What's NORMAL MBP Temperature?

What's the normal temperature for a MBP? 60C is pretty hot for doing VERY basic things like surfing and email.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and it runs at about 60-65 C when doing nothing, and ramps up to 80-85 C under load. I called Apple tech support today and while the guy on the phone at first thought the computer was hot, he went on hold to come back and tell me that they won't fix it unless it starts turning itself off because of the heat. He also told me that you can go into an Apple Store to compare it side by side with another notebook of your model to see if yours actually has an issue.
That said, I don't believe that 60-85 C is an acceptable temperature range, considering that most of the overheating problem is probly caused by the fact that my fans rarely if ever turn on in direct relation to increasing temperature, but I need a computer for the summer so I can't bring it into an Apple Store until August.

  • What are normal operating temperatures of the i7-2620 in the X220, using TPFanControl?

So I finally got TPFanControl working on my X220 after I really started noticing the fan spinning up and producing high-pitched whine. The fan had begun to remain on all the time, even while on battery with the CPU sitting at 800MHz. I could have sworn the fan remained off a lot of the time beforehand.
So, what are the normal operating temps of the i7-2620CPU? Right now plugged in at "Balanced" speed, jumping between 2.7GHz and 800MHz and with the fan manually set to "7," 4500rpm, in TPFanControl, it shows the temperature at 63C. On battery at 800MHz, the temp goes between 50C and 60C.
CPU Utilization remains at 7% when on batteries, 0-4% while plugged in at idle.
Are those normal numbers? If not, do I have some kind of problem with the thermal paste or heatsink, or dust?

at idle? no my fan is hardly audible at idle.
what you are describing sounds like a problem with the either fan, or improper installation, in which cases you would need warranty.
If you boot the laptop into the bios menu, does the fan come on?

  • What's normal range temperature and fan speed for a 27" iMac?

    I have a new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GBs ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB.
Smc fan control reads up to about 131°F and around 1200rpm fan. Is this within normal range? At what point should I be worried?
    Thanks

1200 rpm is the minimum fan speed according to iStat Menus and other sources. If your fans are at the minimum that means your system is not concerned about the temperature. On my system currently the fans are at minimum (1199rpm) and the temperature is 104°F. The room ambient temperature is 74°F. Your system looks normal to me. By the way, my system is also a 27-inch late 2013 iMac with the 3.5ghz I7 CPU. The Haswell CPUs are very efficient and low power.

  • Normal CPU temperature range

I'm curious if anyone knows what the normal CPU temperature range is for a Macbook? I just installed istatpro so I can now check it. The current CPU temp is 140F and the fan is at 1,500 rpm. At what temp does the fan kick into a higher speed?
    Thanks for the help.

The normal range is about 30º-85ºC depending upon CPU and GPU loads. Maximum is 125ºC at which point thermal shutdown occurs (your machine will shut down.) The fans change speed with temperature according to a hard-coded table (not firmware encoded.) The older Core Duo laptops such as yours have a lower fan idle speed than the newer models. Although not supported by Apple you can install third-party software that can be used to increase the fan's idle speed - Fan Control or SMC FanControl. Use at your own risk. The subsequent laptop models now use an idle speed around 2,000 RPM which tends to keep the machines a little cooler. However, this has no effect on when the fan will ramp up to higher revs. The software only raises the idle speed.

  • What is a normal operating temperature for a 15" MBP 2.33 duel?

i know this has been beaten to death, but i never can find what is considered to be a "normal operating temperature" for the MBP.
mac book pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

An MBP C2D should operate from 50ºC through to about 85ºC. I find mine averages in the low 50's however I don't do a lot on it. Anything that really requires processing gets done on my Mac Pro. It really comes down to how hard, or not, you push the processors.
Comparitively I find that it generally runs cooler than the PowerBook G4 1.25GHz it replaced however it does get hotter under maximum load. It just comes down to what you do with your MBP. You've basically asked "how long is a piece of string".

  • MBP normal operating temperature

What is considered the normal operating temperature" My MBP runs between 110 and 120 F.
    MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

If you have the Seagate 7200 RPM HDD there is a single temperature sensor that works with the standard temperature reading utilities. So, he is likely reading the temperature of the HDD.

  • Mother Temperatures - what is 'normal' and where is the temp taken?

