What's the best way to pull off this guitar trick?

I have a funky wah-wah guitar riff (about 5 seconds in length)and would like to have part of the riff play on the left speaker and the second half play on the right speaker—kind of flow between the two speakers organically. The riff was originally recorded in mono.
What would be the best way to accomplish this effect? Automation and pan the signal in real time? Or double the recording on two different tracks and the cut it up and pan so one half plays on the each speaker for half of the time? Any other ideas or tricks?
Basically, I’m just trying to get it to sound as “natural” as possible, if this makes any sense. I’m just curious how you guys would pull this off. Thanks for any tips.

hi
personally i'd do what you suggest: automate the pan of the gtr region/track.
i'd either use one of my midi controller knobs - assign it to pan and then do it in realtime... or just draw in the pan automation and play around with the nodes of the automation and smooth them out with the curve tool...
you could also use something like the stereo spread plugin and the tremolo and automate the later (depends on the rate of panning you want and the effect)
or use a pan plugin....i think destroyfx had one - but i can't find it now - something like autopan....which you can sync to the bpm.
hope that helps

What is the best way to switch off Daylight Saving Time for a DST enabled timezone?

I've been looking through the related classes and can't seem to find a way to disable DST in any timezone. Probably because they couldn't think of a good reason to want to know what the non-DST time was during DST.
However, you could easily compute the time without DST if that's what you need.

Not going to happen the way you want it to.
When you add a gift card balance to the Apple ID, it's available for the Apple ID.
Probably best to create unique Apple ID's for each... this will also make things easier in the future as purchases are eternally tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

• What is the best way to capture off of an AVCHD Camera in final cut?

Im kinda new to final cut pro so, please don't flame me. I was hoping to capture some extra footage on to my system through my AVCHD camcorder. And i want to know the best way to do so? Thanks for the answers.

I was not successful using mpegstreamclip for this. However, I found VoltaicHD from ShedWorx and it works great. Simply load all the clips you want to convert, assign a location and walk away. The result is beautiful HD .movs ready to be imported into FCP. I paid about $35 for it and it was well worth it.

• What's the best way to go about this scenario

Folks,
My application is composed of a lot of modules and each of these modules
both in terms of presentation
and functionality dynamically changes its behavior based on the context
associated with the requests. Now I want to offer on top of this an
Installer, thru which I can dynamically install new modules into my
application (both presentation and functionality layers), without a need to
re-start the server. And also install thru the same mechanism
customizations, which again would require dynamically adding more
configurations and components to the existing application modules.
What would be the best way in your experience to do that for the weblogic
server 6.1 environment?
thanks,

Hi,
The best possible way is to create a virtual servers in iWS6.x and configure the same, like what you had with 4.1 instance(configuration).

• What is the best way to set up this network?

I need a little help trying to find the best placement for my Apple routers. I've had mixed results with my current setup. It's an awkward setup because of where the Comcast router is at, and I can't move it (that is where Comcast decided to put the cable).... So I made a map of the setup including the walls and a little information that could hopefully help you help me!
http://public.iwork.com/document/?a=p283014970&d=Network_Setup.pages
I don't have the Time Capsule yet (it's been ordered, will be here Tuesday), so I suppose this is sort of a future diagram of what it will look like on that day. Minus the Time Capsule and you have what it looks like right now.
I bought the Airport Extreme in November and an Airport Express about a year and a half ago. The other Express I bought about two weeks ago.
I've read around and found that it's best if the Time Capsule is connected to the modem. I don't know if that's true or not, but in my setup, the Extreme is connected to the modem. My ISP is Comcast and I'm getting about 2 MB/sec at its peak.
I will be using the Time Capsule to back up a MacBook Pro and to share files (and use three ethernet ports to hook up the Apple TV, when used in that location, and a DVR and Blu Ray player. I can swap the locations of the Extreme and TC if necessary, so one of them will be using three ethernet ports). The Extreme will always have an external hard drive hooked up for more file sharing (and backup). Currently, the Extreme is not using any ethernet ports other than connecting to the modem.
Each Express is used currently to extend the network and for AirTunes/AirPlay. Nothing is using the USB port of either one, but one may sometimes use the ethernet.
The Extreme is broadcasting the the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks (b/g/n, so there is the normal network, a guest network, and a 5 GHz network).
SO... a lot of information there. I am only praying that there is someone who is willing to help me with this. Any suggestions/information is welcome, and I have *glanced* at Apple's networking support docs.. Let me know if I need to include anything else. Thanks in advance!

• My computer no longer supports PC applications and so I cannot open all the documents I have made with Microsoft Word.  What is the best way to deal with this?

         I have tried to use "Pages" and find it difficult.  However, I have not taken the time to go through the tutorials.  I'm used to Word and don't really want to take the time to learn another word processing program unless it is superior to Word.  Should I download Microsoft Word or should I learn how to use "Pages".  (To learn "Pages" will take me twice as long as it will take someone under 50).  What say you?

