What's it called - Q about drop-down menus

Hi -
I'm trying to find out the name/technique for the situation
in which, for example, you use a drop-down menu to make a
selection, and the selection "configures" the selections in the
next drop-down menu.
For example, if you have two drop-down menus - "Shape" and
"Height" - and if you can choose Round or Square, and round comes
in 24", 48", or 56", and Square only comes in 24" or 48", and the
user chooses Square in the first drop-down, they will not see the
56" choice in the "Height" pulldown.
I realize there are probably a LOT of ways to do this, but
I'm looking for something relatively basic to start with.
Any help/suggestions appreciated!
thanks,
Andrew

  • Drop down menus in IE

    Ah crud, I have been putting together this site for the
    Archdiocese of Omaha (
    http://www.archomaha.com/archdioceseofomaha/),
    and they decided to go with some drop down menus, thus making my
    life easier (sarcasm). After looking online at many a sources to
    try to find out about drop down menus, I found that it be easiest
    to purchase already made drop downs from projectseven.com. I have
    the drop downs working pretty much how I want them to work in
    firefox, but in IE, I am having some difficulties. The About Us
    dropdown link is behind part of my shadow image and the page
    content goes ahead of my other drop down links. How do I get the
    drop downs in IE above the other content? If you have trouble
    seeing my css or anything, please let me know and I will post

  • Best practice for creating large drop down menus?

    I'm attempting to transition from using Photoshop to Fireworks cs4 for design and prototyping of websites.
    Right now I'm working on re-creating a nav bar design in FW. The design calls for large drop down menus with lots of non-standard content similar to nymag.com
    I've got each button setup as a 2 state button, however when the large drop down spans across to the right, the other buttons next to it appear to be over the first fly out. If I move that layer on top of the others, all the other buttons begin to act strangely. Any ideas?

    I have to agree with Pixlor and here's why:

  • Flash drop down menus in IE 6

    I have a simple flash drop down menu (under the blue shop now
    button) that works in all browsers except IE 6. In IE 6, the
    browser sees the drop down menu as an element that takes up a lot
    of vertical space (the length of the menu). Anyone know any tricks
    to get it to see it as a menu and float on top the other elements
    as it does in the other browsers?

  • Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?

    Drop down menus on iPad, the first selection in the drop down will not load as a selection when using safari, what can I do?  I use this for my mobile, on-site auto repair business and not being able to call up repair and diagnostic info and reference for some cars is troublesome for sure. It works fine on the computer and I have installed a remote desktop app as a workaround but it is unreliable because the desktop is not business dedicated and may be off or in use at the time. So is there a known fix for this?
    Let me paint a more descriptive picture, visualize 4 drop down selection menus, first one is for year, next one is for make, 3rd one is model and the last one is for engine size/type. If I wanted to choose a 2012 vehicle it wont work because it is the top selection on the list. This can be forced by selecting any other year and then coming back to 2012. Ok fine, but then let's say I wanted to choose Acura as the make, well it won't take it because again it's the top selection. Again you work around it be selecting any other make and coming back to Acura. Ok now select the model, same trend follows. But now since most Acura vehicles come with dedicated engines and no optional engines I have only 1 selection in that final drop down menu and it will not take my selection and therefore never let me proceed to the info I need.
    This is also true when ordering parts from my wholesaler's website, they use drop downs and I can only get to that last drop down and then I'm stuck. This is blindingly frustrating, what options do I have. I'm not opposed to any avenue at this point.

    Did you ever figure this out? I bought my iPad last week to use in my business as well. I assume you are trying to use alldata? That is where I noticed this same issue. I had problems with identifix working with safari but downloaded a different browser and that works fine. Alldata does not work with either browser. The main difference is that on identifix if there is only one engine selection, it automatically selects the only option and continues to the home page. With alldata you have to make the selection manually even if there is only one option. Honestly if I can't get this to work I am going to return the iPad as it looses a significant amount of usefulness to men

  • Anyone know anything about drop down listings?

