What's the best way to format my mac

I want to clean up my mac to make it faster. I have backed up everything onto an external hardrive using time machine. Should I just start deleting everything manually or is there an easier way?

I suggest you ALSO keep a copy of your files on a regular storage drive in addiiton to TM, sometimes TM doesn't work.

what is the best way to format a novel w headers w/o changing the following pages. I've used Microsoft office initially, but publishing house uses a program called word perfect. I find that I have too many blank white pages no matter what i do! Have to fix pagination as well...Paul

When you start you are offered templates under 2 categories "Word Processing" and "Layout", choose wisely.
For header and footers yes, you will have to:
+Menu > Insert > Section break+ at the bottom of the last page of the section you wish to preserve.
Then you can change the next section and the 2 will stay different.
Please read the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf, you need to know a lot more than this if your novel is ever to hit the streets.

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

  • What's the best way to update my Mac with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

I've been getting prompts whenever I look at certain websites to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.  I'm skeptical as to responding to those prompts.  What is the best way to update my Mac Pro with the latest version of Adobe Flash Player?

You might also want to consider uninstalling Adobe Flash... I currently don't have it installed and haven't needed to install it.  Most websites are now coded in HTML 5 so that the iOS devices can actually visit them.  I can still watch YouTube videos et al.  About the only thing I can't do is play Flash games... but they're a resource hog anyways.
Try going without for a day or two and see just how many sites you visit no longer require it.  A lot of people keep it installed out of habit, not out of necessity.  If you have Flash installed, visit a site and it's out of date, it will tell you to update your Flash.  What it won't do is tell you is that had Flash not been installed, it would have used the HTML 5 code instead.  Think about it... if an iOS device can't run Flash at all... it can't visit this site if it were written only to use Flash.  What site would eliminate such a huge portion of their market base?  You'd be surprised at how many sites use HTML 5.  Uninstall Flash and see for yourself.

  • What is the best way to back up MAC and of office 2010

I just lost my hardware. Lost all my files from 6 months of heavy work.
I now will start from zero and would like to use the best as possible Back-up solution for my Mac Air.
My question is what is the best tool for it: I cloud? Time Machine?
The point is that I do have most of my files at Office (Powerpoint, Excel and Word for Mac). What is the best solution for office?
    Thx.

It's less a question of the best tool than of how many tools and backups.
Surely, Time Machine is fine for one type of backup. A second backup should be a full clone of your current system. A third backup is an incrementally updating backup for the clone. The fourth is a backup you put in a fireproof safe or in a bank safe deposit box.
Backups should be made on regular schedules. Time Machine updates hourly. One should be a weekly update. The one you store away should be a monthly update.
Choose a final strategy that works best for you and provides adequate security for your data. Remember, you can never have too many backups.

  • What is the best way to migrate one mac to another

    Hello All:
Tomorrow my new iMac arrives.  I want to migrate all of my current settings, applications and data from my MacBook Pro (2007) over.  I am currenty running OSX 10.6.7.  I run Time Machine onto a USB drive.  I have heard that you can either use Migration Assistant via direct Firewire or Time Machine.  Which is the best or does it even matter?
    Thanks.

Absolute disaster trying to use this Migration assistant! First of all it caught me in a loop because the OS on the new computer was not the same version as the old computer. Only after backing out of Migration Assitant a couple times did I finally get the message that I had to bring my new iMac up to date with the OS. Fine I did that thinking that perhaps that was the reason it wasn't sinking with the Firewire. No go. Still doesn't recognize the Firewire. So haw about two up-to-date computers and USB. It seemed to update users but I sure can't see any difference. And there is no longer a Mac HD icon on the desktop. How about moving 500 GB via WiFi. Sure except around the 3/4 mark I'm told there is a problem with my WiFi. Well, everything else is working. So now I'll try a Drobo restore routine. Migration Assistant is garbage. After 25 years working w/Macs this is equaling at least the biggest wste of my time of all of the OS's of the past.

  • What is the best way to format and hold amount value?

dollarformat or numberformat...which is best to format amount
    value or currency value?.

    Adomacro,
dollarformat is a quick numberformat specifically for
formatting dollar and cent values. You can use numberFormat, but
why? numberFormat is more versitile for ALL number formatting (not
    just dollar and cents).
    Hope that helps.

  • What is the best way to connect a mac book air to 27 inch acer display?

I am currently connecting through a USB docking station and the monitor flickers.  I am unable to view a slideshow on the display in Keynote due to VRAM possibly being low.  Slideshow works fine on the Air.

I want to buy a hard disk (not a NAS device) and plug it into my Airport Extreme in order to share data between two Mac computers, and to stream iTunes content to my Apple TV.
One option is to purchase a hard drive (say, a 2TB Hitachi G-Technology drive) and connect it to the USB port on the back of the Apple Extreme. The other option is to purchase a drive with an ethernet connection (say, a 2TB Lacie drive) and connect it to an ethernet port on the Apple Extreme.
In the second case what you'd have actually is a NAS. Apple's AirPort routers aren't known for fast file sharing. The NAS option might be faster.
Is either option better for streaming movies from the hard drive to my Apple TV?
I could be wrong, but an AppleTV may not be able to access content directly from a network drive. It may require that a Mac serve as an intermediary.

  • What is the best way to image a Mac HD?

