What's really working in 802.11n ?

I have the new Airport Extreme Base Station and a MacBook Pro (Core Duo) with the right card in it - acc. to Apple both capable of the 802.11n protocol. And?
None of the "pure" 802.11n settings on Airport let my computer connect with the base station. It has to be left on the "802.11n (802b/g compatible)" setting.
This leaves out the menu selectable "802.11n only (2,4GHz)" and the "802.11n only (5GHz)" options.
This is such a shame because I would have preferred especially the 5GHz options combined with "...n" because the band is less common and suffers less snooping and interference. But my main question is then: do the "Extreme" devices actually deliver 802.11n? How would I know? Traffic seems no worse through my (now disconnected) old AirPort ExPress.

Hello Osmund Iversen. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

If you MacBook Pro has a Core Duo processor, than according to Apple, it is NOT upgradeable to 802.11n. Only MacBook Pros with Core 2 Duo processors qualify.

  • How can I get my AE to work in 802.11n mode with my dlink router?

    Hi all,
I have a dlink 655 wireless n router that I use for my network and a recent AE with 802.11n capability that I use to connect iTunes to my home stereo.
I have a mix of computers at home and only my imac has 802.11n capability. I work alone in the day so to speed things up, I change the wireless setting on my dlink router to 802.11n only mode. Normally, it is in a mixed mode of 802.11g/n for the other non n computers on the network.
My imac connects fine when in 802.11n only mode but the AE looses connection. As it is 802.11n capable, I was wondering why this happens?
I tried checking Airport Utility for a 802.11n only mode or something similar, but didn't find anything. Will the AE only work in 802.11n mode when on the 5ghz frequency? if so, that would explain why it doesn't connect with the dlink 2.4ghz router in n mode.
    Any ideas?? Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for the reply. It turns out that the router was not going into n mode because of the security I set on it. I finally figured this out and the AE did connect in n mode after all.
Well at least it's working now but I feel a little bad for posting when it was my fault!!
    Cheers!

Resetting the DNS cache does not seem to work on OS X 10.8, what does really work?
Desired activity: access a site that used to not have a SSL connection through the new https:// root domain. I can accomplish the task over a machine running Windows 7 or XP but flushing the dns of my mac does not affect the outcome — I am still redirected to the hosting provider's website whenever I tried to access the domain with a https:// prefix rather than http://
I tried sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder and it's older alternative but no luck.

    In the terminal:
    dscacheutil -flushcache
and to get a very detailed report on the state of your DNS cache in /var/logs/system.log:
    sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder

  • How can I make by MB Pro work on 802.11n wireless?

A month ago we bought a new MacBook and in conjunction with that purchase we upgraded from a Linksys 802.11g to the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Wireless Base Station. We wanted to have the 802.11n access for the new MacBook and for our other laptop (mine) - a MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo 15" purchased in March 2006.
I just figured there would be some downloadable upgrade to take my MacBook Pro from 802.11g to 802.11n ... but that does not appear to be the case. (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
So - the question: What do i need to do to get my MacBook Pro to work fully on the 802.11n standard? Do I need something new physically installed in the laptop? Is there a downloadable upgrade or something on the CD that came with the Airport Extreme unit that I can install? Help!
I really hope I didn't buy a $200 router that I can never fully utilize - there has to be some way to upgrade from a/b/g to a/b/g/n, right?
Thanks to any and all who can provide guidance on this.
MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   puchased in March 2006

Thanks for the tip on the upgrade. I upgraded to Airport Utility 5.1 (I had 5.0) and then did the firmware upgrade at the link you provided. So, all is installed, and I restarted the MB Pro, but my Network Utility still shows that I have only 802.11 a/b/g capability.
Do I need to take other steps? Do I need to anything like turn my cable modem or Airport Extreme unit on or off or something like that?
I am really frustrated and confused on this. Is it possible that my MB Pro that is all of 15 months old can't upgrade to 802.11n? I know that the new Inel Core 2 Duo MB Pros have the 802.11n built in. My MB Pro is the older Intel Core Duo (not "Core 2 Duo").
    Anyone else have ideas? Thanks!

  • First time working with 802.11n, not working properly?

