What's that big space display that's suddenly appeared

Ive just added an external hardrive to my iMac. All fine. But when I click on time machine - instead of opening up from the dock (its ok if I open from system preferences) the screen turns into this huge space picture with my file windows disappearing to infinity (very pretty) and a big bar across the bottom that says Cancel / Today Now / Restore. What's that about and what does it have to do with backing up my files? I cant see anything obviously backing up anything ... just this big picture.

That "big space" means you've entered Time Machine in case you want to restore something. Each of those windows (as they go back) are each of your incremental backups. If you look at the bottom of the screen, the first one will show "now". When you click on a window farther back, "now" will change to the date & time of that backup.
So you guessed it... The icon in the Preferences Pane is for setting TM's preferences. The Dock icon is the Time Machine app itself. If you want more options when clicking on the TM icon (in the Dock), right-click or CTRL-click on it. This'll let you "backup now", open preferences, etc.

With iOS 7, the devices have become more sensitive to the type of cable that is being used to charge the device. I have found that with my iPhone 4, once I upgraded to iOS 7, it became a little more sensitive to even my iPad charger. It doesn't always recognize it if I just plug it in, but if I slide it in slowly until I hear the charging tone, then I can push it the rest of the way in, and everything works as it should.
Any chance the cable is bent or frayed? How long have you had the device and cable? If it is under a year old, take it into the Apple Store (device and cable) so you can show them what is happening. They should replace your cable.

I have a thick grey bar that has suddenly appeared at the top of my viewing screen below the navigation bar. it has a symbol that looks like the add-on tool

The symbol in the middle of the bar is a box with an arrow in it and two small round cylinders on top.
If I right click on the bar and inspect element it returns object#SCB_Bar Then if I copy inner HTML element it gives me this info.

Something that appears on all pages could be a feature of an add-on. You could review your extensions and disable ALL nonessential ones here:

Reload the page. If it doesn't load, choose Activity from Safari's Window menu, find that picture in the list, and see what it says to the right; this may reveal what the problem is.

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

After phone support from apple I ended up creating a new project and adding all 117 clips back in individually till I found out what clips flagged and would not allow me to export. I had 3 I deleted and replaced and everything works now 1hr after tedious work....

Opening the utility "activity monitor", I see a process that appears and disappears, called 3265 "du" process. It occupies a lot of CPU % system (the red one in the mac activity monitor utility). Anyone knows what's that and how can I remove it?

What is that 3rd big slot on the right side of the MBA for? You have the mini-DVI, followed by a USB slot & then there is this unmarked "kinda like for SD" slot.