Just wondering what a 'normal' use temp would be for a K8N Neo4 Platnium SLI mobo? I am running everest and it shows me the mobo temp was up at 41C. Too hot? Now, when I run the two 120mm fans that I istalled on the side the mobo temps go down to 34C. Ambient temp is 24C right now.
    41C safe?
Also, where does it monitor this temperature?
    Thanks,
    Mike

It is the CPU temp, right? If so, 41 is in the normal range. Sure, you could also take some measures to low down the temp, which is more better. From your description, you have succeeded to do this. Good job!
There should be a temp sensor located under CPU base, which could know detect current temp signal. The signal was then be amplified, A/D transfer. After that the data would send to BIOS chip. Finally, the BIOS could show the CPU temp on the screen.

  • Powermac G5: What are normal temperatures?

I recently started paying attention to the temp readouts using a temp monitor. Now im not sure what the normal temps are for my processors, but 180.00F seemed really high. I am running dual 2.7's.
Can anyone tell me what the normal range of temperatures are for a G5 with similar specs? Im not sure if i should be concearned or not..

Thanks so much for any assistance.

    Hello all,
I'm using a G5 2,5GHz DP and I recognized also that the CPU temperature was quite high. Also I found the noise of the fans quite annoying. They were spinning up i.e. when opening FileMaker databases over a network or when I was starting an iChat video conference and so on.
Then I found out the following procedure to reduce the temperature of the CPUs and also the noise of the fans:
First download CHUD from the Apple Developer pages and install it.
    http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/
After successful installation you'll find a preference pane called "Processor" in the "System Preferences". Open this Preference Panel and activate the option "Allow NAP".
Then please open the Preference Panel "Energy Saver" and there click onto "Options" at the top of the window. Then you'll see a preference for the CPU performance which you should set to "Minimal".
I know that this will cost performance, but if I do really need best CPU performance I can set it to "Maximum". All the time when I just use my G5 for normal office work, it is much more quiet than before. Of course this is not a solution for server or XGrid environments, but it is perfect for offices.
The average CPU temperature of the upper CPU (A) has been reduced from 75° C to around 60° C. The average temperature of the lower CPU (B) went down from around 65° C to 50° C.
    Hope this helps.

  • "Normal" Operating Temperature

What is considered the "Normal" operating temperature for the Apple TV? All I have found online from Apple is:
Your Apple TV is designed to operate quietly in an environment warmer than room temperature, including within media cabinets.
This can be rather ambiguous as warm to one could be hot to another. I've had my Apple TV for barely over 3 years and do not use it that much. Recently, I've noticed it running very hot to the touch (it always has run 'hot' to me, but not quite this hot.) If I start it up at room temperature after it has been unplugged for awhile, it runs fine for about 20 minutes. Then I start to see blue dots across the TV screen and then shortly after that, the picture becomes very pixelated. Feeling the case then at that time, it is quite hot to touch.
How can you tell what temperature it is running at? Should it not be running that hot? What have been the experience of other users?
    thanks,
    Jon

    Hi there,
I've been having the exact same problem with my ATV. Had it for about 3-4 years, and not used it a huge amount until recently - although it has been plugged in most of the time, so the HDD and fan have been running.
I've always thought the ATV ran hot, but recently I've noticed it getting MUCH hotter than usual. I've also noticed an increasing problem with flashing pixels on screen, corrupt menus, flashing and in the worst cases completely corrupt video playback (inverted colours, blocking, etc.)
I've been doing a bit of experimentaion to isolate the problem, and I'm fairly sure this is heat releated. The problems seem to get worse the longer the device is left on. If I cut the power and let it cool down for 5 mins, then everything seems fine for about 30-60 mins, then the symptons return.
I've had final proof tonight: I couldn't get the ATV to play anything for more than about 5 mins before we had problems. In a last ditch attempt, I got an icepack from the freezer, encased the ATV and turned the fan on to draw air over it ... the result? Problems gone.
I'm going to open it up an evening this week, and see whether the fan is running. If not, I'll investigate further. I guess I could always relocate my ATV to the freezer :o)
In my opinion, Jon - your ATV seems to be having the exact same problem as mine. I think there's a strong possibility the fan has either failed after all these years, or the fan connector has worked loose.
I'll let you all know what I find.
    Oli.

  • Normal CPU Temperature (P4 530 3GHz LGA775)

What's the normal CPU Temperature with 915 Motherboard and P4 530 3GHz LGA775 Processor?  My CPU temp is about  51 C.........is that too high?    Thank you.

