What's the best wireless router?

I have a TiPBk G4 running 10.4.10, & my Linksys router just died. It was mod# WRT54G, using 802.11g. I understand there is a newer & faster standard, 802.11n. I have a basic airport card (don't think an extreme is even compatible w/ my unit). Will the 802.11n routers work w/ my laptop & the basic airport card? If not, is there some sort of adapter fix that I could try?

I recently bought an Airport Extreme Base Station (the new square one with "n"). It works perfectly with my even older PowerBook G3, which has the Airport "b" card. You need to use Mac OS X 10.4 to run the admin tools, but I see you have that. The new version of the Airport Utility is the best part of the package - very elegant software. I also use it with a Power Mac G5 (with an "g" card).
I saw that Apple has it on the refurb page.

  • What is the best Wireless Router for ichat

    Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone can give me any advice from all your experience as to the best Wireless Router I should get in order to use ichat with a minimal setup hassle. I have a G5 and iBook both using Mac OS X 10.4.3 with an external ichat camera. I am based in the UK and use AOL UK on a 2meg broadband connection. Is there a router out there that has easy software to configure?
    Thanks for your help!!!
    Apple G5 and i Book   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I use A Linksys WRK54G which is Pack of the Wireless router and a laptop PCIAM (or what erver the name is ) card.
It give me UPnP, Port Triggering and of course good old Port Forwarding.
It gives me 4 ethernet ports as well as Wireless access.
It will handle PPPoE logins if the modem is in Bridge mode.
I have it set to have a Static Address Modem to Router and it is also not doing DHCP And therefore Static to the computer(s).
I would also look at what speed your Internet conection is likely to rise to in the next few years. Some devices can not handle the speeds offered in some places. So make sure it will handle the Uplink and Download speeds you want as well.

  • What's the beste wireless router for ADSL?

    Hello everyone,
Since I'm new to the Macworld, I'd like to know what's the best wireless modem to the Macbook. I've been looking forward to the Netgear one, but other options like D-Link that are lesse expensive.
So, what's the best option for connection speed, usability and easy setting up?
    Thanks in advance!

Just stick with the netgear if you could instead of D-link, a bit pricier is better than pulling your hair out to configure whats wrong...
I use 2 netgear and both work very well. 11b at home and 11 g at the office.
Just remember overtime you might have to set it up the internal configuration (depend on the isp provider) and you might be able to set it up by connect and using pc and with supported web browser like internet explorer to access the web based configuration setting by typing their default ip address.
    Good Luck.

  • What is the best wireless router for my imac G4

i need a wireless router for my imac g4. Which one do you recommend? All all wireless routers capatible with macs?

As Donald mentions, the routers are all compatible with Macs, but the software CD that they include often has Windows specific software on them that is really just a front-end for configuring the router for use. It does nothing that you cannot do yourself manually by accessing the router through the IP address that gets you into the router settings.
If it sounds difficult, it certainly is not. Once you are in - and that is simple - the router's info is in a nice graphical interface that is simple to use.
I use a Netgear WGR614 for my mixed Mac-PC network at it works like a charm. I got it at Best Buy for $39.99.

  • What is the best wifi router?

what is the best wifi router?  I have a netgear which required that I set my devices with static/manual IPs etc...  and yet still losing connection at least once a day.  Is airport express my best option to connect both apple and PC devices?

Sorry, but that would be difficult to answer. What is best for you will depend on a number of factors, including: current networking hardware, network environment, your budget, etc.
If you are sure that your current Netgear router is not working for you, I would recommend that you first establish you basic networking requirements. That is, what do you want your network to do? What area do you want for Wi-Fi coverage? What can your current networking clients support, both for radio mode (802.11g, 802.11n, or 802.11ac) and wireless encryption types (WEP, WPA, or WPA2)? Will you be streaming HD video content on your local network, and/or from the Internet? What bandwidth (download/upload) is your ISP providing you?
From there we might be able to make sum recommendations.

What is the best wireless camera that will work with my mac?

Any reliable brand that claims Mac compatibility.
Different wireless cams (wi-fi versus BlueTooth) may work better for different purposes, so ask your retailer for one that best does what you want to do with it.  For some examples of all kinds and types, click the link at the end of this sentence to see results of this search for your posted question.

  • What is the best wireless printer for the MacBook Pro?

what is the best wireless printer for a macbook pro?

I use an Epson NX430 (inkjet) which uses a wireless card: no issues. Also a Brother HL-3040 (laser) connected to modem by Ethernet cable: no issues. Depends on your printing needs and amount of work space available.

  • What is the best wireless printer to use with an IPad Air and IPhone?

What is the best wireless printer to use with an IPad Air and IPhone that will print both text and photos?  Also, is the separate keyboard available for the IPad Air, yet?

Best is relative. Different people like different things. I have an epson that I like. I'd look through a site like Best Buy and compare reviews for Air Print enabled printers.
as to the keyboard, I know Zagg has one and I think there are other manufacturers that have keyboards for the Air. As far as I know, pretty much any bluetooth keyboard will work, but if you want a case then you'd need to get a specific one.

  • What is the best wireless label printer for iPad?

What is the best wireless label printer for iPad?

The Epson Mobilelink P60 series and the Star Micronics T300 will work over wi-fi, but not being AirPrinter printers you'll have to find a third-party printing app that will work with them. The Epson P60 now also supports printing via Bluetooth, according to Epson:
    https://pos.epson.com/products/MobilinkP60withBluetooth?ProductPK=679
Perhaps one of those would work for you.
    Regards.

What is the best wireless printers for the iPad?

