I'll post even more details on the After Effects team blog tomorrow.

I love this time of year. The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and NAB-timed announcements are in the air!
In all seriousness, Todd, this looks like a great new update all around!

Congratulations on a significant amount of development.
Not sure yet which ones I would consider "best for me".
Maybe Masking , definitely SG Scope, Master Clip Function.......

  • Logic 8! Put down what we want in the next version. They need to know!

I been using Logic Pro 7 since it came out. Apple updated everything else in there app line but not logic. So lets give Apple some ideas of what we want in the new version. If they don't know what we want we will all be complaining when a new version does come out. Below are just some of the things I want to be added or changed.
    1. New GUI - Apple I know you can make it great (Need some help let me know). Not just the program but your plug-in's too! I seen you spiced them up in Soundtrack Pro 2.
    2. More plug-in's
    3. Update your current plugins such as ultrabeat. Get something going like toontrack dfh superior for great real sounding drums.
    4. Get some pro engineered samples included (drums, bass, guitar, cello, strings, etc.)
    5. Create a better mixer - Let users customize everything about it.
    6. More customizable interface
    and more coming soon...
I know these are just mostly cosmetic and add-on stuff i listed but I will put some better stuff later. Come on everyone put want you want let them make the best audio program every!

    My top wishes:
    1. The ability to import Sonar projects. Before I made the big switch to Mac, I was using Sonar under Windows. I still have a million unfinished songs I was working on in Sonar that I'd like to import into Logic. Apple does want to make the transition from Windows to Mac easy, doesn't it?
    2. Improved user interface. If Apple isn't already aware that Logic's UI needs to be revamped, then, well, we have a problem. Now, people usually figure out Garage Band without any trouble in a short time, at the same time as Logic has an enormously steep learning curve. I think a lot of Logic's learning curve is unnecessary and stems from a very unconventional and non-standard way of working. So ... Logic needs to dump the weirdness and just redo the whole interface as a standard Mac app ... even with some flair.
And then there are the annoyances, like the Cycle feature sitting right on top of the Song Position Line. I must mistakenly click on the Cycle area at least a dozen times an hour while I'm working, with a disruption every time. What on earth were they thinking?
    3. Better support for MIDI hardware synths. I have a Motif rack ES, Triton Extreme, E-mu Vintage Pro with some extra expansion ROMs, ... I expected to be able to just hook these synths up and load some instrument definitions that come bundled with Logic (like you can do with Sonar). Boy, was I wrong! Holy Moly! It took me something like two weeks to get those synths set up, with a huge waste of my time poking around the Internet, entering a lot of information by hand, and fiddling with Logic's very confusing Environment. Not doesn't Apple bundle the common synth definitions with Logic, they don't even maintain a central repository where people can share those things. And nobody else has a really good repository either. This is a totally unacceptable mess.
In principle, there's a lot of power in the Environment concept. The problem is that it's too complex to figure out, and Environments are too hard to share, and there aren't enough of them available for download or bundled with Logic.

  • I've installed the full version of After Effects, but codecs like MPEG2 and MPEG2-DVD are still miss

The title kind of explains it. I've installed Master Collection CS5.5 as a full version, but After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder are still missing the protected content. I've rebooted and updated, and rebooted again. I've installed as a trial and then entered the serial number later, and I've also tried using the serial number during the install. It seems no matter what combination I try, I can't get MPEG2 to show up in the export list.

  • The next step following After Effects

    Hello all,
Before I start, I'll say that this isn't a technical question, more of a call for direction.
I've been using After Effects for several years now, and the quality of work has been fantastic.  I enjoy the program's capabilities and couldn't be happier with the amount I have learned over the course of my last few projects.  This being said, I feel that it is time to make the jump into the three dimensionsal world (a big jump, I know), and I guess I'm sort of stuck at this fork in the road.
I know the direction in which I want to design, yet I am not sure which program will suit me best.  I've done plenty of readings on maya, 3ds, 4d, etc, and most comment on what your company prefers, what learning curve you are ready to take on and so forth.  These are all great suggestions, but I still sit here pondering which road to take.
If there is more advice, please give it.  If I am being a procrastinating bum, please reinforce this notion.  Either way any insight would be appreciated.  I'll leave you all with this: I think exactly WHAT I want to design may be the best indication of which direction I should lead.  I am most interested in potentially modeling products for companies, putting together short presentations demonstrating a client's capabilities (sort of a how-to video), and so forth...  Thanks for reading!

