What's the perfect new-MBP configuration for Logic?

I hope this isn't a troll.  I've been waiting, waiting WAITING for the "refresh" of the MacBook Pro (MBP) to come out so I can solve a few performance problems (including my use of Logic which really requires it to be on one of those laptop fan-stands to keep it cool).  The good news?  The "refresh" is out.  The bad news, there is a huge choice -- old-style MBP or retina-display MBP?
I think I've concluded that "old style" is the way to go -- I like to repair/upgrade my machines too much to give that option up.  So now I'm working on what to put in it.  Hence this post.  Given your experiences, what would you stick in the "perfect" old-style MBP if you were in my shoes?  Here's what I'm leaning towards.
-- Max out the non-upgradeable stuff when I buy the machine -- so...
   -- 2.7 GHz processor
   -- Hi-Res Anti-glare screen
-- Minimize the "upgradeable" bits (since I'm going to replace them with aftermarket stuff)
   -- 750GB 5400 rpm disk drive
   -- Minimum memory
-- Aftermarket upgrades
   -- Memory
   -- Disk drive
-- Replace optical drive with a flash drive
Questions:
1) Memory upgrade -- any recommendations on memory that runs cooler than other types?  My current setup started running a bit hotter when I swapped in aftermarket memory.  I'd cheerfully buy Apple memory to avoid this problem, but maybe there's an aftermarket flavor that is equally good?
2) Disk drive -- same thing, although I'm not cheerful about buying the Apple versions unless I absolutely have to.  Throughput is key, right?  Anything else I should be keeping an eye on?  Again, heat is something I'm trying to avoid.
3) Optical drive -- I am massively confused on this one.  I understand the benefits to throughput (and perhaps heat).  But which things should go where?  OS and other "static" stuff (like application programs) on the flash drive (to avoid the finite-writes problem)?  So put Logic Pro and the sound files on the flash drive (I'm thinking that's what I'm going to do)?  Put project files there too?  Recommendations on brands?  Recommendations on optical-drive replacement kits?
4) Anything else that *you're* doing to build your 2012 MBP for Logic?
Sorry if this is a troll -- I tried to find this post on the list.  If there is one, just link me into the thread.  Thanks!

The RME I use is so intuitive it knows knows my moods and often refuses to record as it knows I'm going to $uck so why bother.
It also decides on which takes to keep.

  • Which is the optimal hard drive configuration for Logic Pro ?

    hello people
i would like to ask your advices about possible hard drive configurations for Logic Pro
    I have a Mac Pro and thinking to buy 4 x 500GB drives .
there are several combinations in my mind to configure , but first of all i would like to ask which is the best for an optimal system for Logic Pro
    model 1 :
    1 stripe Raid 0 array drive for ''System'' (500+500 = 1000)
    1 stripe Raid 0 array drive for ''recording + sound banks'' (500 + 500 = 1000)
which means to using 4 hard drives as 2 drives
    model 2 :
    1 stripe Raid 0 array drive for ''System'' (500+500 = 1000)
1 Single drive for Sound banks (500)
1 Single drive for Recording (500)
which means to using 4 hard drives as 3 drives
Or , it is more healthy to use the drives as single , without raid , stripe sets but with its own capacity instead of combining .
and also if someone has an idea regarding to compare of Seagate and Westerndigital drives (which is the best for audio recording) , would be really helpfull
I am kinda rookie for these subjects :/
    thanks in advance

    heelo blayzay
thanks for the reply and assistance.
    1) how can i create a back up set for the 4th HD to be make back up of the 2nd and 3rd HD
    2) what about to make 1st HD for system and 2nd3rd4th (1.5TB) for audio recording, and an external drive for backups ?
For the back ups , is there a special process for the backing up HD (internal or external) ? Or should i just need a Clone software to make the back up
    thank you again.

  • What is the best 3d computer configuration for Lightwave 9?

I'm using at work a Intel Mac pro with Dual Core 3GHz, 4Gb RAM and ATI 256Mb Ram. I'm using LightWave 9.0 for my work and it takes a week to render an image. I would like a workstation that does the job half of the time. Can any one give the best configuration?
    Thank you
    Luis

The latest version of LightWave, version 9, takes ful advantage of Intel's multi-core processor support, yielding substantial speed improvements.
Xsan may be the magic bullet to team up multiple Xserves though.

The LightWave v9.5 Mac open beta program is currently available until upcoming final release. LightWave v9 owners can participate by registering at: http://register.newtek.com/.
Might want to participate not only to test and evaluate, but sometimes you have access to more tech support from engineering too.
According to Intel benchmark of Lightwave:
... uses well-threaded code to complete on multi-core processors much quicker than ever before.
So it should scale directly by the number of cores (and how efficient they perform).