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
NeoOffice
Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
Keynote - presentation
Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

• I want to give away my old Mac Powerbook G4 to a friend, what is the best way to cleanly do this?

I want to give away my old Mac Powerbook G4 to a friend. Ideally I'd like to get my iphoto/itunes library deleted, but am afraid it will delete itself on my new MacBookPro as well.  This would be tragic.  Ideas?

If you used the migration assistment then your data will be okay.
I (and most of the people here) would strongly recommend you reformat the computer before giving it to anybody

• I want to sell my old macbook air, what is the best way to get my files and programs off of it?

I am going to sell my macbook air (2011) as I am replacing it with a macbook pro retina. I want to remove my files and programs from it before I sell it. What is the best way to go about this?

1) Perform a Time Machine or Cloned image backup of your system.
2) Test the Clone tomake sure it works, by booting to it (using the option key).
3) Boot to the Recovery Partition, then perform an erasure, followed by a reinstallation of the OS.
4) Shut off the Mac, after instllation and before the reboot. This will permit the next user to experience a "fresh out of the box" experience.
5) Use the Time Machine or Cloned image to migrate your apps, users & files to your new system, using SETUP ASSISTANT. Do not use Migration Assistant.

• What is the best way to leave the mini for the night?

What is the best way to switch off the ipod mini when I have finished with it?
My usual way to finish is to press the pause button then press the hold button. Is this safe?
I have heard that holding the pause/play button does a similar thing.
Any input is greatfully received.
Thanks.

I do the same thing. Press and hold pause until it sleeps and then switch hold on so I don't wake it up by accident. If you gasp don't use it for a couple of days it will go into deep sleep, and when you wake it up it will show the apple symbol... I think it is essentially rebooting.
I'm pretty sure the iPod normally just goes to sleep, rather than shuts down. This uses a little more power, but makes it faster when you go to use it (rather than waiting for it to boot up... like when you leave it for a few days). I think it's a reasonable compromise... give up a little battery life for that instant sweet tune gratification! And if you don't use it... it shuts down to preserve your battery. Smart pod!
Anyway, don't worry about it, what you are doing is perfectly safe for your iPod.

• HT2534 I have two class sets of iPad 2s and I would like to set up an iTunes account but don't want to put in my credit card information or individual students' information. What is the best way to set up class sets of iPads?

I am a K-6 tech teacher and just recieved two classroom sets of iPads. I'm wondering what is the best way to set up iTunes so that apps may be downloaded. I do not want to put my personal information in and I do not want students to put in their informtion either. Teachers want to be able to download free apps and when the school purchases iTunes gift cards, they would like to be able to use them. What is the best way to go about this?
Thank You!
Jess

Contact your IT person. They will help you with provisioning & setting up the iPads and getting apps on them and locking them down so students can only access certain settings and apps.
I have asked that this post get moved to iPad Enterprise as it is more approriate forum for your question (even though it is about schools))
Don't create an AppleID yourself and use it to put stuff onto the school iPads. You can't have more than 10 iPads to one iTunes account anyway.

• What is the best way to link 4 Airport units together wirelessly?

Hi guys,
I have a home with tick walls and creating  a decent wireless network was always a challenge. Recently I’ve decided to go for Apple products since I had a 4th gen airport express that worked well for airplay.
I bought a new time capsule, airport extreme, and one airport express. So in total I have 4 apple devices that I can use for creating a good wireless network. But what I found out is that having a full signal doesn’t mean that you will have good speeds, and speeds are really slow like 3Mb/s max on some places on the house.
The way that everything is configured at the moment is that I’ve configured the time capsule to be the main router and with the other three I’ve spreaded them over my house and selected the option to extend a wireless network using Airport Utility 6.2 on OSX.
What is strange that I have a full signal on almost all corners but very bad speeds. I did some research and found a tool that would show what the less crowded channel that you can choose for you wireless network (http://tools.meraki.com/stumbler)
In all my experience of extending a wireless network I’ve always used routers with DD-WRT so I could select the router to be a repeater bridge (and have two distinct networks, with different names) or link the routers with WDS linking them using the MAC address. In both cases all the documentation I’ve read recommended to set all routers of the same network with the same channel.
When I used the stumbler tool to see what channel my network was, since it was set as automatic because it’s the recommendation of Apple documentation, I found out that all 4 routers were operating on different channel on both 2.4Ghz frequencies and 5Ghz frequencies.
What is strange with the wireless network is that sometimes when it is really slow the speed of the internet, if I disconnect from the wireless network and connect again it gets a better connection, like I was connection to a closer router. But after sometime speeds get crappy again, like it changed to the far router again.
My question is, what is the best way to link all this routers together wirelessly? Is there a way to make them to be all on the same channel? Is that important?
On the Airport Utility 6.2 I don’t see any field that would make possible to link this routers using WDS. On the internet I found some documentation for configuring the routers with WDS with the Airport Utility 5.6.
All my routers are updated to the latest version (7.6.3). Please let me know how to proceed to have a decent network on my house. I wouldn’t mind having the network set with different SSIDs but it would be better to use the same network name on all the house.
Thanks in advance,
Tiago

At the moment it is configured like this.

