I have the following file-structure:
         -- someFolder
            -- somePSD
            -- someRAWFile
            -- someRAWFIleXMP
    What I'm doing:
    1. I drag the RAW File into the PSD.
    2. I open the RAW File and tweak it.
    3. Photoshop does not reflect the changes
    4. I drag the RAWFile into the PSD
    5. I then have the same placed RAW File with the changes reflected as well as the old placed RAWFile without them.
So even though both placed images are the same image, they reflect the RAW File at the time it was placed, not at its current state which is surely the whole point of placing a file. It seems that the image is encoded with the RAW settings at the time it is imported, but these are never updated.
What am I missing? Is this a bug or is there no point placing a RAW file?

If you need a "non-destructive" alternative, you can import the raw as a Smart Object. You can set this in Camera Raw's Workflow Options, or you can do this 'on the fly' by holding down Shift when you click on Open.
If you want to change a develop setting after adding the image to a PSD, double-click on the layer thumbnail to reopen the ACR session, and the OK or Cancel when you're finished.
    Thanks Yammer,
this is very good to know.

  • Placing Linked vs. Embedded Images in Photoshop

    Hi,
What is the difference between placing images that are linked vs embedded in Photoshop? Is it the same as in Illustrator?
They act the opposite of what I would think. Embedded ones act like Smart Objects, where if you double click on them they take you to the original (which I would think would be linked), whereas Linked ones are flattened and don't do anything if you double click on them (what I would think would be the case if they were embedded).
If I'm using linked images in a file that I want to have printed, will I have to provide the links to the printer like a packaged file in InDesign?
    Thanks

I'll start you off with this excellent video tutorial Place embedded and place linked in Photoshop CC on Vimeo
As far as Printers go, I always thought they preferred flat files, but I think it's always wise to consult them as to their requirements.

  • Photoshop CS6 Mac: Placed images are not moveable

Anyone else have this bug? Placed images cannot be moved or transformed, at least initially. I am finding that after a period of time passes (half minute or more), the image is sometimes 'released' and is then transformable. But it can take a couple of minutes. Very bizarre.

What OS version and what are your Performance Preferences?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Problem with photoshop automatically resizing placed images

    Hi,
I have PS6. I have images that are 144x100 px. When I use file>place ps resizes the image to 108x75. I can't figure out how to make ps quit resizing my pictures. Anybody know?
    Thanks

When Pasting, Dragging, copying and placing an image Photoshop will copy all of the image being duplicated original pixels to preserve the image pixel quality the image quality.  If the receiving document has a different DPI resolution the image may look a different size in the  receiving documents because of the number of pixels added to the document that has a lower or higher dpi resolution.  If the image is being placed in if the image pixels exceeds the receiving documents canvas size. Photoshop may scale the smart object layer to fit within the canvas that depends on the users Photoshop's preference.  All of the images original pixels are still there in the embedded object.   In my Photoshop Collage Scripts  I always transform all placed images to 100% size  incase Photoshop scaled the placed image.  For you can not get the scale percent Photoshop used.  Once I know I have the image at 100% size I can use the layer bounds to get the actual number of pixels there are in the placed image.  Once I know that I can calculate the scale I need to use to resize the image to fit the area being populated in the collage template.   Once resized I center it into place and mask off any excess image pixels.
