What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
Macbook Black (wife)
Macbook Pro 15" (me)
Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.

  • What is the best way to setup premiere sequence for export when mixing 24fps and 23.976fps for final

    What is the best way to setup a premiere sequence for export when mixing 24fps (CG) and 23.976fps (live action) for final output at 23.976 (vimeo and such).
    Right now my sequence is at 24fps, and when I export to 23.976, my dialogues seem to shift.
    Should I set my sequence at 23.976fps instead of 24fps?
    Thanks in advance for the help, and sincere apologies if this is a noob question.
    David

    That makes it easy.  Remove the CGs from the project.  Go to Edit>Preferences>Media... and set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to 23.976.  Then when you import the image sequence, PP will assign it the correct frame rate.
    Edit in a 23.976 sequence.

    I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

    What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
    If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
    In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
    Click to view full size
    If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
    Click to view full size
    When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • What is the best way to get a tune created in GB for iPad into iMovie for iPad?

    What is the best way to get a tune created in GB for iPad into iMovie for iPad?

    Haven't done it myself, but seems like the correct workflow would be:
    From GarageBand (iOS), My Songs -> select song -> Send to iTunes
    From iMovie HD (iOS), My Project -> Insert Media -> select by song name
    I'm not sure if GB creates its own playlist for tagging exported songs in your iTunes library so selecting by name would be the next-best method.
    Have you tried this?

  • What is the best way to make my file in FCPX Compatible for a DVD.

    I am working with a file that is about 53 minutes in length.  The video is broken up into 14 3to5 minute videos.  During my project, as I completed each video, I saved a master file and shared as APPLE PRO RES so that I wouldnt lose anything as this is my first time working with FCPX.  This made a hi-def quicktime file of each video (came out great). Now I need to put the entire project together.  My individual master files are about 4g a piece and I would imagine putting them together, will be way too large to make a dvd with.
    My question is what is the best way to put it all together and export/share? I have all of the original projects still in FCPX, do i copy and paste them into one big file? Then share, and If I share what format should i share with?  I need to take the file, throw it on a external HD and put on my laptop to create the DVD in IDVD. Needs to be decent quality for the DVD.  I have read that I can create a DVD right from FCPX, but that would be impossible as I am working on a new imac with no burner!
    ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

    All sounds good.
    Create a new project and paste your 14 videos (projects) sequentially into it, Perhaps insert a gap clip and put in chapter markers if you want. Share>DVD. Should create a high quality disk.
    Good luck.

  • What is the best way to setup iTunes with my current configuration?

    I currently have an iPhone 5 and a new iPad. My wife has the iPhone 4S. I do all the syncs (even my wifes) on the same Windows 7 machine. She has a different apple ID than I do and I share one apple ID accross my iPhone and iPad.
    I have a Windows Home Server 2011 box that stores all my photos and music files. I am able to connect to the box from the Windows 7 machine without issue. I have several media diretories. One of the directories contains all my iTunes music and another seperate directory contains all my photos.
    Here is the question. If I want to sync my iPhone 5 and my new iPad so that I download all the music files and photos how should I setup iTunes? How should I sync my wifes iPhone so she gets all the Photos and music files? One of my chief concern is being able to automatically sync apps and  "new" photos taken from either phone back to my file server photo directory.

    Migration Assistant is the best way to get everything.

  • What's the best way to setup multiple iDevices?

    I have three iPods (1-3 & 2-4) and 2 iPads2, they are all tied into my own Apple ID and with the new changes/upgrading to iCloud what would be the best way to set these guys up?
    I have my own playlist that I like to listen on my iDevices, but some of the songs or even movies are not appropriate for my kids so how would I set it up so not all music/photos/videos are made available on all my devices?
    With the library I already have, is it just best to nuke the iDevices and start fresh with iOS5?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you need to create multi websites on the VPS with one static IP address.
    Your question is more about IIS instead of DNS server. IIS has provide the function about creating multi websites on one machine. You may post on IIS forum for official support:

  • What's the best way to know whether an application is running for the first time? (C#)

    I seen suggestions like making a registry entry, or making an entry in the application specific settings file. But what's the best practice? I want to do some custom tasks if that is a first run.
    Also, I am deploying my application using per machine MSI installer. So un-installation not deleting the user specific config files that's get created under AppData.
    Thanks Prasad

    Hello,
    Whenever possible I prefer to avoid the registry. The following works once per user where we see if a specific folder exists or not, if it does not then do first time initialization work then set a setting in the project which causes a user config file to
    be written to the location for storing user settings per user.
    You first need to create a setting in the project, in this case I did
    var config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.PerUserRoamingAndLocal);
    string configPath = config.FilePath.Replace("\\user.config", "");
    if (System.IO.Directory.Exists(configPath) )
    Console.WriteLine("This is not the first time");
    else
    // Do one time setup here
    Properties.Settings.Default.FirstTimeValue = "1";
    Properties.Settings.Default.Save();
    Console.WriteLine("This was the first time");

  • What's the best way to print content of javax Object (JTable for example)?

    Hi there,
    1) I would like to know the best way to print content of jtable (for example)
    2) I would like to know how can I Print content of SQL statment (for example "SELECT ID, NAME FROM COMPANY")?
    Best Regard,
    Eyal
    [email protected]

    Depends on what you want printed. You can do something like System.out.println(myTable);but you may not like what you see. If you want to print anything else, extend JTable and create a new toString() method that prints out what you want.
    As for printing a SQL statement - assuming it is in a String, you can just do System.out.println(mySQLStatement);

  • 1NAS/1pc/1macbook/iphone, what is the best way to setup itune so that all devices can share the same lib?

