What's the difference with save as illustrator pdf vs ai?

What is the big difference between saving as an .ai versus saving as a .pdf. I like the flexibility of saving as a .pdf so that people w/o illustrator can view my comps. I know if I save as a .pdf (versus printing or exporting), I can reopen the .pdf and still have all my editing capabilities there (that i know of). Can someone enlighten me?

> What is the big difference between saving as an .ai versus saving as a .pdf.
That depends on whether you leave the default settings on. If you do, you are really saving two full and distinct copies of the entire content in one file, and the "difference" between the two files is mostly marketing-inspired hype. But if you turn off the default setting to include BOTH versions of the file, then the difference is real. AI and PDF content is not the same thing.
The two default options I refer to are:
Create PDF Compatible File (when saving as AI)
Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities (when saving as PDF)
> I like the flexibility of saving as a .pdf so that people w/o illustrator can view my comps.
That's fine. But you are really saving two complete versions of the file's content, and the PDF you are sending to your non-Illustrator recipients is much larger than necessary. That's because the PDF, by Illustrator's default, also contains another complete copy of the file in Illustrator format, which is ignored by Reader.
> I know if I save as a .pdf (versus printing or exporting), I can reopen the .pdf and still have all my editing capabilities there (that i know of).
That's fine, too. But again, that's only because you are, as stated above, saving a PDF that also contains a complete second copy of the content as Illustrator-native objects. When you open that PDF in Illustrator, Illustrator loads the native-ai content, not the PDF content.
> Can someone enlighten me?
Despite confusing marketing hype to the contrary, PDF and Illustrator formats are not the same thing.
PDF is basically like capturing the artwork halfway on its path to a PostScript printer. Illustrator-specific constructs like live blends, multiple fills, multiple strokes, (and much more), are dumbed-down to simpler discrete objects.
But a PDF file can contain a "cordoned off" area that can contain just about any kind of data a programmer wants to insert there, but which is altogether ignored by Reader. Think of it like inserting a comment statement in a code file. That extra data, of course, makes the file larger.
Similarly, Adobe changed Illustrator's format a while back to also include a "cordoned off" area that can contain PDF data. Again, that extra data makes the file larger.
When you save as PDF in Illustrator, you are saving the content of the file as "dumbed down" PDF content that can be understood by Reader. But when doing so, if you also leave the default "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checkbox on, you are also including a full copy of the file in Illustrator's native format in that "marked off" area inside the PDF. So if a recipient using Reader opens the PDF, Reader loads the PDF content and ignores the "marked off" content. If you open the PDF in Illustrator, Illustrator checks to see if you also stashed away AI-native content in that "marked off" area. If it finds that you did, it opens that version of the content, not the PDF version.
Inversely, when you save as AI, you are saving the content of the file as the fully editable Illustrator-specific constructs. But when doing so, if you also leave the "Create PDF Compatible File" checkbox on, then you will also be including another copy of the same content dumbed-down to PDF objects, and stored in .ai format's "marked off" area. If you then, for example, Place the .ai file in InDesign, InDesign in fact imports the "hidden" PDF content, not the .ai content.
The problem is, this scheme has been marketed as "equality" between Illustrator's native format and PDF format, and that has led to needless confusion. It's as if saying:
A may contain B.
Therefore A equals B.
Which, of course, is bogus. According to what I have been told, Corel, for example, could hide its fully-native Draw content within the "marked off" region of a PDF exportd from Draw. Corel could then, I guess, similarly claim that Draw and PDF are "equal."
Try this:
Open an Illustrator file. Make sure it contains some Illustrator-specific content, like a live Blend and a multi-line AreaType object. Save it as PDF, but turn off the Illustrator Editability checkbox. You have now exported the file as PDF content. Now open the PDF in Illustrator. It will open, because Illustrator can understand the simpler objects. But you'll find that the Blend is not an AI blend at all; it's just a stack of individual paths. The text object will be multiple textFrame objects, not one AreaType object with auto-wrapping text.
Now go back to the original AI document. Save it as AI, but turn off the Acrobat Compatibilty checkbox. Launch InDesign and try to Place the .ai file. InDesign will tell you it can't place the file. That's because InDesign can't really place .ai content. It can place PDF content, but there isn't a PDF version of the content in the .ai file you are trying to place.
So...
> I like the flexibility of saving as a .pdf
That's fine, so long as you are not fooled by the smoke-and-mirrors. If you allow yourself to go on thinking that PDF and AI are actually "the same thing," you'll be scratching your head as soon as you open a PDF that
doesn't happen to also contain a stashed-away version of itself in .ai-native format. (For just one example, if you ever happened to open a PDF saved by me.)

  • What Is The Difference Between Save As Self-Contained Movie and Exporting

What Is The Difference Between Save As Self-Contained Movie and Exporting a Video as a Quicktime File

Save As places the file inside a .mov container. No re-encoding.
Your still have the option to save this file as "self-contained" (all the parts travel with the file) or "reference" (small file sized movie that merely "points" to the movie parts).
A reference movie can't play if the source files can't be found. If they are moved or deleted the reference movie will fail and it can't be re-created.
Exporting is done to convert one QuickTime format to another. Typically you do this with a high quality source file. Exporting previously compressed files is a bad idea that leads to unpredictable results.
QuickTime doesn't open WMP formats without third party software help (Flip4Mac is one). You can't convert (export) WMP formats without paying extra fees to upgrade their software.

  • What is the difference between save as: Page Source & Web Archive.

    Hello,
what is the difference between save as: Page Source & Web Archive.
I want to save web pages permanently regardless if the website itself remains permanent.
What does a Page Source save and what does a Web Archive save.
Which would be best for my intentions?
    Thanks.

