What's the best mouse for heavy video and audio editing?

I do an enormous of audio and video editing.  I'm finally feeling the strange sensations of tightness in my right hand (being right-handed).  I realize now that the typical mouse design is bad for heavy precision work.  When I use my son's Mac flat mouse, I notice that my hand lies flat and somewhat rested while working.
Can anyone recommend a great flat or other mouse for my PC?

I guess it's all a matter of personal preference.
When I got my Mac, the first thing I did was replace that God-awful Mighty Mouse with a nice, generic two-button roller mouse.
They all work about the same. I guess it's mostly about your personal ergonomic comfort.

  • What is the best way to make video and audio the same lengths for posting on Web?

YouTube recommends doing this to avoid sync problems. Maybe it will also make my videos run more smoothly. I'm talking here about random pauses I see in my movies on YouTube, not the uniform stuttering problem which I pretty much solved by redoing the movie at 30 fps instead of 24 fps. (Original is 18 fps Super 8 movie film.)
Anyway, there is no sound during my titles. The soundtrack starts about 17 seconds in, and ends when the ending titles begin. So what's the best way to add silent audio? The best I can figure is to take some existing sound, put it in where the titles are, and turn the volume down to zero. Seems real workaround-ish, so to speak, to me. It seems to work. I even cranked it up on headphones to make sure there was no residual noice. But I'm curious if there's a better way? No biggie if not.
    Thanks.

I should have included the following:
1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie.

  • What's the Best App For Watching Videos on iPad Air?

Okay, so there's no Flash past, present or future for the iPad.  I read some discussions here in the archives from a year and two ago about which workaround works around best (or least badly).  Is there any update now as of December 2013 for what's the best app for viewing videos online on the iPad (Air)?  Thanks.

I downloaded the new (2013) version of Photon and it's been playing, appropriately enough, episodes of Star Trek: TAS that otherwise require Flash.   The one thing I have to remember is to click the goofy lighting bolt icon toward the top right-hand corner of the Photon screen when I return to warch an episode if I stopped in the middle.  Basically it will turn off the "Flash" emulation when the screen goes dark with inactivity, and then when you reopen Photon it crashes and you have to re-reopen Photon, click on the link to return to the website, and then click the lightning bolt icon.  I don't know why the producers made it that way, as it's pretty inconvenient, but maybe they wanted to make a browser more than a Flash emulator.  I haven't tried other Flash videos yet, but so far, so good.  :-)

thats way too vague of a question... best what?  quality? size? playback?
best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • What is the best Computer for HD video editing where can I get it under $3000-5000? Thank you!

What is the best Computer for HD video editing where can I get it under $3000- $5000.00?

The wording of your question suggests you may be new to video editing, in which case the types of projects you will be doing may not be the most complex.
Please accept my apology if that assumption is incorrect.
The cheapest computer available will edit 1080p video perfectly well but if you must have the "best" you will be looking at nothing less than a MacPro.
Too many people get hung up about the equipment they use  and blame it for any inadequacies  .  .  .  when the most important component is the operator.

  • What is the best way for my partner and I to share our work across computers?

What is the best way for my business partner and I to share our work (projects, libraries, images) across computers without emailing items?  Is there creative cloud storage place we can share?

Can't I just purchase the 200 GB storage, throw our photo library in it, share it with her, and have both of our new and future pics dumped into it?  If so, how do I do that?
The iCloud Photo Library cannot be shared between users, unless you are using the same AppleID.
You can share selected photos with shared albums:  iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ
Or create a Photos library on an external drive, that you both can access, as described here for iPhoto:   iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users

  • What is the best app for address labels and mail merge?

What is the best app for address labels, mail merge and keeping track of customers information?

Whilst this will work, it's intended for merging information (e.g. producing personally-addressed letters to a list of people).
If you simply want address labels, open Contacts and then choose which contacts you want (either a group or hold down Cmd and click on those you want - if they're together, click on the first and use Shift when you click on the last). No need to select any if you want all.
Then press Cmd-P and click on Show Details (at the bottom). Choose Labels (at the right hand side) and choose the size labels you have. You can even adjust the font and colour if you wish.

    Hi
In my opinion the 720p-30 is good enough for Youtube.

  • What's the best way to sync video and sound?

If I'm going to make a music video with performance shots (lip-syncing) interspersed with story-line shots, what's the best way to line them up. I mean, I start with some video shot from a car while the song is playing, then transition to a shot of me singing. Say I get the singing clip lined up perfect, then when I add the transition, isn't that going to mess with the timing? And of course, I'll be doing this multiple times throughout the video. Say I get the first one right, then add some more storyline video and another performance clip and I lock that (second) clip to the audio. Isn't that going to shift my first performance clip when I add a transition? Am I making sense?

