What's the procedure to unlock iphone 3GS?

I have an iPhon 3GS with iOS 5.1.1.
I am changing from operator A to operator B.
I have received the new sim card from operator B while th eone from operator B is now inactive.
I have requested operator A to unlock my iPhone, normally he did so.
When I insert the sim card of operator B into my iPhone, the iPhone tells me either 'No network avaialble' or unvalid sim card.
I have tried to connect the phone to iTunes with the old and the new sim cards, that does not make anything, iTunes recognizes my iPhone but does not ask for anything to change.
Any idea what could be the root cause and the fix?

However, I called the Apple support center. They told me to first install iTunes v11 (I had v10 before).
I did so. They told me the iPhone had been properly unlocked.
After this, I inserted the new sim card into the phone (not connected to the PC), and strange enough this time told me I had to activate the phone which I did thru WLAN. After this, I got the network signal from the new carrier. That's it.
I had no need to connect to iTunes.

The 3GS is not listed in the supported list for iOS7. Unless Apple comes out with a major bug fix, 6.1.3 will likely be the last update for it.

Not all features are available but you can update to IOS 6.1.3 for your iPhone 3GS.

Ragazzi, io ho avuto lo stesso problema ieri sera. Dopo svariati tentativi, leggedo su di un altro post simile sempre in questa comunità. La password richiesta non è altro che la password di accesso del vostro pc. Lasciate perdere quella user dell'id apple ecc io ho fatto mille tentativi. Appena immessa la password della macchina il ripristino è partito correttamente ed ora il mio iphone 4 funziona di nuovo!

i want to know what is the difference between unlocked iphone and contract free iphon?

Unlocked means that you can use any sim card in the phone all the time and keep swapping and the phone will still work. You will pay full price for the phone.
Contract actually means that you will buy the phone for the full price, but the phone will then become locked to the first carrier whos sim card you insert into the phone and if you want to use another sim card, you'll need to get the phone unlocked from that carrier.
If you want an unlocked phone, then buy an unlocked phone and not a contract free phone - if you pay full price for the phone it's a no brainer to buy anything less.

A: There is no such thing as an unlocked iPhone 3Gs in the United States. ALL iPhone 3Gs's sold in the US are locked to AT&T. AT&T will NOT unlock iPhones, therefore it is not legitimately unlocked.
B: Sprint is a CDMA network as others have mentioned. They do NOT use SIM cards. The iPhone 3Gs will NEVER work on Sprint. Ever. It's not physically possible.
Either your Uncle misunderstood or he was mislead. Send it back and tell him to get his money back. Buy an iPhone in India from a supported carrier.

What I meant to say is that technically, hardware-wise, almost all iphones 3GS are the same (I believe the models in mainland China don't have GPS?).
It's no WiFi in China. GPS used to be illegal in Egypt, but they changed the law recently.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I suppose that the carrier lock is a software lock, which can be removed (we've all heard about it), but gets reversed once you update to a new OS version.
Carriers can ask Apple to unlock particular phones. The next time the iPhone is restored via iTunes, new firmware will be downloaded from Apple and will display a message saying it has been unlocked. It will stay unlocked if updated. Unofficial unlocks (which can not be done on current iPhones) will re-lock if the iPhone is updated.
I know it is the way it is, but I believe most of you would agree that if you buy a telephone, you shouldn't be forced to go with one carrier or another. That is why when I pay for an unlocked phone, I pay much more, go get the freedom (without hacks) to choose the carrier I want (where in contrast I pay much less for calls and internet than with the exclusive iphone carrier).
It would be much easier for Apple if all iPhones were unlocked, and the same in all countries, but the carriers make a fortune from their exorbitant roaming charges, so where the country's laws allow, insist that Apple not make any unlocked iPhones available in their countries.
By the way, MMS is not something most people use. There are some statistics on the internet about the ratio of SMS to MMS and it was something like 10 to 1.

There is no such thing as an unlock code. Sprint may have processed the unlock, and then requested you restore the iPhone using iTunes to complete it. But that's it. There is no code to enter, and nowhere to enter it any way.

In iTunes if you have your contacts synced to Address Book just open address book on your computer and start editing.

Connect the iPhone to your Mac with its USB cable and launch iPhoto. In iPhoto you can select which files to upload into the library. Once in the library export them out of iPhoto to a folder on the Desktop via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export with Kind=Original. That will give you copies of the videos in the folder for use outside of iPhoto.
If you want to bypass importing into iPhoto try launching Image Capture and manually upload the selected video files to the folder of your choice.
