  • What is the best way to share Address book between 5 Macs that are networked?

We have 5 Macs in the office, using 10.6.x or higher, and linked by a network. One Mac has the company database, and needs to be viewed and updated by the other users. What is the simplest way of doing this?

Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...
    I'd ask over in server...

    Or perhaps Collaboration Services...

  • What's the best way to share JE environments between servlets?

Hi, I'm happily serving requests for the same webapp (so single servlet) which uses multiple JE environments. In my case I have an environment for each db, one of these environments is a login details only db. Things work great, three questions though:
    1. Right now I'm keeping environment/entity store references in global vars (everything below entity store, views etc. is created and discarded for each request), is there a better way?
    2. When I want to add a new app (so additional servlet) - how can I make sure the login environment is shared across servlets, to take advantage of shared cache etc?
    3. As indexes are thread safe, is it considered best practice to store index refs. in global vars. and have each incoming thread (in a servlet) share these vars. or should each request build the object refs. it uses and discard accordingly?
    Hoping the above makes sense.
    PhilQ.

Yes, EntityIndex objects are also thread-safe. Really only EntityCursor objects are not.
The entity objects themselves are not owned by JE. You will have problems if you have multiple threads changing them concurrently (if one thread is changing an entity object's properties and another thread is storing it, for example). However, it is up to you if you want to share entity objects between threads; there is nothing wrong with that, since there is no interaction with JE. But your app will need to enforce thread safety, perhaps by using them only in a read-only fashion, for example.

  • What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?

What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?
Currently I have a common itunes library in a shared folder that each user is linked to.  The problem is that when one user adds music to the shared file, it does not automaticaly appear to other users when they open their iTunes.  They have to go to the shared library and select the new music in order to make it visable in their iTunes.
Would iTunes file shareing fix this problem?
    Thanks

Rick, are you saying that if you try to share a folder outside of home and use sharepoints, then the other mac wont prompt you to log in? Have you tried that? It is hard to believe that is the case
I am sort of saying that. Have you tried it? I know it's hard to believe, but you really need to help us out by trying some steps that you don't believe.
We can't see what your exact situation is. We sort of know what's worked for us out here. Just trying to help you get this going in less than 24 hours!
Sharepoints manages the samba configuration file. It's free software that puts a pretty face on an otherwise cumbersome config file.
    Give it a shot.
windows will not prompt for passwords, I have tried this with multiple computer at home for both vista and xp
As I stated. You will not get prompted on windows, if you have set up sharing in an insecure fashion. You are not using a secured sharing situation.
    No argument with your statement.

  • HT3819 what is the best way to share music from my home computers with sonos?

I've always been partial to Numark and Audio-Technica. Have several DJ friends and a client who runs a DJ business, and they use Audio-Technica stuff almost exclusively.
You may be surprised at how easy it is...
With the exception of cameras (webcams especially) Macs are pretty much "Plug &Play" with anything USB, and even though I've never used one, reviews say you just plug the turntable in and it reads as a drive.

if you have the att device, then use your att locker.
ANYONE can sign up for the att locker here:
    https://locker.att.net/app/#welcome
even if you do not have ATT service, you should sign up NOW.
There is an application that is pre-installed to allow for the 1020 to upload the full resolution files to the AT&T locker.
AND, because they are launching the 1020, they are giving a free upgrade to the account to the 50GB box instead of the 5GB.
they are doing this for a limited time only, I have created a couple of accounts.
after you create your account, it will have to be verified. after you check your email and verify the box, log back in and you will see it is only a 5gb account.
click on "my Account/upgrade" and choose the 50GB and you should see it say FREE under the cost.
then you can upload the full res pictures and share them that way.
otherwise, if you are within reach, try Bluetooth transfer.

  • What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

If you use Adobe Photoshop, or even Adobe Photoshop Elements, stay as far away from iPhoto as possible.
iPhoto does not play nice with Adobe software or with software from any other third party developer.
iPhoto will hide your image files in a library paradigm where you have no access to them other than through iPhoto.

  • What's the best way to share photos?

Now that MobileMe Gallery is gone, what's the best way to share photos over the internet?
Is there some simple method where I can upload an entire album from iPhoto and then send a link to others so they can view them?
I've tried both Flickr and Shutterfly and did not like either.

Why can't iPhoto just pull the images from a media browser or something over the network?
I don't know. Part of the issue has to be that iPhoto is not a HD browser. Another part is what you mean by " ... just pull the images".
Any tips on creating a locally hosted web gallery?
My greatest single tip of all time: try it! The tools available to use for just a few hundred dollars are astoundingly powerful.
Or... does anyone have any Automator magic they'd like to share?
No need. Web galleries are built into Aperture 3. Put the images you want to be in the gallery in one Album (Smart or otherwise). Select all the images. Click "New→Web Page". Select a theme. Change some of the text. Make some other changes. Click "Export Web Pages ... ". Make some more decisions. Give the folder a name. Save it somewhere with access to those whom you wish to see it. Select "Tell me when done". Check your email (have a coffee). Click "Show in Finder". Open the folder. Double-click the file "index.html". Brilliant! Enjoy.
The trick to sharing this is to make the folder available. The index file will always open the web site pages in a web browser.

  • What is the best way to share over 1000 pictures on Apple TV?

What is the best way to share over 1000 pictures on Apple TV?

    Creating Shared Photo Streams:
Shared Photo Streams are permanent iCloud albums for storing photos and videos that can sync across all your iCloud-enabled devices. This is different from your "My Photo stream" that's basically a running tally only holding photos for about a month or 1,000. Shared streams follow different rules...
In your photos app in an iPhone or ipad, at the bottom you'll see a "shared" icon.  Choose it and then create a new shared stream, you don't have to actually share it with anyone when it prompts you for a contact just click "Create".  Then choose the photos you want in there.  If your Apple TV is linked to your iCloud account you will be able to see those shared streams.
    See here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5902.
    Apple states:
How many photos and videos can be stored in a shared stream?
A shared stream can hold a maximum of 5000 photos and videos combined. When you reach your limit, you must delete some photos or videos before adding new ones.
How long are iCloud Photo Sharing photos and videos stored in iCloud?
The photos and videos you share (and the comments or Likes associated with those photos) remain in iCloud until you or the contributor delete them manually, or until you delete the shared stream completely.

  • [Solved] What is the best way to share pacman cache ?

I'm wondering what is the best way to share the pacman cache .
I went with the obvious choice 'sshfs' . But the cache on the server is owned by root so I can't use it dynamically unless I enable root logins , right ?
Is it safe to enable root logins and mount with the root user ?
What is the best and safest way to share pacman cache dynamically ?

Interesting. I use sshfs and yes use root login to do business. But I see it this way you want more security created a stronger password. You want more security than that disable passwords and use keys. But once you start NFS you are surely introducing some security issue just as if you enable root ssh login, so why is NFS better?
Just asking out of interest, I claim to know nothing about security.

Governments and ex's will/may have recourse to the legal process (or in the case of the Gov they can choose to ignore the legal system if they feel like it) when they want to see something of yours, good luck hardening your Mac against that. The best way to avoid the possibility of snooping over public networks is to avoid them but if you can't then Kappy's suggestion will help.
Strong passwords (everywhere) and don't use the same password in multiple locations.
If you really want to secure your home wireless use Mac address connection authentication, do not allow unknown Mac addresses to connect. It's much stronger than a WPA password alone.
