What's the plan Oracle?

We want to start supporting Linux for our products (Currently we support Sun, DEC and SGI). We've done preliminary testing. What version of Linux do we recommend and support? Redhat? SUSE? We can't support every flavor in the world. We can support one. We need one that's going to continue to be compatible with Oracle, supply bug fixes, etc. What's the Linux roadmap? Talk to us.

Richard,
Send me a note. We'll talk.

  • What is the plan for 64-bit Windows?

The 11G Express Edition Beta installed without warnings or errors on a Windows 7 64-bit virtual machine. However after install, the following error appears multiple times in the alert log:
OER 7451 in Load Indicator : Error Code = OSD-04500: illegal option specified
    O/S-Error: (OS 1) Incorrect function. !
This error is repeats every 10 seconds in the alert log.
I understand that this is most likely because of the 64-bit OS. However, it is almost impossible to buy a Windows system today that is not 64-bit. If the plan is to only provide 11G Express Edition Beta in a 32-bit version for Windows, I think it should at least install and run properly in 32-bit mode on current 64-bit Windows operating systems. Or is a 64-bit version for Windows in the works?
Thanks! It is great to see some progress on 11G Express!

I probably obscured my question with the alert log error code. I changed the subject to my real question: What is the plan for 64-bit Windows?
Since almost all windows systems are rapidly moving to 64-bit, will 11G Express be made available in a package (either 32-bit or 64-bit) which installs and runs correctly on a 64-bit windows system? Should we report 64-bit related bugs seen with the 32-bit install package so they can be fixed or is a 64-bit package coming? Thanks!

I don't dispute that you can do the install of 11G Express on a 64-bit Windows OS. It even appears to complete successfully. The database opens and you can connect to it.
However I seriously question if the underlying database processes are running correctly. My alert log is filled with hundreds of the errors that I listed in my original post.
If you have posted that you have a successful install on 64-bit Windows, could you please check your alert log and let us know if you are seeing errors, or if everything is running correctly. The alert log is the main error log for the database. You can find it in C:\OracleXE\app\oracle\diag\rdbms\xe\xe\trace\alert_xe.log. Open this file in notepad and check for errors.
Based on the errors that I am seeing, I ask again: What is the plan for 64-bit Windows? Does anyone from Oracle moderate this forum? Is 11G XE supposed to run correctly on 64-bit Windows, or what is the plan for supporting the almost universal move to 64-bit windows operating systems?
    Thanks!

  • What is the latest Oracle 10g AS release?

What is the latest Oracle 10g AS release?

    Depends on what you want
    Oracle WebLogic Server 10.3
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/index.html
Application Server 10gR3 (10.1.3.3) has J2EE, SOA, BPEL, Etc
Look at the above URL at the bottom for prior Releases. This is listed as "Application Server 10gR3 (10.1.3.3)"
Full Application Server, including BI, Forms, Identitiy Management, J2EE, etc is Application Server 10gR2 (10.1.2.0.2) & can also be found at the same URL at the bottom under Releases name "Application Server 10gR2 (10.1.2.0.2)"
Note 10gR2 is very buggy. There are complete patches for it to bring it to 10.1.2.2 & 10.1.2.3 to patch everything but BI & seperate BI patches along with a host of Critical Patch Updates. I recommend patching to 10.1.2.2 with latest CPU patch & cumulative Discoverer Patch (if you plan on using BI)

  • What is the OMS(Oracle Management Server) ?

    Hi All,
Anyone can explain me what is the OMS (Oracle Management Server)
in Oracle Enterprise Manager(OEM),may be it is the server where OEM resided on when install program I'm not sure?
    Thank you,
    Mcka

Enterprise manager has two ways of operating: direct attach and three-tier
In Oracle9i, the direct attach is 'stand alone console'. In 10g it is 'db console'
In Oracle9i, the three tier is using an OMS. In 10g, it is called the grid control.
Basically the OMS or Grid Control has the following configuration:
    - On each database server, there is an Enterprise Manager Agent. It 'manages' all database instances on that server;
    - there is a central application server (Oracle Management Server/OMS) that communicates with all agents. It tells the agent to performan actions (such as collecting operating stats) and it gets the results from those actions;
    - there is a central OMS repository (schema in a database) used the the OMS, that is used to store configuration and information retrieved by the agents;
    - the OMS responds to user (administrator) requests from the [9i] java console or the [10g] browser. The requested information may be retrieved from the repository or retrieved in real time directly from the instance via the agent.
The OMS can be installed on any machine. The OMS repository can be installed on any machine with a database instance.
Often the database, the OMS and the OMS repository are both installed on a single 'DBA-only machine'. (This makes sense as the information collected could have a SarbOx impact.)