    CPU:
Do you want to buy a new high-end Mac Pro, or look at a 'do it yourself' swap the processors for dual quad-core 3GHz? Do you go with a new system with 2.8GHz or 3.2GHz 8-core?
No, because it isn't cost effective to upgrade the cpu, not when 8-core upgrade on your system would run $1600 for 2.66GHz or $2400 for 8-core 3GHz.
    Graphics:
Sounds like you slipped the new ATI Radeon 2600XT (to replace the troublesome X1900). Today there is Radeon 3870 or Nvidia 8800GT option as after-market upgrades.
The elephant in the corner department....
    *NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600*
Featuring a massive 1.5GB frame buffer of GDDR3 memory, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 is the ultimate workstation-level graphics card. It’s ideal for industrial-strength 3D design work, modeling, animation, and stereo 3D visualization. One of the most advanced graphics cards available, it has an integrated stereo 3D port, so you can use stereo goggles for stereo-in-a-window visualization applications. With two dual-link DVI ports, you can connect two 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Displays.
    # NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB [Add *$2,850.00*]
    - only available as a Build to Order
    From Barefeats:
WHY MOST USERS SHOULD PASS ON THE $2850 QUADRO FX 5600
Though it costs 14 times as much as the GeForce 8800 GT, it is not 14 times faster.
However, the Quadro FX 5600 does feature more video memory (1.5GB vs 512MB). And, according to one Maya guru, the extra memory (and superior memory management code) of the Quadro workstation cards becomes useful for frame buffering in Maya. This is especially true for redraw of multiple views of the same complex 3D model.
This has been enhanced further by Quadro FX 5600's new integrated memory allocation which allows the card to dynamically allocate on-board RAM to whatever task is at hand rather than have specific hard wired allocations. So rather than say a maximum of 40% of total on-board RAM dedicated to the texture buffer the card can ramp up and down from 80% sharing with the immediate needs of the other buffers.

  • What's the latest news on 'waiting for items to copy' sync problem?

This has been happening for several days. I usually sync every morning and head out of the house with new podcasts to listen to during my morning commute, but lately the sync gets stuck at the final step...6 of 6, or 7 of 7...'waiting for items to copy'. I have read a lot of the posts here and don't see a real solution. The first sync I did this morning had no contacts when I cancelled the sync after 2 hrs. Upon re-syncing at the office, contacts were back in, but it is still hanging at the final stage as I write....another 2 hrs into my day (almost noon now). Has anyone heard from Apple about a Fix? This seems widespread and accross all platforms, iOS, Windows, etc....I am going to guess that it will come in a few days once they find the exact glitch in the recent software updates (very unlike Apple).

    Hi maasailand giraffe,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
First of all, thanks for the detailed notes of the troubleshooting steps you've already tried.  It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is going on in your specific case, but I do have a few more ideas for you to try.
Starting with just one of your iPads, when you get stuck on the "waiting for items to copy" step, just disconnect your iPhone.  There are probably some orphaned or corrupt files that need to be addressed.  I would suggest closing all of your open apps and then backing your iPad up to iCloud.  Then review the articles below to move or delete any big files on your device.  These can include Voice Memos (iPhone), music, photos on your camera roll, photos or videos that are attached to your Messages, email attachments, etc.

Give this a try on one of your iPads, and hopefully these steps will work for your other devices as well.

  • What is the best hard drive configuration for disk/media cache?

I just installed a 480 GB PCI SSD for my boot drive. I also have a 240 GB SSD and a 1TB 7200 rpm hd. Can anyone suggest on which drives to place my source files, aep files, media and disk cache and output for the best read/write speed? Thanks for any advice. Same question for Premiere Pro too, if you know!
I'm using a Mac Pro dual proc, 12 core, 40 GB.

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.  I would prefer not to take my old Dell laptop and just be able to use my Ipad 2 via the wireless connection that the Airport Express creates.  However, I can configure the Airport Express at home prior to leaving if that is the best thing to do.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
    Any ideas?

OK, as always I waited before downloading a new OS and I'm sure glad I did. On the APP store I sorted comments by most critical...and WHOA...what is Apple doing? No support for Logic 9, MS Office? Is Apple only trying to reach the iphone/iTouch crowd? HELP! I was going to buy a new Mac pro & two 27" monitors but until I see some real problem addressing by Apple...I'll keep what I have and see how everything pans out. If anyone has any comments to ally my fears, I welcome them. I've been a devoted Mac user since 1993. 7500; G4; G5; and my latest Mac Pro...Where do I go? Again...HELP!