YOu may also want to consider that some printer manufacturers have apps you can use to print, and there are third party printer apps you can also use. So really, in theory, any wireless printer will work with an iPad. If it's airprint enabled it'll work natively, if it's not air print then you use their app or a third party app, so you can potentially expand your search to find a good printer that meets any specs you have (speed, or quality or ink cost) and then work with it to make it print with your iPad.

  • What is the best wireless internet connections for a Macbook

I have been trying to wirelessly connect a Macbook for internet connection. What is the best router that can be purchased for Macbook that will also work with a PC.

Yes, it shouldn't matter. I just picked up an Airport Express tonight - VERY easy to setup and works like a charm. One caution - Express is a wireless router ONLY. There are no additional wired ports on it for wired systems in your house. You'll take the cable that comes from your DSL modem out of your computer, and put into the port on the Express (if you already have a wired computer). If you need a wired/wireless router, you'll require the Extreme model.

  • What are the best wireless settings for a WRT160N v2?

I am trying to find out what the best wireless settings are for the WRT160N v2 to have the best connection with my PC (WUSB600N) and my PS3 gaming console.  Are there any suggestions on which channel I should be using, etc?  My PC and PS3 are about 30ft from the router and unfortunately, I cannot move the router.  I have really no obstructions from PC and PS3 to the router, but signal strength is low.  If anyone can enlighten me, I would much appreciate it.
    Thanks for your help!

Here are some settings which you can set on your Router, and i think this should solve all the problem. As this is the same settings which i have set on my Router and its working perfectly fine.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • What's the best wireless service to use?

    Hello!
My client would like to know what's the best unlimited service plan (Verizon? AT&T? T-Mobile?) to get for wireless Internet on his MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5.5; Leopard). Do they have devices with USB and card with the antenna? I don't know how well these providers support Apple computers. It would be nice if it has PC support too to use between laptops/notebooks if needed.
This is important if there is no wifi, remote locations, etc. Also, prices are not an issue, fast speeds, and no caps are recommended. It should be similiar to his Palm Treo 680 smartphone, but it is very slow so hopefully the ones for MacBook Pro won't be slow.
    Thank you in advance.

    scb wrote:
It is my understanding that at present, no more unlimited plans exist. The Aircards (PCMCIA, Express, or USB) do work for OS X. That will not be an issue. The speeds are not good. They are barely 2-4 times modem speeds, at best, and under the best circumstances. The cards will be free, but expect $60/month for the top services.
Note: Sprint may have an All-for-one plan that will allow your cell phone to be used as a modem, if your cell supports that. This will cost $99. I am not certain about this.
I am not sure how that works with a Treo 680 (a smartphone) that already has Internet and it's slow too (guess 2-4 times as well?).

  • What is the best wireless rotuer for Ichat Video?

Hey everyone I just wanted to know what wireless routers have been found to be the best for Ichat video? I know some do not work with it very well and just want to make sure I get one that does.
    Thanks in advanced
    Graham

    Hi Sepp1414,
Both Defcom and I use a Netgear in the DG834 range.
    Mine is a DG834GUK
Before that I had a Thomson Alcatel 510v4 which needed and had done the SIP unbinding to be able to contact everyone I tried.
    Many Linksys seem to OK.
    Things to avoid at present
The BT Hub in Great Britain
Any Pre-N or MIMO device These try to guess what the 802.11n format will be. iChat does not like these for some reason although some are reporting success.
Some devices offer VoIP (Allowing Land-line phones to be connected to the internet). These have SIP bindings of various sorts and are not unbound the same way the Alcatel range was. They can work if placed in the 'right' place in the LAN

  • What is the best wireless printer for new iMac w/Lion?

I just bought an iMac (Lion) and now, I need to buy a new printer since my old one is not wireless capable (HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One). My old G4 is still up and running (using it only for Adobe CS2 until can afford that upgrade) and the printer works fine. However, the iMac will not be in the same place as the G4, so I need a wireless printer.
I would also like the new printer to play nice with a PC laptop (husband's for work) as well as be able to eventually print from an iTouch and iPad.
I may be asking a lot, I know.
I would buy AirPort if I knew it worked with my current printer, which would be great... but from what I've been able to research, that isn't possible with this model. I will eventually end up buying AirPort at some point in the future, but right now a printer is my focus and I would prefer not to buy both right now.
So my question is...what printer would be best for both a Mac and PC without having to buy AirPort also?
    Thanks in advance!

Whatever you do - do not by the HP8500. I am about to take a baseball bat to mine and bett the living daylights out of it. I used to have a 6500, reasonably god  but slow and woudl not scan when linked to the mac...so I 'upgraded'.
Initially it worked well, quality is good and did everything well ....it still will not scan with the mac but will with every other lap top/PC in my house..but hat did not bother me too much. It is fast and quality is good...UNTIL
    - It drinks ink faster than than you can imagine
    - you cannot buy non hp replacement cartridges easily and not from Staples of PC World etc
    - It sense that ink is running down so keeps sending annoying messages
    - if you use a non std cartridge it registers it as empty and send more annoying messages
    - the cartridges cost about £50 to replace al four - you can buy a new kodak all in one printer for £55
    - it will print perfectly well with non HP or HP remanu cartridges, but still sends the dumb messages
    - when using HP catridges it keeps telling you to replace them even though they are not empty and theres plenety of ink (marketing scam)
    - This morning, the printer decided that the new (non HP magenta cartridge) that  put in yesterday and was quite happy with ...is now empty...it refuse to print even black until i replace that cartridge.
I have no problem buying HP catridges if the price is fine - but the combination of a software blip plus high prices make me seethe. I will destroy this piece of junk and buy myself a Kodak or Brother - but never ever again an HP product - having spent over £3000 on PC/Laptops and printers from these bozos over the last two years they can count me out from next years forecasts