  • What are the tables Oracle EBS connector can connect to?

    Hello,
    Requirement
As part of the project requirement for Oracle EBS application, we have the concept of BUYER account (PO_AGENTS) and Supplier account (PO_VENDORS). When the account has to be disabled from FND_USER and HR foundation table, the account has to be disabled (or removed based on the requirement) from all linked tables "PO_VENDORS" and "PO_AGENTS".
    Questions
    1) Does the out of the box Oracle EBS connector handles removing users from the tables "PO_AGENTS" and "PO_VENDORS" apart from "FND_Users" and "HR foundation" table?
    2) If no, what are the recommendations for achieving the above requirement?
    Thank You!

No, OOTB the connector will not revoke the user entry from tables like PO_AGENTS etc .. You can customize the connector to do that .
Explore the stored procedure which can revoke entries from the mentioned tables and wire it via a adapter .

    Suren

  • What is the equivalent Oracle datatype for the access Memo type?

    Yep. Look at this example:
    SQL>create table x(y clob);
    Table created.
    SQL>insert into x values (
2  'This is a very long string
3  and that was an carriage return - entered in notepad'
      4  )
      5  /
    1 row created.
    SQL>select * from x;
    Y
This is a very long string

  • What is the new Oracle exame that just showed up on Pearson vue today called - Exam:1Z1-006: Oracle Database Foundations?

    Hi,
I just saw a new beta exam show up today (Thursday, April 23th) on Pearson Vue called
    1z1-006 Oracle Database Foundations?
Is this an OCA, OCP, OCE, or OCS?
    Is this exam for teaching?
    Is this exam for design.
    Help me
    Roger

I guess exam content is speculation (unless insider knowledge is available ... in which case an NDA would be in force) until Oracle publishes some information, and perhaps until we can see the exam topics.
In essence Pearson Vue knows nothing about how exams link to form certifications, however it's website  can sometimes get exam scheduling updates a little before they arrive on the oracle website.
Any information from Oracle is likely to appear here: New and Upcoming Releases
... or if/when this link becomes active: Exam 1Z0-106 (NB: wrong link ... Matthew has a good link above)
.... And I guess an Oracle Certification blog entry too will be likely.
.... Various people have on this forum commented on the downsides of 1z0-051/1z0-061 as an entry point into Oracle RDBMS Database with 'SQL' rather than 'RDBMS' being the focus point.  ( IMHO These exams do a good job of examining Oracle SQL .... ).
If non database (Oracle Enterprise) specific if would also be applicable to MySQL, RDB, .... etc).
It will be interesting to see how and where Oracle views where this exam will sit, who its target candidates are and what certification(s) it will participate in ..... I Codd you not  !
Added 03may2015: Realised some glaring deficiencies in this post by getting the code mixed up between 1z0-106/1z0-006 .... any that Matthew had gvien the correct link earlier!  I have only just pulled my head out of the bucket.

  • What is the plan with TeXLive?

After struggling for almost a year to get the TeXLive packages from community to work on my system, I am left wondering if there is any real plan to have TeXLive replace tetex in ArchLinux. TeXLive 2007 has been out over a year and there are still bugs in the packages that are not present when doing a standard DVD iso install from over a year ago.
While I think firmicus has done an excellent job creating the initial set of TeXLive packages; I fear there are not enough people doing debugging on these packages, when tetex still sits in core as the default latex installation mechanism. TeXLive requires a lot of testing and debugging (debian has a taskforce for it) and having only a handful of people testing these packages still is leaving many bugs unchecked even though these packages have been out for months.
I am hoping that the testing for TeXLive 2008 is handled in a more systematic way when it is released this summer; and that maybe, the devs will consider formally replacing tetex as it ceased development back in 2006.

