What's the best way to implement LOVs in OBIEE?

Hi All,
Does anyone have any good ideas on how to go about implementing LOVs in OBIEE?
At the moment we have created reports and dashboard prompts from the relevant SQL views which report off an Oracle EBS database. Our problem is that when we create a dashboard prompt from this view, that the generation of the LOV will take an extremely long time as it would need to run the whole query and do a distinct on the relevant column, before the LOVs are returned to the user.
I'd like to find out what possible solutions exist to implement and manage LOVs in OBIEE, and which is the preferred and recommended approach?
Thanks,
Lance

Hi Lance,
I can think about two things which are indexing and using a dimensional model rather than OLTP.
Are the views based on huge transaction tables? Are the LOVs based on transactional dates.
Thanks,
Manoj.

  • What is the best way to implement writable many-to-many relations

    As everyone knows, the many-to-many associations provided by BC4J are quite good to read many-to-many associations, but they are not able to write such associations.
    There are other solutions using composite associations or cascading-delete foreign keys, but as I was tought now, they are also quite problematic. See thread Internal error: Entity.afterRollback.status_dead   -- What does this mean? for more details.
    So I ask you: What is the best way to implement writable many to many associations? Do you really have to manage them "by hand"?
    Thanks for your ideas

  • What is the best way to implement Spiceworks and get started?

    Yes this is the most basic question of all, how do you use it?I did search for some articles but there are tutorials that are 6 years old, or maybe a year or two old. I want to make sure I'm up to date on best practice.I've got a network of 8 PCs and 6 laptops or so as well as phones and tablets (if SW cares).I've got this community user which I created long ago when I first tried to test SW.My question is, what is the best way to get SW going? I mean, do I create a new user that is specific to the company? Is the community user different from the SW admin user? I want to separate my community user (which is me personally) from any local business/network implementation of SW.Do I need a server to run this or is something run on each workstation? Does each computer need something done to it so SW can work right?Basically I just need to...

  • What is the best way to implement a scheduled task?

    Dear kind sirs...
    let us say I have a JSF application, and it is working perfectly fine...
    I need the method like
    void DoProcessing()
    *// processing code here*
    to execute everyday at 7AM...
    so what is the best way to do it? I need this to be part of the JSF application... not in a different process... and I want the method to execute at that exact time every day.
    and what are the main steps to do that?
    best regards

    Dear Mr. Chris...
    the reason I am asking about this is because we are required to provide reports for a number of customers by email every day... each report requires retrieving values from a DB.
    I made a test few hours ago about making a thread sleeps and check the time when it wakes up, it works, no problem about that...
    I placed a thread in the servlet context and started it... and it kept working for about an hour writing in the log every 5 seconds... so I guess the idea works...
    but do you think that this way of implementing the scheduler is ok? for I have not done it before and I don't know the cons of such a method.
    thanks for any advice or comment.

  • What is the best way to implement Carousel i.e. web part in a site page on office 365 site?

    We can implement the Carousel web part in many ways like content By Query Web Part , jquery (nivo) plugin or content search web part etc. But among these which one is the best way to implement to get best performance of the page?
    Thanks

    content search web part always provides best performance because it uses the search. only consideration you need to take is, it does not display the changes immediately and you need to wait for the incremental crawl to happen.

  • What is the best way to implement default values stored in a DB table?

    [JHeadstart 10.1.3 build 78]
    [JDeveloper 10.1.3 SU4]
    We are struggling on how to best implement default values that are stored in a DB table. What we have is a database table with (CODE_TYPE, TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DEFAULT_VALUE) as columns. This way the application administrator can administer default values himself/herself. Now we need to find the best way to set these table supplied default values in new rows. Globally we are aware of two ways:
    - override create() method on VO
    - probably create a View Object on top of the database table with default values (we are capable of transposing the table and return exactly one row with a column for each default value) and use JHeadstarts item property 'Default Value'.
    We prefer the latter, since this is more declarative, however we struggle with the EL expression needed to indicate the default value.
    If we have a VO named "DefaultValues" with a SELECT on a view on top of our database table (transposed) returning exactly one row, let us say:
    SELECT orglanguage, orgtype, orgstatus [...]
    FROM v_default_values
    --> returning exactly one row
    and we want an EL expression on an item that needs the value from orglanguage. What will the EL expression be? Something like:
    #{data.DefaultValuesPageDef.currentrow.orglanguage.inputValue}? We tried several things but they do not work. A static default value works, but every EL expression so far does not. We know that using "data" can be dangerous, but thought JHeadstart takes care of preparing the other Page Definitions, so it might be possible when you use JHeadstart.
    Or is overriding the create() method the preferred way? Or do we have to look at a Managed Bean for our default values that we refer to from EL (let us say MyAppDefaultValuesBean) and in that case: how do you associate a Managed Bean with a VO?
    Any help would be appreciated. Apart from these default values, things are going rather well in this first J2EE/JHS project for us!
    Toine

