What's the deal with 32 bit and chroot?

I've read all over the place about chroot and 32 bit libraries or something, and I'm wondering if that's something that would be helpful for 64 bit systems for 32 bit compatibility.
I guess I just want to know what that is.

Basically, 64-bit can run 32-bit executables (the reverse doesn't work, however). The problem is, all non-trivial executables have to reference libraries, and libraries differ between 64-bit and 32-bit. Some distros, like Ubuntu, use a multilib system, where there's two sets of libraries. Some apps behave better with this sort of setup than others.
A chroot is basically a 'virtual root'. You'd probably know that in linux everything is done relative to a root filesystem. So, for example, an app who wants libraries will default to searching in /lib or /usr/lib. In a chroot, you'd define a folder in your filesystem (/opt/arch32 for example) to be the root of the install. Meaning that all the executables run inside that chroot (via schroot or whatever) will see /opt/arch32/lib as /lib. That way, all apps will run as if they were natively running on 32-bit, no need for a multilib system.

  • What is the deal with MP4s and Itunes?

Why does quicktime and Itunes always put "This document could not be opened"/"Quicktime does not support this file type"/"An invalid public movie atom was found in this file". Only about 2 movies have work in Itunes, and one became corrupted and kept making itunes close whenever I played it. WHAT DOES IT WANT? It says it wants MP4/M4V and I've tried both.

What movies? From what source?  While mp4 is more restrictive than some containers it can still hold many variants of audio and video.  iTunes is limited in codec support.

Video content purchased from the iTunes Store.
QuickTime and MPEG-4 movie files that end in ".mov", ".m4v", or ".mp4" and are playable in QuickTime Player.

  • What's the deal with iCal and DNS?

So according to the documents, you need a domain name and fully functional reverse DNS, to use the caldav server? What's that all about? Do you really need all that? Why can't you just type in the IP of the server, and connect to the server? Just like connecting to a web server, nice and simple? Most ISP's won't give you custom reverse DNS. My collocation data center does, bust all the calendar servers i've set up, were in small office networks with small mac mini servers. I feel like I'm missing some part of this equation?

Why? Modern IP network security and user authentication is based on forward DNS, and particularly on matching forward and reverse DNS.
More than iCal Server here, Mac OS X Server itself expects functional DNS.
If you're running privately, the easiest approach is the obvious one: [set up your DNS|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] and be done with it.
Mac OS X Server can get wonky with no DNS and can get particularly wonky with bad DNS. And the authentication services can get particularly cranky in the absence of DNS. (That's why SLS sets up its own very private rDNS environment for itself during the installation, when installed in the absence of local DNS.)
nb: iCal doesn't need the SRV records if you're on the default ports.
Or for running your iCal publicly? You're in a slightly tough spot with your ISP. Try it. Like with the mail server and other services, I'd tend to have issues with mismatching reverse DNS. Or connect into and use a tunnel, as that reduces the "fun factor" with network security and dealing with the yutzes that attack everybody's servers, in addition masking to the rDNS aspects.

  • What's the deal with DVI and Thunderbolt displays?

I have up and until now only ever had a MacBook, I planned on getting an iMac desktop but that didn't work out. However, now I am set on getting a Mini, but I remember there was a lot of comotion with the display connector and was hoping someone could guide me on that. I am looking to get a second hand late 2012 Mini, 2.3GHz and 16GB RAM.
I know there are Thunderbolt displays and DVI ones and converters and all that but what is the issue? Which one should I get?
Thanks in advance, it was one problem I thought I wouldn't have to worry about.

All I can say is that I have a TB display with my Mac Mini (late 2012) and it works great.  The Mini has a TB port so works with the display perfectly.  If you do not want a display that has speakers, camera, mic and ports on the back then you could get a less expensive non Apple monitor but I see some users have display issues depending on the specific monitor being used..  I will others comment on that.

  • What's the deal with notes and screenshots for upgraded app versions?

We uploaded a new version to replace our 1.1 version of an app in the store.
There was some confusion today that still persists:
    (1) For a while, the link to our current version app became invalid and we lost like 2/3rds of our normal sales until the link became valid again. Anybody else ever see that happen? Very frustrating.
    (2) Right now, there are two app versions inside itunes connect - the current selling one and the upgraded version awaiting review. I know the old one disappears when the new version is approved and goes on sale. But what is confusing is that the new screenshots and notes for the new version are also displaying in the current app version on sale in the store! I went ahead and added an explanatory note to potential downloaders... but is this a bug or something? Or is that the way it has always worked?
How do people here tend to handle the timing of new screenshots and descriptions when you add new features and want to show them off in your update app?
    Thanks,
    doug

This has been discussed a number of times here already.
The only items cached for an update release are the specific 'update/what's new in this version' notes.
All other changes will be updated immediately (within a few hours).
    You have 2 choices:
    1. Post the changes with a note (i.e. this is the next version, awaiting apple approval) so users aren't ticked by downloading the latest actual version.
    2. As soon as your update is officially released (monitor it) change the text and images.

  • What's the deal with Intel and the new kernel?

    Hi
I have trouble understanding the whole deal behind Intel's video drivers and the new kernel. What doesn't work and why? Could someone please try to explain what the problem is in a way so that a newbie like me can understand it?
    Thanks

Intel and Linux are transitioning to a new graphics system. We're in the middle of the transition, so everything's kinda suckish right now. Old kernel and drivers are better, development kernel and drivers are almost as good, and they will get much better soon.

