What's the best option when the internal hard drive is full?

Hi all,
I am running an iMac 27" with a 2 TB hard drive, which is supported by a 5 GB external RAID for backup (Time Machine and Aperture Vault).
At the moment I have RAW masters located on the iMac in a special folder and linked into Aperture (referenced masters) and the processed JPEG or TIFF files managed within Aperture (library is on the internal drive).
Well, it finally happened and the hard drive is full, and I need to think about how to reorganize my files.
What would be your preferred scenario of organizing files, keeping in mind both speed/performance and safety/backup (i.e., the reason master files are on the iMac and not just on the RAID is because that gives me one more copy).
Ideas I have come up with:
- Get the internal drive upgraded to 3 TB
- Get an additional external hard drive for the master files
- Split the library and move the less used files/projects to an external drive, keep the others on the drive
- Try to move other stuff (e.g., music) to an external drive (not sure that would be enough)
- Keep masters only on the RAID disk
Any opinions, ideally backed up by experience, would be greatly appreciated. If you'd go for an external drive, I'd also like to hear what kind of drive you'd recommend (this iMac does not have Thunderbolt, it is from 2009).

The best option for your situation in my opinion would be to put the masters on an external drive as referenced masters and get a second external to back them up. This will move the masters off your internal drive freeing up space.
USB drives will be fine for this especially for the backup drive. If you can spring for FireWire so much the better.

Thanks for the advice. I have avoided iMovie Theater because that would soon use all of my free iCloud allowance (although that could be an option). I have been sharing to iTunes at 720p thinking that my picture using Apple TV would be better than Large. I see now that I could use about 30% less hard drive space by using Large instead. Do you think I will experience an annoying difference in picture quality?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive. But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

You can use SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner to accomplish that.
You'd need an external disk or mount your old internal in an enclosure.

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.

What is the best way to manage my hard drive?

Background - I have a 13" MacBook Pro with 250GB hard drive and recently I have had to delete or migrate files to external HDs to gain space. I spent last night doing just that. I also have two EHDs - a 2TB My Passport and a 3TB Seagate GoFlex Home WiFi capable. I do my backups to the SeaGate using Time Machine. My issue is that I currently only have about 38 GB available on the hard drive after making the moves last night.
I'll call this what it is - an ugly baby. In order to make room, I moved files to one or both EHDs so now I have multiple copies of my stuff but no organization. So a couple of questions...
1. How can I effectively and efficiently get my internal hard drive down to only about 100GB be used? What I would like to do is reduce the files and folders on my mac to the pictures and basic document files in my documents folder. I think I can do this by moving all music to an EHD which would free up more than 100GB on my macbook. I just am not sure how to do this and not affect my iPhone's iTunes etc.
2. I want to back up my info to a cloud, specifically pictures and important docs... I would be introducing a third way to get disorganized. What do I need to do to stay ahead of the curve.

Upgrade your MBP's internal boot drive to something larger, 250GB just doesn't cut it.
A 2010 machine, I wouldn't bother with the expense of a SSD, a 7,200 750GB or 1TB should do nicely and you can install it yourself or have a local geek do it.
You might as well max the RAM too, if your in AppleCare it won't violate it as long as nothing is broken.
Carbon Copy Cloner is the preferred method to clone your entire OS X + Recovery HD partition (no BootCamp, use WinClone 3 for that) to a external GUID OS X ext J drive, hold the option key and boot from the clone, then reverse clone onto the new internal drive.
OtherWorld computing, MacMall and Crucial.com are recommended for compatibility, videos and what not.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
don't forget to clean the cooling fins behind the fans, they get clogged with dust and overheat the machine.

However, I contacted apple support and they said if I try to upgrade the hdd myself, then the warranty of the macbook would be void. I am from India . I currently have a Macbook Pro mid 2012,13 inch.

How to undo the file sharing in your internal hard drive in Macbook?

