What's the purpose of OSX Server on a Mac Mini?

What's the purpose of OSX Server on a Mac Mini? Is it to make it a Media server?
Thanks,
Jeff

Mac Mini makes a good workgroup server, classroom server, web server, DNS server, authentication server, or... Pretty much any time you want a small and quiet computer for a particular task. And for typical tasks (web and DNS and...) you can roll several together onto a single box, and can run (for instance) two as paired DNS and Open Directory servers.
Mac OS X Server works nicely on most any of the Mac Mini boxes, too, while the Mac Mini Server does have a better price here and a configuration that's more targeted at server-oriented uses. The MMS adds RAID in particular, though that could be added onto the previous servers using external storage and FireWire.
If you want a media server, then you don't necessarily need Mac OS X Server, you can do nicely with Mac OS X client and connections to whatever you want to use for media; digital TV or whatever. Front Row works OK here, and EyeTV is very nice.

  • What Is the purpose Of DI SERVER

    Hai Experts . I am New user to this concept. but i  know fundamental . can any one tell me..

    Hi,
    The purpose of the DI server is to allow XML commands be sent through this server to access the Business One database. Generally the DI Server would be used for web based implementations or for scenarios where a large number of connections must be handled efficiently.
    I would suggest checking the SDK help centre (installed by default with the Business One SDK) for more detailed information - there is a great introduction there.

  • How do i remove  osx server from my mac mini and just run mac osx lion

    i don'r wish to run osx server just osx lion. how do i remove the server software?

    One possibility is to obtain the DMG for OS X Lion, boot from it and reinstall the client version.
    In my past experience, you'll keep the OS X Lion Server recovery partition, but you will most definitely be running OS X Lion without the server software deployed.
    (I'm not sure if you can uninstall the Server software from a Mac Mini Server -- this appears to be integrated with the OS)

  • What's the best set up with AppleTV and Mac Mini with 2TB external HD?

    Hi
    I have an Apple TV and 2TB external HD connected to my Mac Mini.
    I want to stream through my Mac Mini and I want all my media stored in my external HD.
    What's the best setting so that I sync only one way to my external HD the contents of my Apple TV? I don't want anything except unwatched media on my Apple TV.
    I'm fairly new to Mac world and Apple TV, as far as I read iTunes and Apple TV sync both ways,how do I achieve a one way sync to my Mac Mini with external HD?
    Many thanks

    Ok that makes it clear, sorry I used wrong terminology,it should have been transfer rather than sync.
    You don't want to stop transfers of purchased content. See This User Tip
    While on the subject a friend of mine told me that the streaming videos doesn't work well,it kinda freezes and stops but the music stream is fine. Is that true or his set up is wrong?
    It's not necessarily his configuration set up that's wrong, it's probably that he has a poor network by virtue of too great a distance or interference from other networks or other household equipment.

  • What is the best way/quality of connecting my Mac Mini to an external HiFi system?

    Hello,
    I am using my Mac Mini for storing and playing music using iTunes.
    In terms of audio quality, what would be the best option for connecting the Mac Mini to my external HiFi system?
    1) Using an optical cable?
    2) Using a analog cable?
    3) Using a USB connected DAC? (maybe the best option but surely the most expensive)
    If the option 3 is only the good one, would suggest a DAC product?
    Thx for your help
    Best Regards,
    -- Jean-Baptiste

    The optical output is capable of doing 5.1 surround sound (as well as 2.1 or basic stereo) and is therefore more than capable of fully supporting lossless audio formats like AIFF, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless as well as all DVD audio formats. The optical (TOS-Link) interface is not capable of fully supporting the higher end audio standards supported by Blu-Ray discs.
    For full Blu-Ray support you would have to use a HDMI interface.
    So with regards to purely CD sourced material and even potentially DVD-A (DVD Audio discs), and SACD (Super Audio CD) it should be fine.
    Some anally retentive audio fanatics will say that potentially some of the signal can be lost over a TOS-Link optical connection and they would insist on having an audio interface to act as a dedicated DAC (Digital Audio Convertor) with direct links to the speakers. I would say ordinary humans will be more than happy with a lossless audio format being sent over an optical link which will definately be superior to AAC over a copper wired link.

