What's best way to be connected wireless when on the road?

How can my MacBookPro and/or my PC portable be connected wireless to the web when I'm away from home? I have both computers networked via an Airport Extreme router and a cable modem (Comcast in Philadelphia). I have excellent wireless connections anywhere in my house and even out of doors in the immediate area. But how can I be connected wireless elsewhere in the city? Would an Airport Express router be useful?

While away from home, you will need to find and connect to a Wi-Fi network or else subscribe to Verizon or Sprint EVDO service and install an EVDO card or modem on your notebook PC.
It's hard for me to imagine you toting around your Mac Pro!

    What do you mean?
    Icloud is a service from which you can redownload your itunes purchases ( as long as they are still offered in the itunes store).  You need do nothing at all for your itunes purchases to be in icloud.
    You can purchase itunes Match.  This service allows you to keep your music, not itunes purchased, in the cloud.

  • Best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune?

    hi,
    what's best way to add a new section in the middle of a tune? I think I came up with an interesting transition to a tune... what's the best way to try it out?
    please be specific. if it's just select all and cut and move - I already know that one. somehow, I bet there's a better way.
    thanks in advance...

    You should be able to enter the "in" and out" points in the transport bar. And then under the Region menu, choose "Cut/Insert time."
    So if, for instance, you go up to bar 32, and want to add 8 bars, enter 32 1 1 1 in the top transport place, and 40 1 1 1 in the second. Then select "Cut/Insert Time", and an 8 bar whole will be added to your song.
    Be aware that if there are overlapping MIDI notes found at that cut point, Logic will warn you about it, and give you some options. In this case, I think "Keep" would be what you'd want, but every situation is different...
    Hope that helps....

  • Best way to create a conact list from the user profile properties

    We have a customer looking for a phone book utility, starting with a table showing main user information and with some search options. We would like o base it on the user profile properties and not to create an indipendent studion record browser porlet.
    What is best way to create a conact list from the user profile properties ?

    I did something like this using search.  It can get messy, so you need to take care with it.
    * Identify the properties you want to make accessible to search (ex: name, etc.)
            - add them to the user property map
            - flag them as searchable
    * I broke down and used the native server API.  I'd still suggest this approach.
    * Write some simple code to do vcard export if you like
    (my code is all in vb.net)
    I really believe this is the "right" approach, but honestly, this was a bit painful and has been
    messy for us given some other business issues.  (to my chagrin we have users with 2-letter last
    names...)
    I have code you're welcome to poke at, but it's more or less slapped together and has various
    different search methods commented out so you can see how I tinkered w/ the remote vs. server
    API.
    If you'd like it mail me at [email protected] and I'll send you a zipped copy w/ a
    readme.  I hope it may be useful to you as both a starting reference.

    With supervised ipads, what is the best way to transfer photos and videos to the PC? Wireless transfer is not an option in our circumstances.

    There are only two ways of transfering things on the iPad.
      - via WiFi
      - via usb cable
    From what I have read, you need to connect to iTunes on the supervising PC.

  • Repost-Best way of using connection pooling

    I am reposting this, seems best suitable in this category.
    I am using Eclipse 3.1 along with Tomcat 5.0, MySQL 4.1, J2EE1.4. I could set up the JNDI Dataresource connection pooling and tested with small test servlet. Now thinking of having common methods for getting connection / closing / commiting ....etc.
    I wrote following. [Please let me know whether it is correct way of doing it - as i am not very sure]

    I am in a search of best way to use connection pooling. Initially was using simple JDBC call, then modified to JNDI, afterwards tried to have common class. Later came accross the idea of Singleton/Static. I wanted to have a common class which will handle all connection related issues and at the same time give good performance.
    With due respect to all Java Gurus: i got all from web articles/tutorials/java forum etc. There is a long discussion regarding Singlet vs static in this forum. But finally got confused and could not figure out in my case which method shall i make use of, so tried both.
    What I want is somebody pointing out flwas inside my 2 code snippets and guide me about which method shall i adopt in future.
    Static way:
    package common;
    import java.sql.Connection;
    import javax.sql.DataSource;
    import java.sql.SQLException;
    import javax.naming.InitialContext;
    import javax.naming.NamingException;
    public final class ConnectionManager_Static {
         private static InitialContext ctx = null;
         private static DataSource ds = null;
         public ConnectionManager_Static(){     }
         //as the staic method is updating static var i am synchonizing it
         private static synchronized void getDatasource () throws NamingException, SQLException
              if (ds == null){
                   ctx = new InitialContext();
                   ds = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/MySql");
         //making getConnection() also static as it is not instance specific
         public static Connection getConnection () throws NamingException, SQLException, Exception
              Connection conn = null;
              try{
                   if (ds == null) {getDatasource ();}
                   if (ds != null) {
                        conn = ds.getConnection();
              }catch (Exception e){
                   throw new Exception("From ConnectionManager_Static",e);
              return conn;
           }//getConnection
    }Singleton:
    package common;
    import java.sql.*;
    import javax.sql.*;
    import javax.naming.*;
    public final class ConnectionManager_Singleton {
             private static ConnectionManager_Singleton INSTANCE = null;
              private DataSource datasource = null;
              // Private constructor for singleton pattern
             private ConnectionManager_Singleton() throws NamingException{
                   Context ctx = new InitialContext();
                   datasource = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/MySql");
             //synchronized creator for  multi-threading issues
             //another if check to avoid multiple instantiation
             private synchronized static void createInstance() throws NamingException{
                 if (INSTANCE == null) {
                     INSTANCE = new ConnectionManager_Singleton();
             public static ConnectionManager_Singleton getInstance() throws NamingException {
                 if (INSTANCE == null) createInstance();
                 return INSTANCE;
              public Connection getConnection() throws Exception
                   Connection con = null;
                   try{
                        con = datasource.getConnection();
                   }catch(Exception e){
                        throw new Exception("From connection manager singleton ", e);
                   return con;
    }Sorry, It's becoming long.
    Thanaks in advance,

