What's the 411 on the new machine?

i have a first generation mac pro (2006) and it is getting time for an upgrade partly due to my need to upgrade OS to match my laptop. i have a couple of boot camp installations to run windows xp and windows 7 so i am half thinking of keeping my old machine and buying a new one just for mac OS and a parallels installation with windows 7.
i have a pretty solid backup routine here where i have two operating drives in the mac pro (one for the OS is 1 TB and one for the DATA is 2 TB) and the two other drives in the mac pro backup these two drives (so these are internal backups). then i basically have an external clone of the data and a time machine backup of the data. then i also keep an "off site" backup of both of these drives in my truck.
this took quite awhile to figure out and set up so i am a little leery of figuring this out again but i am also somewhat leery of having to drop +/- $1000 on externals to get the new desktop backed up with proper external drives.
can anyone help me figure out if this new machine has a good chance of being as good as my old desktop? whether i should wait until the second generation comes out. what features i should look for and or watch out for? what kind of externals i will need to get up and running?
i don't really want to spend the time and cash on this but if it buys me another 5 - 6 years of low hassle computing on the newer OS's it will be worth it.
THANKS

Is it possible to make this QT-X "pro", so it does all the stuff QT7 did?
No, not at this time. QT 7 represents a decade of "old technology" enhancements. QT X is a "new technology" re-write and is still in its infancy. (I.e., definitely "not ready for prime time" yet.) As such, it will likely continue to evolve over the next decade.
Or failing that, what's the new procedure that the geniuses from Cuppertino want us to use now?
Can't speak for Apple, but most of the regular QT 7 Pro users simply continue to use it. If your system was upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard by yourself and previously had QT 7 Pro installed, it should have been moved from the "Applications" folder to the "Utilities" folder automatically. If a new system and the QT 7 Player is not already installed in the Utilities folder ready for keying for Pro use, then you can install it from your included discs or download the Snow Leopard compatible version of the QT 7.6.6 Player from Apple's site HERE. Be advised that you must use a QT version modified for the dual 32-/64-bit mode environment and not the regular QT 7.6.6 version for Leopard.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipad- without syncing : File>Transfer Purchases
In some countries you can redownload some itunes content.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • How can I copy the Mail "rules" I have already setup on my old MacBook over to the new machine?

Setting up my new MacBook Pro. How can I copy the Mail "rules" I have already setup on my old MacBook over to the new machine?
Is there a file I can copy & paste?

    Thanks Barry & all,
Is it enough to just copy the rule-related files ??
    i.e.
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/RulesActiveState.plist
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/SyncedRules.plist
    Library/Mail/V2/MailData/UnsyncedRules.plist
What you suggest copies the local mailbox content + all the settings ...
while what I need is much less... and I'd like to be able to sync rules also in the future
by copying something light and simple ... not the entire Library/Mail folder

  • How can I get a Mac to redo the new machine setup?

    Hey gang-
Is there a way to get a Mac to redo the new machine setup dialogs the way a Mac does the first time it is started out of the box? I'm selling my iBook and it would be nice for the new owner to be presented with that. I know I could do it by erasing and reinstalling the original CDs, but I'd like to include the various incremental Software Updates that I've done to save the new user the trouble.
Is there a way to get a Mac to do this?
    Thanks!
    Dave

John's method may work for the most part, but there are some things to be aware of that might cause problems for you or the new owner.
First, it doesn't get rid of everything you have installed or caused to be created in /Library or any of the caches except those in the /User folder. Some of the /Library items are probably things you want to pass on to the new owner, such as plug-ins that support apps. Some aren't, such as many of the /Library/Preferences items set by an admin user. Some may even contain sensitive data.
Second, you will be passing on a lot of clutter of dubious value to the new user, like logs, & any corruption of files that an Erase & Install would get rid of.
Third, Setup Assistant may or may not be designed to work & play well with updated apps & system components. This is unchartered territory. It may "undo" some of the things you want the new owner to have, or not.
Forth, if you have set up, for example, the Apache web server or any other UNIX-based service that required root or sudo access, these files will not necessarily be in their default state.
Fifth, there may be support items in /Users/Shared for both Apple & third party apps. John's step 4 will erase them.
Sixth, you need to consider OS 9 folders if you have used Classic, particularly if you have migrated anything from an older Mac. You may have user items, preferences, etc. that need to be purged.
Seventh, I probably have forgotten other things that more knowledgeable folk can fill you in on.
So, while it is possible to do what you want, it isn't really as easy as it seems. A better approach, & one that will serve both you & the new owner better in the long run, is to completely wipe the drive with a secure erase. Consider making a "bonus" CD or DVD for the new owner with all the latest updates, as a companion to the original installer set.
Something else to consider: If the Mac that you are putting up for sale did not come with Tiger, you can't include it legally in your sale unless you include the retail DVD & license you used to install it. The same is true of any apps that you might have added to the used Mac, including shareware you payed for. Aside from the ethical implications, you do not want to run into problems because of "shared" registration codes should you need them for support or upgrades.

I exported my passwords to a flash drive, and have a new computer. How do I get those passwords moved to the NEW machine?

Firefox doesn't have an "export" feature built into it for password data.
Exactly what did you do to "export" your passwords?
    Did you use this extension?
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/password-exporter/
If so, see the screenshots on that page to see the Import function.
If you copied the two files that are used for storing passwords from the old computer to back them up, just copy those 2 files into the Profile folder on the new computer to restore them.

Since you don't really have a question, I will give you a very broad information source for the next time you have a Time Machine question.

Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • How do I transfer all the information in my iTunes on my old mac book to my new mac book pro so I can sync my devices to the new machine with erasing all the data my iPhone and iPad?

I have just bought a new mac book pro and want to use this machine as the main computer to which I will sync my iPhone and iPad.
How do I transfer the information within iTunes on my old mac book so when I connect the devices the new machine will not erase all my data?
    Thank you

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

If you export bookmarks to an HTML file then you create a copy of your bookmarks and you edit that copy and you do not affect the original bookmarks.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

what is the new sap note for Ptax slabs of FY 2011-12.

    Hi,
The Profession Tax tables T7INP3 & T7INP4 are customizing tables in which the entries are to be modified. SAP provides the initial entries and, if there is any change in slab rates, then you would need to update these slabs manually.
Please delimit the slab code in table T7INP3 and then create a new slab code entry from the date of delimition for the new rates in table T7INP4.

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

    Hello,
Versions 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 are actually patched version of APEX 3.1. As such, they don’t introduce new features, but mainly fix bugs from the main release. If you want to learn specific details about these versions, you should read the readme file attached to the patch set files (on metalink).
It’s always best to work with the latest patched version, as it reduces your chances to encounter bugs. In general, so far the new APEX versions added many new features and technologies, while maintaining backward compatibility, so existing applications functionality is not impaired. Personally, I don’t see any reason not to upgrade and use the latest version, certainly when you are comparing 3.1 to 3.1.2.
    Regards,
    Arie.
