What's Faster: 8 core 1.86GHz or 4 Core 3GHz in 2007 machine

Hello- Thinking of buying a used Mac Pro. What's a better bet:
upgraded machine with 8 core 1.86GHz processors (2x4)
or
Stock 4 core 3.0 GHz (2x2)
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I don't how this applies in the world of multi core machines, but in the old single vs. double the answer was it depended upon what you wanted to do. A slower double could be faster than a faster single in a case where you were doing heavy processing that tied up the machine a lot. A multi processor computer was better at handling multiple tasks and therefore was faster simply because it did not have to wait for something else to complete before dong a simple task. If you just had one, simple task then the faster single would beat a slower multi. I don't know if this extrapolates to multi vs. multi.

  • What's the difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo

I recently bought a new Macbook (Original) with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
I gave my old one to my younger cousin. It has just an Intel Core Duo processor.
    What does that "2" mean?
Does it mean the processor is faster?
I was guessing it means that I can have more RAM (because this can hold 4 GB instead of 2 GB, like my previous Macbook)...
Both these Macbooks have only 1 GB of RAM, yet the new one seems MUCH faster. The only real difference in technical specs is the processor. Could the processor be responsible for the much faster computer, or is it simply because it's a new computer?
    Thanks!

Part of that has to do with the chipsets, although I've heard that some of the Intel chipsets work with both the Core Duo and the earlier Core 2 Duo.
The Core Duo is the dual-processor version of the Core processor.
The Core 2 Duo is the dual-processor version of the newer generation Core 2 processor.
The Core 2 series is more advanced. They likely are produced on faster semiconductor processes in smaller "geometries". I think part of it is a higher operating clock speed, but it could also include advances in processing power where it takes fewer average clock cycles to complete certain instructions. There could be things like more pipelines, faster/more arithmetic logic units, and other architectural improvements that makes it work faster overall even without clock-speed increases.

  • What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo or...............

What do ya think? Buy a iMac Core Duo 20" now or wait longer for the newer intel chips to come out and just be happy with my 17" G5 iMac?

If there is nothing wrong with your current machine, then why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading?
I have a rev B iMac G5, and am happy with it. A couple of weeks ago I got an iMac CD --- not to upgrade my current system, but to supplement it, as my little design studio is expanding and requires a second unit. Sure, the intel version is a bit faster---but not by much. Not enough to really make me consider trading in my other iMac,the G5,for a Duo Core.
So if you're perfectly happy with the G5 you have now, why rush into trading it in when there is a lot of life left in it yet. Think about it: the rev Bs aren't even a year old!

  • Memory Question "4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig?" what is faster?

Memory Question "*4x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig*?" what is faster?
I'm still don't know if witch to choose?
4 times 1 gigabyte Ram Memory is cheaper but if I choose for 2 times 2 GB Ram I can always beef it it later.
And is my memory faster if I'm using 4 slots with 1 gig over 2 slot with 2 gig?
I'm asking this question because I think using 4 times the memory bandwidth will be faster?

    Hello Jan
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The iMac (Late 2009): Installing or replacing memory article and your User's Guide are pretty clear, they both say that +"You can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot."+ and not 1GB modules. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3918
To upgrade your ram you will want at least 2 more 2 or 4GB modules and add that to the current 2 x 2GB of ram. > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/DDR321.527

  • What is faster thunderbolt or usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet

What is faster a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter or a usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter?
    Thanks

Both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 have bandwidths that exceed gigabit ethernet so based on theoretical numbers they should perform the same. However, different product manufacturers will write different drivers and use different hardware so unless you test specific products the question can't really be answered. Probably have to wait until magazines such as MacWorld or other Mac related websites test and compare devices.

I have an early 2008 macbook pro that is running slow after upgrading to lion. Is there anything I can do? this is what I have,Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • Since my macbook pro is an intel core duo but not a core 2 duo, I cannot upgrade to Yosemite.  So... what OS X can I upgrade to with this computer?

Since my macbook pro is an intel core duo but not a core 2 duo, I cannot upgrade to Yosemite.  So... what OS X can I upgrade to with this computer? Thanks for the input.

Intel Core Duo is a 32-bit processor, so the latest Mac OS X version you can install is Mac OS X Snow Leopard -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You are running Mac OS X 10.6.8, so you are already running the most recent Mac OS X version for your computer.

  • Is the Core i7 processor comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz core 2 duo from 2009?

