What's the Difference in Conversions done with ACR vs. DNG Converter?

As an experiment, on my PC workstation I just converted a set of 40 Canon CR2 files with both the free DNG Converter 6.5 and Camera Raw 6.5 (both 32 bit and 64 bit).  With Camera Raw, I dragged the files to Photoshop, then used the [Save Files] button and chose .dng format.  I chose "Medium" thumbnails in both cases.
The DNG Converter and Camera Raw 32 bit took almost twice as long as Camera Raw 64 bit (56 seconds vs. 33 seconds).
The .dng files produced by Camera Raw ended up larger than those by the DNG Converter, about 9% larger on average.
A file comparison shows that the differences are all near the start of the file, and that the latter 80% of the data is identical in all three cases.
The DNG converter files are more different from the Camera Raw files than the two different sets of Camera Raw files are from eachother.
This leads me to ask these questions:
1.  Why are the 32 bit DNG converter app and Camera Raw 32 bit plug-in so much slower than the Camera Raw 64 bit plug-in?  I have an 8 core machine, and in general don't see a 2:1 difference between equivalent 32 and 64 bit code.  It appeared by watching Task Manager that all of them were using more than one thread to do the work.
2.  Are there any plans to release a (much faster) 64 bit DNG Converter for Windows x64 users?
3.  Is there a practical / usability difference between the .dng files generated by Camera Raw vs. those generated by the DNG converter?

You can see how many CPU cores are being used by watching the performance tab with core performance separated, as long as nothing else much is going on.
Not really.  Particular threads do not normally maintain a long-term affinity for particular cores, so the usage gets spread around as Windows does its multitasking stuff and what you normally see is just activity across the board, as seen in the screen grab below (that was DNG Converter running).  Only inasmuch as the overall percentage is higher than 1/n (where n is the number of cores) can we infer a certain amount of multithreading.
And yes to both of you - every setting that I could find is perfectly consistent across the board, including compression.  And as I mentioned before, the embedded previews are coming out exactly identical, both in size and color.

  • What is the difference between sales order with picking and without picking

    hi friends,
    i would like to know what is the difference between sales order with picking and without picking.
    thanks
    skrishnan

    Hello,
    Picking refers to preparing the right quantity and quality of goods for shipping on schedule as required by the customer.
    Once picking is configured, SAP Sd automatically generates picking lists and picking labels which can be tagged to the relevant goods. SAP can be configured to ensure that picked quantity is confirmed before goods are issued. This can be done using transaction code VSTK. In T-code VSTK, picking confirmations can be set, which ensure that goods picked for delivery are in accordance with picking slips.
    Picking thus helps in monitoring each item using the picking status. Picking is normally done in SAP SD by a shipping clerk.

  • What is the difference between Ipad Air with code MD787B/A and MD787FD/A??

    Hi - what is the difference between Ipad Air with the code MD787B/A and MD787FD/A ??

    You can see the model number in Settings>General>About>Model. The model number has a two-letter code, a number and some more letters. The last part stands for the country/region. The first letter can be "F" (refurbished), "M" (normal retail), or "P" (personalized / engraved). For example MC605B is the model MC605 and B is for the region.
    What country does my device belong to?

  • What is the difference between conversion and interface?

    what is the difference between conversion and interface?

    Conversion: The legacy system may have a different representation for the data, from that of SAP. A conversion program basically aims at converting the data into a format that is acceptable for SAP.
    Whereas an interface does the actual upload of the data into the SAP system through various means.

  • What's the difference between graphics processor with 256MB and 512MB

    I'm doubting between buying the more expensive or the cheaper Macbook Pro model.
    Does someone knows the limitations I will have with the 256MB model? It is worthy to pay u$500 for the 512MB model?
    Is there any other big difference (besides the RAM size) between the 2 models that could make me decide for one or the other?
    thanks a lot for your help!

