My computer most recently caught a virus and I had to restore my system. Now that I have re installed I-Tunes and have all of my music on my computer including songs that were purchased. When I try to Sync my I-pod it want allow me to, it gives off a message "Sync and Erase". What is that? What is it tryin to erase? The songs from my I-pod or the songs in my music library in I-tunes? I have purchased new songs and have new podcasts, but I'm afraid to sync. How do I get around this? PLEASE HELP ME!

hi, if it erases everything on the ipod, then where is the music library?
my son (13) did an upgrade of itunes and he synced and erased. there were over 150 songs and now only 1/3 is in the library. btw, a backup wasn't done. could u help me find the music?

  • What gets erased? -sync

I bought a new/used iPhone 4 and want to copy my music to it, but it's not letting me.
History: I backed up my old iPhone 3, using iTunes. I then connected my iPhone 4, and restored.
That worked. I then got my current phone book, apps, text messages, and photos on my new iPhone 4.
In iTunes, my new phone shows up.
However, when I try to manually copy music to my iPhone, nothing happens. The iPhone doesn't "highlight," it doesn't copy.
I went to Options and clicked on Manually Manage music and videos. I think that's what I want. When I do this, I get a message, "The iPhone is synched with another iTunes library on "Powerbook." Do you want to erase this iPhone and synch with this iTunes library?
I don't quite understand this message. Can someone help me understand what it means?
What does it want to erase?
This is a new (to me) iPhone. It was previously erased and restored.
So this iPhone has not been synced with anything else. There is no music on it.
I think I used exactly the same name on this new iPhone 4, as I used on my old iPhone 3. I wonder if that could be confusing it.
When I says it will erase this iPhone, I'm not sure if it's referring to ONLY the music (there isn't any) or if it's also going to erase my photos, text messages, etc.
    Thank you

So far, I haven't done either. It's not letting me sync or manually manage. It would be the first time, when I do it.
Maybe the problem is "Do you want to Erase this iPhone?" sounds like it is going to erase the whole iPhone.
Maybe it should say, "Do you want to erase the music (only) on this iPhone, even if you don't actually have any music on it?'

    Hello buddyacw
You would have to restore the iPhone. Download the latest version of iTunes and then follow the steps in the article below to get it working again.

I can't do that since I do nothing with Windows.
It sounds like it was hacked to run XP and then makes it not run OS X now.
Only thing I can suggest is to repartition the hard drive to a single HFS+, GUID partition and see if that allows you to install OS X.

you have to erase the drive and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

  • Buy iDefrag or restore the system via TimeMachine? What's the better/faster way?

    Hi there!
I'm thinking about either buying iDefrag or restoring my system.
As I read on several websites there is no need to defrag Mac OS X because HFS+ automatically does (more or less). But: if the free space on the HD goes below 10% the OS can no longer defrag itself even if you delete files and free space increases again. Is that true at all?
As I had only 40GB left out of 500GB I am now thinking about what to do. Is there any need to defrag or restore (iDefrag: 27€ / system restore: just some time)? Would any of those two options speed up my Mac? Or should I do nothing? I'm not sure if the Mac is slower than it should be at all.
Thanks for your opinios and evaluations.

  • I am trying to sync my 5th gen. nano. However, I keep getting an error message.  The message says:  The iPod, "whoever's" iPod cannot be synced. The file format is not valid.  Don't know what to do except restore factory settings.

I could not find anything on this particular problem on apples support site.  Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited.

You need to be very specific.  Exactly what are you syncing over to your iPod Nano?  Can't help you unless we know which files are problematic.
Are you manually syncing or automatically syncing?  If the latter, try syncing manually.
If you are getting the "the file format is not valid" message, suggest that you check out KB Article:  http://support.apple.com/kb/sp569 which will tell you which files are "acceptable."

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
    Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

  • IPhone syncing restoring issues between 4S and 5 and iCloud issues between send & receive addresses

First question: I just bought the iPhone 5 and I am trying to sync/restore all of my information (docs, data, photos) from 4S to the 5 via iTunes and iCloud but it will not let me do it. So how can sync all of my contacts, photos and documents (especially important text messages) from the 4S to 5?
Second question: I also want to know how can I stop sending and receiving messages from BOTH phones! I have two different companies and two different phone numbers but both phones share the SAME iCloud account? Should I have created a new one when I first activated the 5?
Please help I've only been an iPhone and iTunes user since November 2012 and I don't know what I am doing!!

