What's so good about an iPod?

I have never held either a 2nd gen Nano nor 5th gen iPod nor any iPod gen.
Obvious differences aside, I'm wondering why a user with both, other than gaming and video, would use one over the other? I seek purchase guidance.
(I would ask the same contrasting questions if anyone has a PSP & iPod?
Are there menu differences?
Is one easier to navigate to a song?
Do both have the ability to remember last point played or memorize that point for each song as does iTunes 7.
Speed of access of a song when unit is completely loaded, (no space left)?
When first turned on how long before you have a song playing?
Nano uses less battery power and recharges faster - true? has that ever been a factor as to which one you picked up?
Especially there is the issue of longevity.
Some say a flash should be fairly indestructible but the Hard Drive in the 5th generation will definitely go in time - sooner than a flash memory?
Reading discussions, it seems I'm reading much more new unit little and big failures on the 5th then the Nano. TRUE?
I believe I am also reading more formating issues with 5th gen. Can I use it on both mac and pc (like a flash card or ext. HD) without reformatting?
Besides watching a video or playing a game, what can you do with a 5th gen that you cannot with a Nano and vice verse?
Can you listen to mp3 and game simultaneously?
How good is the gaming? Better to get a Nintendo or PSP no?
How good is video viewing on 2.5" What about while riding in the passenger seat of a car during daylight etc? I assume it is better in darker environments. Any complaints or mostly praise? Would you purchase 5th gen again just because of the Video?
Is there a past discussion or url with user comments comparing and contrasting the differences between using a 2nd gen Nano and a 5th gen 30gb or 80 gb?

Menus are the same, but Video iPod has "Videos" and "Games" menus
Is one easier to navigate to a song?
Nano has a smaller wheel, so maybe a little harder for someone with large fingers (like mine)
Do both have the ability to remember last point
played or memorize that point for each song as does
iTunes 7.
Yes. If you pause it, and it turns off, when you push play again, it comes right back to that point. When you pause it and change menu veiws, you will have to start the song over, or remember where you were.
Speed of access of a song when unit is completely
loaded, (no space left)?
Depends on what song. Menus scroll alphabetically, or by their playlist order, or album position.
When first turned on how long before you have a song
playing?
Again, depends on where you're playing a song from. If you turn it on and scroll down to "Shuffle Songs", it will start playing in a matter of seconds.

Nano battery lasts longer, recharge in about 3 hrs, give or take

Depends on usage, abuse, etc.

New search options, brightness/volume level controls, gaming capability.

Mac or PC. Once it's formatted for Mac, its Mac for life. A PC formatted iPod can be recognized and used by Mac
Besides watching a video or playing a game, what can
you do with a 5th gen that you cannot with a Nano and

Video has bigger HD capacity. Nano has longer battery life.
Can you listen to mp3 and game simultaneously?
Yes

Graphics wise, PSP is better, also more games for PSP. iPod games are simple and just good for quick entertainment.

Video veiwing is decent, but on a small screen, your eyes can get sore after a while. In bright sunlight it is difficult to see, but not impossible. Best veiwed in room light, or in dark with brightness control adjusted to your preference.

  • What is so good about Oracle Database?

    Dear Sir,
The project that I'm working on is using Oracle database. Therefore, I don't have not much experience in other rdbms.
Sometime my customer ask, what is so good about oracle compare to others like ms sql server, sybase, informix, mysql and so on.
So, hope someone can give some distinctive strength about Oracle database. This is important for me as well as customer so that we can understand that why using Oracle database is the right choice.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

i use napster to discover new music. if i really like it, i track down the CD. 28k wma's or mp3s or whatever sound pretty bad. you're not right about them sounding like cassettes. i think you are forgetting just how bad cassettes sound. most 28k's i've heard sound better then cassettes, but paying $9.99 for 28k tracks....NO WAY. $3 for 28ks? sure the upside of 28ks over cassettes tho is the fact that you can transfer the files around from player to player and mp3s dont get stretched out in the sun :smileyvery-happy:

  • What's so good about Final Cut Pro?

Hi everyone, I am totally new to Macs, switching over from the PC. And so far, I have to say that I honestly enjoy the Macs a lot more than the PC's. With that being said, my wife's friend was telling us that we should invest in Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. The problem is we know nothing about the two programs other than photoshop is obviously working with photos and final Cut has something to do with movies.
So can someone please tell us whats so good about these two programs. And if we were to buy them, is there some sites that offer good tutorials to learn how to operate each of them?

