What is the deal with System Reset/Refresh in Windows 8.1?

Either this is a serious defect with the Windows Store-provided update for Windows 8.1 or Microsoft has done this intentionally but doing an update to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store-provided service nukes your ability to use System Reset/Refresh.
It claims files are missing which means that the update erased the necessary reset files from the HDD but didn't replace them during the update with Windows 8.1 compatible equivalents.
I had to do a System Reset on one of my computers and I ended up having to get a Windows 8.1 ISO from a less than reputable source just to get my hands around the necessary missing file and now I can't even activate it with my Windows 8 Pro upgrade
key. None of this would have been a problem if I could just perform the System Reset in place on Windows 8.1 and reset it back to a neutral, clean Windows 8.1 installation.
I've since managed to find a way to do the install the way I needed to but can someone please give me some clarity on this subject so I don't have to go through all this again (as I've got two other computers that run a Windows Store-updated Windows 8.1
installation and at least one of them is probably due for its own System Refresh)? What can I do to refresh a valid Windows 8.1 installation if I need to?
EDIT: Oh, and one more thing: one of those computers is an OEM-installed Windows 8 copy that was subsequently upgraded to 8.1 yet it too suffers from the "missing files" error when a System Refresh/Reset is requested. What
am I supposed to do here if I want to do a System Refresh to this computer? Will the OEM key inside it activate if I go outside the operating system to install it anew?

First, you perform a System Refresh for what ever reason. After the Refresh, within a few minutes get the Windows version watermark in the lower left corner of your desktop that shows the windows version and build. Then after that
you get another watermark above the first watermark that says you need to activate by going to **Change PC Settings***. From there you are on the activation screen and its state with out doing anything...**Activation Error Description Not Found.**
When you click "Activate Now" nothing happens. You briefly see "checking this key" and then nothing.

Now at this point I cannot attempt to do an online activation because the sppsvc.exe is producing the 0xC0000022 error

The Software Protection service runs when I activate my PCs that are getting a "Clean" installs, Just to test the theory I did a refresh install on the "clean" installed pc and **VOILA** SAME ERROR....
Let me clarify that one of the PCs has a dual partition and a complete re-install of the OS will mean some extensive work fixing the bootloader as well. I have 150 PCs to refresh and this is what happened on the first one, then the 2nd. I am
running these on a TechNet VL and have never had these issues in the last 3 years.
Listen to these people. ALL are having the same issue. There has to be a process to fix it. As difficult as it may seem, some of us don't mind spending a few extra minutes running administrative tasks to fix this instead of re-installing.
That's the novice way to fix the issues and the most painstaking for those of us who work 12-to 14 hrs a day and don't have the time. We need this fixed. PLEASE PLEASE
Pretty please. Please take the time to take ownership of this issue and pioneer a real fix for the hundreds maybe thousands that are having or have had (broke down and did a "clean" install) this EXACT issue. Thank you so much for your help!!!!!

I can't see my screen! What's the deal?

Oh yeah, hi everyone. I'm new to the forums.
So yeah, I have an ibook g4 that I use almost every day. It's fairly new (not quite 7 months) and it's already having problems. I've dealt with Apple and their product service before with my iPod, and i'm sorry, but their customer service ***** badly. I'm dreading calling them tomorrow because I know nothing is really going to get taken care of.
But anyway, I turn on my laptop today and my screen is so dark I can barley make out anything. It's just bright enough that when I hold it at the right angle I can see my wallpaper, but not bright enough to see any details of it or to actually be able to DO anything on my computer. I tried the obvious; turning up my screen brightness but that didn't work. I restarted my laptop and that didn't work. So right now i'm on my roomie's computer. It's the weirdest thing ever, there's nothing wrong with the computer. It's terribly dark but I can see just enough to know that the computer is working fine, I just can't see anything. Sometimes I can see my arrow curser if I move it into the right light.
I don't know what the deal is, I haven't done anything to it. Nothing's been spilled on it and it hasn't been dropped, so I don't know what could make this happen.
The big problem is there isn't any place around here to take it to see what's wrong with it. So that's why i've come to this forum trying to figure out what the deal is. Am I being too vauge or does everyone know what i'm trying to explain?
Sorry my thoughts are so scattered, i'm pretty mad right now so i'm not thinking straight lol.

