What's good about 10g?

What is your favourite/ the best feature(s) new to Oracle 10g?
I heard the 'g' stands for Grid. Has anyone taken advantage of the grid features?

This may help;

In release 2 you gotta love DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_BACKTRACE and DML Error Logging if you're a developer.

  • What's good about droid X

I come to this forum and all I see is bad this, broken that, and not working whatever. I would like to here all the good things about the X.
I'll start off with the bad because no one has a perfect phone. I had my droid for about a month and I did have some issues with it,  gps, dropped calls, screen would freeze at the most inconvenient times, sluggish when switching screens, and the battery life was usually less than 8 hours. I called CS and they were more than happy to send me another phone and I received it just a few days ago.
Now the good. since I got the new phone battery life is now over 15 hours on single charge. The phone is much more responsive and switching screens is now a joy to see. No problems with screen freezing up. I still get dropped call but I'm seeing that it might be the other carrier with the problem (maybe verizon does not play nice with the network from another carrier lol). And the GPS seems to be working better.I have to say when I got my first droid I loaded it with apps without a second thought and most of my problems could of been just that. Now I didn't install any apps and testing the phone with just the stock apps it came with. So far working great with little bugs and loving the phone. With update could get even better.
Those of your that are just about to get your X take your time and get to know your phone. As others have mentioned download the manual and read up on it. Know what it can do before you add anything to it that way you will have a baseline to compare it to after you load it up with your favorite apps. No phone is perfect, if you dont believe me just take a peek at the forums from users on phones from different carriers like Vibrant (tmobile), EVO (sprint) and so on. Take  the good and weigh it against the bad. if good is more, that your are a happy custumer with minor issues about the phone you can live with. If the bad out weighs the good than return your phone and go with another phone and maybe another carrier that will work for you. I was with tmobile and it was a nightmare since May until I went to Verizon mid August. So if you have good things to say about the X and Verizon please let me know because My 30 day trial is up beginning of October and I need to hear all that could be good with VZ. Oh and when I got my new phone they extended my  30 days, good service so far.

Its not all bad...... I have my issues with mine but I don't know if it is my phone, software or me just having higher expectations. But I love the camera, in a little over a month I have more pictures then all of my previous phones combined, I love listening to Pandora, and having FM radio, weather, and news at my fingertips, and the new found joy of being able to prove someone wrong in the midst of a bar argument in a matter of seconds..Priceless.   But I have my issues youtube/streaming video freezes, the wifi which I thought I could ignore is like a constant itch in a place you can't reach. I have found that the issues with freezing screens etc.... tend to come with crappy apps, or running to much at once, but Froyo will supposedly solve the screen issue.  I have had since day 1 a single stuck pixel but 98% of time I don't see it. The video camera works great but then you can't upload the video b/c of video size but if wifi worked that probably wouldn't be a problem...In any case this fabled release of Froyo should be any day now and I hope it will resolve the issues I am having if not I will see about getting a new phone.  I am past my 30 days so I am stuck with the droid now but if it is defective at the very least I can get a new one. It is by far the best phone I have ever had/used better than the iphones I have seen but not by much especially if these few things don't get fixed.  But enough of the bad, Google sky awesome, Google maps/navigation got me home from a concert when my gaps in the truck told us to go through a closed road and a flooded bridge lol, gmail works great and swype is a cool feature I hope I will eventually get good at.  facebook, is facebook but if its your thing then you'll like it. I have downloaded a bunch of tools, a flashlight that uses the flash and  I use frequently, a level, alarm, stopwatch, police scanner. Voice to text works sometimes but only short phrases and not all words.  FX camera is an awesome free camera app, it doesn't zoom but it does give some really cool effects .  I like the phone, but I am also frustrated by the phone fix my issues and I'd love the phone.
And just for a laugh when I spell checked this, words Verizon's spell check doesnt know :
    droid <----- yeah really
    swype
    froyo
    youtube
    facebook
    app
I dont know arent these fairly standard terms? just chuckled when I saw that : )

  • Can someone post what's GOOD about new interface

since I can't really use the TV any more (without sitting two feet from it wearing 2.0x reading glasses in a dark room), i have no idea what time IMPROVEMENTS are in the new guide. i get the whole dvr-sharing thing, and that does seem valuable, but I didn't need a new interface for the interactive guide to get a feature like that.
for the defenders and beta testers, what about the guide is actually improved? who knows, maybe i can learn to love it, too.

Release notes can be found here. I know since these came out there have been some added features, such as multihub and other items that were not mentioned in the initial notes because of marketing issues.
    http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-at-Home/FiOS-TV-Interactive-Media-Guide-1-9-Release-Notes/ba-p/...
Like any change. Some like it some don't. I would vote for smaller thumb nails on the left and a larger timeline of programming to the right. I do not need to see a giant picture that says ABC, CBS, or HBO, Just my thoughts. But there are improvements that are not mentioned in the link posted. If you have any of the older HD hardware, say 6xxx I would attempt to get it replaced. Now the SD QIP2500 boxes even started running slow when 1.8 rolled out.