I am looking to get a new MacBook Air, but when looking at the prices I am seeing the MacBook Pro 13" for the same price and a lot more guts (RAM and Processor).  I am ok with spending the amount of money on the air if it means I get a computer that is like my iPad, which i love (flash based, snappy), but don't want it to be super slow.
I am coming off of a 17" 2.8Ghz MacBook Pro from 2009.  I was happy with the speed and power of that machine.  The most taxing thing I did was make a complilation of family movies in iMovie and burned them with iDVD once in the 2 years of ownership.
I mostly browse the internet and compose written documents, and keynote presentations.
I know my questions may seem stupid, but I don't know how significant the changes between i7 and Core 2 Duo are, so I ask the question:
I am wondering if the processing power in the core i7 will be somewhat comparable, much slower, or faster than the 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo I had in my 2009 computer?
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi brosephb,
Like you I went through a similar comparison process. I bought the MacBook air 13" and up specced the processor and memory. I don't do anything taxing enough or frequently enough to NEED the extra power of the MacBook pro.
I am overjoyed at my air. It's gorgeous, the way it wakes instantly, it's speed and it's portableness is so endearing that I just don't use my iPad anymore. I read numerous reviews on it and the overwhelming opinion was it's addictive ease of use because of it's slim, light and rapid waking. At work I can hold the air with one hand, open it rapidly at will. It's just great but it's made my iPad redundant (for me anyway).
I see the new airs are even faster and I'm tempted to consider selling my 6 month old air and getting the new one, but, it runs a dream so I am happy to just be envious of the new one.
In short, unless you need the power (for your work) go for the air. I'm looking at a new iMac to use as a home work station. For the price of a new air I can get an iMac that will swallow any task for a good few years to come. And my air will suffice as my mobile companion. However, that's just me spoiling myself as, at the moment, I have no teal need for another mac. I may get the cinema display for any long winded tasks, as the screen size will help with multiple tasking.
A bit of a ramble, hope this is useful.

  • What is faster, an iphone 6 or a samsung galaxy s6?

what is faster,an iphone 6 or a samsung galaxy s6

    Hi there
I’d be happy to help with your device question! As far as performance goes, these two devices are considered to be quite evenly matched, however in benchmark tests, the Samsung Galaxy S6 appears to outperform the iPhone 6. In normal day-to-day usage, you’d be hard pressed to be able to tell the two apart when it comes down to performance! I’d recommend visiting one of our AT&T company stores where you can test them out for yourself!
    I hope this helps!

  • What is faster Me.Filter or Me.RecordSource

I created a form that Search As You Type. When you type in a combo box, Access displays matching records. I use the On Change event with a private Sub. To find the records you can use the Form Filter or Form RecordSource property with a Sql Where Clause.
Finding the records is compute intensive. In general, what is faster to use:
    Me.Filter or Me.RecordSource?
    Thanks

In short: it doesn't matter much but one or the other may be preferable depending on the circumstances.

  • What is faster: DataReader or DataSet or something else?

    Hi,
I need to read 250,000 records and show this information.
I am using DataReader and it takes 8 seconds. I need to raise it to 0.8 seconds atleast.
What is faster: DataReader or DataSet or something else?
    Thank's

Is it an I/O issue?  Have you tried looking at
some performance counters to see where the bottleneck might be?
Is it a query issue?  How complex is the
query?  Do you have proper indexes in place?

  • What's faster???

    hello
One way is to transit data from one table MSSQL to another one on ORACLE, like in LKM SQL to ORACLE.
Second way is to unload data to file with BCP at the first and then load it to data base ORACLE with SQL-loader.
    What's faster???

If you are dealing with larger volumes of data, it is almost certainly going to be using the BCP/External-Table/SQLLOADER option. If you are dealing with small and frequent movements, the overheads of process invocation with the latter might be unwarranted.
    It depends!

  • Whats a faster internet connection joining one or create one.i have one ps3 i imac 2 ipads and one macbook pro?

whats a faster internet connection joining one or create one.i have one ps3 one imac 2 ipads and one macbook pro?

For the AirPort Extreme Base Station to provide Internet access to network clients, it would need to be configured for: 1) Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address, and 2) Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network.
Although the option: Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network, exists for the Extreme, it really serves no purpose and should not be used.

What type of tasks take addvantage of multi core?
Currently on my powermac I... photoshop large files, some video conversion (avi -> DVD via visual hub), and the reason why I'm considering upgrading is playing 1080p movies in VLC; currently choppy as all ****. Also when I figure it out converting these 1080p movies to a watchable format on my TV screen; probally going to have to wait till I get a blue-ray burner,
Trying to figure if I should go all out on my next purchase with multiple cores.

  • What is "Fast Retry" of CodeType in Return Code

What is "Fast Retry" of CodeType in Return Code.
    Thanks.

    Hi Torsten
It seems very useful. Some updates will fail, because it is running, and it needs to be closed before update.
Will it repeat until the exit code isn't "Fast Retry" or it has repeat time?
    Thanks