What does a Page Source save
Only the HTML code of the page you're looking at.
what does a Web Archive save.
The HTML source plus all objects such as images the source references. You may want to use the print to PDF feature.

  • What is the Difference with FMLE 3.1 and 3.2? having problems with my stream

What is the difference with FMLE 3.1 and 3.2?
I am having major problems with my live stream, i am currently using FMLE 3.1 and using a Imac computer.
The stream seems to be delayed by 20mins and keeps on crashing
I have a 2MB upload speed and frame rate 25.00 and bit rate 800 kbps fromat VP6
Can anyone help me with getting the settings right and what is the best computer to use to allow FMLE not to crash and stream to run smooth?
    Please Help
    Thank you

    Hello!
I would be interested in helping you with your question. You are going to need to provide a little more information about your current configuration in order for me to better understand your issue. Until then, I'll do my best to answer your quesitons.
There are subtle changes from 3.1 to 3.2. Both are stable releases. With your setup, you should be using 3.2.
Issues with FMLE typically deal with your capture card. The issues you are having sound like a streaming server issue. Stream delayed 20min? This isn't typical behavior. What streaming media server are you usign? FMS or Wowza? Define 'crashing'. Anything in the output log in FMLE or is your server 'crashing'.

What's the difference when I use iMessage vs SMS? I know iMessage is only to Apple products. So when my messages uses iMessage when I'm not connected to wifi, would it go onto my data or texting? Thanks

what if people dont know how to do that.

Send a message to an Apple user.  If it goes, it would be sent via iMessage.  If it doesn't go, your carrier does not support iMessage.
Another way is to send a message to an Apple user with just Settings > WiFi = "Off".
If it's blue or the message says "iMesage" at the top, it went via iMessage.
If it's green, it went via SMS text message.

There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.

  • When using program RFDM3000/Automatic creation of dispute cases what is the difference with the option of Automatic incoming payment and Open items?

We currently have a batch jobs running for each, automatic incoming payment and open items.  This was set up in the past and we are trying to determine what the difference is for each of these functions?  Do you need to have the automatic incoming run prior to the open items for residuals and payments on accounts?

    Hi Chris,
Program RFDM3000 creates dispute cases for residual items arising during automatic incoming payments (account statement, lockbox), during check presentation, or in postprocessing.
Alternatively, you can use the program to create dispute cases for open receivables items. You can use the selection criteria to restrict the quantity of open items (for example, using the document type and posting key for residual items from incoming payment postings).

  • Stupid PDF Question:  What's the difference between "Save As PDF" and Printing to a PDF "printer"?

    Is there a quality difference?
The "Save As" seems to run Distiller, but if I select "Print Document" and select "Adobe PDF" as the printer, it also seems to work OK, although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
Is there an advantage to running Distiller?
    Thanks!
    John
    www.controlgeek.net

    > Is there a quality difference?
I'd expect them (as well as print-to-Ps & Distill) to be the same for the same settings.
We print to Ps & Distill, for several reasons, not all of which may apply to you:
More control. Distilling provides menus for everything Adobe lets you control in PDF gen. Print/SaveAs may not (and don't in our environment).
Faster printing (Frame doesn't have to wait for the tps to pdf gen). You can get back to work while a long job renders.
Unequal versions/different platforms. We author on FM8/Unix and Distill on Acro9/PC.
    > ... although I sometimes get a "Times" font not available, will be replaced by "Times New Roman", even though I can't find any reference to "times" in my book.
Save the component files to MIF and examine with a plaintext editor. If not found, the font invocation is probably coming in with a text inset, or a graphic of type DWG, DXF, EPS, PDF or possibly SVG.

  • What is the difference with 1 Lync Standard Edition using VMware Fault Tolerant and 2 Lync Enterprise Edition in a cluster

    Hi
As I will be planning to setup Lync on a virtual environment regardless if it is going to be the Standard or Enterprise edition.
I am thinking if we use 1 Lync Standard Edition for the FE Server with Fault Tolerance enabled, would it be as good as having 2 Lync Enterprise Edition in a cluster?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
the main difference between using Lync enterprise and lync standard is the High availability and scalability feature,
you will get fault tolrance setup with one lync standard edition running on whatever hyper-v and vmware platform, however this will not be an optimum highly available solution for the simple reason that upon a host server failure the image will move
to another available host server and users will lose their active session durin the move process.
on the other hand what you will gain if you the Enterprise edition is that you will have a unique identity to which all lync clients will be connecting and this identity is the lync pool identity which is in the background handled with multiple Front-End
servers and AV conferencing pools, mediation pools and so on.
In additioin when you have multiple front-ends in place, those front-ends will not work in active/passive mode as in a regular cluster, in contrairy all the servers will be active and handeling the work load.
hope i make it a bit clear, if yiu need more info i am ready
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread
Thanks for the response, being a small environment of 300 users, standard edition would be more than enough for me but the fact for HA is very critical for me at this stage. That is why I am exploring the option of using VMware FT.
I don't quick get what you mean on the users having to move to another image as my understanding of FT is in the event of a host failure (not VM failure like bluescreen etc), the VM will fail over to another host with no lost in any ping etc.
So, in theory, the Lync Server VM would never know that the parent ESX host had failed and it needed to failover to another host. Hope my understanding is correct.
    Thanks

  • What's the difference between Save as Source or Quicktime Movie?

I'm watching some quicktime trailers that I'd like to save. There are 2 options to save the movie as a source of Quicktime Movie. They both save a quicktime, but I noticed that when saving as a quicktime movie, the file is a lot smaller. So what's different?

Save as "Source" keeps the file in its original container (.m4v, .mp4 etc.) and Save as Movie uses the .mov container.
Both versions are the same file size.