    I would like to know if anyone here can give me any advise as
    to how I might go about getting my drop down menus to have to
    ability to compile a personalized list. I'm sure you are familiar
    with what I am referring to.
    I build custom computers and I want my web page to allow my
    customer to choose all of the parts they want through the use of
    drop down menus. then submit that information along with the added
    cost for a active tally or $ Total of the computer.
    Here is an example of what would like to do.
    http://www.digitalstormonline.com/customintelpro.asp
    Notice that when ever you select a new case for the PC it is
    displayed in the upper frame.
    How do you assign a page to be displayed in a frame when ever
    a drop down menu has been used?
    I have made the drop down menus and entered all my
    information.
    It all looks all right but I need to somehow pull it all
    together.
    Please help!

  • What's the best way of creating drop down menus on CS3?

    Hi people,
    I'm using CS3 now. I used to build drop down menus in
    fireworks, but now with CS3 theyre a bit glitchy and I have
    problems centering the page, as fireworks CS3 now generates CSS for
    each menu - (dreamweaver also gets confused which CSS to use?)
    Is SPRY menus the way to go now? It looks quite time
    consuming styling them with CSS? I quite like using rollover
    images, is this going to make life hard doing it the SPRY way?
    Any tips or advice would be appreciated before I start.
    Whats your experience of SPRY shall I go for that or stick to
    something more tradional?

    It's not really all that time consuming if you have an
    understanding of
    CSS... the stylesheet that is used for the Spry menus is
    fully commented
    (thought it could be better explained in some cases), but
    once you
    understand what each section does and how to make the style
    change it's not
    that difficult.
    Otherwise, go with the tutorial already posted.

  • Drop down menus keep flickering out, what's wrong?

    Whenever I click on the button on the Firefox toolbar and then start scrolling down, as soon as I want to go into a folder or press a button the drop down menu flickers out and then I have to go back to the toolbar and start again.
    Any future answerer please keep in mind that I am talking about the browser itself, not a web site.
    I have the latest version of Firefox for Mac and this only started happening a few days ago. Pleas help.

    I had this same issue. Dual screen, right side screen drop down menus flicker out, left side screen operates normally.
    Dell PC
    Windows 7
    Firefox 16 (just updated today)
    All Java applets up to date
    I dug around and found a resolution to this problem. It's been a problem since 5.0. I have 16.0 and it still is an issue. My drop down menus go wonky, flickering, and can't be seen or legible.
    The resolution I found had me fighting for the resolution because it lacked detailed steps so I'll post them here.
    1. Point to "start", ''click''.
    2. Point to "Search programs and files" box and type "run" in that box, HIT ENTER.
    3. With "Run" dialogue box open, type in "sysdm.cpl", CLICK "OK" button
    4. In the "System Properties" dialogue box, CLICK on the "Advanced" tab.
    5. Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Performance" section, CLICK on the "Settings..." button.
    6. Under this "Performance Options" dialogue box, under the "Visual Effects" tab, select the radio button next to "Adjust for best appearance". CLICK the "apply" button.
    7. Lastly, under these options is a box with visual options. CLICK on the check box to remove the check next to "Show shadows under windows". CLICK "apply" button again.
    This worked for me.

  • TS4123 Whenever I open the iTunes store, the home pages of all of the sections (Music, App Store, Films etc) are black. They still have clickable hyperlinks, but I can't see what I'm clicking. Any pages accessed through the drop-down menus or by randomly

    Whenever I open the iTunes store, the home pages of all of the sections (Music, App Store etc.) are BLACK.  They still have clickable hyperlinks, but I can't see what I'm clicking.  Any pagess accessed through the drop-down menus (even iHelp) or by randomly clicking I can't see.

