What's that noise?

My 10 month old 12" PB, 1.5 GHz, has suddenly started making noise when it heats up. I'm assuming its the fan. Of course, it doesn't do it all the time .. just some of the time and it never used to at all. Should I take it to the Apple Store for repair?
Thank you

hi, Tom4jax -
difficult to help you at this moment. can you describe the noise somewhat better? is it a fan, or is it a clicking sound from the disk drive? i presume it is not noise form the loudspeakers (just to be sure...)
and what do you mean with "heating up"?
Under normal conditions, my PB12 is quiet; there is a very very little fan sound. when I start it, i can hear the hard disk working. When the PB has to work very hard, the fans are kicking in in order to cool the processor.
this as indication how my PB works wrt noise.
please, post back with some more details.

  • What's that noise on the new PowerBook?

Anybody with the new PowerBook (or old) sometimes hear some pretty low screaming noise coming from the LCD direction? Yeah, I know it's hollaween today, but what is it really?

    Larry,
same with me, but I think, this is sort of vibration coming from the base. Because, if i move the powerbook from the glass table (where it is situated normally) to another (wooden or cloth covered) surface, it stops.
But at halloween yesterday, it seemed to have been even louder

  • Wake Up Dear - What's That Noise?

We had one of those moments very early Saturday morning. My wife woke me up with that question. Sure enough, there was an odd sound. It took a few minutes to get fully awake, and begin to explore the source. I tracked it down to water running down the downspouts. RAIN! Now, most of you would never understand how the sound of rain, and a little water could be so alien, but you would, if you lived in the High Sonoran Desert. It is a sound that we seldom hear, and it might well be 9 mos., since we last heard similar.
Today looks like something from John T's realm. The clouds are so low, that they are obscuring Lookout Mountain, only about 1 mile away. They are passing up my little box-canyon, and blocking out the view of the golf course, many 20 yards from my fence. We have had 0.5" + of rain, already, with maybe another 0.5" + to come. Luckily, it is slow, and actually can sink into our armour plate ground, unlike the monsoon rains, that just fill up all the arroyos and sweep unsuspecting campers down the valley.
Personally, I would give up an entire weekend, to have this keep up, because we can certainly use it.

When you get right around that 32F mark, stuff can get very nasty.
One "test" that I used on snowy roads was my "squeek test." If the snow "squeeked," as I drove over it, it was quit cold, and offered good traction with the right tires. If the snow did not squeek, then it was warmer, and traction was at a premium.
Add in other conditions, such as slush, hail, sleet (just greased ball-bearings that are cold), and you have a real mixed bag.
In Colorado, things were usually worse in the Autumn and Spring, as temps were not all that cold. Give me snow at -10F, and I was cool. The warmer it got, the less sure I was of traction.
Spring was often very bad in CO, as the nights were cold, but the days warm. Snow would thaw, and the resulting water would run across the highway, in a laminar flow. So far, so good. However, as the temps dropped at night, that laminar flow would freeze, forming "black ice." It could look just like it did, when it was liquid, or could have a light dusting of snow covering it. Regardless, it was nasty stuff. I-70, and especially near the Eisenhower Tunnel (under Loveland Pass), and on Vail Pass, was subject to black ice - especially Vail Pass, just above the bottom, at Copper Mtn. the drainage was above surface, and would fill with snow plowed there, then melt, running across the highway. When the temps dropped, it would freeze and cause hundreds of accidents. People would sit in the bars at Copper Mtn, just watching everyone run off the highway, and fall over the cliff to the ski area below. Talk about "happy hour!"
With experience, one learned many of the stretches of "bad road," and drove accordingly. Vail Pass, Eisenhower Tunnel approach from either side, Monarch Pass US 50), Palmer Divide (I-25), US 143 into Telluride, etc.
Give me squeeky snow, and I could safely do 60 mph on the highway. Let the temps come up, and it was maybe 20 - 30, even in 4-wheel drive.
I wish you luck, and hope that you have really good snow tires on the Cougar. Does MN allow studs? I never used those in CO, but they ARE popular in the Northeast.

  • There is a loud knocking sound underneath the my key board what is that noise?, there is a loud knocking sound underneath the my key board what is that noise?

THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND UNDER NEATH MY KEYBOARD SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS CLICKING AGAINST SOMETHING ELSE HELP ME PLEASE

Before you send it for repair, try different RAM chips or HDD in it, if you have any sitting around.
I've had heat issues on my Dell @ work whose RAM stick went bad and new stick fixed it.
In any case, Apple technicians @ the store are helpful and they run diagnostics (for cheap) before doing any repairs, so you may have them do the diagnostics and repair it yourself afterwards, if it truns out to be just a bad RAM or HDD.
I hope you get out of it cheap.

I bought a ibook G4 2005 refur-ed it is making a fan running noise when I listen to sample music on line and it will not stop until I reboot.. What could that be also bottom of computer very hot?

When my iBook got hot like that, I would take a break and let it cool down.
You can buy laptop desks that have USB powered fans on them, such as the Targus Chill Mat.

  • My mac made a heating noise, what does that mean?

I woke up this morning to my macbook pro making this loud heating noise, like an exhaust fan. What does that mean?

More Information on your Mac would be great, thats kind of vague.
But Macbook Pro's do have a (all i can really speak of) exhaust on the back right where the screan attaches to the body of the mac, and some times when running certain processor intense programs like games, or Photo / Movie editing programs will make this turn on, and yes it can be loud and anoying, but its nothing really to worry about.
    Hope this helps you.

  • WHAT'S THAT TERRIBLE NOISE?????

I've just bought a 60GB video IPOD and I'm already terrified with its problems... specially because I didn't buy it in my country and don't believe I could just change it.....
Well, while I start listening to it, after just a few minutes (like 2 or 3) a very loud and sharp noise starts while I still listen to the music very low.....
It's happening in the car, with the earphones and stereos...
The IPOD just comes back after reseting it, but after the 2 minutes listenning there comes back that ****** noise!!!
Should I use the others "R's"? Or am I screwed?

I have the same issue and it started appearing since this years official Apple ipod update. The issue is that after few minutes of playback (sometimes even up to 30 minutes!) the music playback is degraded significantly - or you can say that it is noisy... THE FIX IS is to restore your ipod with 2005-10-12 ipod update software and NOT installing any more recent updates. Even the latest from 2006-03-23 is not addressing this issue. You can find update soft in your applications/uttilities folder - or, if you are a new user -- well, I hope there is one available in versiontracker.com or apple/osx/downloads
Now, I am surprised that Apple didn't recognized and included this issue fix in the past few updates. Seems to me they are getting sloppy... Second outrageous thing is that you can only post your comments on this forum - there is absolutely no direct bug post regarding ipod related issues (there could be one in itunes for example). Safari, itunes and other software have it. Anyone listening?
I have 5g ipod with video 60 gb version.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. My Apple TV all of a sudden refuses to show the movies from my MacBook and says it needs to set time network. What is that?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV should set it's time automatically from the network time server, if it isn't doing this try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds, if this fails try resetting or restoring it.

When I click to pay my songs in the library they will not play and it shows a circle with an exclamation point within it. What does that mean, how do I fix it, and how will it play my songs again? They used to play before on my Iphone4 with no problem, but since I upgraded to the Iphone4s there is an issue.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.
