What's Gone Wrong At Nokia?

Question

After reading the superb 'Open Letter to Nokia', I am wondering where it all went wrong?
I have always used Nokia and just like most on these forums I feel a 'loyalty' to Nokia, but after receiving the N8 I am so disappointed.
I will be receiving my replacement N8 tomorrow but I am worried, will it be any better? Am I just being narrow minded or does my (our) loyalty mean anything to Nokia?
Where did it all go wrong and please, please, please give me hope....?

I think you are painting with too broad a brush. Some faults are due to manufacturing defects that slip through the manufacturing QA process. Some are installed at the factory, design bugs in the software, implementation bugs in the software, or design bugs in the hardware. You need to distinguish between them to properly analyze what's happened to Nokia. I do not believe that Nokia's problems, for the most part, are due to their inability to manufacture hardware with an acceptably low defect rate (the N8 might be an exception; we don't know yet). I believe that the vast majority of Nokia's faults were installed at the factory. They have consistently produced poor software designs and then implementated them badly, adding insult to injury; they send out firmware updates with more bugs than the previous version; the ovi.com website is just a joke;  Mail for Exchange doesn't work, etc., etc. A hardware example is the separation of the USB connector from the mainboard of the N900, clearly a design defect.
My point is that it's important to distinguish between the small number of faults that are an inevitable part of even a well-run manufacturing process, vs. faults that can and should be eliminated during design, development and testing, but which have time and again made it through Nokia's broken version of that process. Nokia is not competitive in this crucial area with either Apple or Google at the present time. I believe this is the new CEO's most significant challenge, because it is a systemic problem.

I agree more with the author of this line.  But hardly Nokia needs to come back.

The second view may be too pessimistic or negativ considering the huge amounts of phones NOKIA ships every year.
I think DA forgets these two reasons of complaints:
The most complaints here may be due to defects during the transportation and mistakes made by users. Or simply, users can't use phones properly. Statistically, the number of  the complaints here is very low. But the more complicated the phones get , the more complaints will be seen here. The amount of complaints may explode in the near future.
I don't think that Nokia is less competitive in the areas of design, development and testing than Apple or Google. As you can see here there are very  few complaints about the simple phone models (i.e. no smartphones).  And so many papers have tested the brand new N8 that it hardly has very big problems not found during the reviews.
The area mentioned in the above two messages is very interesting and it would be nice to know a forum which could be  better suitable for this kind of talk.  Here are many people with real problems and If we increase "love letters" here it's even more difficult to find solutions.