    Hello,
This is the first time I use 802.11n in my network there is only one AP1141 but the clients don't connect at 802.11n rates, instead they connect at data rates as low as 11 Mbps. At the begining they connect at 144 Mbps but immidiatly it decreases to 11 or 12.
Many of our wireless clients in the company are Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN.
    Any comments?

Let me know if more info needed?
    Thanks

    Hi George,
So you suggest to keep only WPA2/AES?
Regarding the coverage area keep in mind this is a really small 4 floor building with an AP floor floor, I installed only one AP1141 in my floor and kept the AP1131 in the other 3 floors, I might reduce the power to half since I don't need them working at full power unless I need coverage in the stairs in order to enforce roaming to IPPhones. Also, I don't want to bond channels on 2.4 because I read that as a recomendation in a Cisco's document (anyways I did not find how to do it in 2.4, wuld be a nice tip if you tell me how just in case) so 144 Mbps would be great as long as it works properly. I did not experienced these rate hoping until I enabled this AP1141.
And yes most of the clients that reported issues are Intel (engineering team, haven't checked the rest yet).
    Regards!

  • PC laptop card to work with 802.11n?

I'm thinking of getting the new Extreme for my wife's Late 2006 Macbook Pro, but her sister is often on the same network with her PC laptop, an Acer Aspire 5100-5022 on which the current card is only g/b. Anyone know @ how much for an upgraded card for that, and any specific recommendations?
    Thanks

I will give it a try for a second time with the installation method they suggest at Amazon. It works ok with Airport but it has a lot of issues with speed. I was with a technician at Linksys and after going through all my settings, they asked me to try with another computer. I am in the process to buy a new laptop and try it there to see where the problem lies. (he he he)
I will post an update when I try the new installation.
By the way the older adapters 802.11N can reach the 300 Mbps if the router is set in the 5Gzh/40Mhz radio band.
Many thanks for your comment and the link.

  • Will older macs ever work with 802.11n

Just wondering if the requirements for 11n is just a matter of buying a new network card or does the hardware also have to support it as well. I ask only because I have a G4 & G5 on my existing airport network. Have a MacBook Pro also on network. I would like all of them to be at the same speed if possible.

retouch4food, Welcome to the discussion area!
As you undoubtedly know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, we are all Mac users like yourself. Therefore we have no special knowledge of future Apple plans or products. Also the discussion of future plans and products is forbidden in this discussion area.
But... based on past history... it is very doubtful that you will see any type of 802.11n upgrade for existing non-802.11n Macs. 802.11n depends on multiple antennas to perform it's magic and it would be very difficult to change built-in antennas in the existing Macs.
With all that said... if you want to give your non-802.11n capable Mac 802.11n access, the best solution will probably be an Ethernet 802.11n adapter.

  • Power PC G5... Will it work with 802.11n?

    I have a 20" iMac, 2.1 GHz Power PC G5, running OS 10.4.11.
Can I connect with wifi on the "n" side of the extreme base station with this computer? I currently have the 802.11g side with the older extreme base station. But I'm thinking about getting the new extreme base station and would like my imac to connect on the "n" side if possible via wifi.
Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks

  • Airport Express, WPS, 802.11n and 7.5.2 firmware - can this work?!

Can't believe this hasn't happened to anyone else, but I can't find a relevant thread.
I have a Time Capsule and an Airport Express base station. The Time Capsule was configured as a WDS base station, and the Express as a WDS Relay. The Express is less than a year old, ie 802.11n.
Everything worked beautifully until firmware upgrade 7.5.2 which self-installed on the Time Capsule just as you would expect - except the relay stopped working.
I've tried everything I can imagine, but I can't get the two devices to communicate with each other any more (even with the new firmware on the Express). I have read somewhere on the Apple site that WDS "doesn't work" with 802.11n, but this doesn't fully explain how it did work with 802.11n up until the time of the firmware upgrade to put it mildly. And releasing a firmware "upgrade" that stops existing configurations working, without warning, is not really an Apple thing to do.
One thing I haven't tried is to revert to older firmware; do I really have to do that? Or is there something wrong here please, Apple? Or did I just imagine, for those 9 months, that the relay was working sweetly?!
Don't know if this is related, but Airport Utility almost consistently fails to see both devices if they are both switched on, but can only see one or the other. Is it possible that the Express has developed a fault?
Please help; I have an old house and I can't penetrate most of it without my WDS!!