    Andresb... the $500 gets you more than just 256MB texture memory. You'll also get a slightly faster CPU with more cache, double the installed memory, and an 80gb larger hard drive.
    But sticking to your question, what does the extra video memory do? It's used by graphics intensive applications for rendering and textures, etc. I don't know of any programs that will not run if you have less than 512MB, they just won't run quite as fast.
    While you can add more memory or replace the hard drive with a bigger one at a later date, you can not increase the CPU speed, add more CPU cache, or upgrade the video memory on the machine. For a lot of people, that won't be a big deal - the question really is how much of a power user do you really think you are?
    Good luck with your decision!

  • What is the differences between running windows with parallels or boot camp?

    I am a Drafting and Design student so I need Windows for AutoDesk programs Revit and Inventor. I have a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz 16GB.

    nkriss wrote:

    A couple of differences which don't often get mentioned:
    First, in Bootcamp, the size of the partition you create for Windows is fully taken over by Bootcamp. In a virtual machine, you can give Windows 100GB for the C: drive but if you're only using 20GB on it, that's about what gets taken up on your SSD - it expands and contracts based on actual use.
    Second, a virtual machine is a file like most other files (actually, it's a collection of files in a folder) and that means you can duplicate it for backup purposes. You can also take snapshots to try things out and restore to the snapshot's state to eliminate everything done since the snapshot was taken. Try that with a real PC, or Bootcamp, which is pretty much the same thing.

  • What is the difference between an ipad with cellular and one without?

    Anyone?

    iPad with cellular will allow you to connect to the internet and email anywhere you have a cell phone signal. You can also connect to a wi-fi network.
    iPad with wifi will allow you to connect to the internet when you are within range of a wifi network.
    So if you are outside in the middle of a park, you won't be able to connect to the internet or email with the wifi only model, but you could with the cellular model. If you are at a Starbucks, you could connect to the internet or email with either model.
    Hope this helps!

  • What is the difference between contract-free(with full price) and unlocked

    that really confuses me

    In the U.S., carriers generally heavily subsidize the price of the phone. In return for selling you a phone at a loss, you agree to stay on service with them for a set period of time (generally 2 years). If you terminate service before that, you pay a hefty fee. Contract free means that the carrier is not subsidizing the price of the phone (taking a loss on it) so you, the customer are not required to sign a contract. You can cancel at any time. However, the phone is more expensive. If the phone is sold to you by a carrier, it will be locked to that carrier. Unlocking is subject to the carrier's policies.
    Unlocked phones as sold by Apple are also contract free. You can only buy an unlocked (never locked to a carrier phone) from Apple.

  • What are the difference between 4.6c and 4.7 versions?

    what are the difference between 4.6c and 4.7 versions?
    if any please give me answer

    Hi,
    Upgrade SAP or Installation of SAP R/3 and ECC
    What is ECC?  Where to find the installation steps of  ECC 5/6.0 with SQL as database and on windows platform with the steps including Solution Manager installation?
    http://service.sap.com/instguides
    ECC means Enterprise Central Component.
    There are all the relevant installation guides. You NEED SAPNet access because without a registered and licensed SolMan installation number you will not be able to generate the SolMan key for the ECC installation.
    Upgrade to 4.7
    Have you gone through an upgrade to 4.7?
    What are the difference or changes associated with 4.7.
    If you are currently on 4.6C and are inching forward to upgrading to 4.7 then this information might be useful to you.
    There is very little difference between 4.6 and 4.7, the only "steps" you should need are steps in SU25 ( skip step 1) Then go through all your role and perform a merge old new to bring in the new authorization objects
    Just to forewarn you of a potential problem which have been encounter at the point of writing.
    After updating/ modifying roles in step 2C, when going back into 2C to make sure all roles are now green, 70% have gone back to red!
    The maintenance done is ok, but there seems to be a problem while trying to go back into the roles again to re-generate.
    SAP recognizes them as needing "adjustment", so you cannot pick them up in mass generate in PFCG as they do not come in, even though the authorizations tab is red.
    This problem is currently with SAP and it is confirmed that nothing have been done wrongly.
    Generally, the work is quite manageable in the upgrade, but don't be surprised at how big the upgrade is when compared to upgrading from 46b to 46c.
    If we have full software of 46c and 47E is it possible to upgrade 46c to 47E or there is a seperate 47E upgrade software need to be requested from SAP?
    Where I can get the document with upgrade steps on the service market place?
    It is of course possible and supported:
    http://service.sap.com/inguides
    --> SAP Components
    --> SAP R/3 Enterprise
    --> (choose your version)
    at the bottom there is an "Upgrade guide" for Windows and Unix.
    For Upgrades it is recommended to read ALL the notes mentioned in the
    upgrade guide and to make sure one is using
    - the correct version of the "tp" program
    - the correct version of the "R3trans" program
    - the correct version of the "R3up" program
    All that is explained in the upgrade guide and in the corresponding notes.
    If this is your first upgrade you should take a person, that has some experience on doing that for the first time.
    Installation of SAP R/3
    Currently we are going to install SAP on a new IBM server from the existing COMPAQ server. Where can I get the steps for that.
    Configuration is :
       OS - windows 2003 server
       DB - Oracle 9i
       SAP 4.7
    http://service.sap.com/instguides
    --> SAP Components
    --> SAP R/3 Enterprise
    --> SAP R/3 Enterprise Core 4.70 / Ext. Set 2.00 (SR1)
    --> Inst. Guide - R/3 Enterprise 4.7 x 2.00 SR1 on Win: Oracle
    The above url is the SAP Service Marketplace with all the information you need to install, configure and run system. You need to be a valid licensed customer with a user ID and PASSWORD to use that.
    Without access you won't be able to successfully run any SAP systems because it has notes, patches etc.

