What's In My TRASH???

Every time I start up my PowerBook, there is a "recovered files" folder waiting my trash, and every time, it is the SAME FILE!!!
"AOL temp.html"
Of course I delete it, but the next time i startup, there it is again!!! Can anyone tell me what this is and why it keeps popping up? And most importantly, how can I make it stop????
Thanks

I have read all of the threads dealing with this issue. I too suffer from the same problem. I understand the concept of moving temp files to the trash for trouble shooting and what not. Also, I suppose it is only a minor inconvenience. However, the question remains...where are the rest of my temp files? The only file I ever get in the Recovered Files folder in the trash is the AOLTemp.html. From what I've read, this file seems to be the one plaguing everyones trash. This file would not help me recover or troubleshoot anything in any way. If the OS was truly saving my temp files for me, I would expect to see a large number of files in the trash everytime I boot up. Any comments? Also, is there any place I can go to ask the Apple folks directly about this issue?

  • How can i see what is in my trash on my macbook air?

I  want to  see what is in my trash before I empty it, but I cant see anything when i click on the icon, it is like a screen is covering the contents.

It is a really BAD idea to move items from the Applications or Applications -> Utilities folders to your desktop or any other folder, and as John Galt says, it should have been in your Applications -> Utilities folder.
If you want a fast access to such an app, create an Alias and put that Alias anywhere you iike (Finder -> File -> Make Alias).  Make several aliases of the app if you want it in multiple location, just do not move the original.
When Apple standard programs and utilities are not in their expected locations several bad things can happen.
After an update/upgrade you might get a newer copy in the official location, but keep using the old version because you keep clicking on your desktop copy, and then wonder why it is not working correctly with the updated/upgraded Mac software.
Some functions may fail, if some other app that expects to be able to launch the standard app cannot find it in the standard location.
If it is an essentail utility you may be even brick your Mac, turning it into a door stop.
Pleaes uses Aliases and do not move things our of their Applications or Applications -> Utilities locations.

  • What happened to the trash option in the new iOS mail?

What happened to the trash option in the new iOS mail?

    Nothing at all.
It still works the same way for me as it always did. It might help if you specified which email provider you use - for instance I believe that Gmail has its own way of deleting/archiving emails so you need to be more specific than ..."what happened to the trash option in the new iOS mail".

  • How can I see what is in the Trash folder?

When I open the Trash folder, all I see is a gray bar with "Trash" on the left and a button marked "Empty" on the right.  I know I have items in the trash, but I can't see them.  It used to be when I opened the trash, I saw a list of all items in the trash.  What has changed??  Thanks.

Your trash bin may be damaged and it's deleting items as soon as you put them in.
Go to /Applications/Utilities/ folder and launch Terminal. At the prompt, copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window.
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
Press Return. You will be asked to enter your admin password. As you type, your password will not be returned, so be sure to enter it correctly. Press Return again. Log out and back in or restart.

  • What happened to my Trash?

    Hi,
I have what is probably an extremely trivial question but I did a google search and wasn't able to find a remedy. When I delete a file or choose to "Move to Trash," it prompts me: "The item "insert item name" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?" Now that's all well and good but let's say I'd like it to first go to the Trash, what needs to be changed for this to happen? Thanks so much for the help!
    Mike

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Sharing & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:
    sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
    chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.

  • What is this folder .trashes?

On my MAC, there are, just recently, a number of folders, all preceded with a ".", such as .trashes when I open Finder. Before I do anything like trying to delete these, I am just wondering what they are and where they came from. Can I clean all of these up?
I see these same kinds of "directories" on my USB flash drive all of the time when working between my MAC and my Windows laptop. However, I have a little utility program that runs and wipes all of those "directories" clean when the USB flash drive is inserted into the laptop, called USB Drive Fresher 1.0

These are hidden files. Any file with proceeded with a "." = hidden file. Do not delete these files.
Change the finder view back to default, using terminal. See the article below. Replace "True" with "False" in the given terminal command.

  • What happened to the trash in iMovie?

after moving events to trash, the trash can icon or option is not there and the trash can in iPhoto only contains what I deleted in iPhoto and Not iMovie.

Ive looked through countless forums on this and have NO IDEA how nobody's found it yet.  Apple claims that it no longer exists, and that everything goes directly to the trash in Finder, but thats not the case because I just recently found it on my own.  Go to Finder>Go>Home>Movies then right click "iMovie Library" then click "Show Package Contents."  Miraculously, there will be a "trash" folder with god knows how many hundreds/thousands of deleted clips.  Hope this helps.

  • What happened to the trash ?

Has anyone noticed that the option to open/empty the Trash has been removed in 8.01 ? I've searched the menus and the key commands looking for it. I've been trying to save some groove templates in a song template but they are emptied from the Trash when I save the song template. There was an option to disable this behavior in previous versions. Any insight would be appreciated.

    ResultsOriented,
I never noticed a sound before personally, so I tested it on my iPhone running 2.1 and found another iPhone running software version 1.1.4. I couldn't get either to make a sound when deleting trash. I know Mac OS X makes a sound when emptying trash; this is the only sound I am aware of.

