What's this strange computer on my network?

I have 2 macs on my APX network. The network is password protected and the network is 'closed' (SSID disabled) and the firewall is on at both computers but not the router. Recently a new computer has shown up in my sidebar under "Shared". It only shows up on the MacBook and not the MacPro. I can't connect to this computer. There's been no overt damage to my systems (yet!) but I don't like not knowing what's up.
I do go offsite with my macbook and use another wireless WAN with lots of people on it, and I recently installed GIMP (a freeware image processing program).

yes, as i said, this sometimes happens with devices like a printer or Wii on the network. you can try unplugging them all and see if it goes away.
The shared printer is wired to the macpro and shared over AP. This might account for why the "intruder" is only showing up on my laptop.
I agree the closed network gives peace of mind - but still....

pretty simple question here - itunes say you can autorise 5 computers - but what is this exactly.
Does this mean i can logon the account on my other computer, and redownload the music for that computer (as a 2/5 autorised?) - or does it mean i may transfer music from this computer im on now to my other one?

It means that you can play tracks and videos purchased from the iTunes Music Store on up to five computers. You can only download a given purchase one time, though, so if you want a track or video on another computer, you have to copy it there yourself.

MAC OSX 10.9.5: What is this strange file format in the Open Dialog box?

Hello all.
I'd never really noticed this, but I saw a rather unusual file format in the Open dialog box and was wondering why it appeared as it did. It appears as follows from the file/open dialog box:
To be completely transparent, I'd originally posted this image on my twitter feed to @illustrator. Since then I have been in communication with Scott but the advice has been to reinstall Illustrator. If this had happened on one machine, I'd be inclined to agree that this may do something, but since discovering this unusual format, i've since seen it on six macs running OS 10.9.5 and illustrator version 18.1.0 OR 18.1.1
Can anyone else confirm that they see the same thing; or if there is a difference, what this format is meant to actually be. I suspect this is a bug but need confirmation by other users.

The error occurs on all machines I have tested. 5 of the machines have the suitcase fusion auto-activation plug-in, but one had no plug-ins at all. All software was installed literally "out of the box" from the creative cloud.
UPDATE - tested 3 more machines in the office all running 18.1.1 on OSX 10.9.5 and they ALL do the same thing, all installed with the suitcase fusion auto-activation plug-in, but otherwise installed "out of the box" from creative cloud.

What is this strange window in Terminal at startup?

A window titled "Launchpad alias - edited" keeps appearing at startup. The window is from the program "Terminal" and appears to be written in code or characters unknown to me. Is this evidence of a serious problem? How do I fix or get rid of this?

Swing components should be updated in the GUI Event Dispatch Thread. Maybe use a SwingUtilities.invokeLater(...) to change the scrollbar value.

Ghost computer on my network

Recently, I sometimes see this strange computer under "Shared Computers" on my Mac, it's called something like "mac00124e48628". I can connect to it as guest, but I don't see any content, and I have no idea who it could be.
So:
• Do I have to be afraid my network has been hacked?
• How can I find out how many machines are connected to my network?
• If it's real, how can I kick it out?

I've been looking at other posts and this is really the only one I've found with my problem.
I also have an unknown computer under the "Shared" tab in the finder window.
I turned on WPA2 Personal and entered a password. I changed my network to hidden.
I still have a computer in the "Shared" finder tab. It is listed as Macintosh-2 and not an ip address.
I know my neighbor has a mac but don't know his settings.
The Macintosh-2's icon is an imac but is a little darker in color to MY iMac that is connected to the network.
Is someone connected to my computer, causing this huge amount of paranoia, or is it something else.

Just back from the dentist.
Did a hard reset and when i asked time capsule to do a backup it tells
me
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image is already in use"
I think I misunderstand how this back up device works.
Is it to be plugged into the back of the router with an ethernet cable?
I have the Time capsule sitting beside my Imac.

When I came back to my computer this message was on the screen. Should I be concerned ? or doing something?