A quick tour of Final Cut Pro can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/
    and Final Cut Express here:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/
There are paid tutorials found at Lynda.com. And a smattering found ALL OVER THE PLACE...some on the Creative Cow:
    http://library.creativecow.net/tutorials/applefinalcutpro
But those are advanced ones for people already familiar with FCP. The ones on Lynda.com are for beginners through experts. And there are books:

  • What is so good about those legal sit

Being the audiophile I am (Not to mention a producer), what the heck is so good about the legal sites?
I mean, there is a nice selection, but 28 freakin' wma bitrate?! It's like paying $9.99 for a new cassette!
What the hell is up with this? Why buy crappy quality?
I'll agree that Npaster to go is good, but once again, you're paying for an unlimited supply of cassettes :-\Message Edited by Jason-CL on 08-02-2005 04: PM

  • Why didn't they do this!!?!?  (What I'd change about my iPod)

Part 1 - the real (easy) beef
I've had my video iPod for about a week now and there's a few things I'd change.
The star rating system. I can set it to no rating or 1-5. So it's basically 0-5 stars. What I'd like is a negative mark for bad apples. For instance - What if I have a song that has poor quality or is missing a bit at the end?
    - What if it's one of those 'secret' songs from a CD that has 9 minutes of silence. ooops, need to edit that one...
    - What if I burned the CD with crossfades between songs. It sounds really messed up when I play the songs out of order...
    - What if the song reminds me of my horrible ex-girlfriend and I just want to delete it from my iPod ASAP! Similarly, what if it's crap? "OMG! WHO put Milli Vanilli on my iPod!? Stupid Ex-girlfriend!"
If I could mark the file with a "bad apple" star or w/e then I wouldn't forget about it the next time I plug into iTunes.
Part 2 - Not so easy, but an idea
I've noticed something else. I can't think of a good fix for it though. When you hold the iPod in your whole palm (like if you just grabbed it from your pocket) your thumb's natural movement is right on top of the screen, not the wheel. You've got to slide the iPod up, or your thumb down to get to the wheel. Additionally, my thumb wants to go ACROSS the wheel. To put it on the wheel itself I have to move the iPod out of my palm and onto my fingers (a drop waiting to happen). Just try it now. You have to balance the iPod. You couldn't do it in space or upsidedown.
You could turn the whole layout 90 degrees, kind of like a PSP, but then it's not ambidextrous.
Part 3 - Reinventing the wheel
I'm left handed, but if I use my iPod in my car I have to use my right hand. This not only makes shifting very hard but takes a long time for my uncoordinated right hand.
I have a touchpad on my laptop and have noticed these things on the wheel and the touchpad. When you move a bunch you drag your whole finger, when you're making fine movements you're best to roll your finger.
When my on Akron Ohio's not-so-smooth (fillings fall out) interstates I notice it rather difficult to delicately roll my thumb with my uncoordinated hand. Hey, I'm driving and I'm balancing the iPod with the iTrip on it.
What if the wheel had different sensitivities? It might have them now... but what if the pressure/speed/radius on the wheel told the iPod how sensitive you wanted it? I.E. Moving slowly, more sensitive. Moving your thumb real close to the button means more sensitive (and you're right by the button to make your selection).
    I'm not complainig, just brainstorming.

  • What other little things about the iPod I should know about?

    Just a quick question,
What are some of the features of the iPod Touch that are not 100% obvious?
    Example...
Yesterday I found out that you could pull up the music controls anywhere(even locked) by pressing the "home" button twice.
After finding the above by accident, I was thinking about if their was any other little hidden things to find.

  • What's So Good About NLSBS 9?

As a small business owner, I'd like to explore Linux because it's cheaper
and (I perceive) more reliable than Microsoft solutions, but I'm
struggling to understand the Linux solutions Novell provides. In a typical
small office environment, the network should provide reliable email,
calendaring, shared and private directories, network printing, Internet
access, firewall protection, and some level of external and internal Web
server publishing. Since we have no dedicated sys admin, administration
    should be pretty easy.
I can get all these things with MS, but would NLSBS 9 be a good option for
providing the services listed above for a small network of 8
    employees/workstations and two servers? Why?

see discussion just above this one
The netware version can definately do what you want. Do you intend to
run just one server or can you afford to run 2 or 3?
I'd suggest you run all the major SBS features on the main netware sbs
server, then use sles9 to run any linux apps you may need to run.
Why choose novell instead of microsoft? That's easy - RELIABLE!!!
Microsoft is famous for being UNRELIABLE.
Please mark my words. After a few years, most (I'm being nice, in my 14
year experience it's been every server) microsoft windows servers slowly
get corrupt due to a few reasons. Heavy disk fragmentation, crazy
patches that fix some things but break a lot of other things, and of
course - viruses! This is not the case with unix or novell servers
    (novell now includes linux).
Unix and Novell servers are just about the most reliable servers you're
going to find. windows has gotten much better than before (I have to
give them credit, win2k3 is MUCH better than winNT). However, windows
is still not as reliable as unix or novell.
A very common practice in corporate data centers is to run anything very
important on unix/novell - whatever is left that's not too important can
run on windows. It's been this way for years - I for one think this is
    a very wise approach.

  • What's so good about the Venture?