    OK, this issue has troubled me for a long time, i just wish to get some input here. i apprecaite any suggestion!
    here is my scenario:
    I have a pc running XP, currently where all my music resides in its local drive.
    The macbook/iphone can see the shared library, w/o any problem.
    But thing is, I don't want to turn on my PC all the time just for other devices to access the music library.
    So I got a NAS (iomega home media cloud) which said to be UPNP media server certified;
    I have tried to copy all my music to the NAS, my PC/mac see the drive in itunes under shared library, but when I click the NAS, nothing happened. The NAS shared library window just loaded for 2 seconds in blank and return back to the main library.
    The NAS works fine in all other circumstances.
    This is my frustration, can anyone tell me, how to make this work? is that just this particular NAS doesn't work? do I have to point my pc/mac itune library to the NAS instead? if that's the case, how would my phone read the shared library, coz apparaently, even my NAS said UPNP certified, the iphone never see that NAS drive under the music app.
    On a seperate note, I also have itune match, where all my musics are in the icloud; would pointing my library to NAS messed up w/ my original music in the cloud?
    I deeply appreciate any feedback and suggestion, i just wish 'it just works'
    Thanks in advance!

    please, anyone?

  • What's the best way to setup new iMac i7 coming on Monday?

    So here's a question for everyone of the very smart people who monitor this thread. I have a G5 tower with Leopard on it and a Macbook Pro (1 generation ago) with Snow on it. First I was planning on starting up the iMac to see if everything worked well. Then install Nikon Scan to see if my film scanner (Nikon 9000) works with the new machine and Snow and then if all goes well migrate the Macbook to it. Or is it better to migrate from the MBP's time capsule backup. My MBP has all I need on it, more so than my G5 tower which seemed to have fallen by the wayside when I got the laptop. Thanks for all the help I've consistently gotten on here btw.

    For the Migration, if the Time Machine backup is recent, then it does not matter if you migrate from the MacBook Pro or from the Time Machine backup.
    Your plan to try out the new iMac +as is+ before migrating is a good one. That's how I would proceed. Apply Apple's recent updates using Software Update, but do not migrate data or install third-party software until you are satisfied that the iMac is working 100%. If you run into a problem, it will be much easier to troubleshoot.
    Your comment about first installing the Nikon Scan software to make sure it works is also a smart idea. You should install that software, and then other third-party software you need, and check for any issues, before migrating your user data.
    From jamesholden post:
    however if you do a clean Leopard install, then install your drivers and software, then upgrade to Snow Leopard, they tend to continue working.
    That would not be possible on a new iMac, since you cannot install Leopard on it.
    If you do the user data transfer using Migration Assistant, I would set it to only migrate Users, not +Applications, Settings, or Other...+ That will transfer your user data, but leave other data alone.

  • What's the best way to catalogue my media before import?

    I've got a new computer on the way and I wondered if some of you guys could help me set up a good file structure. I've been on a mac for the last 10 years and one thing that has got way out of hand is the way I import and save media from card. Although I've never lost connections to any media in the last decade it just looks a mess and it take me a while to locate thing because it has grown out of control.
    Can anyone point me in the direction of some good links to read about this? A new computer means a fresh start and before I start editing on Premire Pro I want to make sure I've got the best possible file structure in place for my media.
    All the best
    Kevin

    JIm, I assume that ... if one uses a camera with multi-part recording of data such as say, AVCHD, that renaming would be a right doggie. In that circumstance, then yes, I can see a "best practice" of never renaming those files.
    Again, coming from stills, "best practice" for cataloguing includes extensive discussions of proper renaming protocol, as the name is considered part of the searchable metadata of each individual file. Often, commercial photogs include their name (or at least initials) and the date of the job in every named file. Of course, those files get used individually, sent off to clients for use, and having the name on the file itself is considered ... wise.
    Within a portrait/wedding clientele, it's a good way to ensure at a glance that all the files in a folder being archived are where they ought to be, which of course, dsc_19843.nef doesn't help with at all. So it's a handy way to ensure that say, all the images going into a project or order for X client are actually images of X client. Of course, under the main name of the client/session, there'll be the original files (typically raw) in one folder, processed-for-use jpegs in another, and perhaps some tiff's or psd's with art-work still in layers in a third.  But this folder use is quite different from video use.
    So ... other than "it's considered best practice" ... I wondery why it's considered "best practice". Not that I'm doubting it at all, especially as you are one of the people around here with oft the best advice. Just curious as to the rationale.

  • What's the best way to uninstall Mountain Lion Server?

    I first installed it on my MacBook Air and setup a faux server to learn. Instead of resetting all I'd like to uninstall, reinstall and start clean. After a new install I would like to use it to manage my Mac mini Server locally and remotely. Any suggestions?

    No problems. And, actually, if you don't want to, you don't even need to re-download.
    Just:
    1) Drag Server.app to the trash.
    2) Go through the intervening dialogs
    3) Remove the state data
    4) Drag Server.app out of the trash and back into /Applications
    5) Authenticate the copy
    6) Launch Server.app and configure
