What's best to learn first - Illustrator, Photoshop or Indesign?

I have a marketing degree but I want a bit of a career change in to graphics. I know, ideally, I need to learn all three to produce good artwork. I was planning on going for Illustrator , then Photoshop and then Indesign. I just wondered what everyone though would be the best route? Thanks

You're on the right track.  If you learn Illustrator first, especially mastering line manipulations and drawing using the various tools, then you can transfer those skills over to Photoshop.  The key is getting a comprehensive education and plenty of hands-on lab work.  Are you looking at a specialized digital arts course somewhere?  Live instructor-to-student collaboration is ideal, see if you can find something like that.  Also, other student feedback and contributions can help in brainstorming.

  • Frequent crashes in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign CS6

Installed CS6 Design Standard on Windows 7 64 bit PCs. We get frequent crashes in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Specifically for InDesign it says it was due to an unhandled exception (exception code c0000005) and APPFRAMEWORK.rpln. The PCs are Dell Optiplex 7010 with 16 gigs of ram. Is this a common problem in Win 7 and CS6? What can be done to fix this?

It's not a "common problem" and your info suggests that this is not at all related to Adobe at all. It's some driver crashing. Find the exact system info and crash details:

  • Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign are continually crashing

I am having real issues when using Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Linking files continually crashes the software, can anyone help please it's driving me nuts!

    NG TDP,
It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • How can I just buy illustrator, photoshop, and indesign?

How can I just buy illustrator, photoshop, and indesign?

Be aware CS6 Applications ARE NOT the most recent applications.
CS6 applications are older and are missing features found in the RENTAL software (CC). Paying for CS6 applications, means you are NOT paying for current features available in the RENTAL applications.
I urge you to compare feature sets and not assume that CS6 applications contain CC features.

  • What s best to learn after PI

    Hello Experts,
I understand its not the best question to ask in a tech forum,
but i was keen to know what will be the best modle to learn in SAP after PI.
I have basic Java knowledge, good PI experience...
so shold I go to portals?? BI??? or learn some ERP module...
    kindly advice,...
    Regards,
    Teja

    Hi Teja,
-->Along with your current skills i feel its better to know about the PI installation and administration ( as suggested by Raja ) and along with that minimum knowledge of ABAP is also an added advantage.
---> CRM is also good to learn. I dont know the specific reason ) but i heard PI with CRM will be good.
    All the best

  • What is best to learn with mm.

    Hi
I am sap mm certified consultant. If i get opportunity to learn pp or wm. What should i choose ?   What will increase my market value in the long run?
I have worked as production planner in past.
    Thanks
    Kiran

First go for WM which is desirable iand a natural progression to a MM consultant. WM will take less time to learn as compared to PP. Over the course of time keep learning PP. PP & MM is highly saleable skill. Aim for both with first prioritising WM and then PP. In future be open to QM also. MM/WM with PP/QM will complete the whole set. You cant carry your next 10 years SAP consultancy with MM/WM only. You are expected to bring more value on table with time.

  • What are the ideal specs for professional graphic designer using CS5 illustrator, photoshop and indesign?g

What are the ideal Mac Pro specs for a professional graphic designer using CS5 Premium- using mostly InDesign, Illustrator and PhotoShop?

    24GB RAM
    SSD for boot drive
GHz, but not necessarily dual. Apple doesn't sell dual 3.33s.
A single 3.33 6-core should do fine and "sweet spot" (when looking, there is "4-core" build to order..,. and like everything else on the Store, why in heavens they didn't be more accurate and clear and say "single socket" and then have "dual processor configurations" 0 I guess the writers don't understand or know workstations or jargon? I say that 'cause some have trouble even finding the 6-core 3.33 choice ($1200 over stock 2.8 4-core).
W3680 though can be found on Buy.com for $620 (was $589 at earlier date) and people are known to then sell the stock cpu $300 making it even more attractive and save $600-900 that way rather easily. Or not.
But yes, I would send you to MPG.com site as well and read through what is on there.

  • What's best for a first year Software Engineer college student?

I start classes at New England Tech at the end of March and I needed help in determining if a MacBook Air would be ok for what I need. Hope there are some Software Engineer's out there who can help decide. Definitely going with a Mac and less is better in regards with money. Thanks in advance.