I had a 50C temp using a stock Intel heatsink.  I've since upgraded to a Thermaltake TR2-M13 heatsink AND applied Arctic Silver Thermal compound yielding a stable CPU temp reading of 47C and Case Temp of 33C .  Thanks

  • Normal CPU Temperature?  Very Hot here...

My normal CPU temperature, according a widget I have installed on my Dashboard is around 150-160 degree F (with spikes up to 177 F). My fan is constantly whining and turning on and off even when I just have Safari open.
I tried using apple's new "chat" feature, and the chat support agent only ended up suggesting that I call in and possibly schedule an on-site visit.
What is your normal temperature? I'd like to have some basis for comparing, and also, what software do you use to measure the temperature?

Its hard to determine a normal temp for the cpu. It appears that the baseline is:
    cpu 140F fan 1500rpm
    HD 120-130F fan 2000rpm
    Syst fan 1500 rpm
Once the cpu starts to do a little work it throws off a lot of heat (Apple's nemesis) and the variable speed fans start to wind up. At some cpu temp, and I don't know what that is, the machine shuts down and at that point the fans are working their cans off and getting nowhere. Apples solution to this problem, is Intel. In the mean time they will placate you and look at your machine but they not going to spend a lot of time or money on a fix now. They got the look they wanted, and I love it, but the trade off is a little fan noise that we are going to have to live with.

  • What are the maximum temperatures for my MacBook Pro?

I have this MacBook Pro (3,1). I know there are maximum temperatures at which the system will shut itself down in order to prevent damage. I know this because I have seen it happen a couple of times
When I run Windows, apparently the OS doesn't care to throttle power in order to reduce dangerous heat like Mac OS X does. I now have a program that monitors CPU and GPU heat when I run Windows 7, and it will sound an alarm if they reach a pre-set ceiling.
My question is, how do I know what the emergency shutdown temperature is so I can set the alarm limit appropriately (low enough to trigger before catastrophe, but high enough that it doesn't trigger when things are still okay)?
This page from Intel seems to be telling me that the CPU should not go above 100°C ...does that seem like the number I'm looking for?
Nvidia doesn't seem to say anything about temperatures on the product page. User forums seem only to speculate on what is or isn't safe with no real specifications to back them up.
How can I find these numbers, either from Intel & Nvidia, or from Apple? Or, is there a general ceiling that I can go by to make sure my alarm warns me before an emergency shutdown?

  • Library size:  what's "normal"?

I have around 13,000 images equaling 140 GB. When I first built a library, with normal rendered previews, the library was close to 19 GB.
I then rebuilt the library, I believe without previews, and it reduced its size to under 2 GB. Now, my libary has swelled to around 8 GB, even if I delete the 1:1 previews.
What is "normal" or reasonable when working with LR? How can I keep a balance between speed and reasonable library size? Is a new hard drive looming in my future?
I would appreciate guidance, clarity, and recommendations!
    Thanks!
    Reid

Hello, Reid. I recall your posting on this some time ago, and since then I concluded for the mix of images I put in, the library plus previews will equal somewhere between 8 and 12% of the overall. Recognizing milegae, of course, but it doesn't seem like you are out of line.

  • What is the mbps speed of AirPort Extreme?

What is the MBPS speed of the AirPort Extreme 5th Generation?

    Ethernet....1,000 Mbps
    Wireless....up to 450 Mbps
But, your Internet connection will be no faster than what your service plan provides to you....probably something in the 10 to 20 Mbps range more or less.

  • What are normal business hours for support?

What are normal business hours for Apple Support in the Hong Kong region?
    The support page at:
    http://www.apple.com/hk/en/support/iphone/contact/
and the phone number, when called, do not specify normal business hours.  In fact, the phone number, when called, only says "call back during normal business hours".
Please... are they open on Sunday, Saturday, 8pm, 7pm, ????????

Really kb1951, I did try calling on Saturday, about 6pm.  They were closed.  But that does not answer my question.  And "normal" support lines do address their hours in the recording.
Additionally, if you call at 4pm, even, how does that tell you when they open???  Should I call at 7am, 8am, 9am, 10am, just to get my answer?
You trying to answer my question based on what other businesses do is really a waste of your and my time.  As you're just "guessing".  I can guess.  I don't need you for that!
I came to the support community for a reason - to get an answer, not a guess.
