What's the best way to wipe user info on OSX without doing a clean install of the OS

Hello,
I am going to give my old imac to my nephew so I want to delete myself as an Administrator and user (ie, remove all traces of my personal info).  However I DO NOT want to delete all the installed applications I have installed over the years as they are useful to him.
Should I just set up a new admin and delete mine or are there other things I can/should do to 'clean out' myself from the system?  (preferences, etc.)
Thank you!

Will deleting my admin account delete all my saved passwords in the keychain?
Yes
How about my old emails?  In addition to Mail, I used to use Thunderbird.  Are there any special places that I need to delete files from for those apps?
Yes old emails are gone. No special places for Thunderbird, emails are kept in the User account folder.
And finally, if he wants to keep my itunes music, can i just drag my itunes folder into his account prior to deleting my account?
This is a copyright violation in most cases unless the music is free of that or the license allows it.
You should deauthorize the iTunes account in the User accounts being deleted, copy protected iTMS content won't play on his account. iTMS music is not copy protected but there is a 5 machine/device limit.
You can transfer music and other files to his account through the Finder > Computer > Macintosh HD > Users > His account > Public > Dropbox that will change the user permissions on the files.
Any iTMS purchased content is digitally signed with your personal information embedded into the files themselves.
If your nephew goes and P2P's your files, you could be held liable for copyright infringement.
If the music files are cd rips, then there is a good chance they are not digitally signed, however Apple might have done something to the files in the background to assist the RIAA against piracy.
There is a 5 device limit to iTMS content, so technically since he's family you can control that and it's included in the iTMS content license, but that doesn't apply to cd rips.
He might not like your music anyway and then seek to share it to get more he does like. So it depends upon the skill level of your nephew if he will do that or not.
Set up his account on the machine, maintain dual accounts until it's all set up, then log into his and delete your account.
Copy protected apps with one machine licenses that "phone home" you will have to either delete or buy another license for the new machine if it's a Mac.

Did the Mac come with two grey disks when new? If so, use disk one to erase the drive using Disk Utility and then re-install the OS from the same disk. Once installed, quit and when the new owner boots they can set it up as a new out-of-the-box Mac when they boot it up. The grey disks need to be passed on with the computer.
If you need detailed instructions on how to erase and re-install please post back.
If the Mac came with Lion or Mountain Lion installed the above process can be done using the Recovery HD as since Lion no restore disks are supplied with the Mac.
The terms of the licence state that a Mac should be sold/passed on with the OS installed that was on the machine when new (or words to that effect).

  • Whats the best way to create USER variable in BI Apps?

I have just installled BI Apps and am trying to integrate EBS R12 with OBIEE 11g
We have USER variable already defined in the BI Apps rpd.
In EBS Security context init block i need to define USER variable, but when i define it... it says *'USER' has already been defined in the variable "Authentication"."USER"*
Whats the best way to create USER variable for EBS Security Context init block?
    1) Delete the existing USER variable and then define a new one ( in this case all the places where USER variable is getting used in the rpd would become <missing>)
And i was told that it should not be done.
Let me know how can it be done.
    Thanks
    Ashish

Disable existing Init block and then double click on USER variable and hit on NEW... button to create new Init block
    Thanks

  • What's the best way to wipe clean a 2006 macbook pro?

I have a 2006 15-inch MacBook Pro, and I'm looking to wipe it clean to speed it up and use it as a bedroom media player (front row/itunes and netflix). What's the best way to wipe it clean and start over?
Also, any suggestions on a media player to use? I hear XBMC and Plex are great, but I don't want it to power another TV, I am going to use it as the "TV" and all controlled by the (old, included, white) Apple remote.
Thanks for any and all help. I'm relatively adept with mac's so it doesnt have to be super simple, but hopefully it doesnt require coding or anything.

Back up all your files to external media. If you don't want this computer to access your iTunes material then "deauthorize" the computer in iTunes. Create a new account on your Mac with admin rights. Delete your old Mac account. Run disk utility and erase unused space.
If you have an iPhone then use the Remote app rather than the Apple remote clicker.
The new ApplyTV has some very good media center features. While using AirPlay you can also stream music thru the AppleTV.
If you're running Lion you made need to upgrade the memory to reduce page swaps.

  • What's the best way to store my info externally

I have recently bought my first Macbook Pro 13" with 2.4 Ghz. I am currently using it for my own business and do tend to get a lot of files together. I went to look at "About this Mac" and have already got 369 Gb used up in storage... I have no idea how I have done that as I have hardly downloaded any apps on this computer besides the ones that were on here. I did download Vware Fusion 4 as I have a reservation system which I used to run on my pc and need to have this on here too so perhaps that software takes a lot of space.
Could anyone advise on which is the best way to store my info externally, will any external harddrive do, or do you need a special one for Apple or Macbook pro. I am just asking as I have no idea and prefer to buy the right one straight away.
Any help would be much appreciated !
    Thanks, Sara***

    Sara,
The most reliable method is to use an external hard drive.  Some are better than others, but most will work.
For the least amount of setup pain, I prefer to deal with the Mac specialists at OWC, http://www.macsales.com as they stand behind their products with great warranty and support.  I have one of their Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB drives that has multiple interface capability so you can get a fast interface for data transfer.
Take a look at what they offer and see what fits your needs.  If you have more questions about doing thin, just ask on here.