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

I have a time capsule, you would think, good for you. Well it's.
but, i've a question: if I go to finder, -tab sharing:
I see my time capsule and this hp2c768a3a471ewith a picture of an old hp computer. I cannot find it in my network list, to delete it. I cannot delete it at all. somehow it's invisible.
if I click sharing connect, It can't.
what is this hp2c768a3a471e should I be worried or is it a part of time capsule. for the pc dudes?
I'm not a computer expert, but hopefully someone can help me out there.

Somewhere at sometime you had a HP computer on the network.. perhaps someone with laptop that was visiting.. as a network device it has shown up in the network. It is not doing anything bad.. it will not harm you.. although if you are totally unaware of it.. I would recommend you change your wireless security on the TC.. make sure it is set to WPA2 Personal with a password of 10-20 characters pure alphanumeric mix of upper, lower cases and numerals.
See who screams.. that is the person you just cut off.
If you happen to have a printer with slot for SD card.. it is possible it is your printer.

Strange computer on my Computer-to-Computer Network

I'm on my computer and I just noticed a strange computer ("LeeMiser's Computer") listed under the Computer-to-Computer Network heading on my connectivity icon for my Airport. I'm using 128 Wep Protection with a password (and just changed it) and checked "create a closed network" option on the Airport Admin Utility (which is supposed to hide my name from neighbors) but this computer is still showing up under Computer-to-Computer Network. Is this person tapping into my wifi. Why can't I get rid of him?

A Computer-to-Computer network or Ad-Hoc network is created by the AIrPort Extreme card built-in your Mac. It does not rely on a separate wireless router ... so the AirPort Utility settings are independent of this type of network.
Instead, a Computer-to-Computer network is controlled via the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar. The only security setting available is WEP. WEP, as you are most likely already aware, is no longer considered a secure standard ... and can easily be "broken."
It is possible that someone has figured out your password. The question that remains is do you really need to have a Computer-to-Computer network or is your real goal to connect your Mac to a wireless router?

I attempted to open Final Cut Express this morning and got the message, "Protection Error - This application cannot continue because another application with an identical serial number is already running on another computer on your network".
I have no other FCE on any computers...this is the only mac running (iMac 2008 model). I used a preference manager app and deleted preferences...didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled FCE...didn't work.
This is the first time I have used FCE since installing the Yosemite OS, so I'm thinking perhaps that has something to do with it.
Any ideas?

There have been recent posts appearing about your problem. I'm not sure if anyone has found a solution.
FCE was abandoned by Apple years ago, and they are currently making Operating Systems without regard to how it impacts FCE.

That is what I would try - a fresh install - but your need to use FCS remover (from the same software source as Preference Manager) to make sure you get all traces of your existing installation off the drive prior to doing the installation:

If you use FCS Remover, and reinstall the other problem may be that Apple has apparently removed the Software Upgrade to FCE 4.0.3.
So unless you have a 4.0.3 install disk, or you hadn't upgraded past the version number of the install disk you do have, you legacy projects may be tagged as being created with a later version than you have and not open.

Hi, Kozou. Welcome to the forums!
Connect your computer to the Express's Ethernet port and open AirPort Utility. Does this allow AirPort Utility to find your Express?
If so, go through the setup process. After the Express restarts, disconnect it from the computer and connect it to your DSL, cable modem, or whatever provides your internet connection. Wait a minute or so. The light on the Express should turn green.
Now tell your MBP to join the wireless network created by the Express. You can do this using the AirPort menu or the Network pane of System Preferences.
Does this work?

When the page is submitted for approval by using SharePoint OOTB Page Approval Workflow, it takes quite long time and prompt error message as below.
"The form cannot be submitted to the Web server either because your computer is offline or because the host server is currently unavailable.
If this problem persists, contact your network administrator."
It only happens in Internet Explorer version 8 and 9. IE version below 8 is not used in environment.
But it is working in Firefox.
Please help me on how to fix this issue.