    Steven,
    Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately whatever we try, we cannot get it to work. We started looking at the second option (since we do need default values also in table lay-out new rows). We created a DefaultValues ViewObject, added it to the Application Module, added an EL expressiona to the Default Display Value property (replacing your ending ")" with a "}" offcourse ;-)), ran the JAG so that a page definition was generated for DefaultValues and we managed to get it prepared when loading for example the Organisation's jspx page. However no default value appears in a new row (not in Form, not in Table layout).
    I then created a quick application on top of the HR schema, added a DefaultValues ViewObject using one calculated attribute (set Salary fixed to 1000), added the EL expression to the Salary Default Display Value property in the Employees Group, made sure the DefaultValuesPageDef is prepared by adding it to the parameter section and I see it getting prepared. I also see a managed Bean is created in the Employees-bean.xml.
    In the Embedded OC4J log we see:
    16:01:01 DEBUG (JhsPageLifecycle) -executing onCreate
    16:01:01 DEBUG (JhsPageLifecycle) -CreateEmployeesDefaultValues bean found, applying default values to new row
    2006-08-02 16:01:01.825 WARNING [ADFc] Warning: No Method onCreateEmployees and no actionBinding CreateEmployees found.
    Is it this warning we should be worried about? Since no default value is created.

    We do not understand what is wrong and why the default values do not get created in the new rows (and it is taking us far too much time). Any chance the EL expression is still wrong? It is a shame that any syntax errors in EL expressions are not visible in some logfile. It looks like when EL expressions are wrong, they are ignored instead of raising an error...

  • What's the best way to implement an array on OOP?

    Hello,
    In the attached image, I do a database query with one query string. It opens the connection, makes the query, and closes the connection. The output array is scanned for certain conditions later.
    If I have 10 queries I could simply make an array of queries and make an array of replies. Then I could decompose the output array in a for loop and run my evaluations.
    In OOP however, I find myself wanting to make each query as an object, to encapsulate it. That is a problem though, because the database resides in a server in another building across town, and the connection to it is slow. So multiple queries take too long.
    How do I approach this in OOP?

    Or yet another approach...
    Use "Composition" pattern to say the connection is a part of the query and implement the connection class using the Singlton pattern.
    The Connection method that crates the connection would only make the connection when an open is invoked and the connection does not alreday exist.
    So your queries are an array like what seems natural (is that "Cohesion").

  • What is the best way to implement CSS UDP service keepalive?

    I would like a way to do this without changing the application. Below I found one way to do this in this forum but can one do this? I didn't see a way in the css scripting language to check for the ICMP error.
    Is it possible to write such CSS script:
    - to send UDP traffic to UDP port on server,
    - if there is no answer -service is active,
    - if ICMP port unreachable is received - server is declared down.
    If this isn't possible, is there another way to do this?
    Thanks
    Linda

    Linda,
    the above is not possible.
    The solution is to send real application data and inspect the response.
    You can do this by sniffing a request from a client directly to a server, and capturing the response as well.
    Extract the data portion - beyond the udp header, and convert to a chain of hex numbers.
    Use those numbers in the socket send function with the raw option.
    You can find an example of such a script on your CSS by doing a
    sho script ap-kal-dns
    To analyse the response, you can also use socket receive with the raw option.

  • What is the best way to double buffer in this case and how to do it....

    currently I have
    public class Frame1 extends JFrame{
    //inside this class I call up circle class, rectangle class, etc.... to draw
    }I am making a "paint" program, and I have individual classes to handle the paint methods heres an example:
    abstract public class Shape {
        public Shape() {
        public abstract void draw(Graphics g, Color c, int x, int y, int width,int height);
    }and then....
    public class Circle extends Shape{
        public Circle() {
        public void draw(Graphics g, Color c, int oldx, int oldy, int newx, int newy) {
            g.setColor(c);
            g.drawOval(Math.min(oldx, newx), Math.min(oldy, newy), Math.abs(oldx - newx), Math.abs(oldy - newy));
    }There is also a Rectangle class, line class.... etc! So my question to you is the following... what is the best way to implement double buffer in the individual classes? And how to do it?? And also.... the drawings should be kept inside a jPanel.
    Any bit of help is much appreciated Thank you!!