Apparently you must be very narrow minded. I don't want to develop an e-mail client from the scratch.
I would implement the sync the following way.
Assuming I use POP3 on both my iPhone and my MacBook. On my iPhone mail client I am downloading e-mails and reading them from time to time and replying. There is an ended set of what you actions you can do with your e-mails. Every e-mail has a unique ID / fingerprint - you can recognize it with 100% accuracy. I'm also downloading e-mails on my MacBook mac mail and performe the same ended set of actions on this e-mails. So the system architecture should be as follows:
    1. MacBook mail client queues all the actions I have performed with my e-mails on my MacBook.
    2. iPhone mail client does the same - creates a queues with actions I have performed on my iPhone.
    3. If I have the syncing turned on on both of my devices and I'm logged in on both of them with the same Apple ID both devices process the queues to my iCloud, compare it and update status of my e-mails according to the actions in each queue.
So I will rather wait until Apple will do this simple solution.

  • Need help restoring entire system

Last night I decided to upgrade the harddrive in my iMac and then use Time Machine to restore my system. However, I ran into a bit of a snag. When I go to restore I have to select the file I want to restore from. Time Machine states that it only shows "complete backups", however I find this very inaccurate as the list showed every single backup for each hour they were created. If I selected the last backup it wouldn't copy anything, reboot and hang until it loaded the cd again. I then selected the first backup since I know it contained the entire system. That worked fine, however, obviously I had made several changes since the first backup. Most of my apps are missing as well as all file changes that were made. I can't find a way to simply restore my system to the last state it was in. If I reboot and tell it to restore the last backup it erases the drive and ofcourse there are no files for it to copy over. How do I get my system to look exactly like it did prior to changing the hard drive? There has to be a way to do this using Time Machine since they claim you can restore your system after a hard drive failure.

Just to clarify what I did. I booted using the DVD and can successfully restore my system from a Time Machine backup, however, I can only restore using the first backup Time Machine makes (where it backs up the entire system). What I can't get it to do is restore from the last backup point. So basically I can restore my system to look like it did on October 26th, but I can't restore it to look like it did yesterday. The problem with that is not only am I not able to see applications I have installed since the first backup, but all the file changes I have made are gone. If I try to reboot from DVD and restore from backup and select the last backup that was made on Nov 7th, it says it is "copying files" but within 10 seconds the system reboots and loads from the DVD again because the Nov 7th backup didn't contain anything (although the Backup process says it only shows "complete backups" I assume it shows more than that. I will try again tonight and select the last backup to see if it works properly the second time around.

  • Erase and restore my 2006 17" macbook pro

i wish to erase and restore my 17" macbook pro, however my install disc has a classic portion in the install and so it will not install.
"classic portion of this install is no longer compatable"...is what comes up. Anyone???

No, switching the drive for a 1Tb drive isn't going to allow the machine to run Mountain Lion... and you're not alone in wanting a 17" model. But I kind of doubt that Apple's going to come out with a new 17" notebook (they could always surprise us).
You may want to look into getting a 15" non-Retina model - you can upgrade the hard drive and the RAM yourself with the non-Retina version. I don't know when Apple's planning to come out with new MacBook Pro models - but I hope that they will continue to offer as 'open' a system as possible (just one of the reasons I wouldn't purchase a Retina model).
So save your pennies... or make that trip to the bank for a loan!

  • How can I restore my system to a smaller drive?

I have lost my Macbook Pro that had 250GB hard drive, which probably had 230GB full of stuff. My replacement computer (for now) is MacBook Air with 128GB SSD. Fortunately I have Time Capsule with latest backup but now I don't know what to do.
I'd like to restore my system but I know I could keep some of the files on external HDD. For example my iTunes and iPhoto library has probably 100-120 GB altogether so I think the system would fit without these files.
    How can I do this?
Another question - can I copy the sparsebundle file of my MacBook Pro from Time Capsule to external HDD and create exact copy of my old hard drive? Just in case, to have it on two places in case new Time Machine backups rewrite the old ones

Wow that's a lot of info. So:
I shouldn't do time machine system restore because I'm using different computer
Is migration assistant launched after clean OS install?
Can I choose specific folders to restore? For example I want to restore iPhoto app but I want to move my iPhoto library somewhere else.
Can I move sparsebundle image from Time Capsule to external drive? Macbook Air does not have ethernet and restoring everything over wifi would take ages I guess. Plus I want to have another copy of the old system somewhere else than Time Capsule.