Here are the computer requirements for the AS program:
    "Hardware required (subject to change):
1.5 Gig processor with 1 GIG RAM w/monitor
    80 GIG Hard Drive
    DVD player
    Cable or DSL internet connection
    Microphone/headset/speakers (USB preferred)
    Web camera
    Software required:
    VMWare workstation
    Qbasic
    Windows XP Professional
Office 2003: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint
    Windows 2003 Server
    Visual Studio 2005
Other than VMWare workstation, for which there is a $125 cost to students"
Seems like a PC would be more in order. Unless you purchase a MacBook Pro and create a Windows partition

  • How To Use The Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign CS6 | Creative Suite Podcast: Designers | Adobe TV

With the pen tool in Indesign, is there a way of making the points not join if you want to make a few single lines?

  • I just downloaded the Adobe CS6 Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign trials--and now all my Pages documents are gobbledygook.

On my MacBook Pro (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Mac OS X, 10.7.3), after downloading the Adobe CS6 apps, my Pages documents show up as completely random (at least it seems that way to me) characters.
For example, Somebody HELP me! is rendered as Uqo gdqf { "J GNR" o g#
Is anyone else experiencing a problem such as this. And more importantly, does anyone have an idea how to STOP experiencing a problem such as this?

Seems the CS6 installation has knocked off some of your fonts or replaced them.
Good old Adobe, another whole cycle of bugs!

  • How best to become a proficient Photoshop user (or better)??

    Hello all,
    I'd appreciate a steer.
I am an enthusiastic amateur digital photographer. I am also fairly proficient with computer stuff generally (my degree). In terms of digital photography, I'm off the bottom of the curve but not by much: I understand white balance, the rudiments of colour spaces, luminance, contrast, etc... but as soon as it gets complex I am out of my depth. Bottom line is I think I understand it as well, or better, than most people who come to Photoshop for the first time. So far with PS (CS4) I have managed to remove minor blemishes, fix red eye, adjust contrast and colour to make photos more interesting - but (for example) I got stuck when trying to remove an image from the background.
BASICALLY I want to know how best to learn PS to a professional level; I am smart enough to pick stuff up fast but too busy to attend a training course. So I'm looking for the best book, or the best video tutorial, or whatever that will take me from understanding the basics (tools, brushes, layers, etc) all the way through to being able to create pre-press standard images and "alternative art"!
What do you pros out there recommend, if you can remember that far back? I am thinking I can devote a few hours per week (3-6) and will keep studying as long as it takes.
    Hope to hear from you,
    Thanks
    Alastair

As Curt says, Lynda.com does really have great tutorials, but there are a lot of good ones out there that are free.  For example, Deke McClelland has posted great videos on the top 40 features of Photoshop (his choice of features of course) on his blog http://www.deke.com/dekepod.  (Feature one and two haven't been posted yet.)
Regarding books, I recommend that you go to a bookstore or a site like Amazon.com, where you can preview some of the chapters of the books and read reader reviews.  This is because people learn in different ways, and you need books that cater to your style of learning.  I got the Classroom in a Book books for Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign at a discount when I registered my Adobe software, but I don't use them.  I recently bought Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Photographers, and it is much better for me. You might like something completely different.  It would be great if you would report back on what works best for you.  Good luck!

  • What is Best Way to Handle Things when you dont know Much about them

The buzz words S/4 HANA is here .. 10 Unanswered questions Best things to know about HANA and list continues but am I  all really ready for this ? The question that circles around me
What is best to learn and Explore things when you know much about .. S/4 . can some tell me best ay to handle this ? And does knowledge only help to kill the non experience on this ?
    Awaiting reply

The first thing to do is understand how innovative companies are using S/4HANA. You can do this by watching free broadcasts from SAPPHIRE NOW and the HANA Effect podcast. If you don't understand how the S/4HANA innovations can help, then I think any other learning is just in a vacuum and not going to be productive.
Then I would suggest taking some of the many free courses available from SAP, like this one from OpenSAP.

  • What's the best book to learn Adobe Illustrator for GUI ?

What's the best book to learn Adobe Illustrator (I want to use it for iOS graphical user interface design):
    - Realworld Illustrator
    - Illustrator CS5 Bible
    - Lynda.com Illustrator Essential
    - Lynda.com for Web and Interactive Design
    thanks

    Howdy.
I can't say which is best, but I like  the Visual Quickstart Guide from Peachpit Press. I have it for Photoshop and Illustrator. As the title states, it's for a quick start. A concise description of every tool and option, with simple, easy to follow instructions with screen shots. I have Photoshop CS3, and have well over 10,000 hrs in Ps and have several newer Ps books. But my tattered old Visual Quickstart Guide for Ps 6 is still my first resource when questions arise.
So far as Illustrator goes, I'm only about 100 hours into it, and so far, so good. But it could be just be a case of ignorance is bliss. Mike has thoughtfully posted the link for Peachpit Press above. You can check it out yourself.
    Peace,
    Lee
P.S. Here's a direct link to the guide for Illustrator.