    Might this apply?

Both upgrades are making my devices to operate as 802.11g instead 802.11n, at my home wifi connections.
The devices which I haven't updated are still working as 802.11n.
This could be another issue in the new upgrades. I hope that a possible iOS6.0.1 fix that up!

  • 4965AGN / Linksys WRT600N - No 802.11n ***Resolved***

    *******************  Problem Resolved **************************
Given the response from others that they have been able to get the 802.11n working on the WRT600N, I reset the router and started again.  I am now able to connect at 270Mbps using 5.0 GHz and at 130Mbps at 2.4 GHz.  I am having problems getting the WRT600N to save setting changes (even though the web ui shows the setting, the router does not apply them) and that may have been the problem with the "n" support.  I use this router only as an Access Point, so all NAT, Routing DHCP and Firewall support is disabled and there is no connection to the WAN interface.  Even though I disabled the DHCP Server setting and removed power multiple times, it took a factory reset and re-configuration to actually get the router to disable the DHCP Server.  Perhaps this behavior is what caused to "n" support to show it was enabled, but not to work.  Who knows...  I do like being able to have both frequency channels available from a single WAP.
I purchased the Linksys WRT600N wireless router this weekend.  I am unable to get the 4965AGN card to connect to the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz  modes at 802.11n.  The fastest speed I achieved was 54Mbps at both 5 (802.11a) and 2.4 (802.11g).  WPA-2 / AES was being used on both.  I went out and bought the D-Link DGL-4500 tonight and I was able to connect using 802.11n with no problems.
The problem is a compatibility issue between the 4965AGN and the WRT600N.
Has anybody been able to get the WRT600N working at 802.11n?  I notice the Lenovo drivers are much older than the drivers on the Intel site, but I do not know if it is the WRT600N that is at fault.  I would like to keep the WRT600N since it transits at both 2.4 and 5.0.  The D-Link only supports a single frequency (5.0 or 2.4).
Experience from anybody else with this combination would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Brian

  • Macbook refuses to use 802.11n?

I have an 802.11n router, running in MIMO mode with WPA2/AES encryption, with only two machines attempting to connect to it. Both are running OSX 10.6.5:
My macbook air 1.6GHz (December 2010). This machine connects perfectly as 802.11n, every time.
My wife's 2GHz Macbook 2,1 (I think somewhere around mid-2007 manufacture). This machine has the n extension installed (I can't recall installing it, but network utility shows it as 802.11 a/b/g/n). Whenever I attempt to connect with this machine, connection initially fails, but it eventually connects as an 802.11g connection (as shown by option-clicking on the network icon). When it does connect - not very well - it slows the connection of the macbook air way down.
I'm guessing that if I could force my wife's machine to connect in n mode, everything would be OK. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    What I've tried so far:
.deleting and re-enabling the wireless drivers in the network preferences panel
    .making a new network location
    .deleting all relevant plists
    .repairing disk permissions
    Relevant background information:
.the 'n' router only supports channels 1-12 (i.e. we can't force n by using non-g channels)
.this network is in a crowded apartment block - I can see around a dozen other networks in istumbler
.the router is using directional paired (MIMO) antennas to bounce the signal from one apartment to another off an adjoining building. Of course, this could in general be problematic; but the received signal strength is OK - not good - according to both istumbler and a separate linux metering program. And the MBA works perfectly well in the same locations.
.it's using channel 1; there are two g networks in the building also using channel 1, but according to istumbler, our signal is strongest of the three in the 'receiving' apartment (in channels 6 and 11, there are other stronger signals, so 1 is the only rational choice).
.the router is running in mixed, not greenfields, mode
.although the MB is only able to connect in g mode, istumbler on the MB still shows it as an 'n' network
.we have never encountered any previous wifi problems with the MB (but this is the first time we've tried to connect it to an n router)
.and just to repeat, the router is using WPA2/AES encryption, which should be compatible with 802.11n
    TIA for any help

    SOLVED!
Who in the world would have guessed??
    Trendnet support provided this information:
<<Note: Due to chipset compatibility issues, if you choose WEP, WPA or WPA2-TKIP encryption this device may operate in Legacy Wireless mode (802.11b/g). You may not get 802.11n performance as these forms of encryption are not supported by the 802.11n specification. >>
I had used WPS2-TKIP, just by accident. I changed it to Authentication WPA-Auto and Cypher type auto, and now it works on 802.11n, as well as g!! Even on my Powerbook G3 and HP laptop.
    Who would have guessed?