  • So what's the deal with AIM and Push notifications?

So we all get 3.0. AIM is supposed to get push. So going into the AIM prefs, "push" is the same old send an SMS to the iPhone number. The SMS comes in, you hit reply and the iPhone opens SMS app!!! It doesn't open AIM.
This is nuts. Talk about things never changing.

    Randy Fast wrote:
The app isn't yet updated to take advantage of the PNS. Just wait, a few are coming out now. AP news just got updated and has PNS settings.
AIM was one of the apps used for testing Push for the last 10 days. And I'm using the paid version. One would think then it would be working.
I've been using BeeJiveIM for so long, I bought AIM today to see how the Push works.
So what you are saying is Push notifications are still not implemented?

  • What is the deal with Siri and July 27th, 2014?

I'd like to know why when you ask Siri what July 27th, 2014 is we are get the response "opening the gates of hades".  Can someone from Apple please explain this.  I don't find it amusing, and I think Apple needs to be held accountable for it, and owes us an explanation.

My apple TV no longer finding my movies and photos. What's the deal with this?

  • I am getting my third battery and charger! What's the deal with poor quality?

My macbook is a late 2009 model.  It's always been running great, but I have some key issues that are making me question ever buying a mac again... For starters, I am purchasing my third battery and charger since owning this computer.  I am not very happy with the quality of these devices...  The battery is buldged out, and looks like it's ready to explode any day! The power supply is frayed, and exposing bare wires!  What is the deal with such poor quality products? I always thought Apple was top notch in high quality, but lately, I've been proven wrong...
    Power cord:
    Battery:
Seems to me that these issues REALLY need to be addressed by Apple.  The reviews on the power supplies are ridiculous!  Numorous complaints, yet Apple has YET to do anything about it!  So my question is, what is Apple going to do about these issues?  These need to be addressed, and fixed, ASAP!  I owned a Dell laptop for 6 years, and never had an issue with the batteries I had, OR the power supply, and it cost me half the price of this macbook.

That would be awesome, if the nearest service area wasn't 4 hours away.... It would cost me just as much in gas to drive down there as it would just to buy a cheap replacement off of ebay...

Interesting tid bit.  I created an AAC of the original file, deleted the original MP3 from my library and also deleted the Clean matched track from the icloud.
Result is that it matched with the explicit version of Mrs. Officer this time.
What I am curious about is which songs this is happening for. I've went thru a few batched of about 500 songs at a time and redownloaded in 256k for many tracks. Sadly we don't have people to bring this to our attention and I have so much music that it's impossible to go thru every song to make sure I am getting the right version.

I am getting sick and tired of clicking the "Report this Post" button.
People need to seriously watch what's details they are posting!
The other day I reported a post that had full name, address, phone number, email, serial number, etc.
    It's starting to get frustrating.

Yes, you are correct, it can be a bit annoying reporting a post to be edited, but in the long run, we are still trying to help someone with a problem that they are having.
I just want people to realize that these forums ARE a public place and that the info they post may remain on the forums indefinitely if not removed by a host, and that everyone can read what is posted.
Just because these are Apple forums shouldn't make people lapse in their better judgement of posting personal details.

  • What is the deal with the crazy zooming when I drag the playhead??

What is the deal with the zooming in with the dragging of the playhead??? I'm sure I can adjust/turn off this feature in the preferences. How could i use this to benefit me? How would it? It seems so spastically erratic!

I use it quite a bit for zooming in and out (by dragging up and down) but you have to be careful you don't move left or right when doing this as it then becomes a bit unpredictable as you say...
If you just want to use the playhead for dragging left and right (and if you can't find a pref to turn it off) you'll just have to be careful to drag only in the horizontal axis and not up or down..
    Cheers

  • What's the deal with dual processors???

The whole dual processor thing has been bugging me for some time now. If I have a dual 500mhz processor, is it the same as a 1.0ghz processor, worse than one, better than one?! Are there other factors at play? In my limited scope, if you had a dual 500, 533, whatever, it would be the same as a single 1.0ghz - and yet these dual processors are priced much cheaper. I really am at a loss as to how computers do their processing, and how to compare single processor G4's and dual processor G4's when making a purchase.
    Insight would be greatly appreciated!

And you shouldn't forget, the future is multiprocessors. There is a limit to miniturization, and the solution seems to be multiplication. So operating systems and applications are increasingly going to be multiprocessor-aware. Maybe a perfect example is the upcoming MacOS release, Snowleopard. Apparently, there will be almost no cosmetic changes. The changes will essentially be 'under-the-hood'. And you can bet, that some of those changes will be increased efficiency with respect to multiple processors.
So what's the deal with airplane peanu...err, dual processors?
The advantage, theoretically is, having more workers to do the work. Your 1ghz processor is like a worker who can lift 100kg, and your 500mhz are like workers who can lift 50kg each.
So where's the advantage? If you have a farm with 40 kg hay bales in the field that you need to pick up, your better off with two workers than one right? Or 8 workers in the case of a 8-core MacPro. So an multiprocessor-aware operating system, doles out the work much more efficiently, spreading the tasks around, or spreading a single task around in pieces (if the app is so written).
You've heard of render farms? The multiple computers used to render the frames of animated movies? Its the same principle. Having computer 1 render the first 1000 frames and computer 2 the next, the project gets done within a lifetime. If they had had only one computer, ToyStory would still not be finished.
Its the future. Just wait till the end of this year for example. Nehalem chips will be sporting even more processors.