    Thanks but it's just my desktop that doesn't see it though.  My notebook sees it everytime, even at the same exact time that my desktop doesn't see it.  For example yesterday when I was typing up this post, I was typing up the post on my notebook because my desktop didn't see the router.  I don't think it has anything to do with the router actually, but I wanted to see if anyone on here has encountered this issue before.  Other forums have similar issues but I've tried all of the fixes I found elsewhere and they didn't work.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Can't Scroll Inside Drop Down Menus

    I just got a new HP laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit), installed Firefox 11 (now updated to 12), and discovered that when using the track pad (Synaptics Touch Pad v8.1. Driver provided by Synaptics, version 15.3.29.0 dated 10/13/2011), I can not scroll inside drop down menus.
    To replicate, go to this link: http://sacramento.craigslist.org/sss/
    Click the drop down for the category to search. Use the track pad to scroll the list. Mine closes the list and returns focus to the browser instead of scrolling the list. It then scrolls the browser window instead. This works fine in IE. Things I have tried:
    Safe mode
    Unchecking smooth scrolling
    Unchecking autoscrolling
    Unchecking hardware acceleration
    And just about any of the various combinations of the above things. I also tried restarting Firefox each time I made a change. Nothing seems to solve this issue.
    Oddly enough, if there is a text window inside the page (like the on I am writing this in), I can scroll that just fine. Once I move my mouse out of the box, it scrolls the main page just fine. I don't think it's a matter of the focus following the mouse, it has something to do with scrolling drop down boxes specifically it seems.
    Also, I should note that all the pages I have problems with work fine in IE the way they SHOULD work in Firefox.

    It's Synaptics Touch Pad v8.1. It is using a driver provided by Synaptics, version 15.3.29.0 dated 10/13/2011, and is supposedly the most current version. I have tried getting newer off the HP website, letting Windows search for the most current version, and looking at the Synaptics site, but I still end up with the same version.
    I have double checked the scrolling regions to make sure I am within them as well as all the other settings regarding the touch pad. In fact, I had to enable the scrolling regions because they were disabled by default and instead used two finger scrolling. For what it's worth, two finger scrolling gives me the same result - it does not scroll the drop down menu.
    As I said, it works just fine in IE and all other programs, so I'm not sure I understand how the drivers for the touchpad could be the issue. It seems to me it's more likely that Firefox is not interpreting the "signal" from the touchpad correctly, yet IE does. Then again, I've been wrong before...

  • Drop down menus / search engine friendly

    Hi,
    I've been tasked with creating a new company website and having it go live April 10th. I would like to use iWeb to get it done.
    Are drop down menus possible with iWeb? To be clear, I'm talking about if you hover your cursor over a menu item; say products, a drop down menu will appear listing specific products and link to that products page.
    The other main requirement is that the site be search engine friendly. Our current website is in Flash and is virtually invisible to search engines.
    I hope that these questions haven't been answered by digging just a little further, it's just that I'm under a tight deadline and must get started.
    I've been a Mac user since 88 and I would like to work on my preferred platform. I've got a decent background in design. (I'd like to not use Dreamweaver under this deadline) Our current website is www.rapid.com. It was made from a flash template that I was told to use so I made the best of it.
    I'm going for a clean looking non fussy user experience, unlike what we have now.
    Thanks for any help you may have.

    As Massimo says, they are just fine in the basic sense.
    The adminition you are familiar with was related to *any*
    menu system that
    embedded your actual menu links within javascript
    'document.write' commands,
    just the way the DW pop-up menus prior to CS3 does, and the
    way the FW
    pop-up menus prior to FW8 did.
    If you can look at the HTML on the psge, and SEE the links in
    the HTML, then
    a search engine will also be able to see them, and therefore
    spider your
    site.
    BUT - if you have sub-menus, and I have javascript disabled,
    *I* will not be
    able to access those sub-menu links when I come to your site.
    Further,
    neither will anyone with a screen reader. That's a
    problem....

  • Double Drop-down Menus

    Suddenly, on my 17" MBP, the drop down menus have doubled the choices. What I mean is that when I click on the Apple on the upper left for example, instead of the menu showing "About this Mac", "Force Quit" etc., or when clicking on Safari instead of "Preferences", "Private Browsing", "Quit", etc. I see each of these choices twice! If I click on one, the chack mark appears on both.
    And on the screen, whenever anything pops up that gives me an opportunity to click it, a black box appears around the button I am supposed to click. The box stays there until I click somewhere else on the screen.
    I do not notice any performance issues, but wondering what the heck this could be about. I've rebooted, turn off & back on, etc., and that didn't change things.
    Thanks

    OK, the problem is most likely isolated to your main User Library then. It's probably a corrupt preference file. Read this for troubleshooting it.