  • Aironet 1252 / 802.11n / Outdoor Use over 2.7 km (1.7 miles)

    Hi There,
We are planning to use two Aironet's 1252 over an 2.7 km point to point link.
One of the options we have it to install three HyperLink Parabolig Grid 5.8 MHz 27 dBi antennas in parallel for every 1252.
I have some concerns because those antennas are not supported by Cisco. In fact, the most gain of Cisco supported antennas is 10 dBi Yagui for 2.4 GHz and 6 dB Omni for 5.8 GHz.
The question is if the 3x 27 dBi antenna array on each side will work without self interferences and what would be the required separation of antennas to get 300 Mbps over the link.
Has anyone tried something like this with the 1252's?
Thanks in advance for any information.
    BR,
    Igor Sotelo.

    Hi Steve,
I have seen the Q&A section for the Aironet 1250:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5678/ps6973/ps8382/prod_qas0900aecd806b7c82_ps6973_Products_Q_and_A_Item.html
states that both root and non-root bridge modes are supported.
About that, may I ask if that means that the bridging can work over 802.11n, but is not supported for regulatory reasons. Or the bridging basically only functions in 802.11 a and g modes.
    Thanks for the information.

    Igor Sotelo.

  • 802.11n for my Macbook Mac OS X 10.4.9

    Hi
I have a Macbook with 10.4.9 in it. I am not sure if I will be able to use the 802.11n network. Is there any software upgrade available to get my Macbook to work with 802.11n?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mothilal

The other 2 posters responded to your question as if you were wanting to join the "N" network as an "N" capable computer. Reading your post, you don't really state that you want to join as an "N" capable computer, just that you want to use the "N" network. You don't say whether the router is an Airport Extreme or not, but the fact remains that most "N" routers are backward compatible with the "B" and "G" and even "A" standards. You don't have to have the update software to join as any of those standards, but MacBooks come with the capability of either A,B and G or A,B,G and N depending on whether you have a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. The other posters are correct if you are wanting to join the "N" as "N" capable.

  • T42 Windows XP--BSOD When Near 802.11n

My PC crashes with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOC--IRQ problem) whenever it is in proximity of a 802.11n Wifi hotspot.
The crashes occur somewhat at random, but rarely can a boot-up go more than 15 minutes without the BSOD.
Sometimes the BSOD will happen during the start-up process.
What is the fix for this?
I know from surfing the Web that this also happens with Dell and some other brands, but I haven't found a good fix for my PC yet.

Hi Binky.  Thanks for your reply.  I don't have a direct answer to your question about the error message right now as I have been forced to temporarily revert to XP because of this problem.  I can try to reproduce the error message this weekend (in fact I can produce a low-level log with ThinkVantage AccessConnections) when I have a chance to switch OS images.  I do feel pretty confident at this point that I'm not dealing with an issue in the high-level user config parameters.
I also have some additional information to add to my initial post:
    1.  Earlier, I said that everything was working except 802.11n association.  I now know that 802.11n does work, but only using 2.4GHz, so 802.11a/b/g work and [email protected] works, but 802.11n@5GHz does not.  When using "mixed mode" on the 5GHz radio, I can connect only with 802.11a.... so with the identical client-side authentication credentials on the single 5GHz access-point config, Vista can access 802.11a, but not 802.11n.
    2.  All attempts were made with no third-party firewall or virus scanning software installed and with the Windows Firewall turned off completely.  The Vista installation is a fresh one with all critical and recommended updates installed.
    3.  I don't recall whether I already mentioned this, but I made sure to use visible SSIDs since I've seen problems in the past using wpa_supplicant under Gentoo, Ubuntu, and XP when SSIDs were hidden.
Thanks again, and I'll try to provide more information when I can.