All 3D apps are going to be a new experience for you. I use Blender a lot. It has excellent integration with AE now and it's open source so it's free. It will run on about any computer. I also use C4D and Maya, but not so often. I just have them to integrate with a few of my clien'ts workflow's. C4D has excellent integration with AE.
C4D is used by a great number of AE artists and, as commercial 3D apps go it's fairly affordable. Lots of folks use 3D Studio Max, Maya, and other apps. It just depends on what you are going to do and what kind of production pipeline you have to work with. I usually recommend that folks on a budget start out with Blender and see if they like or are comfortable with 3D.
Here's one thing to consider. All 3D work uses basically the same theory but the keyboard shortcuts, UI, and interface are different. Those things all change some with each version of a program. It's more important to learn the theory than the software.

  • I try to install the trial version of After Effects and it gives me an error telling me to restart even after I restart.

I try to install the trial version of Adobe After Effects but when it goes to the installer, it gives me an error telling me to restart my laptop. Even after I restart my laptop it gives me the error. Help?

We can't know. You have not provided any system information or the exact error. Most commonly this happens when a security tool is blocking the installers or you run with insufficient user privileges, but that's all we can kinda guess here.

  • I can't download the test version of After Effects and Premiere

    Hallo everyone,
I tried to download the test version of AE and Pr on adobe.com but I always end up downloading a Setup EXE foo the cloud, wich i already have. If i start the cloud, I can download the test version of produkts like Audition ect but AE and Pr don't show up there. My Question: Am I doing something wrong?.
I signed in, i'm running creative cloud (which means i downloaded and installed) and i have the 30days test version of the cloud.
I thank you for your help and i hope someone has an idea.

If thats the reason than Adobe should mark these applications instead of hiding them....i was searching for hours...
im very thankful for your help i will check on a stronger PC.

  • Global Switches for Frame Blend and Motion Blur aren't working with the newest version of After Effects 2014.1.1

I have been using After Effects regularly since 1995. So this isn't an operator error.
I am on a new Mac Pro six core with OSX 10.9.5 and 32 gigs of RAM.
Is anyone else having trouble with activating frame blend and motion blur?
Occasionally I am able to get the global switch to appear to be on. It still won't activate motion blur or frame blend.

I'll answer my own issue. The global switches actually work. The distinct dark boxes that indicate when the global switches are enabled have been removed and replaced by a light blue outline of the switch icon.

  • I have a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. Why don't I have the newest version of After Effects?

I am up to date on all of my updates through the Adobe Application Manager, but I only have version 11. Any idea of why this is?

Because your system does not meet the minimum system requirements or because you have not installed the Creative Cloud App.