I have a school with about 60 new iMacs. I would like to create one master image and push out to all the other computers using a external network hard drive. I am installing iWork and BootCamp with XP and a few other programs, all with valid licences. I do this eveyday with Windows using Symantec and Acronis products, but have been unable to find one for the Mac. I woudl prefer something to buy that has support if possible. Thanks for any help.

  • What is the best way to ship a Mac Pro from Australia to New York

I am migrating from Melbourne Australia to New York next month and naturally, i want my Mac Pro to come along for the ride.
Has anyone expereienced a move like this?  Who would you reccommend as a transport company?

Computers are a commodity. They have no art value. We can become very attached to them, but they are interchangeable.
I recommend you seriously consider selling your computer in Australia, and buying a new one when you get to New York. I can't see shipping 65 lb chassis halfway around the world.
The only part that is at all delicate is the Hard drives. Once the heads are parked, they are not that delicate any more. As long as you pack the rest so that it cannot rattle in the box, it will be fine.
Apple uses styrofoam as the packing material inside the corrugated box because it absorbs crushing energy by deforming. It is not an accident that it is also used inside bike and motorcycle helmets. Resilient foam (like a couch cushion) is springy, but does not absorb or dissipate the crushing energy of an accident or a fall.

  • What is the best way to import and edit a large amount of footage?

    Hello Apple world,
As a newbie to Final Cut 10 I have a question regarding best ways to import footage. I'll give you a quick run down.
I have a 150 gig of gopro footage that I just hit 'import' to recently (from my external HD), it took around 10 hours to process it all.
Its all under one event, but then somewhat organised into dates etc. But it is very slow. I imported it all at once because it was all footage from the last 6 months of my Whistler/states/fiji trip and want to make a movie out of it, using clips from all over the time, not just in chronological order.
I have the latest mac book pro, 4 gig ram,2.4 GHz i7, 750 hard drive, with nothing else on the computer.
Ive read about creating proxy media, after ive imported, but am still somewhat confused as to the benefit. Does it create duplicates? that will fill up my pretty large HD as it is!
Can you suggest any ways that might make my laptop run a bit faster? Should i delete and work directly from external HD etc etc?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance
    Harlee

    Hello,
I've just finished shooting what I am considering to be my directorial masterpiece.  Shot it on the Canon 5D (1080p, 24fps), and the footage looks amazing.  Now I am ready to start editing and have been using premiere lately, but I have yet to figure out the proper pipeline.  I want to know the best way to retain resolution before I delve into this project.
    My questions:
    1)  What is the best way to start a new project and import the footage without having to render whilst editing, so as to retain all resolution and originality of the source footage?
    2)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to export this same footage once editing is complete so as to retain that crisp 1080p for which the 5D is so recognized?
    3)  What is the best way/ codec/ format to import and export/ render between premiere and after effects?  I am speaking mostly of vfx and color correction.  I also have some 30fps footage that I intend to slow down in AE and then import into premiere.
I know this is pretty broad, but as a solo filmmaker I really need someone's guidance.  I rarely ever finish my films with the same, crisp look as the footage.  I need pipeline help, and really appreciate it!
    1. Follow the advice above. Also use the Media Browser to import the footage in case you have spanned media files. Import files with the Media Browser.
    2. It largely depends on what you wish to ouput to: Blu-ray, web, etc. This FAQ gives the best answer: What are the best export settings?
    3. Use the Replace with Adobe After Effects Composition function.

  • What's the best way to connect the audio out of my Mac to my stereo receiver?

I want to listen to my mp3 collection through my home theatre stero receiver.
I have 2 audio interfaces that I connect to my mac through USB and Firewire: Digi Design Mbox mini and Maudio ProFire 610.
I've tried going from a headphone 1/8'' connector from the headphone out of my mac to rca connected to the aux (or whatever) of my stereo.
I've tried using a 1/4'' adapter on the 1/8'' to go from my mbox mini's headphone output to the rca aux on my stereo.
The problem is I'm hearing distortions that sound like clipping, or static, crunchiness on certain frequencies in a lot of my mp3's that shouldn't be there.
I listen to lots of music, and a lot of it uses distortion, like shoegaze, drone etc but I know what I'm hearing is unnatural.
I even hear these flaws when I listen to headphones through the headphone out of my mbox.
Page 2 on this instruction manual says I should be able to go from the monitor outs to my stereo. The monitor outs are 1/4 inch out so I figured I would need a 1/4 inch to rca cable.
I got this one from monster thinking it should work. No dice.
So my question is, what is the best way to connect my mac to my stereo? I need to avoid these distortions and flaws in the audio i'm hearing or I will go nuts.
Why might I be getting these clipping distoritons?
    any advice would be fantastic

It depends on how close the receiver is to the iMac. If it's just a few feet away you need at cable like:
    http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-THINTOSMIN6-Toslink-Digital-Optical/dp/B00016 W6Y6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1316096392&sr=8-2
However if the receiver is across the room or the house you would be best to enable Air Play, this enables you to wirelessly connect the receiver to the iMac. You will need the above cable and an Airport Express. If you are not familiar with Air Play navigate to:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/airplay/
I have been using it for quite some time and find it great. If you are not familiar with the Airport Express here is the link to it:
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/
You can even find refurbished ones on Apples website for about $79.

what is the best way to back up photos and videos to a dvd from iPhoto, not in iPhoto format but just in jpeg format to access on either windows or mac

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.