  • Best way to implement connection pooling with tomcat4.0?

    Hi all!
    I need your help:
    What's the best way to implement connection pooling (Oracle Database) with tomcat 4.0?
    I only found ways to implement it in tomcat 4.1, not in 4.0....
    Thanks!
    Michael

    You can use a Datasource managed by tomcat. Earlier versions of tomcat used Exolab's Tyrex for the implementation of the Datasource API which uses connection pooling. Current version uses commons-dbcp and commons-pool (jakarta projects) I think.
    You've got to declare the Datasource in server.xml and then in web.xml of your web app.

  • Just bought macbook air; had macbook macbook with Tiger software. What is best way to upload photos to icloud on old computer without upgrading it's software? thanks.

    just bought a macbook air upgrading from old macbook with Tiger software; what is best way to take photos from old backbook to icloud so I can see them or download on the new air; Have an external harddrive backup. photo library is too large to transfer directly.thanks.

    Memory size has nothing to do with it. I can open my 60GB iPhoto library with only 8GB RAM. Perhaps you have an incompatible version of iPhoto under Tiger with iPhoto under ML.
    As to downloading different photos from iCloud, you would do the same if you ...
    * open iPhoto under Tiger
    * dump the photos individually in to a folder on your external hard drive
    * shut down everything on the old MacBook
    * connect the external hard drive to new MacBook
    * open iPhoto on new MacBook
    * import the photos in the folder on the external hard drive directly in to the new iPhoto
    IOW, you need not use iCloud (even if you could, which you cannot) to swap photos as you propose.
    If you are at a loss for space on your external hard drive for whatever reason (perhaps that external hard drive is a full Time Machine partition), I recommend that you buy another external hard drive just for your photos.

  • One headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

    one headphone does not work or works 50% of the time.  What is best way to resolve?

    First of all, I'd recomend resetting the iPod. Do this by pressing the 'Menu' and 'Center" buttons for 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears.
    If this doesn't work, then it sounds like a hardware fault.
    To identify the issue, if you have one, try plugging the iPod into a speaker through the dock. If this works, then the issue is with the headphone jack. If not then the logic board is dead.  If the iPod is less than a year old, then it can be repaired by Apple for free. Just book an appointment for the Genius bar.
    If not then, you could see about sending it to an iPod Repair Company, such as my own. A replacement headphone jack would cost £30.00 in the UK, including next day delivery. Other companies you could try would beUKiPodRepairs, but we guarantee to beat any quote that you get.
    Hope that this helps,

  • I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?

    I burned a playlist to a data CD using itunes 11 but what is best way to get it import it into another computer with itunes running?  I get an "X" when trying to copy to the "automatically add to itunes" folder on the 2nd computer.

    ok... so i i just made sure all my music is all together in 1 folder and i am going to trash my old music folder that is in the itunes folder... and follow your directions - let itunes start w/new library and bring my music in. Well, last little hurdle/question. I noticed that the place where my itunes library is - on an external drive doesnt have much space left on it. The place where i gathered all my music together in order to start fresh - is a different external drive and has LOTS of free space on it.
    SO... i now would like to just keep all that freshly compiled clean music right where it is but in advanced preferences I want to point to that new folder on the drive that has so much more space. So... should i delete the old music then go into itunes with a blank library and change the folder in preferences - quit and go back in and then follow your steps to loading my music? If i change the setting of where itunes looks for the music - that doesn't wipe out the old stuff... it just mixes it all up together right? I dont want that!!
    i promise this is the last question - i would love to fix this problem tonight and just be DONE!
    Thanks in advance for your patience and knowledge!!