  • Drop down menus and image loading

    Hi there,
    I have an idea on my site to display photos for consumers to purchase. What I have is 2 drop down menus, the first one has a list of the galleries, the second has a list of the photos. When you select a gallery a corresponding list of photos for that gallery appears in the second drop down menu. That part I've got under control. After that, the user is supposed to press a "Check Picture" button and the picture they have selected is supposed to come up in another small window so they can double check that they the photo they want is the one they are ordering. Firstly I wanted the photo to appear in an applet that I had at the top of the screen but that seemed WAY too difficult so I decided on just having it load up in a new window scaled down to just fit the pic.
    The code for the "Check Picture" button is this:
    <input type="button" name="Button1" value="Check Picture" onclick="WinOpen()">
    but I'm having trouble with the WinOpen() function.
    Because of the two drop down menus I've had to put this code in:
    var groups=document.doublecombo.example.options.length
    var group=new Array(groups)
    for (i=0; i<groups; i++)
    group=new Array()
    group[0][0]=new Option("-Select A Picture-")
    group[0][1]=new Option("")
    group[0][2]=new Option("")
    group[1][0]=new Option("Barrel Shed","photos/gallery1/barrelshed.jpg")
    group[1][1]=new Option("Cafe Jojo","photos/gallery1/cafejojo.jpg")
    group[1][2]=new Option("Close Up","../photos/gallery1/closeup.jpg")
    ...that I got from a tutorial (but of course I don't really understand it.)
    Is there a way that in the WinOpen function I can have something like...
    window.open("../photos/gallery1/"PicValue".jpg","DisplayImage","menubar=no");
    and then down with the options part I can include a value that corresponds to each picture.
    ...or am I going in the completely wrong direction and there is a much easier way that somebody knows of.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Peter

    Not too sure as this is a JavaScript question but I'll give it a shot.
    You should try to get the value (which appears to contain a URL) from the second drop-down form element. Not sure what it's called but if you look at the second select element it should have a name associated with it (I've assumed it's called example2).
    url = document.doublecombo.example2.value;
    window.open(url, "Display Image", "menubar=no");But as I said, I'm not sure.

  • Drop Down Menus Aren't Dropping Down!

    Hey and thanks in advance for any assistance!
    I had to update my drop down menus in DW CS4. I made the necessary changes, tested it on my computer and proceeded to update every template, then every page on the site.
    No problems as the menus worked fine on my computer, even after refreshing the pages.
    The problem lies that on every other computer in our office, the menus don't drop down, but extend horizontally across the page and off the screen now.
    My computer - drop downs.
    Other computers - horizontal mess.
    Here is our site!
    Suggestions?
    This was my first revision of the menus since I upgraded to CS4 (which I find more difficult). The code view on my index page had about 9 lines of space between each menu line, so I took that out. Could that have caused a problem?
    On a different note, in my viewing pane - my "page window" extends behind my folder view and I can't scroll up or down without minimizing the folders. Also the properties view used to fit nicely below the page window and beside the folders window, but now it extends behind the folders panel and I can't seem to fix this.
    And don't get me started on why DW would eliminate the ability to change colors without having to make styles! I still haven't figured out how to do that yet.
    Any assistance would be appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Okay, I've tried that and it didn't work. But even better, DW CS4 kept locking up (giving me the 'white screen of death') and closing down. When I tried to open DW again, it went through the motions and "disappeared" - would not finish the process.
    So I rebooted and tried again. Same thing. I reinstalled DW CS4 and it appeared to install fine. I opened it up, the screen came up, it loaded the cache, scanned my 2600+ folders and pages . . . and disappeared.
    Bottom line I can't access Dreamweaver. It's always locked up on me (a couple of times a day), but it's never been this buggy. I don't know if it's a compatibility issue with Win 7 or what. I'm seriously thinking of going back to MX as I dislike CS4 so much right now.
    As I said before, I never-never-never had these problems before I upgraded to CS4. Right now my feelings for DW are not in a good place!
    Thanks for trying anyway. If you have any suggestions, I'm more than open to them!
