What's the point with cellular on iPad mini if you can't make calls?

Most people today have smartphones and all smartphones have built in portable routers that can be connected to any Wi-Fi device, like an iPad. So when I saw that the iPad Mini had both just Wi-Fi or both Wi-Fi and cellular I bought the one with cellular because naturally I thought you'd be able to use it as a cell phone as well. So since the SIM card is just used for data connection, then it's a wast of money to have the iPad with cellular. The Wi-Fi is enough if you have a smartphone because then you can just use it as a portable wireless router. That's what I was doing before I was dumb enough to upgrade my Wi-Fi iPad to the one with cellular as well. Should have asked about that before I upgraded since making regular phone calls and having SMS capabilities were the main reason I got the one with cellular so I didn't have to have both my phone and iPad with me. How can you have cellular features and not be able to call?

That is speculation on your part.  Many people do not have smartphones - according to news groups like Gartner, only about 40% of global mobile phone sales are smart phones, so the majority of people do not, in fact, have smartphones.
Second, many of us with smartphones, do not have tethering plans, and do not want tethering plans.  Many people only use or need the cellular connectivity of their iPad or tablet occasionally, so why pay a much more expensive monthly fee for a tethering plan when you can just enable the cellular data on the iPad when needed, and only for as long as needed?  Adding a tethering enabled data plan on your smart phone can be awefully expensive if you only occasionaly actually use tethering - why pay for something you are not using?
Its true that most iPads sold are in fact wifi-only, and even of the 3G and LTE units sold, many never activate service.  So it would appear that few actually use cellular data.  However, I am sure there are people who do - and having to tether all the time to another device every time you need cellular data would likely be a real annoyance for some true road warriors who are often in places without free wifi.
And you can make calls on your iPad - you just need to use a VOIP service and client.

  • I am extremely upset. I purchased my iPad in SA and I am traveling in Greece. When I want to make use of the free apps, I get a message that the app is not available in the SA store. What is the point of having an iPad if you cannot use it worldwide?

I am extremely upset. I purchased my iPad in SA and now I am in Greece. I cannot download free apps as I get a message that the apps are not available in the SA store and only in US stores. When I change to the US store the same thing happens. What is the point of having an iPad if I cannot use it worldwide??? I feel that I wasted my money purchasing it as I specifically purchased it to use when I travel. How can I get access to all the available apps and why are they restricted.

You can use your iPad worldwide. However, each AppleID is tied to
a specific country's store. To use the AppStore in any country, you
must be in that country and have a credit/debit card issued by a financial
institution in that country with a verified billing address in that country.
It is the developer's choice which AppStores he makes his app available
from, and some countries prohibit certain apps.
To make a purchase from the US store (including downloading a free app
available in the US store), you must be in the US and have card issued
in the US with verified billing address in the US.
You can use your purchases from the SA store worldwide, but you
cannot make purchases in other than the SA store unless you meet
    the aforesaid conditions.

As Phil said, iPad mini is smaller; for most, it fits in one hand. It also has a better camera, and can take advantage of more software features like Siri.

How is it a security breach? You're free to turn off lock screen notifications for the phone app so that no one can do that.... even if they can, they can only call the number that called you... nothing else. (well, except for 900 or whatever the emergency services number is where you are, but that's required by law).

iPads are not "locked". Get an iPad data plan and sim card from a local provider and connect to their 3G/LTE service.

  • What's the point with Spaces?

I use F9 very frequently to see which windows/how many windows are open. Works great! So why bother with this new "great" app called Spaces? What's the point?

Reasons for me include to help me focus by reducing visual clutter and organise running applications by task.
I've just recently discovered there is a single application mode for the dock. (Is this Leopard only? I'll kick myself if it was in Tiger!) This can be a good alternative to spaces as it's visual clutter that bothers me most. To easily enable this install the freeware Secrets http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27025

  • What is the maximum number of Apple TVs (3rd gen) you can connect to 1 Mac running iTunes?

I have one Mac with my digital library running iTunes 11 and seem to be having problems keeping Apple TVs connected (via home sharing) when I get up around 10 Apple TVs on the network.
The Mac is running Mountain Lion with all software updates installed, iTunes 11, and the Apple TVs are all running 5.1.1 (the latest at this time).
I am not asking how many computers can authorize via iTunes to use the same Apple ID - that answer is 5. I have read in multiple places that the number of devices (e.g. Apple TVs, iPods, iPads - not computers) that can sync content to an iTunes account is unlimited, but I don't think that's entirely true.
I'd like to keep this conversation about the number of Apple TVs you can have home shared to a single Mac / iTunes library via home sharing.
I am also not asking how many a network could support via concurrent streaming, etc. That's not relevant. We only use 1-3 Apple TVs at any given time simultaneously, and streaming simultaneously to as many as 3 Apple TVs hasn't ever been a problem.
I recently upgraded all my Apple TVs in this house to generation 3 units - I have 12 of them in all, but once I connected about 10 of them I started having problems (at least I think it was 10).
Does anyone know the official limitation (if there is one) ?
The problem that I am having is that even though I have a great Wi-Fi N or wired gigabit connection at each Apple TV, and the correct home sharing Apple ID on each Apple TV and iTunes on the Mac, when I try to access "Computers" via the Apple TV menu, I get this error:
Could not connect to "My Library": Make sure the computer is on the same network as your Apple TV, the iTunes version is up to date, and iTunes is running.
Now if I restart iTunes, I can get the Apple TV I am currently troubleshooting to connect, but then if I go to a different Apple TV, it gives me the same error. Restarting Apple TVs doesn't fix it, only restarting iTunes seems to. But I can't seem to get multiple units to see the Library simultaneously.
Thanks to anyone who provides help on this.

Apple TV is by it self in a category.
With Apple TV 1 the limit was 5 Apple clearly stated that. The reason? Probably because the Apple TV 1 had a hard drive and was able to store content locally (quite a bit actually). This would make it more in line with authorized devices.
You authorized device limit is 5 but this does not pertain to home sharing again something different.
When you play content from an Apple TV you are streaming from an authorized device and as long as you have the same iTunes account on that Apple TV as the iTunes you are connecting to you will be ok.
Now to the error. I have also had this error and I had it on a network with only 1 Apple TV connected and it is since iTunes 11. It seems every time Apple updates iTunes it has a bad effect on Apple TV. So I would not relate this error to the number of Apple TV's you have, every time I get this error I restart the Apple TV and its fine again.
On a side not I used to run MANY Apple TV's off my xserver. I had my families homes networked with VPN. I would prefer to not say how many but it was quite a few. biggest problem there was multicast over VPN....whole other story.

  • On my iPad Mini (2013), How can I make it so, only my downloaded music is shown in the Music app, and not old music I haven't downloaded/ don't want on my iPad?

When I enter the music app, I just want to listen to the music that I've downloaded onto my device, not old music I don't want, but is still shown for streaming. Any help/ideas? I don't want to have to go offline just to listen to the music I want to listen to everytime

Why would you have to go offline to listen to music? Dosn't make sense.
However, you can set the app up to just show you tracks that are actually on the device: Settings app > Music > Show All Muisc [turn OFF]

Hello, I think you're out of luck with the toolbar, but not on 10.9 to check right now, you can change the minimum font size used in Safari Prefereces for web pages.

There are lots of people who would answer that there is no point to Game Center at all. But that would just be an opinion.