A little update: I called Apple support today and once again got no help whatsoever. Big surprise. The guy on the phone was nice, but when I asked him if my warranty would cover a repair on my backlight he said that it wouldn't because our warranty only lasted 90 days. Then he spent the rest of the phone conversation trying to pawn off the Applecare on me. No solutions offered at all.
I had the protection plan for my LAST ibook and it did me no good, why should I pay for it again when I still had to pay $900 to repair my last one? Plus the $183 dollars to buy the ******* thing.
I hate acting like such a diva, and I don't like badmouthing Apple on their own site, but this is ********. I'm tired of dealing with Apple's horrible products and even worse customer service. I've spent thousands of dollars on their products and have yet to be satisfied. I will never buy another apple product again.
The worst part is I don't think apple cares.

I come on this forum and i read everyone is posting with the same exact memory module i have. I was told from someone that i should get more reliable memory however i've switched between two memories corsair and crucial. I had the feeling when i got a new memory module it still wouldnt fix the problem i had to begin with. I am having a problem of my system shutting down every 5 seconds and not even booting at times. I even have seen people witht he same power supply i have able to post. And before anyone ask the simple questions yes the 4 pin auxiliary is plugged in im past that.

Huahuahuahauhauhua OMG i think i found the problems.... Someone correct me if im wrong... But I think this memory have is newer than the approved i got from my dealer. In this case what Bas said about the memory companies being stick solderers is true cause they modify without letting you know.

What is the deal with ReiserFs?

What exactly is the deal on ReiserFs?
ALL the literature I read on it leads me to believe it is an excellent, fast, secure, stable and best Linux file system, by a significant margin.
However, whenever it is mentioned in these forums, it is almost invariably in a negative context.
Having trouble with pacman? ReiserFs is the cause.
Poor performance? Data loss? ReiserFs is the cause.
I use it myself, and I haven't ever used ext3 with Arch, so I have no comparison, but am I missing out on some performance, speed or stability that I might gain by using something other than Reiser?
I have never really had an issue with data loss, and Arch is the fastest distro I have ever used, but pacman does have a little lag the first time I use it on a bootup....anyway, just wanted your thoughts on this.

I know that this is an ancient thread, but I disagree so strongly that I had to say something. I haven't tried ext3 with pacman but I can tell you with with a certainty, reiser3 performs _much_ better than xfs at pacman database inquiries. When I first came to arch, I was already prejudiced against ext3, so I never even tried installing it on my root fs. But I can tell you that at one point, I switched to XFS, and it was unbearable. Pacman inquiries were always pretty much instant under reiserfs, but under XFS, an initial inquiry took at least 10 seconds. I reinstalled using XFS again, and still the same result. Fed up, I went back to reiser, and pacman inquiries were once again instant. I realize that you didn't mention XFS in your FS list, but I just wanted to point out that FS can definitely make a difference. I have read elsewhere in this forum that Reiserfs
The reason that I refused to use ext3 is because a long time ago, I had a HD that was dying fast. On that HD, I had two partitions with two different FS', one was reiserfs, the other was ext3. I was able to easily recover all data from the drive from the reiser partition, but on the ext3 partition, I permanently lost a lot of data. I realize that this could have been coincidence. This was probably the result of actual damage patterns on the physical drive, but it didn't matter, I wouldn't be using ext3 again.
Now I am considering using ext4 for my / directory. I am already using it for /home, and am happy with it. (Of course the performance demands on that partition aren't as great as they are on /)
Never tried reiser4, because it was apparent that hans had slipped into madness.

I live far away from my friend, and we video chat. Sometimes I can't hear her, but she always hears me! Everything says that audio is fine, and connection is great but I still can't hear her. WHATS THE DEAL WITH THAT?

Lets talk in broad terms first.
For a Buddy to hear you the Mic as to be connected and turned On in iChat
Taking that it is going to be an Internal Mic we can presume it is connected.
In iChat it is turned On in the Video menu (It will read Audio if you have no camera) and is the one to the right of the Buddies menu.
In here, Microphone Enabled (Or Audio Chat Enabled in Lion) needs to be ticked.
The Mic then needs to be chosen in System Preferences > Sound > Input AND in iChat as the input/Microphone choice.
In iChat the choice is made in iChat menu > Preferences > Video/Audio Section > Microphone drop down.
In the System Preferences > Sound > Input the volume has to be high enough for you to be heard.
This tends to be a setting that moves the blue bars to about 3/4s of the way across. (At least 1/2 way and not banging in to the right hand end when you talk)
If you are doing things in other apps that use the mic differently or even a different Mic you may have problems if you don't manually change things back for iChat.
So...
Transferring this to the Other end, your Buddy may not have the Mic on.
May have been doing something else Audio-wise and not changed things back.
May have reduced the volume for Input for another App and not reset it.
She may also have issues with the OS "Seeing" the Mic
She should check the System Profiler (Information in Lion) and see if in Hardware > USB the mic shows up
You can access this from the Apple Icon Menu and holding the ALT key down.
If it does not show up here then a SMC/PMU reset may be in order.