  • The Next Version of Premiere Pro CC - Warp Stabilizer

With the recent post of what's coming in the next version of PPro CC, I was sad to see no mention of Warp Stabilizer. As amazing of an effect as it is, it needs a bit of help. I know there are improvements and fixes that probably weren't mentioned in the post so I'm still holding out hope. We use Warp Stabilizer more than anyone I know. Several hundred times per week. Yes, per week, no exaggeration. Over the last few years, we've built an entire style of shooting around the strengths of this awesome effect that emulates the use of a slider, steadicam and crane all without having to have them. So we've become really familiar with its PROS and CONS.
Here is a short list of SEVEN things that should be addressed with regards to warp stabilizer within Premiere Pro CC to maximize its effectiveness (and yes we did submit multiple Feature Requests for these so far to no avail):
FIrst and foremost and by far MOST IMPORTANT to us - Allow users to create a CUSTOM PRESET with any altered settings that will engage (or begin Analyzing/Stabilizing) automatically when added to a clip!! This is huge. If you double click on Warp Stabilizer with a clip selected, it is applied to that clip and begins the process of stabilizing that clip. However, the vast majority of the time we need to alter the settings of the effect. If we create a custom preset, that's all fine and good, but when we add that to a clip, it does NOT begin stabilizing. Instead you have to manually go into the Effect Controls for each clip and select ANALYZE. Huge waste of time when adding this effect to hundreds of clips. PLEASE FIX!
BUG when saving projects!!! - If this is not a bug, it needs to be fixed because it's awful. - If you have more than one sequence with multiple warp stabilizations added and GPU ACCELERATION IS ENABLED, then after you SAVE a project (or if it auto-saves) when you toggle between the two sequences you are hit with a delay or freeze while the render bar goes from Yellow to Red...and finally back to yellow again. No work can be done during this delay/freeze. The more stabilized clips, the longer the delay. For us, on our larger projects this delay is sometimes 30 seconds to almost a full minute! Once it turns back to yellow, you can toggle between sequences without the delay...but as soon as it saves again...and you toggle between sequences, the delay hits again. If this is a bug, or somehow a result of Premiere Pro's way of CACHING projects after it's saved, then I sincerely hope it's fixed asap. It's awful!
The third is more of a feature request than a fix - Add the ability to set the maximum scale to work WITH the smoothness control so that if you never want your clips to scale more than say 105%, you can set that and have Warp Stabilizer stabilize the clip and adjust the "smoothness" percentage from the default "50%" down to whatever it needs to be in order for that clip to be fully stabilized and scaled to no more than 105%. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is not possible currently. Right now we have to manually adjust each clip if it is initially scaled too much by dropping down the Smoothness %.
Another great feature would be the ability to manually keyframe the scaling so that if you have a longer clip that starts fairly steady, then needs to be smoothed out a bit more in the middle, before it ends relatively steady again, you can slowly and seamlessly ramp up the stabilization/scaling so that the whole clip doesn't have to be scaled to make up for the misgivings of one portion of the clip.
Minor bug - sometimes when you have extended the length of a clip, the clip needs to be re-analyzed again. However, the "analyze" button is often greyed out. You need to click away from the clip and then click on the clip again to make that button appear again. Nothing big, but still, a small bug.
After Effects Warp Stablizer VFX feature carried over - It would be nice to carry over to Premiere the ability to isolate what in frame is supposed to be stable (sometimes someone nodding their head can trick the effect into thinking that it's the camera shaking). Great to have it in AE, but would be nice to carry over to Premiere Pro CC.
Finally, I've always believed that no matter how cool "Subspace Warp" sounds, it is not as effective as "Position, Scale & Rotation". This SHOULD be the deafult "method" within the Warp's settings. I'd say 95% of the thousands and thousands of clips we've stabilized we ended up switching the "Method" within the settings to "Position, Scale & Rotation" because it either scaled the shot less or created less "wobble" in the resulting stabilized clip. I know everyone shoots differently, and sometimes Subspace Warp is the way to go, but we have stabilized all sorts of shots with great success by simply switching this setting. Granted...if #1 on this list was taken care of we could then easily have this set as our default setting.
Hopefully this list either reaches someone within Adobe that can do something about them or at the very least inspires others to write feature requests and bug fixes as we have. Even resolving #1, #2 and #3 would be HUGE and would save our editors probably 10 hours per week.  It's an awesome effect, far better than "smoothcam" on FCP7, it just needs a little love.

    CoSA_DaveS wrote:
All good points, thanks for posting.
For #1, you can make this work in AE at least. This tip is from my colleague DanW:
If you make a preset by only selecting the values you change (and not a preset for the whole effect) then it will auto-analyze on apply.
Simplest way: apply WS, make edits, hit UU to reveal changed params, select all "i-beams" in the Timeline, drag them to the Effects & Presets panel.
For #4, you can get manual control over the scaling by setting Framing to Stabilize Only, and then keyframe Additional Scale to taste. At one point we were going to try to automate this, but found automatic scaling to be very subjective as to the best way to handle it.
For #6, Warp Stabilizer will not track areas with zero alpha channel. So you can pre-mask the input to reveal just the parts you want to stabilize. Do this inside a nested sequence, with Warp Stabilizer applied downstream (in the outer sequence). The just-announced masking & tracking capabilities of the next CC version should be handy for this.

    Hi DaveS!
Great to hear that you guys are taking a look at this list. Hope it helps make it better.  #1, #2, and #3 are by far the biggest time killers for us so hopefully they'll be able to be fixed/resolved within Premiere soon.
Regarding your note about #1: Allowing this functionality within Premiere specifically would be very helpful. Would it be possible to eventually allow Premiere to auto-analyze when a saved custom preset is applied to a clip? I tried it in AE as you suggested, and couldn't figure it out. But realistically we use Warp Stabilizer on so many clips that round tripping literally hundreds of short clips to AE would be just as time consuming as going into the settings in premiere for each one and adjusting the parameters. We usually adjust the method and then adjust the smoothness scale so that it doesn't "Auto-Scale" more than 104%. That's where our #3 suggestion would help. I didn't quite understand how to make a preset of specific changed values. I tried, but couldn't follow DanW's suggestion. Granted, I'm not that great with AE. I really just use it for the Warp VFX's ability to isolate what in frame is stabilized (hope that comes to Premiere one day) and that's about it. And I really only have to do that a couple times per project. Anyway, I'm sure I'm doing DanW's suggestions wrong but regardless, I'm not sure it would save us much time when we have several hundred individual little clips that would all need to be sent to AE. Any hope for adding this auto-analyze functionality (hopefully allowing a custom preset on the whole effect and all it's adjusted parameters) in Premiere CC?
Regarding your note about #4: That is a valid work around for now. I appreciate that thought. Thanks!
Regarding your note about #6: I think I half understand what you described. I'd have to try it. Although, as I said before, the AE way of doing it is ideal and I just hoped that ability to show the tracking points and delete them over time would come to Premiere CC one day. When the next CC comes out I'd love to try this masking method although I think I'll have to claify exactly what you want me to do just to be safe. Is there no hope to port this added functionality that's in AE's Warp VFX over to Premiere's Warp Stabilizer? Again, not the end of the world for us. I'd rather #1, #2 and #3 be addressed inside Premiere Pro CC for now.
Fixing the first 3 on this list would be HUGE time saver for us.
Thanks again DaveS to you and the rest of the Adobe team for looking into this list. Very much appreciated.