    Hi there,
If you look through ALL the reviews, they are mainly good. I feel that Lion is an excellent upgrade, although not essential.
There have been some issues with MS Office, but right now, it is up to Microsoft to issue a Lion compatible update, which will come in time. Saying this, MS Office has been working fine on my mac, it seems to be an isolated issue.
Logic 9 seems like a strange issue. Again, an update looks to be coming soon, with Lion support.
I do not feel that apple only focusing on the iPhone and iPad user base. There are many features carried along, but the machine can still be used for pro tools and use just as well. It still is a fantastic, reliable, fast, easy to use OS, which I have had very few problems with. Some additions you may not use, but they don't get in the way. You will love the new Exposé, Mission Control, as it is great for pro users who have many windows open at once, and the new spaces. You may however, never use Launchpad, but you don't have to, just drag it away from the dock!
I really reccomend buying a mac with Lion, although if you are worried about bugs, wait a few months for the issues to be ironed out, and updates to be given. Because the update is so very cheap, I really think you can hardly go wrong. Try it out with your current mac, and if you like it, go ahead and buy your new ones.
Lion is fantastic, albeit maybe rushed.
    Any other queries, just ask,
    Nathan

The best is you use ASM (maybe you do it already) and put one failure group on the first disk array and the second failure group on the second array. Then you can ASM let do the work.

  • What is the reasonable battery count cycle for a new macbook pro?

what is the reasonable battery count cycle for a new macbook pro? I just bought it and i found that the count cycle for the battery is 6, is that normal?

First off, a MacBook Pro is not a Power Mac.  Power Mac is the nomenclature for Apple desktop machines prior to mid-2006.   Mac Pros also are desktops, but later than mid-2006.    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ covers Apple notebook batteries and other battery performance.  I've asked this thread be moved.

  • What is the "best" way to configure iTunes on an iMac with personal user acounts so each user can access the media library but sync devices on their personal user account?

I am trying to determine the best way to set up our imac so each user account can access the same media (songs, movies etc.) through itunes and also back up and manage their personal devices under their own personal user account.  There are 4 users on our iMac.  Me, my wife, and our 2 children.  We have built an extensive library of music/media together using the same iTunes store account.  I would like to establish a seperate apple id and iTunes store account for each of us going forward but have the ability for each of us to share our purchases.  What is the best way to configure our system and devices in order to allow shared access to media and at the same time allow for individual management of devices including contacts, apps, photos, etc. Please help, I would like to do this once!
    Thank you in advance!

OK, seeing as no-one replied (presumably because a lot of this information is on the forums in bits elsewhere) here's how I've got on so far.
Applications - just went through them.  About the only one I needed was my media server app.  Just downloaded and re-installed, had a quick look back though my email to find the license key and it all went on fine.  Installation never seemed quite right on my old machine so solved that problem too.
Movies - New iMovies just copied across the clips and projects into their respective folders.  Seems to have worked but haven't checked it all that thoroughly.  Some duplicate footage here but I can trim this out at some point when I get a chance to go through here.
Documents - Just copied these across.
Photos - used an app called iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download for free but have to pay to use the part that consolidates your libraries.  Possibly if I was willing to spend a bit more time I could have got away without using this but given I didn't know the state of my different libraries and just how many duplicates I had this was too much of a convenience to ignore.  Also got my library into a state where I can now spend a few hours organising it a bit better with Faces / Events etc.
Not attempted Music or iPhone sync yet as been stuck trying to solve a problem with my power adapter.

  • What is the benefit in using OID for names resolution?

I have been wondering about this for awhile. I have been working on getting this to work in Iplanet along with Pat Lehane ([email protected]), and it works now.
What are the benefits in using OID for names resolution when you can just use the static tnsnames.ora. Database and database names are not created dynamically and they don't change that often. Would creates a new database every day and has to worry about changing the static tnsnames.ora file. In my environment, we run Oracle applications from a server, so there is only one tnsnames.ora file, on the file server.
It would appear that using OID would cause extra traffic (LDAP lookups) on your network.
I would like some opinions from both Oracle and Oracle users. Thanks

    hi,
A benefit of using OID for names resolution is that it allows you to centralize net8 naming (i.e., tnsnames) information in the same place (OID) where other types of administrative information (about users, enterprise groups, enterprise roles, etc) gets stored. If you are more comfortable using tnsnames.ora files for net8 naming, that is perfectly fine!
An important reason that Oracle had for providing Net8 naming functionality in OID is that the legacy 'Oracle Names' functionality of Oracle 7 will eventually be desupported. This is discussed in metalink Note #135696.1 on http://metalink.oracle.com .
    Hope this helps.
