What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?

Hello All,
In an interview (http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Interviews/bloch_effective_08_qa.html) that I did with Joshua Bloch on java.sun.com, promoting the revised version of “Effective Java”, he discusses generics, enums, annotations, the under-use of Java libraries, the importance of minimizing the accessibility of classes and members and minimizing mutability, and other matters.
To my question: “What’s the strangest thing about the Java platform?” his answer was: “I'm going to say that the strangest thing about the Java platform is that the byte type is signed. I've never heard an explanation for this. It's quite counterintuitive and causes all sorts of errors.”

I liked how he said "What Not to Do" and then brought up java.util.Calendar. I always thought the idea of starting the months' numbering from zero instead of one was one of the most bizarre language design decisions ever made. But it made me think of the TV show "What Not to Wear". We definitely need Clinton and Stacy to show up in Calendar's apartment and send it out for a refit. (Although apparently that's actually happening in Java 7.)Isn't that a carry over from [C's struct tm|http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/clibrary/ctime/tm.html], where tm_mon (0-11) was the number of months since January?

Do you know what is the best thing about the retina display? the answer is they've solved the issue of the dead and stuck pixels thing you know how because the pixels are very very small so u can't see if it's working or not some day you will walking around holding your new ipad and you don't even know the plenty pixels that are dead and you can't notice them HAHAHA that was a good one LOVE YA APPLE.

I doubt that's the reason Apple spent the money on retina displays, but a good observation.

What are the bad things about Apple Remote Desktop? Need it for my assignment

Is your assignment about managing a classroom full of Macs?
Otherwise, Screen Sharing, or a VNC client/server, or TeameViewer.com, or LogMeIn.com might be better, and less expensive.
ARD is intended for managing a classroom or office full of Macs. It is overkill for remotely accessing a remote Mac or two.

  • Minidv - the strangest thing I've ever seen

I started a thread last week asking if minidv was dead. I asked this because it appeared that my Panasonic minidv camera was broken and I wondered if I should make the move to a different format. Bottom line: There was no need to leave minidv at this point in time . . .just get another minidv camera and I'd be fine for the foreseeable future.
As a continuation of that discussion, I have encountered the strangest thing I've ever seen and I'm wondering if anybody can provide insight. I'll try to make a complicated story as concise as possible.
The reason I thought my Panasonic camera was in need of repairs was because large blue streak suddenly appeared across the screen when I played back or recorded video. This was not a problem with the tape, because I checked a few different tapes. In addition, these blue streaks showed up on previously recorded footage that looked perfectly fine when I dumped it to FCP a while ago.
So I bought a used Canon on eBay as a replacement. When I inserted a couple of tapes into the Canon, I saw gray streaks in the same manner I had seen blue streaks on the Panasonic. As far as I could tell, this meant one of two things: 1) there WAS a problem with the footage on the tapes, or, 2) both cameras were malfunctioning in a similar matter.
After an hour of going back and forth trying to isolate the problem, I decided to record some new footage on the Canon. When I did this, there were no gray streaks on playback of the new footage. Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the previous footage that appeared to have gray streaks, and now the gray streaks were gone.
Wondering if some kind of miracle had happened, I took the tape out of the Canon and inserted it into the Panasonic. Still the same blue streaks on the Panasonic. Since recording a few seconds of new footage on the Canon seemed to be a miracle cure, I decided to try the same thing on the Panasonic. Voila! Blue streaks are gone. I tested other tapes . . .all blue streaks gone from the Panasonic and all gray streaks gone from the Canon.
If recording new footage on the Panasonic somehow magically realigned the heads or something, that should have fixed it last week when this problem first arose on my Panasonic. I tried all these same tests on the Panasonic and the blue streaks wouldn't go away on both newly recorded footage and previously recorded footage.
How is it possible that both of these cameras were working incorrectly in the same manner with several different tapes and then, simply by recording several seconds of new footage, they were miraculously healed? This is bizarre!!!
The only thing I did differently in all this troubleshooting was eat a banana. After that, things were fine. I say that half jokingly, but that is literally what I did. I took a break and at a banana, then 5 minutes later I tried exactly the same things and the cameras worked.
I guess I should be happy that both cameras are working now, but since I have no clue what the common denominator was that caused them to malfunction, and I have no clue how they both healed themselves, I'm worried about using them when I'm trying to record important footage.
Any serious thoughts about how this miracle has happened? (Yes, I know that user error is usually the next thing to consider, but I took very methodical steps to isolate the problem, so I really think the odds of that being the cause are very slim.)