First look at all your material ..'review' it.
As you say so rightly: "..then when I add the transition, isn't that going to mess with the timing?.." ..yes; but only if you haven't allowed for the length of each transition when you first line up your clips.
So watch your footage, think where you want to cut it, and then immediately think "what kind of transition there, and for how long?" ..Imagine it, in your head, so if you think "that would work best with a quick two-thirds of a second dissolve" jot down that you want to leave an extra two-thirds of a second at the start of the clip which you want to transition into.
In the US of A, at 30 frames per second of NTSC video, two-thirds of a second is 20 frames. (..The frame counter gets up to 0:29 and then changes to 1:00, because the 30th frame changes it over to the next second..)
In Europe the frame rate is 25 per second - so after 0:24 comes 1:00 - so two-thirds of a second is about 0:16.
So when you start to cut your video clips, if you're going to have a two-thirds of a second dissolve between your first two, you'll need to leave an extra 20 (NTSC) or 16 (PAL) frames at the start of your second clip, before the action you want begins onscreen, so that those frames will be "eaten away" in the dissolve between the end of the previous clip and the start of the clip which follows it.
If you definitely want to see the last few frames of "lip-sync" - for some reason - of the first (outgoing) clip, then leave the extra frames on the end of that clip, instead of at the start of the following clip, but it usually works best to ensure that the follow-on clip starts with those extra "sacrificial" frames.
If you want to use any embedded audio that's in the video clips - and you're not simply matching up the video to external sound (..such as an iTunes track or your own material which you're pre-recorded..) then be sure to Extract the audio from your clips as soon as you've cut them, and before you apply any transitions. This keeps their audio safely "marooned" on an audio track, where you can edit it separately, and then match it to the edited video.
So prepare all your video first, and cut it to have excess "tops and tails" which you can eat away during the transitions. (The only transition which doesn't eat away material is iMovie's "Overlap", which freezes the outgoing clip, and dissolves the incoming clip into that freeze-frame. But that - in my opinion -doesn't look to good with music videos, because it freezes the flow of the video, and makes it seem too pointlessly 'jerky'.)

  • What are the best practices for Database management and performance tuning?

    Hello,
I want to ensure that I am using the best practices for managing and maintaining our Database.
Is there any documentation out there that outlines how to maintain and ensure top performance out of our database?
    Thank you!
    John Sefton

I appreciate the responses, however this is not the information I am looking for.
I am specificaly looking for best practices invloving the managment and performance tuning.
Example: are their tools that I can install that will monitor the size and response time of the database and alert me if there is degradation in performance?
Are there specific periodic activities I should be doing to garuntee that my database will continue to function that way it is supposed to?
Or is this a fire and forget solution that does not need this attention?

  • What is the best format for HDV video for a computer playback

    Hello guys,
I have made a very nice HDV video and after the frustration and awful results with compression for
SD DVD, I have decided just to export that video as a file, put that file on DVD, so people can just pop that DVD into their computers, copy that file on their HD and play it. (so there is no compression needed for over internet data transfer, Bit Rates for space, etc). The video is
HDV 1080i 60. If I export it from FCP as a QT Movie the quality is beautiful. But when being watched on the computer screen, there are those interlace lines visible, when any faster motion in the video occurs. So I am wondering, what would be the best export option in order to provide best qualities for computer playback. Would it be some of those QT progressive modes, like 1080 p24? Or any other?
    Thank you for your help.
    Cheers,
    K.

    Chris Walsh1 wrote:
Why are you using FCP 6.02? Why didn't you do the update to 6.04?? I did, and I am having tons of issues
That is pretty much the reason. It is fresh out the gate and so far untested. I am not an early adopter of any new technology (soft or hardware wise). I like to wait it out and see what other peoples' experience is. A bit of a prickish way to put it is: "In Chess, the pawns go first." (I'm a big Chess nerd -- I have Chess analogies for just about everything).
But even if the latest FCP, OS X and QT versions were humming along without any reported issues by the "power users" (by that I mean people who are editing on their systems 40+ hours a week in a professional capacity) I still wouldn't have upgraded because I am in the middle of three projects.
Well, that isn't entirely the truth. I started all three projects on a PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 and FCP 5.1.4. In the midst of this I started an across-the-board upgrade -- new computer, monitor, OS and FCS. But what I did (am still doing) is migrating from one to another and testing the performance on the new one before committing. In doing my research before hand, I see that the magic cocktail for stability appears to be OS X 10.5.2, FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.4.5 so I built my new MacPro to that and stayed there. I have migrated all my current projects to the new system and have been putting the new setup to the test and is passing at every turn, so I feel confident I can work on this new system and will be retiring the PowerMac soon, but throughout this process I always had my stable G4 setup available so I wouldn't risk losing any work.
Might the reason the video you compressed "looked great" be because you didn't do the update?
Maybe, but I can't say with any certainty.
In the old compressor, I had no problems (in earlier versions of my project) compressing the video. It always looked GREAT! In 3.03, I get weird issues that don't make sense to me at all.
In the older version of compressor, this never happened. Even on this project.
Then I would think the update is the likely culprit.
Here is what I would like to try as my final attempt. I just bought yet ANOTHER computer. A Mac Pro/Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo. I'd like to try to load Final Cut Studio on this machine, but where should I stop my upgrading? What is good stable working system for everyone??
OS X 10.5.2, FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.4.5 is working great for me, and it appears for others here as well. I am running a new octo-2.8GHz Mac Pro.