Whats the deal?

So we had / have a standard "Blast" internet which was 75/10 connection speed. I sometimes work from home, and we are a pretty connected family, so we have been running into the insanley stupid bandwidth cap. Serioulsy? A Bandwidth cap on a landline? Whatever, I wont get into how stupid that is and how other providers (google fiber) will be in our area soon and hopefully I can drop comcast completely. Anyways, I decided to "upgrade" to a buisness class account for the internet. Which is costing me more than the internet we currently have and ITS SLOWER. $109 a month for 50/10. At this point I was kind of numb, and just ready to be done paying overages. The comcast guy came out, installed it and activated our modem for us, since I provide my own modem. Finally, when I called to cancel the home service they let me know that since I have a bundle with the internet and the TV, that they cant bundle buisness with home services...so now I have to pay you MORE for cable that I already have!
This entire ordeal has left a bad taste in my mouth. When I was on the phone with a representative I was asked if I had considered monitoring my internet usage and scaling it back when I am getting close to my data cap. Is there some sort of data shortage I should know about? Is the internet about to colapse and we are rationing the last internet reserves? Why should I need to curb my internet habits when I am paying a company $109 a month to provide me with that service? Thats insane. Heres what I want, I want the buisness class internet without the bandwidth cap and I want you to leave my TV alone, I am not changing anything with my cable subscription. Zoning isn't something we have control over. Zoning is determined by local governments as a tool for urban planning. Zones are enacted as a by-law which regulate the use, form, design, and compatibility of development. If you think that Comcast, or any other business for that matter, has any influence on government zoning, then you don't really understand what zoning is.
The back end has nothing to do with merging accounts together because you're still dealing with two different kinds of classes. Business class is different from Residential. This is something that you've witnessed first hand and can attest to when you switched from Residential internet to Business internet. You got different speeds, different rates, different kind of agreements, and no data cap. All those things were different from how your residential internet was set up. It's the same for TV. Business TV has its own specific set of rates, agreements, regulations, etc. Bottom line, because they're different classes, you can't merge them together.
The data limit is something that is still being evaluated for change. What you should try to understand is that the current data limit is more of a median mark. Some customers will exceed that mark while others will use substantially less and some will use right around that amount. For many, it's a very viable amount of data. However customers use their own discretion with the amount of data they use. When you're asking about what the point of giving people 75 to 50mb down, then you also need to understand the difference between data and speed.
The purpose of having higher upload and download speeds is for bandwidth allocation. Each thing you upload/download takes up a certain amount of bandwidth. Data is the amount of content transferred to and from your computer through your modem. While all things you do online use your data, it's the type of applications you're using that ultimately contribute to your data consumption. Things that require more data, such as video streaming as an example, use significantly more data than just general web surfing. Thus, the more bandwidth you have available, the quicker you can complete the task.
With all that being said, we are always looking into ways to improve our service and appreciate any constructive feedback both you and other forum members have contributed and will be sure to share the communities opinion with our management team.

What is the deal with this thing?

My computer no longer recognizes my ipod mini, won't charge it, or anything. It isn't responding to anything. I have tried resetting it so many times. All it does is show the "Do not disconnect." screen, and the backlight turns on when I press a button on the click wheel. My computer does not acknowledge that the ipod is connected to it at all, so I just diconnected it. However, the screen still says the same thing! I cannot find anyway to get some help off the Apple site. There are e-mail addresses or anything, which is completely annoying. My ipod mini is 13 months old and cost way too much money for this to be happening. Is it lost for good? What is the deal with this thing? Seriously, please help.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.

Yes, you are correct, it can be a bit annoying reporting a post to be edited, but in the long run, we are still trying to help someone with a problem that they are having.
I just want people to realize that these forums ARE a public place and that the info they post may remain on the forums indefinitely if not removed by a host, and that everyone can read what is posted.
Just because these are Apple forums shouldn't make people lapse in their better judgement of posting personal details.

These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here.
Audiobooks (and ringtones) are currently a one-time only download. I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them who are requiring the one-time only download restriction. To get it onto your other devices you will need to sync it via a computer. Depending upon what country that you are in, Audible.com have their own app (Audiobooks from Audible) so you might be able to buy direct from them, though I don't know whether you can buy within their app or download audiobooks directly from them within the app e.g. whether they need to be copied via a computer.