  • Details of video preview with Mercury Transmit in the 2014 update to After Effects CC

In the 2014 update to After Effects CC, which is available today, the technology used for video preview on an external monitor has been replaced with Mercury Transmit technology from Premiere Pro. Read about it in detail here:
    http://bit.ly/AE_video_preview
Please post in this thread to discuss or ask questions about these changes.
Read about all of the other changes coming to the 2014 update to After Effects CC here:
    http://bit.ly/AE_CC_next_details

    Jef,
It's your choice if you wish to use Mercury Transmit with your AJA cards, or the AJA Preview plug-in. You do not need to uninstall anything, but you should disable the one you are not using.
The differences between the two are subtle, but can be simplified (very grossly simplified) to speed vs. accuracy.
The AJA Preview plug-in has a performance advantage over Mercury Transmit. AJA is able to optimize the frame throughput because they have better access to their hardware. You should be able to get real-time previews under most circumstances.
Mercury Transmit has better access to the After Effects pixel buffer than the AJA Preview plug-in. For example, when color management is enabled in the project, Mercury Transmit will apply color transforms. These color transforms require additional processing, which can slow down the preview speed and drop it below real-time.
Performance of video preview in After Effects (any version, using any of the available technologies) otherwise tends to be a straightforward equation of the computer's processor horsepower vs. the requirements of the frames being pushed (frame size + frame rate + color depth + color management). In the "performance of RAM preview when video preview is enabled" section of this page, I've detailed what levers you can pull to affect the performance of video preview in After Effects:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2014/05/video-preview-mercury-transmit-after-effects.h tml
If you continue to have problems, please post more detail about the settings you are using, especially whether you are using greater than 8-bpc color or color management in the project. Machine specs and the state of the machine, including the amount of RAM, free RAM, and other applications running, will also be helpful. Please also state, given all of the above, what frame rate is being reported in the Info panel during RAM preview playback.

  • Unable to launch trial version of After effects: Mac OS X

I am unable to install the trial version of After Effects CS4. Downloaded 4 times with both Safari and Firefox. I get to the Adobe After Effects CS4 folder. The setup icon does nothing. Launching the bootstrapper.dmg file gets me to a folder with an Ri icon. Clicking on that yields an error message: The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -10822). I am running OSX 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro [pre unibody). I feel really dumb biut what am I not doing?

Do you run as admin (in Mac terms User can manage computer in your user profile options)? That might be something to look into (though the primary user always is admin). Short of that, the usual: Other Adobe apps could be blocking the way and require to be uninstalled or "cleaned" using the CS3/ CS4 Clean Scripts/Utilities from the support pages.

  • Problem installing trial version of After Effects CS4

    Hi,
I'm trying to install the trial version of After Effects CS4 on Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 32-bit Operating System, Processor 2.4GHz, RAM 4GB.
At the initializing stage it gets to 90% on the 'Checking System Profile...' dialog box, something flashes and then it freezes.
I've downloaded it a second time in case of corruption.
I've rebooted several times and retried it with no other applications running.
I've run updates on any existing adobe products I have.
Any ideas?  I've never had problems installing adobe products before.
    Thanks.

    Not your fault, known issue.
    a) Download the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility and install it
    b) Download the CS4 Cleanup Utility from Adobe's support pages
    c) Run the CS4 Cleanup, electing to remove all debris from your failed install
    d) Manually uninstall all instances of Adobe AIR products (Acrobat.com, Adobe Media Palyer) using Add or Remove Programs
    e) Launch the Microsoft Installer Cleanup and look for instances of Adobe Installer 2.0. Have them removed. Optionally, have it remove other Adobe stuff that may have been left over from CS4.
    f) Try to install CS4
Note: The cleanup utilities will not remove anything physically, only clean out the installer, so they pose no danger to your system. You will only lose the ability to uninstall those programs from Add or Remove Programs.