  • What is the best system for HD Video Editing?

We are planning to upgrade our system for HD video editing and I am looking for a system that will perform better with Adobe Premiere CS6 and CC. These are the options that we have:
PROCESSOR : 4.3 GHz Intel Core i7-4960  OR Dual 2.6 GHz Intel Xeon E5-2630 (both with 6-cores and 15 MB cache) - Which is more powerful?
GPU  : Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 w/ 6GB GDRR5 OR Dual 3GB NVIDIA Quadro K4000 - Which is more stable? more faster for rendering?
Both will have 64GB of RAM and 512GB SSD 6Gb/s MAIN + 3TB 7200RPM Storage. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

First read Tweakers Page and all the articles there.
Then you will understand why it is better to opt for an i7-4930K and a single GTX 760 with that disk setup. Otherwise you will end up with a convoluted, unbalanced system, spending money unwisely.

  • What is the best software for converting video files to .ogg format?

In trying to html5 compliant I want to convert my video files to the .ogg format. After a lot of searching for video converters, I cannot find one that does this; although several claim to but actually don't. Converting audio isn't so much of a problem. So, can you suggest a tool for converting video files to .ogg format?

  • What is the best product for network mapping and monitoring? I am an inexperienced user). Mac 10.9.2 laptop

I have lots of questions, but the gist is that I want to know the best product, preferably from the app store, that I can use for network mapping mapping and monitoring.
I want to get their mac address or other police trackable etc info so I can use my computer safely.
    I am also being cyberbullied.
I try just using ethernet but still get intruded on, for instance, messages that "other devices are using my ip address". The only other device I own is an iPod that I keep sahut off plus wifi turned off then.
(NOTE:  You can skip the rest of this message if you want. It regards hacking attempts etc,  a little out of the scope of discussion, perhaps).
Also a home intrusion where computer was thoroughly hacked with router(s) set up "very very close to me," according to Apple.
Also, hackers get into my Facebook and gmail and yahoo mail, really,  no matter what I try to do on my computer and how many times I change passwords it does no good.
Also,  The ip addresses for google and the one in syste preferences and the one looking up my ip address on ip chicken always gets three different results.
More worrisome it that hackers got into my Wells Fargo account a week after the intrusion even though I changed all account #'s and pw plus notified bank. They also broke into paypal using my new account numbers.
Also, stuff like Facetime pops up on my computer without my clicking on it even though I'm using ethernet to connect. I've given up on Time Capsule because I'm told that's how the hackers hacked my computer so thoroughly duriung the intrusion.
    Thanks.

    Aubry,
why don't you send your sequences straight to Compressor first, encode your movies as MPEG 2 and AC3 audio and import all assets in DVD studio PRO?

  • What is the best cpu for Premiere Pro and autocad?

I am considering these three cpu's. My build has to run Premiere Pro CS6 and the latest Autocad (I know this a Adobe forum, but if any out there also run Autocad in addition to PP...let me hear from you and what your build is).
I am PP hobby enthusiast/student/want to eventually have video postproduction company in future. Right now autocad is 'bread and butter' part-time.
These three are in my price range...which would you choose for PP and why? (side comments about autocad suitability also appreciated)
    1. Core i7-3930K  Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W
    2. Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W
    3. Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W

Note that AutoCad is not an avanced software, it only uses one cpu thread (so if you have a fast solo processor that's all AutoCad makes use of) but the cpus mentioned above are the fastest cpus per single core. I don't know about the Premiere Pro i.e. what this program does in the regard of utilizing all cores and threads, but AutoCad for sure does not. So an AutoCad machine only needs a fast CPU, good memory and a graphics card that AutoCad knows how to make use of in 3D (if you are using AutoCad for 3D) but AutoCad is definitely not the program to consider for use in 3D modeling. AutoCad is still vector based program (and probably will continue to be in future, since there will always be some need for vector based design software) but Autodesk does have software that is not vector based like Inventor.