  • What happens if I trash a post? I am a beginer.

I see that there is a Trash option for an existing post. When should I use it?

You should be able to edit the posting to fix whatever you trashed, if you are talking about this particular support forum. AFAIK, only the moderators have a Delete button for threads and postings and we use it very rarely, if at all. The "Lock" is used more frequently.

  • I can see my emails but I can't read them. I cannot see what's in my trash or drafts either

This is a firefox problem, how can it be fixed? I can read my emails with other search engines.

Which mail site do you use, for example, Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook?
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

  • DOWNLOADS FROM TRASH FOLDER

I have founbd a further problem somewhat related to my previous posting today.
My Windows live Mail is downloading the emails which BT has been moved to the trash folder.  Surely if they have been regarded as trash, it should not be possible for them to be downloaded.  I thought only the inbox was downloaded.
If this is not the case, how do I stop what BT regards as trash, from being downloaded.
    Thanks again,
    Geoff.

Have you checked your BT Mail settings? There are options to switch spam filtering on or off under "Spam settings for POP users".

  • I have 396 versions in the Aperture trash, but Aperture's deleting 784 versions?

I deleted a bunch of versions along with some masters.  The number by the Trash in the inspector indicated there were 396 versions in the trash.  I clicked "empty Aperture trash" and expected it to empty as usual, but it seemed to be taking an extra long time.  I had the "Activity Monitor" on at the time and, indeed, both the processor and RAM appeared to be maxed.  (I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, 15 inch, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM, running OSX 10.6.8).  I waited a while, but it didn't seem to improve.  Curious about what progress had been made, I clicked "Show Activity" in Aperture.  It showed a status of 10%,  soon thereafter, it said "deleting 2 of 784"!!!!!  Why would it be deleting nearly twice as many versions as are in the trash?  I have never had the "Show Activity" window open before when emptying the trash, so I don't know if this is normal or not, but it had me worried.  I wanted to cancel the process and find out if it was normal before continuing, but the "Cancel Task" button in the activity window was greyed out, and therefore, not an option.  I waited and waited, all the while worrying about what other versions it was planning on deleting.  It seemed to be at a stand-still.  There was no spinning beach ball, and I was able to use the cursor, but the Activity Window didn't show any more versions being deleted.  I know I'll get criticized for the next few things I did, as I'm sure I probably should not have done them:  I decided to try quitting Aperture, since I could find no other way to cancel the task.  The progress bar got about half way through and then seemed to stall.  Again, I waited and waited and waited.  Finally, I reluctantly clicked on "Aperture" in the "Activity Monitor" and then "Quit Process", to force quit the process.  I then put the computer to sleep for a while.  When I came back, I clicked "restart" to clear the RAM (Activity Monitor indicated about 5 MB of Page Outs--don't ask me what the other stats were, as I don't recall).  I opened Aperture to see what would happen.  It opened fine.  The only immediate noticeable problem is that while the trash still indicates 396 items are in it, no previews show in the window.  It is all grey.
    My questions are as follows:
    1) As asked above: Why would Aperture be deleting 784 versions when only 396 are in the trash?
    2) What is the next best step for me to take?  I am wanting to delete the 396 versions, but not unknow extras!  I can't see what's in the trash.
Thanks, in advance, for any insight.

Update:  I did an extended hardware test (just in case a hardware issue was causing my problem)--no problems found.  I then went through the Aperture troubleshooting steps: I tried repairing permissions first, but I still could not see any of the images that were in the Aperture trash.  I then repaired the library.  This seems to have fixed things (at least upon initial assessment).  Afterward, I was able to see the images that were in the trash.  I opened the Activity Window to see what it said when I tried emptying the trash again.  This time it said it was deleting exactly the number of images that I expected it to delete (not twice as many this time!), and it emptied lickety split--as I had expected it to do the first time!  So, hopefully, all is now well with my system and library.  Still wondering why it was telling me it was deleting twice as many images as were in the trash the last time I tried, but overall, much happier today!

  • Need help with Trash

    Hello everyone...
I know emptying the trash has been as issue for many since OSX began, and I have read as much as I can to try and solve this problem myself with no luck. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, details are:
I was reinstalling Illustrator CS2 and trashed the old copy. What remains in my trash from this deletion is a folder called "Legal" and within this folder is a file called Tieng Viet.html. There is some non-English punctuation and it has a Safari icon.
I've tried emptying the trash, option-emptying the trash, using terminal to rm the file, and using the app Force Empty Trash which I believe automates the terminal process. I've tried fixing permissions with no luck. get info claims I can read & write. Details says it is owned by system, and is locked. i unlock it and try to change the owner to Mike (me) and I get the error message code 213.
Force Empty Trash generates the message rm: /Users/Mike/.Trash/Legal/Tieng Viet.html: No such file or directory
    rm: /Users/Mike/.Trash/legal.localized: Directory not empty
I've also tried all of the above after rebooting, same results.
Any help is greatly appreciated, and be gentle, I'm a graphics guy not a tech of any kind. I basically only know enough to be dangerous.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Mike

That would have been my next suggestion!  Good for you.
