What's the best way to store movies?

Hello, I have burned almost all of my videos to the iMac, and subsequently to iTunes and Apple TV. I'm now running out of disk space on the iMac, no surprise. I have a cloud based backup system (not iCloud), but it's not fast enough to support actually playing movies through iTunes to Apple TV.
so I'm considering buying a local storage drive and connect it to my network. then I'll store burned movies, as well as about 200gb of home movies on it to use locally, then back that drive up to my cloud storage.
My question is how can I set this up to get optimal connection speed on the external drive? I have a wireless router with 3 unused ethernet ports. I don't think my iMac has firewire, and I know it doesn't have thunderbolt.
so is it possible for me to get an external harddrive plugged into the router via ethernet and access it as a local drive? is that the best, meaning fastest way to do it?
Are the other options I'm not considering?

Connection speed for watching video isn't important. I've kept my video, photo & music libraries on EHD's for years with no issues. Apple explains how to move the libraries in:

BTW look at the owners manual for you iMac, it has Firewire if it's newer than 2006 it has Firewire 800.

Hi,
Either userObjet[][] if you know how much data you have, and the data size is fixed, or use a list of lists. E.g. A Vector of Vectors (some will probably say that you should use an ArrayList instead, and that could be the case, but it sounds like you would want to display the data later on, and a DefaultTableModel (for JTables) uses a Vector as data holder).

If you're storing it for a long time, put it away when it's about half full. If you have a couple of batteries for your MacBook, I'd recommend swapping batteries once a month or so to extend the life of both batteries.

What's the best way to store my info externally

I have recently bought my first Macbook Pro 13" with 2.4 Ghz. I am currently using it for my own business and do tend to get a lot of files together. I went to look at "About this Mac" and have already got 369 Gb used up in storage... I have no idea how I have done that as I have hardly downloaded any apps on this computer besides the ones that were on here. I did download Vware Fusion 4 as I have a reservation system which I used to run on my pc and need to have this on here too so perhaps that software takes a lot of space.
Could anyone advise on which is the best way to store my info externally, will any external harddrive do, or do you need a special one for Apple or Macbook pro. I am just asking as I have no idea and prefer to buy the right one straight away.

Sara,
The most reliable method is to use an external hard drive. Some are better than others, but most will work.
For the least amount of setup pain, I prefer to deal with the Mac specialists at OWC, http://www.macsales.com as they stand behind their products with great warranty and support. I have one of their Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB drives that has multiple interface capability so you can get a fast interface for data transfer.

Since you're using RAW files you might peruse the DAM Forum to learn about possible other DAM (digital asset management) software and workflows. There is a wealth of information at that site.

You mentioned that one of your primary needs is to store video, which demands large capacity. As a consequence I'd suggest a drive with at least 1Tb, perhaps greater, capacity. I don't have a preferred brand or manufacturer - it's a bit like recommending which is better between Ford and Chevy - but I have a couple of Western Digital external USB drives which have proven very reliable, and a Seagate which is used as a daily backup and has worked flawlessly.
DWB's point about backups is important too, because when you store files on any drive there is a risk of that drive failing - and indeed, all drives will fail at some point. The question is, can you live with the total loss of those files if the drive does fail? If you are storing files that you value, then a backup is needed to help protect those files. Ideally that would mean two drives, not one. One to use for the storing the files, and the second to use to back those files up.

What's the best way to store test parameters for future use?

I'm creating a test stand that will perform various "standard" tests. Each of the tests has it's own setpoints (integer numbers) as well as some string values that are stored in the log file with the data.
What is the easiest way to store these setpoints and strings so that I can pull them into the VI in the future, say by selecting a test type from a ring control, etc.?
I would also like to make this dynamic so that new test types can be stored from the vi. (i.e. I don't want to have to hard code all the future tests and their parameters).

I have a project on the go for myself/portfolio
It is a booking sheet, where by I have a GUI that has a diary system of a day followed by time slots. This also has a date picker that can change the date of the booking sheet
I want to be able to store mainly strings and ints,
I need to be able to store, retrieve and on occasion change some data.
I was looking at using something called JExcelAPI but I cant get that to work at all, I asked for assistance but was refered to here.