ConnorBehan wrote:But anyway that's beside the point... the package I wanted was pidgin-latex and I looked at the dependencies and saw "tetex" so I installed "tetex." I wasn't thinking about how many TeX implementations were available and the current status of each one, I was just blatantly reading dependencies and installing them. As a result I got stuck with an unmaintained obsolete package and didn't even realize it until about 4 months later.
Just to clarify: tetex is unmaintaned, by it is by no means obsolete.
As far as binaries go: *the tex language* itself was frozen in 1989 by its author, Donald Knuth. The only things that evolve are some of its extensions, most notably pdftex. Moreover, the only visible difference I was able to track down since pdftex shipped with tetex to now is that when you include certain types of pictures (some jpg's or png's or pdf's), they render a bit better in the new one than in the old one. With the new tl2008 should come luatex, ok, but that's still a new stuff and people using it definitely know about texlive/tetex difference.
So for instance, for pidgin-latex it makes *no difference* whether you have tetex or texlive installed.
As far as packages go: yes, they evolve, but slowly. For instance for writing papers (eg. in most of mathematics) it makes no difference whether you're using tetex of texlive.
I don't mean to say that we should not move in the direction of eventually replacing tetex with texlive completely (and I'm willing to contribute); I just don't like when I see screams "tetex is obsolete! we must ditch it immediately! all the dev/user power to test texlive!", without *an example* why it's actually worth the effort (except for repeating "tetex is obsolete!"). After asking this in the original texlive thread someone actually produced an example (with the included pictures, as mentioned above), but that's the only one when someone actually *needed* to use newer pdftex.
    EDIT:
Stefan Hussmann wrote:'Oh, that package is official, let us take that.' So moving it to unsupported would be a good step.
I'm all in for that. Nevertheless, I think people care less about extra/community, and more about the dependencies (like ConnorBehan noted).

Oracle Table Queue data enqueuing Max limit?

If you are refering to data volumes, then it is determined by the storage clause of the queue table.
There is no generic throughput rate.
The max throughput is heavily dependent on I/O throughput (esp. redo), available block buffers, available CPU, number of rollback segments.
Other things such as the number of enqueuers/dequeuers, number of queues, INITRANS/FREELISTS storage parameters, are significant too.

  • What are the plans for KDE4 becoming one of the mainstream Sol10 desktops

I have been monitoring the developments in the KDE arena and the results are very interesting. KDE 4.0 (or even the latest Gnome) desktops are way more usable and convenient than the current gnome desktop that comes with the stock Solaris 10 distribution.
I wish that the mainstream Solaris 10 Desktop would at least incorporate the latest Gnome and if possible a recent KDE desktops. I understand that KDE relies on QT which is a licensed product. It would be interesting if some sort of Academic licensing would be available for solaris 10 desktop users in academic institutions.
    thanks
    Michael

Currently, the three Ultra 45 workstations I have for use are now converted to light servers. It seems that I cannot tighten the GNOME desktop security issues to get them to pass security requirements for workstations. I cannot get the browser (Firefox) and email (Thunderbird) to a version level that will pass IAVA alerts. When I remove them as packages and add from "Blastwave" or "Sunfreeware" the dependencies (GTK+, libs) cannot be updated to support the versions.
I real from Allen Pae (Check Spelling) that Sun really does not care about desktops since all of us “Admins” come in for CLI work anyway. That is true, but then we have to go back to a Windows desktop to do any of the ancillary reports. So we have to “PuTTY” in with “Hummingbird” (for GUI) instead of doing “admin” work from a Solaris 10 workstation. (I do think there could be advantages in doing this.)
I would like a desktop that can be secured and meet IAVA requirements.

  • IOS 6 w/ iphone 4 now doesn't show information on bluetooth music sync pioneer.  What's the plan on this fix, buy another phone?  Become a part of the commercial from Samsung bashing this pointless updates?

pioneer avh-3400bh, just got it installed, read reviews online about bluetooth music information no longer showing up after ios6 update....... any clue to when Apple will either fix this error or allow people to go back to older versions of operating systems?

FINALLY! a firmware update came out today for the 3400BH (among others) - I got an email from PIoneer and downloaded and installed the new firmware - now the radio works perfect! The only problem is, you can only install the firmware update via bluetooth PC, which is NOT as easy as the instrucions show - if you have a bluetooth dongle (like I do) there were several issues during the install - finally got it installed (not quite sure how exactly) but it works.