I thought the way to lock and unlock a file would also be the same procedure when locking the internal hard drive?
Basically what happened is that I have an icon on my desktop (top-right corner) where I can access my applications, home, etc.
I thought I could privitize my whole entire system if I just change the file sharing into "Read Only (Drop Box)" status.
So I right-click on the icon, then clicked "Get Info," then clicked the lock button then it asked me for my password to be able to make changes.
My fault was I made the "Home" and "Admin" to "Read Only (Drop Box) status and "Other Users" to "No Access" file sharing.
Now in result I cannot click on anything. All the applications are lock. Even the System Preferences.
Another problem I came across is that I tried to turn my MacBook on...and it would just stay on the white screen with the apple logo and it would just load for ever.
So overall, my whole entire mac system is locked, can't open anything and I cannot turn on my Mac.
I tried calling the Apple call support services. But my warranty has expired. I could pay for it, but I really do want to save.
I hope someone can tell me a good solution. Next time I'll make sure not to do experiments anymore and stick to what I know.

You need to do it as soon as you turn the computer back on. If you have a firmware password set on the computer, you'll need to know it and have a Mac OS X install DVD; if you don't have either and a firmware password is set, contact Apple.

Maxtor are good but so are Western Digital and Seagate. I have one of each.

What is the best way to wipe my hard drive for a clean install?

I've been having a lot of insane issues with my iMac like my Dock icons not staying, email messages showing in Mail but when I click on them I can't see any text, Spotlight finding emails and files that don't show on my hard drive, etc.

I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.

Boot to an Install CD.
Run Disk Utility (X) or Drive Setup (9).
Initialize the hard drive with the Write Zeroes or Zero all data option.
It takes a long time, do not plan on doing anything for a few hours.

Install any version of Mac OS, such as the one on the Installer CD. This allows the new recipient to see that your Mac still works, so it should not be immediately crushed.
Unless you have nuclear secrets on it, there is no need for 7x or 35x overwriting. After the Write Zeroes pass, your data is only recoverable to those who wish to disassemble it in a clean room with expensive special equipment.
For the extremely paranoid, there is always the "Hammer method":
Remove the hard drive.
Beat it to death with a hammer.
Remove the platters and use them to make a wind chime.
(Once opened, a Hard drive has a short time before the heads will crash and ruin some of the data, and possibly the heads themselves.)
Deleting all the files, which takes only a minute or two, only clears the Directory. It does not write over the data blocks. Simple programs like Norton Utilities can get the files back.

I have a 2013 Pro with the 256gig SSD. I have installed and uninstalled and moved files everywhere since I got the notebook. I am now starting to focus on my music production and was cleaning up my files and organizing folders for everything. 2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Please note that "cloning" a hard drive is not the same as replacing it. You clone the drive to preserve its contents (usually on the drive that will be the replacement). You still have to get into the MB, physically, take out the old drive and install the new one. There are plenty of web sites that tell you how to do this replacement. The details do vary depending on the vintage of your MB, so if that link is not for your model, try searching the web for instructions specific to your need. Or post back here with details about your Mac.
If Apple did agree to do this for you it would probably cost almost as much as a new MB. (And if you do buy a new MB, my local Mac store will do the data transfer as a bonus!)

Trying to find the best format for an external hard drive

I have a new iMac 20", and I am now converting an external hard drive I had on another computer to be compatible with this one. The ext. HD was formatted as NTFS, and I would like to make it much more easily read/write. I've tried using various tools to enable write support on the drive, but I'm giving up on that, instead opting that I just format the drive to something else.
Disk Utility doesn't really offer me a comprehensive comparison of UFS and Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or any of the OS Extended derivatives.
Since Everything is either:
a) Mac OS Extended
b) MS-DOS or
c) Unix File System
What are the differences between a) and c) and why would I choose UFS over the others? For the time being, I just want to set up the drive as a backup, but I may use it for more than that, since it has a Firewire connection to it, enabling much better performance than USB.

File system formats and partition map schemes are two different things.
OS X requires the Mac OS Extended (HFS+) file system formatting scheme. Details on file format schemes are in http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/FileSystem/Artic les/MacOSXAndFiles.html
ICBMs (Intel-chip-based Macs) require the GUID Partition Table scheme. Erasing. When you erase a volume, you delete the volume's file directory (when you erase a disk, you also destroy its partitions and directories); and, when you zero out the data, you write 0s and 1s to the disk and map out bad blocks.
So, I suggest using Disk Utility and erasing, zeroing out data, Mac OS X Extended, and the GUID partition scheme.