    You don't need to do double-buffering. Swing
    components are double-buffered by default. Just make
    sure you override paintComponent() and not paint().
    And even if you had to, why would there be any
    difference in implementation for your classes whether
    they paint to on- or off-screen graphics?I need to override paintComponent()? what if I don't...
    I am using JBuilder2005 and they automate somethings for me. So thats how they did it when they created the application they did this....
    public class Frame1 extends JFrame{
    /*** all my code here***/
    public class Application1 {
        boolean packFrame = false;
         * Construct and show the application.
        public Application1() {
            Frame1 frame = new Frame1();
            // Validate frames that have preset sizes
            // Pack frames that have useful preferred size info, e.g. from their layout
            if (packFrame) {
                frame.pack();
            } else {
                frame.validate();
            // Center the window
            Dimension screenSize = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
            Dimension frameSize = frame.getSize();
            if (frameSize.height > screenSize.height) {
                frameSize.height = screenSize.height;
            if (frameSize.width > screenSize.width) {
                frameSize.width = screenSize.width;
            frame.setLocation((screenSize.width - frameSize.width) / 2,
                              (screenSize.height - frameSize.height) / 2);
            frame.setVisible(true);
            try {
                jbInit();
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                ex.printStackTrace();
         * Application entry point.
         * @param args String[]

  • What is the best way to create a bookmark for a returning user??

    Hello all... hello again Steve...I am back with another question- what is the best way to implement a bookmark system so returning users can pick up where they left off in an AW lesson? I have tried the usual internet searches, always do, but the few samples/answers I have found were AW5, not much help...
    I have a dozen or so maps attached to my framework, I would like a user to return to the last map he viewed before closing. (My AW is communicating fine with an Access database, so if passing a variable to Access and then back to AW when the lesson starts is on the right track, let me know...) If the answer here is too complicated, maybe nudge me in the right direction and I will dive back in.
    Thanks in advance to anyone who has some guidance, I really do appreciate it!
    Terry

    Try this outline, see if it helps ...
    Grab a reference to the Map as you enter it, then save that to the database when you leave.
    You want something that will give you the equivalent to a page number - if you have 7 maps hanging off the Framework, and the user is in the 6th map when he exits, you want to save the number 6.
    There are scores of ways to do this, but probably the easiest is just to attach a calc to each map that has this code
    (I don't have Authorwar handy to check syntax, so you should check!)
    BookMarkPage = ChildIDtoNum(IconParent(IconID), IconID) <-- tells Authorware to return the "page number" of the current map
    Save BookMarkPage to your Access database on exit .
    On return, read the bookmark back into BookMarkPage, ask the user if he wants to return to bookmark. If yes, use a calculated navigation that uses
    ChildNumToID(@the name of your Framework or it's ID, BookMarkPage)
    Note that you could wrangle something similar by saving the IconID of your Map, or the IconTitle, but both of these can break if you ever update your file by adding or removing pages, renaming them etc. With this method, all you need is a simple page count check that ensures that you are not trying to nav to a page number that does not exist (use IconNumChildren).

  • What is the best way to verify default heap size in Java

    Hi All,
    What is the best way to verify default heap size in Java ? does it vary over JVM to JVM . I was reading this article http://javarevisited.blogspot.sg/2011/05/java-heap-space-memory-size-jvm.html , and it says default size is 128 MB but When I run following code :
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    int MB = 1024*1024;
    System.out.println(Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()/MB);
    It print "870" i.e. 870 MB.
    I am bit confused, what is the best way to verify default heap size in any JVM ?

    Hi Kayaman,
    Sorry but I don't agree with you on verification part, Why not I can verify it ? to me default means value when I don't specify -Xms and -Xmx and by the way I was testing that program on 32 bit JRE 1.6 on Windows. I am also curious significant difference between 128MB and 870MB I saw, do you see anything obviously wrong ?That spec is outdated. Since Java 6 update 18 (Sun/Oracle implementation) the default maximum heap space is calculated based on total memory availability, but never more than 1GB on 32 bits JVMs / client VMs. On a 64 bits server VM the default can go as high as 32gb.
    The best way to verify ANYTHING is to address multiple sources of information and especially those produced by the source, not some page you find on the big bad internet. Even wikipedia is a whole lot better than any random internet site IMO. That's common sense, I can't believe you put much thought into it that you have to ask in a forum.

  • What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

    Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
    The physical plan is this:
    For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
    When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.
    For my hard drives, I'm installing a 160GB Intel X25-M into the first drive bay

    using one of MaxUpgrades' 'MaxConnects' kits. I will use this drive for the operating system software and my applications and their libraries.

    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
    which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
    Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
    And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
    Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
    And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?
    thanks for the help. I want to do this right.

    oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
    So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!
    Thanks for the help. Like I say, I knew there was useful guidance hanging on some limb within your personal kit, (otherwise referred to as your mind)!
    Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
    Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
    Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.
    thanks Hatter. I'll let you know how things go, including what happens with the SSD. I don't have speed test software so I won't be able to track it's performance like that guy in the post you gave me did...

  • What is the best way of dealing with an "implicit coercion" of an array to a sprite?