  • What's so good about Final Cut Pro?

Hi everyone, I am totally new to Macs, switching over from the PC. And so far, I have to say that I honestly enjoy the Macs a lot more than the PC's. With that being said, my wife's friend was telling us that we should invest in Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The problem is we know nothing about the two programs other than photoshop is obviously working with photos and final Cut has something to do with movies.
So can someone please tell us whats so good about these two programs. And if we were to buy them, is there some sites that offer good tutorials to learn how to operate each of them?

A quick tour of Final Cut Pro can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
    and Final Cut Express here:

There are paid tutorials found at Lynda.com. And a smattering found ALL OVER THE PLACE...some on the Creative Cow:

But those are advanced ones for people already familiar with FCP. The ones on Lynda.com are for beginners through experts. And there are books:

  • What is so good about Oracle Database?

    Dear Sir,
The project that I'm working on is using Oracle database. Therefore, I don't have not much experience in other rdbms.
Sometime my customer ask, what is so good about oracle compare to others like ms sql server, sybase, informix, mysql and so on.
So, hope someone can give some distinctive strength about Oracle database. This is important for me as well as customer so that we can understand that why using Oracle database is the right choice.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

i use napster to discover new music. if i really like it, i track down the CD. 28k wma's or mp3s or whatever sound pretty bad. you're not right about them sounding like cassettes. i think you are forgetting just how bad cassettes sound. most 28k's i've heard sound better then cassettes, but paying $9.99 for 28k tracks....NO WAY. $3 for 28ks? sure the upside of 28ks over cassettes tho is the fact that you can transfer the files around from player to player and mp3s dont get stretched out in the sun :smileyvery-happy:

Being the audiophile I am (Not to mention a producer), what the heck is so good about the legal sites?
I mean, there is a nice selection, but 28 freakin' wma bitrate?! It's like paying $9.99 for a new cassette!
What the hell is up with this? Why buy crappy quality?
I'll agree that Npaster to go is good, but once again, you're paying for an unlimited supply of cassettes :-\Message Edited by Jason-CL on 08-02-2005 04: PM

  • My iphone has recently loss about 10G of memmory. I check through settings/general/usage, all apps I had add up to less than 2G. I used to be able to take around 2hrs of video and now I can't take any. Can anyone help? Thanks

My iphone has recently loss about 10G of memmory. I check through settings/general/usage, all apps I had add up to less than 2G. I used to be able to take around 2hrs of video as I like to record down whatever happening in front of my car when I'm driving. I delete the videos everyday ifn nothing special. It seems that lately when I deleted the videos, they're not removed from the phone's memmory.
I check form setting/general/usage : all my apps add up to less than 2G. In itune, it shows all memmary is under the catagory "other". Is there any way I can access this "other" memmory to see what's in it and delete the things I don't want to regain the loss memmory?
    Thanks

You could always try restoring, although maybe someone else on here has a better idea.
Hopefully by posting this, it will bump up and someone with more iPhone troubleshooting experience might chime in.
As for the videos - interesting! Do you have the iPhone on one of those window holders, or do you hold it in your hand since that might ironically distract you, unless you've gotten very good at it!

  • OK, what is it about G4 towers suddenly w/o power?

I got my dual Gigabit Ethernet G4 tower from work when they got rid of Macs about 4 years ago (keep hoping they'll change their minds). When I first got it I had the typical no power problem and a new battery solved the problem (but I had to order it from OWC, the one I got at a local store didn't work).
Right before Christmas we shuffled furniture around in the family room and unplugged the Mac. Now it's dead again. I've tried two different new batteries (one from OWC), I've done the simple reset and the sit for 30 min reset and the sit overnight reset and the take out all the ram and the cards reset. Still nothing.
Now, it appears I'm getting something from the power supply because when I had everything plugged in, the monitor was showing that it was getting power. Does that mean that it's more likely the motherboard than the power supply?
I know it's had a good long life, but I'm really sorry to see it go. I got a good deal on a core2 duo Mac Mini. I think the g4's likely dead; if the problem is the power supply, it's going to be a bear (and $$$) to replace, and although I see motherboards on eBay for a good price, I know I could get that in, struggle to figure out how to replace it, and the darn thing still might not work. Plus the motherboard I just purchased would also be like 8 years old.
So...what is it about G4 towers and suddenly not starting up? I see this problem frequently on the support boards. I love Apple (right now I'm stuck on a Vista laptop and...ugh), and I know that this tower had a long life, but doggone, why do they just suddenly drop dead without any warning?