  • What is the best external dvd drive for my Mac Mini

    I have a new Mac Mini i5 and i would like to know what is the best external dvd writer to get. I would like to burn mo

    The Apple USB superdrive would be a great choice for you, ( http://store.apple.com/ca/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f ) I am not certain but I am pretty sure that it has the same form factor as the MacMini (Not thickness but all the other dimenetions) so it fits just under and looks like an extension of your mac.

    Look again at the specs, the port is actually a line level input

  • What is the best connection method for early 2009 mac mini to 27" Monoprice monitor

    I just ordered the new monoprice 27" LCD display. It has displayport 1.2 and hdmi inputs as well as Dula Link DVI. It also has two onboard speakerd with a small amp. So before i plunk down $99 for a dual ink converter cable...how shuld i connect his monitor? And can i get audio to it as well for the speakers?

    I would love this to be true, but Monoprice is saying i need to go with the Dul link DVI cable. But i may try this first since its not only cheaper, but i read horror stories about the Dual Link DVI cable.

  • What is the use of SIM Card slot in HP Mini 110-3605tu ?

    I have purchased HP Mini 110 3605TU in the M/o May-2011,
    Yesterday suddenly I found a SIMcard Slot beneath Battery .
    When I inserted SIM Card in it does not work .
    What is the purpose of this Slot.
    epat, Haryana, INDIA

    Some mini's have the sim slot but they are not operational, check the bios or system specs to see if it is supported on that specific model.
    This slot allows you to connect to the internet using cell towers, you have to have a mini model that supports this and you have to have a special sim card from your cell phone provider for it to work.

  • I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

    I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

    It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
    On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
    Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
    All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
    I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
    There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
    Click to view full size
    However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
    It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
    Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
    This might be of some interest to you at this time: Life After MobileMe.

  • What is the purpose of open/close connection data socket?

    Hello everyone,
    I am writing and reading values in OPC Server through data socket. What is the purpose of open/close connection data socket when writing /reading a value?  Without the open/close connection element, it still work correctly. I am writing values in the server thru event stucture.I do not need any buffered reading or writing. What will happen if I didnt not use the open/close connection? Maybe it may cause some problems in my program which i didnt realise?
    And I have attached an example of my program. Thanks

    Hi YehChia,
    I was talking about something like that:
    1. Not good. since with every iteration the DS connection needs to be opened and closed.
    2. Good. Since you open the connection only once then do the reads and close it afterwords.

  • What is the purpose of standby redo log files

    Hi,
    What is the purpose of the standby redo log files in DR?
    what if the standby redo log files are created? or else not created?
    Please explain
    Thanks

    3.1.3 Configure a Standby Redo LogA standby redo log is required for the maximum protection and maximum availability modes and the LGWR ASYNC transport mode is recommended for all databases. Data Guard can recover and apply more redo data from a standby redo log than from archived redo log files alone.
    You should plan the standby redo log configuration and create all required log groups and group members when you create the standby database. For increased availability, consider multiplexing the standby redo log files, similar to the way that online redo log files are multiplexed.>

  • What is the purpose of odbcinst.ini?

    I have installed unixODBC.x86_64 (2.2.14) and mysql-connector-odbc-5.3.4-linux-el6-x85-64 on Oracle Linux Server 6.5 64 bit with Oracle 12c and MySQL Community Server 5..6.14.
    I wonder what is the purpose of odbcinst.ini since the odbc driver is already configured in odbc.ini.
    ODBC.ini has the following configuration:
    [myodbc5]
    Driver          = /tmp/shared/mysql-odbc/lib/libmyodbc5w.so
    DATABASE        = peter
    DESCRIPTION     = MySQL ODBC 5.3 Unicode Driver
    SERVER          = localhost
    UID             = peter
    PASSWORD        = peter
    SOCKET          = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

    This is really a question more specific to the ODBC driver itself and really should be asked in that forum.
    The purpose of an odbcinst.ini file is to list all installed drivers. The syntax is; a name followed by a property which tells us the drivers file name. For example;
    [Sybase 11]
    Comment = Super Duper Sybase Server
    Driver =  /usr/lib/libsybase.so.11
    Setup = /usr/lib/libsybaseS.so.11
    FileUsage = 1
    Botton line is you need to have a working ODBC connection for DG4ODBC to work.