    Hello everyone!
         With continued help from this forum I am getting closer to having a working program. I look forward to being able to help others like myself once I finish learning the AS3 ropes.
         I will briefly explain what I am trying to achieve and then follow it up with my question.
    Background
         I have created a 12 x 9 random number grid that populates each cell with a corresponding image based on each cell's numeric value. I have also created a shuffle button that randomizes the numbers in the grid. The problem I am running into is getting my button-click event to clear the current images off the grid in order to assign new ones (i.e. deleting the display stack objects in order to place news ones in the same locations).
    Question
         My question is this: what is the best way to handle an implicit coercion from an array to a sprite? I have pasted my entire code below so that you can see how the functions are supposed to work together. My trouble apparently lies with not being able to use an array value with a sprite (the sprite represents the actual arrangement of the grid on the display stack while the array starts out as a number than gets assigned an image which should be passed to the sprite).

    ===========================================================================
         Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Rothrock,
         Thank you for the reply. Let me address a few things here in the hopes of allowing you (and others) to better understand my reasoning for doing things in this manner (admittedly, there is probably a much better/easier approach to what I am trying to accomplish which is one of the things I hope to learn/discover from these posts).
         The elements inside my "imageArray" are all individual graphics that I had imported, changed their type to movie clips using .Sprite as their base class (instead of .MovieClip) and then saved as classes. The reason I did this was because the classes could then be referenced via "getDefinitionByName" by each cell value that was being passed to it. In this grid every number from 1 to 9 appears randomly 12 times each (making the 108 cells which populate the grid). I did not, at the time (nor do I now), know of a better method to implement for making sure that each image appears in the cell that has the corresponding value (i.e. every time a cell has the value of 8 then the custom graphic/class "skin8" will be assigned to it so that the viewer will be able to see a more aesthetically pleasing numerical representation, that is to say a slightly more fancy looking number with a picture behind it). I was advised to store these images in an array so that I could destroy them when I reshuffle the grid in order to make room for the new images (but I probably messed up the instructions).
         If the "drawCell" function only returns a sprite rather than the image array itself, doesn't that mean that my "eraseCells" function won't be able to delete the array's children as their values weren't first returned to the global variable which my erasing function is accessing?
         As for the function name "drawCells," you have to keep in mind that a) my program has been redesigned in stages as I add new functionality/remove old functionality (such as removing text labels and formatting which were originally in this function) and b) that my program is called "Blanko."
         I will try and attach an Illustrator exported JPG file that contains the image I am using as the class "skin7" just to give you an example of what I'm trying to use as labels (although it won't let me insert it here in this post, so I will try it in the next post).
    Thank you for your help!

  • What is the best way to store data for this project?

    hey everyone,
    I have been subscribed to this for a while, not sure if I have ever actually asked anything though.
    I have a project on the go for myself/portfolio
    It is a booking sheet, where by I have a GUI that has a diary system of a day followed by time slots. This also has a date picker that can change the date of the booking sheet
    I want to be able to store mainly strings and ints,
    I need to be able to store, retrieve and on occasion change some data.
    I was looking at using something called JExcelAPI but I cant get that to work at all, I asked for assistance but was refered to here.
    what would be the best way to implement this data storage?

    Hey everyone,
    Back again,
    I got this this little snippet of code working but want to ask you guys for a little bit of help on it. if thats ok?

         Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
         String dataSourceName = "mdbTEST";
         String dbURL = "jdbc:odbc:" + dataSourceName;
         Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(dbURL, "","");
         // try and create a java.sql.Statement so we can run queries
         Statement s = con.createStatement();
         s.execute("create table TEST1234567 ( column_1 char(27), column_2 char(150), column_3 char(150), column_4 char(150), column_5 char(150), column_6 char(150))"); // create a table
         s.execute("insert into TEST1234567 values('"+date+"','"+a+"','"+b+"','"+c+"','"+d+"','"+e+"',)"); // insert some data into the table
         s.execute("select column_7 from TEST1234567"); // select the data from the table
         ResultSet rs = s.getResultSet(); // get any ResultSet that came from our query
         if (rs != null) // if rs == null, then there is no ResultSet to view
                    while ( rs.next() ) // this will step through our data row-by-row
              /* the next line will get the first column in our current row's ResultSet
              as a String ( getString( columnNumber) ) and output it to the screen */
                   System.out.println("Data from column_2: " + rs.getString(1) );
         s.execute("drop table TEST1234567");
         s.close(); // close the Statement to let the database know we're done with it
         con.close(); // close the Connection to let the database know we're done with it
    catch (Exception err)
         System.out.println("ERROR: " + err);
         err.printStackTrace();
    }there are more columns, but i cut this code down.
    my question is:
    I think I want a method with an if statement to see whether the table is created or not, if not create it, but how do I go about this? I have searched the API and google, but my brain is fried.
    Also do I always have to do the try/catch and have the code of Class.forname to Statement s in all methods that want to deal with the table?
