And about the "Oracle is going to take over the Mac version", I'm not so sure.
Is that mean Oracle will make the Java update?  Then we should download a Java update package file to update or keep using the "software update" way or both? Are they gonna release the older version Java package? Are they gonna take all of the responsibilitys for the Cross-platform bugs?
Some answers of those questions are obvious. But there is no proof!
I don't know about proof. It is out there somewhere if you are really into Java, which I'm not.
It is "common knowledge" that Apple is running all Java 1.6 updates while Oracle is taking over all Java 1.7 henceforth. Back in the day, Apple needed Java, but Sun didn't need Apple. Ergo, it was Apple's responsibility to provide Java. Today, the tables are turned. Sun is dead. Apple neither needs, nor wants Java. Oracle needs Java support on the Mac so Oracle is going to pay for it. Funny what a $600 billion market cap will get you

  • What is the difference between SDK and JDK?

Which is better? Are they both free for dowload?
    Thanks.
    Virum

sdk, jdk.. same thing. Whether you call it jdk1.3.1 or j2sdk1.3.1, doesn't matter. It's the standard edition. Free for download.
There are 3 editions, micro (J2ME), standard (J2SE) and enterprise (J2EE).
The microedition is when you develop for small devices like smart cards, mobile phones, etc.
J2SE is what you would most like need, even if you also want to build enterprise applications.
J2EE is mostly for webservers, where you develop JSP, servlets, EJBs etc.

what are the differences between jdk and sdk?? thanks

    Just marketing whims.
    SDK = software development kit
    JDK = Java development kti
Sun has use both names to refer to its SDK for Java. I forget which one they're using now, but they've switched a couple of times.

What is the difference between JDK & SDK?
    its urgent.

    The first letter. That's it.
The J stands for Java, the S stands for Software.
JDK is the old name for the SDK.

  • What are the differences between api and sdk

    Hi,
Could anybody clarify for me what are the difference between API and SDK? I googled for the answer, and couldn't find any thing on this topic.
    Many thanks in advance.

Is it correct to say that "a SDK includes all the
APIs"? or "API sits on top of the SDK"?It's a bit weird to say either. First, the JDK doesn't include all APIs. Just the J2SE core API. Others, like 3rd party libraries or J2EE are not included. Second, if you mean the API docs, they're also not included IIRC.
It'd technically only be correct to say "the SDK provides an API", I guess. The example is very lame, but: if the SDK is a machine, the API is the sum of its buttons and levers and gauges and intakes and outlets and exhausts. The API docs are the manual.

  • What's the difference between Java SDK and the Enterprise Edition?

What's the difference between Java SDK and the Enterprise Edition? Are they both free?

both r free but they are used in diffrent applications. sdk are used for simple apps that run on your computer while j2e (enterprise edition) are ment for large distributed computer systems that include servers and such. if you don't know the diffrence you probably wont need the the j2e, only the sdk.

  • What is the difference between JDK and J2ee

understand the difference. You can practice on this one first. What's the difference between chalk and cheese? No just kidding.
A JDK is a set of tools for Java development including compiler, runtime system and standard libraries. J2EE is the enterprise version of the Java technology platform (it's one of three). To use it you download the proper JDK's.

What is the difference between JDK / JRE. ?
Is it enough if I installed JDK 5.0 Update 16 Only or Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 16 is also needed.
I as in the assumption that JDK 5.0 Update 16 contains the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 16.
Let me know the jdk which comes along with it jre.

what is the difference between jdk and jre
    plzz tell me in detail

It's an extremely important skill to learn how to search the web. Not only will it increase your research and development talents, it will also save you from asking questions that have already been answered numerous times before. By doing a little research before you ask a question, you'll show that you're willing to work and learn without needing to have your hand held the entire time; a quality that is seemingly rare but much appreciated by the volunteers who are willing to help you.
If you've done the research, found nothing useful, and decide to post your question, it's a great idea to tell us that you've already searched (and what methodologies you used to do your research). That way, we don't refer you back to something you've already seen.
To get you started, here is an excellent resource: The Java Glossary

i am confused - - does jdk come combined with
netbeans ?JDK is Java Development Kit. It includes all the Java APIs and Java tools like compiler etc so that you can develop code in Java language.
NetBeans is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment). It provides you tools for helping you write Java code, like it provides you a text editor where you can type your java code etc. You can use any other IDE like Eclipse JCreator etc for writing java code.
NetBeans should come packaged with a JDK. NetBeans requires JDK to function but JDK does not require NetBeans to function.
Personally, if you are so new to the language then I would recommend that you stay away from NetBeans or any other other heavy IDE for a while and code in something like WordPad or some of the other editors recommended in this thread. This will help you learn the language better. You can latter decide on an IDE when you are comfortable with the language.

  • What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords?

What is the difference between Topic Keywords and Index File Keywords? Any advantages to using one over the other? Do they appear differently in the generated index?
    RH9.0.2.271
    I'm using Webhelp

    Hi there
When you create a RoboHelp project you end up with many different ancillary files that are used to store different bits of information. Many of these files bear the name you assigned to the project at the time you created it. The index file has the project name and it ends with a .HHK file extension. (HHK meaning HTML Help Keywords)
Generally, unless you change RoboHelp's settings, you add keywords to this file and associate topics to the keywords via the Index pod. At the time you compile a CHM or generate other types of output, the file is consulted and the index is built.
As I said earlier, the default is to add keywords to the Index file until you configure RoboHelp to add the keywords to the topics themselves. Once you change this, any keyword added will become a META tag in the topic code. If your keyword is BOFFO, the META tag would look like this:
    <meta name="MS-HKWD" content="BOFFO" />
When the help is compiled or generated, the Index (.HHK) file is consulted as normal, but any topics containing keywords added in this manner are also added to the Index you end up with. From the appearance perspective, the end user woudn't know the difference or be able to tell. Heck, if all you ever did was interact with the Index pod, you, as an author wouldn't know either. Well, other than the fact that the icons appear differently.
Operationally, keywords added to the topics themselves may hold an advantage in that if you were to import these topics into other projects, the Index keywords would already be present.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • What is the difference between "Invisible" (11g) and "virtual" index?

    Hi
What is the difference between the "Invisible" index and "virtual" index?
    Thanks
    Balaji

Indexes can be visible or invisible. An invisible index is maintained by DML operations and cannot be used by the optimizer. Actually takes space, but is not to be used as part of a potential access path.
AFAIK, a virtual index is created by the tools used in SQL statement access path tuning to provide an alternative for the optimizer to test. It does not take any real space as it is a pure in memory definition.