Can someone help me to understand this?  Lately around here I've been hearing a lot of talk about people applying for or wanting the Venture.  I'm just now starting to do my research and it's going to take me several days to get through all the recent threads.  I'm going to read all of them but I may get antsy and apply for something before then. I understand that your venture miles can be redeemed for statement credits on travel.  You get 2x miles on all purchases.  But wouldn't 2% from Citi DC or Fidelity Amex be the same thing but way better?  Even if you travel all the time, having the option to spend your points elsewhere can't be a bad thing right?  Plus the Venture has an AF.   So from where I'm sitting, the Venture looks way worse than Citi DC or Fido Amex even if you travel.  What am I missing here?
The signup bonus makes it worth the triple pull just barely, so I may apply if I can think of a good reason.  Convince me to apply for this card!  I don't care about a high limit on a card that won't be my main spender and has a high APR... I have 0% util so padding limits isn't useful to me.  Is that the only reason people are going nuts over this card?

I have 0% util so padding limits isn't useful to me.  Is that the only reason people are going nuts over this card? Historically this forum goes all starry-eyed when creditors start handing out outsized limits. To be brutally honest, my Venture app - I don't care about the bonus, I do care about the limit not on that card, but when I go apply for a couple of cards I do care about (non-trivial lines on balance carrying cards just in case I need them to float in times of financial stress rather than just filing a BK and being done with it, even 3 months either way is enough time for me to get something to start paying down my debt). Beyond that don't need it, sitting on a CSP pre-approval which will be my long-term travel card, and I have a Fidelity Amex already though I wouldn't mind a CLI on that someday and for acceptance and online transaction fee reasons I'd rather have a Citi DC, but end of the day we've seen far too often that current limits beget future limits, and my limits are incredibly low compared to most people on this forum but now it's time to do something about that as I get close to credit card portfolio completion.  I don't need 200K limits, I do need more than the 34K I'm on now and I do need lower APR's than what I have access to now for financial defense reasons. Venture is part of the two step process to that for me, nothing more.My thought pattern exactly.

  • What's so good about tile maps?

I've been testing a 2d platform game I'm working on (for a bit of a laugh), and I was about to start working of some sort of tile map system for the scrolling backgrounds, and I though 'what the hey, rather than use a tile map I could just draw the whole level as one big gif', or maybe break it down to 5/8 images or something.
Fullscreen bufferStrategy can easily handle all the unnecessary off-screen drawings and I'm not relying on image data for collisions as all collisions are done with bounding boxes (I'll eventually only be testing the onscreen bounding boxes, so there's a small saving :)
I done a test with the player checking for 2000 (way OTT) collisions per game loop, and drawing 2 huge scrolling images (one a transparent gif the other solid, and it didn't drop a frame). Also this way there are no restrictions to the detail I can put in the background and anyone will easily be able to draw there own image and load it into the editor (when its finished) and click in a few platforms/badguys and stuff very easily.
The background image size will probably end up about 233k per level. The screen rez will be 320/240 for that chunky pixel look.
    Am I being lazy :)

John Carmack once described tile-based systems as, essentially, a really poor compression scheme.
Compression aside, there is value in tile-based systems.
You can create many, many maps (and let your users make their own) with little trouble with a map editor and a tile set. The reason Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale II were so painful to make for the artists was that each map had to be hand drawn - all of it. Neverwinter Nights uses 3D tilesets, resulting in easy development, even for unskilled (in terms of art) hobbyists.

  • HT1322 what should i do about my ipod touch 4th generation's battery?

My ipod touch 4th generation lasts about 10 minutes i have had it for about two years now and it has obviously run out of warranty so should i replace the battery or is there any way to fix this

The fixed-price for non-warranty replacements and battery changes can be found here.
However, it's worth trying a few things yourself just in case it's not a battery problem.  First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • What can i do about my quickly dying ipod and what is the problem?

I bought my ipod touch 4th gen 32gb about 10 months ago in 2011 on December, after about 6 months since i bought it the battery started to last for shorter times. Now ( after 10 months today is 20th of september 2012) it really doesnt last for very long at all. After i fully charge it and play a game and do other stuff aswell it sometimes only lasts for 1 and a half to 2 hours only. It also charges very quickly now. I use both my laptop and the belkin ipod charger to charge it i use the cable that came with the ipod and sometimes use it with a usb extender. I also sometimes use the ipod while it is charging. I also sometimes take it out of charging before it is finished but i don't do this very much because i heard it was bad for the battery.
My question is what can i do about this problem and what might apple be able to do. i want to know how to increase the battery life. And i also want to know is there something i am doing wrong during my charging process or something. I don't to do any of that stuff like taking the back of the ipod off or jailbreaking it, i don't want to stuff the ipod up and i want to keep it like a real ipod. Please help i really want to keep my ipod in good condition so please help if you can
    Thank you

    Hello!
So my iPod Touch battery is like this too..except worse.  I can't take mine off the charger considering it will die in less than a minute. I recently posted a question like this too so if I get any feedback, i'll let u know.  Stay in there & dont charge it unless it's COMPLETELY dead (not to were it turns off, but to were it's telling you "20% Battery Remaining), and don't take it off the charger unless it's COMPLETELY charged. Hope I helped a little, and i'll get back to you if I find anything else. Sorry to hear about this! #IKnowHowYouFeel #DumbBatteries

Take a look at the troubleshooting steps provided by Apple in this support article:

    Hope those help.
Your iPod touch will never appear in Windows Explorer, by the way. It doesn't have the "disk mode" that the older iPods did.
