What's the best free anti-virus software to use?

I'm looking for the best FREE anti-virus software for personal use. Suggestions? If you could give me the top 2-3 or those that clearly separate themselves from the pack, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Darien,
Allan is right it's really not needed for MacOSX, but if you feel you need protection from viruses/malware download and install ClamXav. If you want real time scanning for files and downloads use the Clam Sentry feature. Open ClamXav, go to preferences activate clam sentry, when asked  what folder to watch just enter the / which will monitor your entire system. Hope this helps.

    No antivirus software is needed.
Install all System, Applications and Security updates released by Apple.

  • What is the best free anti-virus download to use on my MacBook Pro?

I'm worried that whatever Apple has built into the computer is not enough security. Is there a free anti-virus download for Macs? Do they do the job or do I have to spend money on something better? The download would need to identify and fix the problems. I mostly email, search the internet, sometimes buy things, download Kindle books, do my banking, etc. I would really not want to spend any money if it's not needed. Thanks.

In General 3rd Party AV Software and Cleaning Utilities tend to cause More Issues than they claim to fix...
    They Not Required...
Mac OS X tends to look after itself.

    Thanks a lot!

None. Have a look at these links from The Safe Mac, klaus1 and John Galt. They provide useful, informed opinion on the merits, or otherwise, of installing anti-virus software on a Mac:

and should a do a clean istall of mac os cause now i cant install anything
AND YES U DO NOT NEED TO TELL ME THAT MACS DONT GET VIRUSES I KNOW
I Just need a anti virus for some backup sometimes

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger and Leopard from (on no account install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac running OS X):
    http://www.clamxav.com/
The new version for Snow Leopard is available here:
    http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta
(Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.)
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:

  • What is the best anti virus software to use with OS X 10.8?

What is the best anti virus software to use with OS X 10.8?  Norton is slowing my iMac down and I'm constantly being bombarded by blocking messages for programs I don't recognize.
    Thanks

Get rid of Norton a/k/a Symantec. It is one of the worst pieces of trash you can install on a Mac.
You do not need any additional anti-virus software than is already designed into OS X to protect your Mac against malware. I assume you paid enough for your iMac and that's part of what you paid.
If you use Windows, or are concerned about harboring viruses that target Windows, or care about friends who use Windows, then get ClamXav. It's in the App Store and it is free.
Since friends don't let friends use Windows, I have no use for it.

  • What is the best free software to create an advert on?

I am looking to create a couple of adverts both poster and video, i was wondering what is the best free software to make these on?

For laying out the poster ad
    Free, open source apps.
GImp (free, open source Photoshop replacement)
    http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
    PIxelmator (cheap near Photoshop-like replacement)
    http://www.pixelmator.com/
    Free Vector drawing app.
    Inkscape
    http://www.inkscape.org/en/download/mac-os/
    Drawberry
    http://raphaelbost.free.fr/DrawBerry.html
Free Page Layout app, if needed.
If this is already on your Mac.
    Apple Pages app.
    OR Free, open source
    Scribus OS X
    http://www.scribus.net/canvas/Scribus
There aren't very many free video editors for Mac OS X.
If this is already on your Mac,
    iMovie
    KDenlive
    http://kdenlive.org/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive
    LIghtworks OS X
    http://www.lwks.com/
A few caveats about Lightworks video editor.
OS X version is free to download and use as a public beta testing.
This is a very comprehensive video editor, but for free use, you have to register as a public beta tester and every week you use this you have to re-register the app and answer a survey of questions about the software.
If you do not comply with the beta testing rules and procedures, and the developer believes you are not actively invovled with the beta testing to help develope and improve this app, the developer has the right to discontinue your free use of the software and you will no longer be able to use or activate the software.
I really wanted to try this software for free, but didn't want to have to be tied to the beta testing rules, constant developement surveys, questions and weekly re-registering as a beta tester for the use of this software.

  • HT2476 what is the best free publishing software please?

What is the best basic home publishing software please? Is there free software available?

Instead of leaving you hanging without an actual answer, try here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/find/mac/desktop%20publishing
I put desktop publishing into the search box. Some of the links only have "desktop" or "publishing" as a match, so really have nothing to do with what you want. Trying to put the phrase in quotes actually resulted in matches that weren't even close.
Anyway, Scribus in in that list. I've heard of it, it's free and a lot of users seem to like it. The only other free one is Cenon.
Shareware ones you could try are Desktop Publisher Pro and Page Layout Designer. That's also a few marked commercial or demo, which are iStudio Publisher, iCalamus and Swift Publisher.
Just to note, I haven't tried any of these as I use InDesign. But it's a place to start.
