What's the question mark mean?

I normally hook up to broadband just by plugging my laptop in, but now when I try and open firefox a question mark just appears over the icon (same with messenger) and no other browser will open either.
It's not the interenet connection, so what do I need to do to my computer so it connects again?

Hi anii,
Welcome to the Discussions.
Are these icons in the Dock? Did you move your browsers from the Applications folder? To restore them, click on them and drag them off of the Dock...poof! Open the folder containing the applications and drag their icons to the Dock.

    Friendly advice. Rethink your question. I have a very hard time understanding what you are asking about.

    what does the question mark in upper left hand corner mean

    Do you mean on a thumbnail in the organizer?That means that organizer has lost track of the original file. Usually that happens when you've done something with the photo outside of organizer, like moved it or deleted the original. If you want organizer to be able to keep track of your photos, you need to do all moving and deleting from within the organizer, not in Windows Explorer or the Mac Finder.

  • HT203254 What is the question mark when I turn on the power?

    When I turn on the power, it doesn't work but the question mark appears. What am I supposed to do?  (question mark inside of a file mark)

    The question mark means the system can't find anything to boot from. See this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440?viewlocale=en_US
    You didn't specify your operating system, so if you have Lion, go into Lion recovery by booting and holding the command and R keys down to access Disk Utiity to repair the disk.

  • I am looking for a description of the columns in the song "window" for iTunes 11.  What does the check mark mean?

    Why does apple make this so difficult.  I just want to know what the check mark column means in the song "window" of itunes 11.  How does it relate to iCloud?  When I click on a song, it disappears.

    under usage-i only have the camera roll, photo library and photostream-they don't show the individual albums withing my libraries-if i delete library-i would delete about 12 albums
    I don't sync pics but was hoping the albums showed up there.  It was a long shot.

  • I'm new to the ipod thing, what do the check marks mean?

    I'm sorry to bother people with this simple questions, but I looked all throught the tutorial and coudn't find the explanation for the check marks in the boxes in front of the song titles

    In iTunes the "Check marks" serve 2 porpuses.
    1) If you have a song unchecked it will not play. Lets say you have a playlist with 4 songs, and you uncheck the 3rd one, well when its playing it will play track 1, track 2 then skip track 3 and play track 4. If all songs are unchecked, the second the first song is dome playing it just stops playing any songs til you select one.
    2) If you have an iPod AND your iPod preferences are set to "Only Update checked songs" all songs without a checkmark are not added to your iPod, this is good for songs you don't really like or seasonal songs like xmas songs. To set this on an iPod, connect it to the PC, rightclick the iPod in iTunes, hit "Ipod options" then check the box beside "Update only checked songs"

  • What does the question folder mean?

    When my macbook starts up I get a question folder before the apple logo and the swirl thing can someone tell me if this is right didnt do it before ..? Is it looking for something or checking something out ...
    Thanks

    The question folder actually means that your MacBook is looking for an OS to start from and there is no default OS set. To get rid of it go to the Startup Disk System Preference and select the OS you wish to start from by default.

  • What does the question mark and the semi-colon do in the following code

    public void set(int index, Object value) {
        int j;          // loop index
        int newLength;  // new size of array, if required
        if ( index < 0 )
          throw new ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException(index);
        else {
          if ( index >= objs.length ) {

          } // end if
          if ( index >= size ) {
            size = index + 1;

  • I have many photos that are visible as thumbnails in the Pictures Library, however when I try to open them in a big screen they show a back screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle.  What does this exclamation mark mean ?

    I can see my images in the libarary as thumbnails but when i try to edit/email some of them become Exclamation Marks in a triangle.
    What does the exclamation mark mean and how to i retrieve the photo

    The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
    Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • What does the folder with a question mark mean?

    When I power on my black Macbook a white screen appears with a folder with a question mark flashing. what does the folder with a question mark mean? I just replaced the hard drive. When I put the install disc in the cd drive makes a very loud whirring noise then eventually the disc pops back out. Any ideas?

    You will need to reinstall:
    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • What does a question mark and i file mean on my macbook pro

    what does a question mark and i file mean on my macbook pro when i turn it on?

    To be more specific, the computer is not finding a valid system when it starts up. This may result from the hard drive's physical mechanism failing, or the system on the drive being corrupted in some way.
    Repairing permissions is not likely to fix this issue. Instead I would suggest booting from the system install DVD, running Disk Utility, selecting your hard drive's partition and select *Repair Disk*.
    Note: if the hard drive does not show up in Disk Utility at all, it is dead and will need to be replaced. Contact Apple (800-275-2273 in the USA) and have them set up warranty service, or carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store to have it fixed. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first you you may wait a long time to speak to a Mac Genius.
    If Repair Disk finds any problems and is able to correct them, you may be able to restart and everything be okay. If it is unable to correct the problems, you will need to erase and restore your hard drive.
    If Repair Disk does not find any problems, I would suggest an Archive and Install as described in [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710].
    Best of luck.

  • What does a spinning question mark mean?

    When I turned my iPad on this morning, I get only a spinning question mark  (small question mark in a blue circle) when i try to go on the internet.  IPad comes on fine....but I can't get on the internet.  Mail is working though.  I reset it, nothing happened.  It is fully charged.  I checked the wifi; it is on.  My iMac is working....no problems getting on internet there.  iPad was working when I went to sleep....I was listening to iTunes.  But this morning, only the question mark when trying to get online.  I am running Lion and iOS5.  This is an iPad 2, one year old.
    Thanks for your help.

    First Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
    If that doesn't help try a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    These two steps are often very helpful in resolving various issues.