If you have a meter, unplug the AC power plug from the wall and wait a minute, then measure the battery in the holder, working. If you do not see 3.2 Volts or higher, the battery, regardless of its history, is not working.
After fiddling with any Hardware, you should press the tiny reset button for a quarter minute \[with the Mac nominally off, but the AC power plug plugged in]. Then wait at least five seconds before proceeding. Avoid momentary presses, they can crash the microprocessor that controls the clocks and drain your battery in a day. If nothing seems to change, do the procedure again.
If you still have no response, disconnect the drives, remove everything except the processor and memory, do a reset, and try for a startup chime.
If no chime, use this diagram to look for Standby Power on pin 9 of the main DC power connector:

when I view the summary of content on my iphone5, the status bar at the bottom to the iTunes window shows I have 3.90 Gb's of "other".  What is that about and how can I free up that space?

I simply restored my iPhone from most recent  iCloud  backup.  Poof. Good to go!!!

  • What is unique about online streaming of pbs video that causes it to stop to load the buffer every 40 seconds

What is unique about PBS videos that results in the play stopping every 40 seconds to refill the buffer (ie the round circle appears)
I have no trouble viewing hulu movies or ytube videos.  Is there a way of correcting this problem ?
I have a ATT DSL with download  speed of 768kb.

Could be a number of things, but the most obvious guess would be that PBS has relatively narrow bandwidth. The people in Congress who think that Masterpiece Theater is intellectual sedition and Sesame Street is a communist plot to indoctrinate our children have been strangling PBS's cash flow since sometime the early '80s.
Unfortunately, the aesthete voting block doesn't have a particularly big political voice in the US (as though it has a big political voice anywhere).  We'll just have to continue trading our carefully hoarded recordings of 'good' television programs in secret.

  • Maintenance scripts, whats that all about?

In this case I do not actually have a problem, but have heard about on other forums recently something about scripts running in the middle of the night, assuming you leave your computer on that somehow magically keep your Mac working properly. I did a search on the apple forums for this but to no avail.
Anyone know what this is about? Does it actually work, and if so why?
From my perspective it seems like one could cause more problems by always leaving a pc on, due to power failures or surges etc.
Thanks in advance for some insight on this, or links where I could learn more.

Yes, the Keebler elves are busy late at night keeping the computer problem free!
There are three maintenance scripts that Unix runs on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule. The scripts are run automatically between 3 and 5 am provided the computer is turned on and not sleeping. The scripts perform certain general maintenance chores such as deleting old log and temporary files, rotating the logs, and updating the lookup database.
These maintenance activities prevent log files from growing to unwieldy size which also tends to keep the logs from becoming corrupted. This does help keep OS X running smoother, but they hardly keep OS X completely free of problems. Other efforts are needed:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior. DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. However, DW is not yet compatible with Intel Macs. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk 6 (Shareware)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. SuperDuper (Commercial)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
    7. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
    8. RsynchX 2.1 and PsyncX 2.2.1 (Freeware)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • What's difference  about rootcrs.pl and rootdeinstall.sh

    my english isn't good.
    I want know what's diffence about rootcrs.pl and rootdeinstall.sh .
    I have a Oracle 1g rac environment.on Virtual box.
    I want to learn re-create OCR .
I have no i dea which scripts can is right rootcrs.pl or rootdeinstall.sh & root.sh.
Please someone can help me ,Thansk.

    Hi,
rootcrs.pl is used to configure the clusterware stack on the local node with the help of crsconfig_params. If you cann rootcrs.pl -deinstall, it will deconfigure the clusterware on the local node, but not delete the software binaries.
rootdeinstall.sh will run rootcrs.pl and delete the binaries.
So if you only need to rerun root.sh (or deconfigure the cluster stack and reconfigure it with the same parameters), then run:
    $GI_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -deinstall -force
    and
$GI_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -deinstall -lastnode -force (on the last node).
    Then run
    $GI_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl
on one node after the other for reconfiguration (with the same parameters).
    Regards
    Sebastian

  • Battery, what is good?

My macbook has been turning off earlier than it used to, but not so much that it's a problem yet. I came on here and saw all the posts about batteries, and it made me realize I don't know what's good or bad. I got my macbook in july '07 and this is the information I just looked up:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3365
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1661
    Amperage (mA): 1574
    Voltage (mV): 12129
    Cycle Count: 576
I don't know what any of this means! (I'm clearly not tech-savvy) Am I in good shape? Or am I in trouble? Thanks guys

    i'd probably *double yikes* that!!!
i've had my trusty late 2006 MacBook since Feb. of 2007 and when i recently checked my battery via "coconut battery", it said something like:
    initial charge: 4255 mAh
full charge: 4432 mAh (yeah, it now has a higher higher full capacity!)
and cycle count was only 27.
(i use my laptop, pretty much everyday... and it's usually plugged in, unless i am calibrating it.)
go back afew posts and look for First Magnus' excellent reply re: battery optimization... or, wait... i'll see if i can find themj for you!
