What's the best way to restore iTunes  library?

We have had to completely restore our PC and in the process had my iTunes library wiped out. I have a backup but its almost a year old. Is it not possible to restore the library from my iPhone (that's the impression based on other discussions I've read)?
How can I make sure that the phone isn't wiped clean when I connect it to the PC?

If using Windows, look for something called SharePod to get the music off of your phone and onto your computer.

  • What is the best way to move iTunes library to a different hard drive?

I have a MacBook Pro and recently removed my optical drive and replaced it with an internal hard drive so that I can have more storage. My iTunes library is on the original hard drive. I am getting close to running out of space on the original hard drive and would like to move my library to the new internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this? Thanks.

A re-iteration of what I posted earlier... If you let iTunes manage your music for you then copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the other drive.  Hold down the option key at the same time as starting iTunes. It will present you with a window, one of the options being to open a different iTunes library.  Navigate to the iTunes folder on the other drive and let it open the library.itl file in the folder there.  In all likelihood it should open it with no problem and you will not see any difference between when you had it on your first internal drive.  If you get info on a track and look at summary you will see it is now referencing media on the other drive.

  • I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?

I am trying to rebuild my iPhoto library and noticed my backup contains aliases (pointers?) and not the actual file. What's the best way to rebuild my library?
    Facts:
In moving to a new iMac, I copied the iPhoto library to an external HDD assuming that I would point the new iMac to the backed up iPhoto Library
All worked fine when I pointed the new library but noticed that some folders contained aliases and not the original file. So when I attempt to open that photo it can't find it because the alias is pointing to another drive.
I do have all original photos from a couple of external HDDs. In the folders titled, "Originals" (from older versions of iPhoto) and "Masters" (from current iPhoto)
I'm thinking I can create a new folder and drop the original files and make that my new iPhoto library. Is there a better way to rebuild my library? I do not want to create any future aliases.
Thanks in advance for any help!

do you have a strongly recommended default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a referenced library - you have unchecked that option?
It sounds like you have a referenced library and are now experiancing one of the very siginificant drawbacks of a referenced library and one of the many reasons they are strongly not recommended
Also note that iPhoto '11 may use alises in the originals folder as part of the upgrade
It is important that we understand exactly what you have and what is not sorking - what error messages you are getting
You must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure of content of the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it  --  and you can not rebuild yoru librtary - only iPhoto ir iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a library unless you are a SQL programmer and understand the structure that iPhoto uses

I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

  • What is the best way to restore the entire contents of Mac HD?

After installing Snow Leopard my iMovie 6 project went haywire. As I found that others had the same problem, I backed up Mac HD with TM, and then re-installed Leopard using the erase procedure. After that I couldn't access my TM backups via TM, so I copied it to the Mac HD folder. This didn't work out too well, as I had to manually restore various applications and libraries. I then found out you can access the backups via TM by pressing Control, click. So I deleted almost all the files I copied and I'm ready to re-install the entire folder Mac HD via TM. Now it asks me for a folder's name or to create a new folder. I can restore it to the existing Mac HD folder, as a separate folder within it, but then it will be like the previous attempt I made to copy it. What is the best way to do it? Should I create a new Mac HD folder and try to delete the one that came with Leopard? Can it be done like that? Any help will be appreciated.

I posted my question prematurely. I should have read the manual first. I did contact Apple Support, and they walked me through the restore process - it's so simple if you know what you are doing that it is embarrassing. I just didn't know where the Utilities section was - it was right there in the top bar. So now I have my computer the way I like it. I guess Snow Leopard is not for me until they fix iMovie 6.

  • What is the best way to backup iTunes on external HD

    Hello there
I wish to backup my iTunes on an external HD. I'm aware that I should move the iTunes folder in its entirety over to the external HD so everything remains the same.
However, when I have new iTunes added in my library in my MacBook, what is the best way to add and backup those new iTunes in the external drive? Can I just do a drag and drop for those new iTunes files into the iTunes folder in the external HD?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, if you don't want to clone the whole drive, you can pick and choose the files. If there is stuff already on the external drive, just be sure to deselect the button that tells CCC to remove any files not on the source drive. In other words, you want CCC to simply add more files to the external or update the ones that have changed. You do not want it to remove any.
CCC is a free download by the way. SuperDuper is a free download but the free version does not allow incremental backups, only a full complete backup which means losing what is already on the backup drive.

  • What's the best way to transfer iTunes from my mac to my android

I have tried everything and researched until I am exhausted. I tried android file transfer. My device cannot be recognized by my mac. I tried Kies and cannot figure out how to install it on my phone although I have it on my Mac. I transferred music via google play and it messed up my library and din't transfer playlists. What's the best way? How can I get my Mac to recognize my device and please don't day change USB stings as I cannot find anything resembling that.

    Copy the entire itunes folder.

  • What is the best way to move a library?

What is the best way to move my iphoto library from this computer to an external HD? And then what is the best way to remove it from this computer?

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.  Drag the iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the EHD,
When the copying is completed launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and open the library on the EHD.
Once you've confirmed that the move was successful and the EHD library is working OK you can drag the library in your Pictures folder to the Trash bin in the Dock and empty it.

  • What is the best way to get iTunes running on my Windows 7 64 bit system without installing it on my Windows 7 64 bit system?

I had iTunes installed on XP before upgrading my system and with all the install and uninstall issues I don't want to go through the same thing with Windows 7.
So, I'm looking for a way to get iTunes running on my system without installing it (like maybe in a Virtual OS on VirtualBox or VMWare.)
Something that I can easily restore and/or repair (Windows 7 Restore Points/backup options are not viable because they restore EVERYTHING to the state they were in when they were created.)
    TYIA
Any suggestions will help as to the best way of doing this.

LOL Yeah, right, that's very funny...
I did that on XP so I know better now!
Here is just 1 example of many:
On XP the uninstall wouldn't work so I coudn't upgrade iTunes.  In order to fix this without Re-Installing XP, I had to delete iTunes and then manually remove it from the registry and from Add/Remove programs before I could Install the new version.  Eventualy it did work after 1 and a half days of repairs...
I'm not going through the same type of problems on Windows 7 that just simply waste my time!

  • What is the Best Way to Transfer iTunes to Another Computer?

    Hi everyone!
Okay, I was wondering what the best way is to transfer an iTunes library. I have my current iTunes library on Windows XP on a PC and I wish to move the entire thing to my new, Windows Vista Laptop. The iTunes version on the PC is 7.6 (I do not wish to update if at all possible)and I have not downloaded iTunes 8 to the Laptop, which has no idea what an iPod or iTunes is.
You guys have always helped me in the past, so I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance!

Awww, com'on you guys. It's been 4 or 5 days, and no one has gotten back to me...
Can anyone give me a link that has any info? Thanks again.

  • What is the best way to setup iTunes with my current configuration?

I currently have an iPhone 5 and a new iPad. My wife has the iPhone 4S. I do all the syncs (even my wifes) on the same Windows 7 machine. She has a different apple ID than I do and I share one apple ID accross my iPhone and iPad.
I have a Windows Home Server 2011 box that stores all my photos and music files. I am able to connect to the box from the Windows 7 machine without issue. I have several media diretories. One of the directories contains all my iTunes music and another seperate directory contains all my photos.
Here is the question. If I want to sync my iPhone 5 and my new iPad so that I download all the music files and photos how should I setup iTunes? How should I sync my wifes iPhone so she gets all the Photos and music files? One of my chief concern is being able to automatically sync apps and  "new" photos taken from either phone back to my file server photo directory.