  • What's the difference between flash storage and solid state drive in MacBook Pro?

    What's the difference between MacBook Pro with flash storage and MacBook Pro with solid state drive?

    A SSD is packaged like any other notebook drive. Flash storage uses a different design and layout that connects directly to the motherboard using PCIe. It is faster than a normal SSD.

  • Mp4v-format compared to mp4, what's the difference?

    Both mp4 and mp4v plays fine in QT but only the latter plays on ATV.
    What's the difference? Do I loose any quality when converting from mp4 to mp4v using QT. Does anyone know?

    m4v is a raw mpeg4/10 format (otherwise known as AVC or h264) and provided the file specifications such as bitrate, resolution, profile etc, fit those required by the tv they will play without a problem.
    mp4 is an mpeg container that contains either mpeg4/10 or mpeg4/2 (generally just refered to as mpeg4), again provided the file specifications such as bitrate, resolution, profile etc, fit those required by the tv they will play without a problem.
    The difference between mpeg4/10 and mpeg4/2 is mainly to do with compression, essentially mpeg4/10 files are more efficiently compressed resulting in smaller files of equal quality, or indeed similar size files with higher quality.
    In terms of the tv the main difference to remember is that mpeg4/2 files should have a datarate of 3 Mbps or less wheras meg4/10 files should be 5 Mbps or less.
    What you really need to know is why those files that wont play, wont play. You may find that simply selecting the file in itunes and choosing advanced/create Apple tv version from the itunes menu will do the trick without you having to understand why at all. If this doesn't work take a look at the specifications for the file and post them back here where we can give further advice.

  • What are the differences in file types?

    what are the differences in file types?    HOW DO i CONVERT TXT TO A FILE TYPE THAT PLAYS MUSIC/VIDEO?

    Every file on a computer is ultimately just a big collection of zeros and ones. Files with the .txt extension typically contain just text. If opened with a suitable program such as Notepad the text will be readable. Try to push the same file into a different application and you may get nonsense or crash the software. Well written software will attempt to validate the internal structure of the file it is given and reject anything it doesn't know how to handle. There are multiple audio file formats. Transcoding an audio file from one audio format to another is possible. Changing a text file into audio isn't possible unless it wasn't really a text file in the first place.

  • What is the difference between the 4th generation ipad and the ipad 3 with retnia display?

    What is the difference between the 4th generation iPad and the "New iPad with retina display"? i don't quite understand. are they stilll the same size or would i have to get a different case?

    The 3rd and 4th generation iPads are the same size. The 4 has a faster processor, and a little better iSight camera for FaceTime. The 4 also has the lightning connector so your old cable will not work with the iPad 4.
    You should always check with the manufacturer of the case to see if it will fit. You can probably do that on the manufacturers website.