I am interested in ripping my DVD movies to an external HD so they are portable. This is in preparation for a military deployment to the middle east. I would like to take them all so I can enjoy them all while overseas. I am looking at a 1TB external HD. What is the best method to rip them? Do I need Software and and are there any special methods for performing the transfers?

Im trying to create a naive bayesian classifier to attribute aurthorship to some texts. I have three text files in the form of a list of words (listA, listB and listC, where listA is a disputed text and listB, listC are those of known authors). I need to feed these into my program, than compare listA to listB (to check if listA has the same words as listB), perform the classification and do the same for listA and listC.
Im new to java and would like to know the best way of comparing the text files....could i store listA in an array....listB in a hashmap, iterate over the hashmap to check which words are also contained in listA and store the similar words in a seperate arraylist?

If you just want to check if one set of words contains another set of words then something implementing java.util.Set might be sufficient. Read the API docs, you don't need to write much code yourself. Maps are for looking up values based on keys; your problem statement doesn't mention that so you don't need them. Lists are for when the order of entries matters. Read this for more information:

What's the best way to manage movie resolutions with iTunes/iPod

I've just been given a new video iPod, and am now considering importing movies into iTunes so that I can have them on my iPod. What I have is a bunch of MPGs (e.g., family movies from a camcorder, etc.); but I noticed that the iPod won't play them, presumably because they're not MP4 format. I know I can convert them all to MP4 with iSquint or a similar utility. But I want to keep the full-resolution versions in iTunes so that I can display them on a bigger screen as well. So, what is the right way to manage this - do I really need to keep and have in iTunes 2 versions of every movie - one scaled down for iPod as MP4, and one in original resolution? Or is there a better way?

iTunes is straight forward, just use the same ID on all of them.
What exactly do you want to see in messages on the Mac and iPad, messages combined from each of your phones or a different account just for both of you.
You should think about what you want in calendars, contacts etc, on your shared devices.

In two words, FILM SCHOOL.
This is something that can't really be taught about in a forum. People go to four years of film school, or work with an editor for years to figure out what to do.
Cut the scene. Perhaps you add temp music while you are doing it, or after. Depends on your style and needs of the scene. The final music is added later, typically done by a composer who watches the final cut of the film. Sometimes you might use pre-produced music that you have on CD and then pay for the rights to use.
SOund effects. Typically I add temp sound effects while I cut. But, after I am done cutting the scene. I add them later for emphasis. Maybe in the middle if it is a key element, like a phone ringing.
Narration. Depends on the film. But typically I do the temp narration so that I can time the scene, then during the sound mixing phase a profesional narrator is hired to do the job. The final sound mix is typically where all the master sound elements like Music, sound effects and narration are added. All on separate audio tracks.
HOW is this all done? Go to film school to find out. Or become an assistant editor and see how the editor works. This is an art as well as a craft. Years to perfect.

However, the FileDataStore tries to save the auth data locally which doesn't work on Azure. So, I created my own data store that uses blob storage on Azure. However, it creates a new file in blob storage every time it is accessed, so I have a ton

The best thing is that each blob has a property which indicate when the particular blob was last modified.
This value can tell you how old this blob is. And using this value you can select older blobs and delete them.
You will have to delete them one by one or you can run the code in loop to select all the blobs and delete them.
For example you can choose to delete blobs which are older then a week or two weeks or a month. So you can choose what blob selection criteria you will use to select the blobs and then delete them.

What is the best way to store data to a file? Serialization?

FYI: I am some what of a novice programer. I have almost finished my degree but everything I know about Java is self taught (never taken a course in java). Any way here is my question.
So I have an example program that I have created. It basically just has three textpanes which also have the ability to contain images. Now I would like to learn how to store data to a file for later retrieval and decided to use a program such as this as an example. I am not sure if I should use the serialization API that java has or some other means such as XML. If I used XML I was not sure how to store the image data that would be contained in the text panes. I figured serialization would take care of that if I just serialized my main class and then restored it. So That is that I tried first. Is this a good direction to go?
The problem I am having is that I cant seem to get the serialization to work the way I need it to. I am not sure what I am doing wrong because I have read many tutorials and looked at allot of example code but still dont understand.