  • What is the best way to protect my info in case my iPad is stolen

Ideas for the best way to protect my info I'd my iPad is stolen or lost?

I also had my iPad stolen, and thats when other troubles started! I received an email on my PC stating that my iTunes password had been reset.  The thief had done this!  So I rang the Apple help line to ask what to do. they said just reset the password, and as the thief couldnt access my emails it would be okay,,the Apple emails also suggested this.   But that was the issue that stupid me hadnt realised!!! As the iPad was receiving my emails the the thief could easily reset the iTunes password , and download muic and videos on my credit card on iTunes!!         As happened to me.
Apple does not warn you of this possibility, even when i spoke to their Help line. And searched their website for advice
So, my advice is, Do Not store your email password on your iPad, and  maybe, do not leave your credit card details with iTunes? An irritation I know! If you have not done these things, then if your iPad is stolen then immediately change your email password, and stop your iTunes credit card.
Probably iTunes need a safer way to change passwords, like an sms code to allow password changes, as relying on emails is not safe, as the thief will frequently be receiving those emails too!!!

  • What is the best way is to create a web app item collection which will contain only the listings where addressstate="ABC".

What is the best way is to create a web app item collection which will contain only the listings where addressstate="ABC".

How many systems have you used Robert?
This is the only system you can not have all item data at least in JSON format and all of it. Big commerce has a lower limit and as I have said in every post related to a limit - I understand the function, but you can still make the requests as just one example (front and back)
    Same with API Robert.
Firstly - the SOAP API request on say products gets you ALL the products, if you do something through a REST API request you can  make the requests to get all the items to complete your process of what your doing - You have to otherwise the API is pointless.
Ok if the normal modules can not iterate through if there is a module_data solution, and web apps will get there hopefully sooner then later and you do have the sql query (where) for your filter which is great BUT, if you want to implement a solution across everything you cant do that with the liquid implementation.
This also flows through to the JSON everywhere in concept which is fundamentally flawed for the same reason... And again referring other like services where a hard API has a limit but the JSON request returns everything.
How those work varies from the method of request, some will only update every day, xxx time (Depending on cost of the plan) so its a cached version of data, to the ones that limit that request to x number of times per set time/day.
That is how the actual rest of the world works, varied solutions but they are solutions. BC know they have a few limitations, there clearly is the need for things, there are a varied set of options... It is just a matter of engaging in it and offering up a solution for it, silence just creates frustration.

  • What is the best way to wipe my hard drive for a clean install?

I've been having a lot of insane issues with my iMac like my Dock icons not staying, email messages showing in Mail but when I click on them I can't see any text, Spotlight finding emails and files that don't show on my hard drive, etc.
I've decided that I just want to wipe the whole thing clean and start from scratch. What is the best way that I can do this to make sure that absolutely no data is left on the drive and I am totally starting from scratch?

    Hi David Hamilton1;
I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.

  • What's the best way to get user testing of our app (we're based in the UK)

    Hi all.
We've just developed our first app for Palm and would really like to get some feedback from Palm users (our app allows users to take photos and send them as real printed postcards. We'd be very happy to give users free postcards in exchange for feedback).
The problem we have is that Palm users are pretty sparse in the UK. We've found that user testing with non-Palm users becomes handset testing rather than app testing. We have to teach them how to use Palm ("Where's the back button?") and so the testing mainly focuses on the particularities of Palm rather than our app. Plus, we don't benefit from the user being able to compare to other Palm apps.
Any advice on the best way to get feedback from Palm users? Especially as they'll need to download the SDK and install our app using it in order to get it onto their phones.
If any of the users of this forum are interested in giving the app a go and sending us feedback, I'd love to send you the IPK and then chat. Just send me an email using [email protected]
Our app is available for Pixi+, Pre+ and Pre2.
     Thanks,
     Freddie.

    Hello freddie:
Welcome to the Palm Forums. Thank You for the offer. I highly suggest offering it up
to our many enthusiasts on Twitter as a beta with the #webos hashtag or joining
the Precentral.net community and list it in a topic there, homebrew beta. You would
get better beta response if you Package your app and put it in an ipk to simplify
    the install.
Hope that helps... Best of luck with your app!

I'm trying to figure out the best way to share access to a muse site so that two different designers can be responsible for different features of the site. e.g., one is responsible for photo galleries, the other is responsible for shopping cart. Is there a way to do this?

  • HT4865 What's the best way to protect student info and work saved to iCloud from their school iPads?

I'm doing some prep work for next year's implementation of iPads in some of the lower elementary classes at my school. I've read about the hack-ability of iCloud lately in the online articles. What was happening in Norway is exactly what could be happening in classrooms next year if certain security procedures aren't put in place. I would be grateful for any suggestions that you might have on how to beef up security for the students' work and info, and if you have any suggestions about the best ways to learn with iPads with children in grades K-4 (4-10 years old).