Sounds like dirty heads to me....
I had a similar problem a few years ago. Weird streaks started showing up in my footage, so I used my friend's camera to figure out if it was a problem with the tape or my camera. I ended up transferring dirt from my camera to my friend's with the tape I was using. The footage was ruined, but I ran a head cleaning tape through both cameras and never had the problem since, although I haven't used MiniDV in a few years now.
Sounds like you did the same thing as me....meaning you're right twice: 1) the tapes had dirt on them, and 2) both cameras were having the same problem because the tape was dirty
it seems weird that recording new footage fixed the problem, but its possible that it cleaned the dirt of the heads (temporarily). I'd say buy a couple head cleaning tapes and you'll be fine....and maybe try eating more bananas

  • I'm reading way to many bad things about the new Lion... is it worth it??

I'm reading way to many bad things about the new Lion... is it worth the upgrade and hassle or will this push me back to Google for e-mail, calendars and contacts? I love my Mobile.Me... Why change whats working for an OS thats not working ?

The more you read these forums the more you'd mistakenly think that Lion is generally a problem.
For every person who comes here with a problem there's many thousands who are running Lion hassle-free, including me.
I've used MobileMe since the beginning and have happily moved to iCloud, There's a couple of things you may miss from MobileMe in the short term but those things like iWeb hosting are going away anyway in June.
I suggest you join the millions of Happy Lion Users. Just back up your data in case you absolutely need to do a clean install back to Snow Leopard.

  • The strangest thing: My mac doesnt see ONLY Win7 cd

    Hi guys,
Check this out: I bought parallels 5 and Win 7 home edition, in order to put on my mac. Parallels installation was nice and smooth, i created virtual machine and insterted Win 7CD. (official)
And here came the strangest thing: my mac doesnt see it! I ejected the cd, and put in other cd (in this case Starcraft 2), and voila it works, the install image pops up and i see the cd in finder. I put in this very Win 7 cd in the other mac...and it works, finder sees it and i can access it.
However when I put it back in my macbook pro, it keeps spinning it and seems to think its blank, cause iDVD pops up after 2-3 minutes. Parallels 5 doesnt see it, Finder doesnt see it either. What could be the problem? Any ideas welcome
P.S. just tried this Win7 cd on G5 (OS 10.4.6): no problem, took it to the shop and tried it on the shop's MBP: no problem. Tried inserting other CD's in my MBP (as mentioned above they were Parallels, Starcraft2, and Snow Leopard): absolutely no problem. But when i insert this Win 7 CD in, my MBP doesnt recongize it. My brains are fried as I cannot think of one single possibility of what might cause this strangest issue. (tried another Win7 cd, same thing)
    Mac OS X 10.6.4/ Mac Book Pro 2.66 Intel Core DUo/ 4GB
this Mac was bought in October 2009 from official store

Actually, it's not that strange at all.
Apparently due to the type of media Microsoft burns the disks on, some drives just don't like it. I had to make a copy of a Windows 7 DVD on my Mac Pro because the drive in a PC refused to read it even though it had no scratches or damage and the drive would read every other disk fine. When making the copy of the disk in my Mac I found that the Apple-shipped SuperDrive would read the disk but my aftermarket DVD burner in the second drive bay would not.
So, your options are to image the drive on another computer and burn a copy, or track down a USB DVD drive and install it from that.
Parallels will install from an ISO so if you can image it on your G5 and then just copy it over the network it will work. You can also enable CD drive sharing somehow, but I've never done that before.
EDIT: I wanted to comment that all the drives I have encountered that would not read the disk were TSSTcorp drives.

    -Ryan

The system doesn’t recognize or capitalize the word (I) or the first word of every sentence. Another really annoying thing about the integrated mail on your Mac computers is the fact that the system learns the word as you type it more and more instead of highlighting it as incorrectly is this is a word that’s being misspelled. Can Apple fix this bug to make it user friendly as if you were using Office or a Word Document?

    You hit the target CT.
It’s only fair that if Apple is going to integrate Mail into Mac PCs, it would be nice if the system does it for you like Office or perhaps Outlook. I just don’t to use Outlook although I have it installed and ready to use, but instead use Mail which comes with Mac OS already.
I hope to make some sense here.

  • What is that circle thing in the middle of pictures?

Just upgraded to CS 5.5 from CS3.
In InDesign, when I drop a picture in, what is that circle thing in the middle of the image when I move my mouse over it? If I click it, it switches to a direct selection of the image. That is damn annoying. Can I turn that off?
Also, when I rotate a picture using the Rotate 90° Counter or Rotate 90° Clockwise buttons, it's not rotating from the center. It's rotating on the upper left corner.. if that makes sence. Can I fix that somehow somewhere?

Easiest way to avoid it is click anywhere else in the box except the circle, takes some getting use to annoyed me the first week or so as well. Not sure if it can be disabled.
Also, if it's rotating from a point other than center, make sure the center black box is selected on your attributes bar reference points next to the X Y W H selectors, it determines where you rotate from.