My problem is that the signal its strong but speed isn’t. On Wifi stumbler I saw that every router is set to be on a different channel, they had to be the same no?
If its really slow if I disconnect and connect again from the network. It gets faster, like it connected to a closer router or something.
All are set to extend a wireless network.

T

• What's the best way to deal with floating point errors?

What's the best way to deal with the decimal number errors in Flex?
Lets say I have:
var number1:Number = 1.1;
var number2:Number = 1;
var result:Number = number1 - number2;
trace(result);
I get "0.10000000000000009".
What's the best way to deal with this so that i get the right result?
Using the trick: result = Math.round( result * Math.pow(10,13) ) / Math.pow(10,13); is not useful as such when using big numbers.
For example, If number1 = 100000000001.1, and number2 = 0.2, I get "100000000000.90001" as result. The previous rounding fixes rounding errors after 13th decimal, but here the first rounding errors come after 4 digits.
The toPrecision method in Number and NumberFormatter dont seem be of use by themselves because of the same reason.
So I'd have to check how big the number is, and then round the number based on that.
So far I've constructed a method that does that with logarithms like this:
public function floatFix(number:Number):Number{
          var precision:int = 14-Math.floor(Math.log(Math.abs(number))*Math.LOG10E);
          var precisionFactor:Number = Math.pow(10, precision);
          return Math.round(Number(number*precisionFactor))/precisionFactor;
It just seems rather odd that one would have to create and use something like that to just count 1.1-1; There's a lot of calculating in that method, and i'm guessing that having to use that in a loop could slow down a program quite a bit.
I think there really should be a pre-built method in flex for something like this, but I can't find any.
Anyone know any better/faster ways?

Use the application server database pooling services to create a datasource that can be access using JNDI.
Move the database access code to a Servlet so that a JSP submits a form to the Servlet that does the database access and packages the data into a bean which is passed to another JSP to be displayed.

• What is the best way to deploy/update custom security realm classes to WLS 6.0?

From the WLS 6.0 console, I see that I can specify the Java class that
implements my custom security realm but I am wondering what is the best way
to deploy/update this code. I don't see a way to do this from the console.
Does this mean that I have to manually copy the class files over that
implement my custom security realm?

Thanks Danut,
A jar file seems to be a good way to package it up but it sounds like it
still needs to be manually copied to each Weblogic server install directory
post-installation and whenever it is updated. I thought it would be nice to
be able to deploy/update the custom security realm by uploading it through
the Console just as you can with web applications and EJBs.

You have to have your Custom Realm class in the class path. I usually havea
jar file with all the Custom Realm classes and that jar I copy it in thelib
folder. Then I modify "startWebLogic.cmd" and I add to the classpath
".\lib\CustomRealm.jar"
set
CLASSPATH=.;.\lib\weblogic_sp.jar;.\lib\weblogic.jar;.\lib\CustomRealm.jar;

Be aware that in order to have you custom realm besides creating thecustom
realm using the console you also have to create a custom caching andchoose
that one as your default caching realm.
Here is how the security settings are looking in my "config.xml"
<CustomRealm Name="CustomRealm"
RealmClassName="Custom.appserver.weblogic.security.CustomRealm"/>
<CachingRealm BasicRealm="CustomRealm" CacheCaseSensitive="true"

• What is the best way to work with AVCHD 720 24p footage in FCE4.1?

Hi I have a Panasonic HMC-150 and I've been shooting 720 24p footage at 21 mbps transfer rate.
I was wondering what is the best way to work with this material in FCE 4.1? I see that in the easy set up menu they only have the option of 1440X1080i at 50 or 60 fps or 1920X1080i at 50 or 60 fps.
Also in the rates drop down menu there is only 50 or 29.97.
So I was wondering which is the best choice for 720 24p footage and will it look alright in any of them? Also is it possible to customize these settings?
And finally can you work with faster transfer rates (21mbps) in FCE?

Yikes, this is going to be tricky since FCE does not support native 24p editing.
The work around for some of us is that AVCHD material that is 24p is often recorded to disc at 60i using telecine, in which case it can be editing at 29.97 frames per second, and then detelecined afterward for final export at 23.98 fps. The problem is that I think your camera actually records real 24p - not 24p packed into 60i. When you import the material from the camera what does QuickTime report the framerate as?
